Brought peace and stability to China. Imposed new law codes-harsh-public whippings Reorganized the tax system = economic prosperity Reformed local government
Confucianism again became the empire’s official doctrine.
City merchants and artisans grew wealthier=more entertainment and learning.
Chinese exploration From 1405-1433 emperors sent out seven expeditions in order
to “glorify” Chinese arms and show off wealth. As a result of the voyages, Chinese merchants settled in SE
Asia and India, spreading Chinese culture.
Forbidden City
Capital was moved from Nanjing to Beijing. Forbidden City
The emperor and his family lived. Two main sections:
One for the emperor’s personal use The other for state occasions.
Courtyard outside the gate held 90,000 people. As law and order collapsed, invaders from
Manchuria attacked the Northern frontier.
Qing Dynasty
In 1644, the Manchu's set up the Qing Dynasty.
Ruled for almost 300 years, and brought the island of Taiwan into the empire.
The Manchu rulers adopted many of the native Chinese customs and traditions.
Top government jobs were for Manchus.
Manchu leaders ordered Chinese men to shave their heads except a single braid called a queue, or be executed.
Qing contact with Europeans
Europeans were eager to trade with the Chinese. Silk and porcelain were traded for items
from the Americas, such as sweet potatoes, maize, and peanuts as well as gold and silver.
Jesuit missionaries followed the Portuguese traders to convert the Chinese to Christianity.
Qing Decline During the 1700s
corruption and internal rebellions forced the Qing dynasty into a slow decline.
Taiping Rebellion lasted 14 years, leaving much of southern China destroyed and the central government weakened.
S.E. ASIA Ch. 7.4 European influences
European traders in search of new trade routes and products in the early 1500s.
Portuguese Spice trade SE Asia had been controlled by Muslim traders until the Portuguese arrived in
the early 1500s The Portuguese built new trading posts to secure their trade routes. Also tried to spread Catholicism
Spanish in the Philippines
1565, Spanish founded a colony in the Philippines. Fertile land and an excellent location for
trade. The Spaniards expanded their control by
persuading local rulers to pledge loyalty to Spain.
Many converted to Catholicism.
Dutch traders in Indonesia During the 1620s, the Dutch forced the English out of the
islands that make up present day Indonesia. Dutch worked with local kings to stop rebels. Controlled most of the islands by the 1700s and all trading
rights.
French in Vietnam
The French were in India were late to trade and convert in areas of Indochina.
By the 1800s, most of Indochina was made up of predominantly Chinese in culture and controlled by local emperors.
By 1858, the French came back in force to protect Christians who were persecuted, along with wanting Indochina’s rubber, coal, and rice.
By the 1860s, the French began to colonize the region.
