Year 9 Adventure Residential

Following the success of the Year 7 residential, our Year 9s headed off to Grosvenor Hall, the Kingswood Adventure Centre in Kent. The group were exceptionally well behaved and spent the weekend doing a variety of teambuilding and problem solving exercises. In addition to this they had the opportunity to try out the 3G swing, the leap faith and the aerial runway. The highlight of the weekend was the chance to make fire by traditional methods.

In School This Week

The Science Department have captured students across the year groups taking part in experiments during lessons this week. After the half term break students can join the after school Science Club run by Mr Taylor. Year 7 students have been enjoying their first few weeks in Secondary School Science. They have had the opportunity to use optical microscopes to view cells as well as making measurements with various pieces of apparatus. Year 12 Chemistry students underwent their first required practical which involved making a standard solution. This was used to determine the concentration of an unknown solution. The students appreciated the chance to put their theory into practice. Year 13 Chemistry students prepared samples of aspirin from salicylic acid and ethanoic anhydride. The students successfully made aspirin samples before testing their purity by measuring the melting point of the crystals. All the students achieved excellent purity with a sharp melting point of 135 °C.

Open Mornings

Our recent Open Mornings have been a great success, with prospective parents praising the school and the excellent conduct of students, especially the guides and the high quality of lessons they were free to observe. The school held its final open morning this week and altogether the school has hosted 1219 visitors over the three events. The success of these events has meant that, due to high demand, Teddington School will be hosting another morning of tours during Period 1 on Tuesday 17 October. Parents wishing to view the talk given by the Head of School can access this on YouTube https://youtu.be/i6qFVAwYxVo

Sporting Success

On Tuesday 10 October 12 students represented the school in National U14 Schools’ Championship at the University of Westminster ground in Chiswick. The team played exceptionally well and I am extremely excited about the year ahead for the team. The Hockey club runs on a Thursday afterschool from 3.30pm - 4.30pm and all abilities are welcome. Miss Metcalfe ―The team and I had such a great day. It was so much fun and it was great to be part of a team. Our first game was against Goldolphin and Latymer. It was a tough game and we couldn’t quite find our pace. As the third game came around, we played against Latymer who we drew with. We gained momentum and were able to defend effectively. Each game, player of the match was awarded by the team. These include: Isabel Jenner, Lola Parkes, Scarlett Wiloughby, Tilly Harradine, Naoisa Sharma and Carmella Baratta. We would not have been as strong a team without such talented players including Georgia Dobson, Olivia Lewis, Yana Chilcote and Maddie Jenner. I also had ‘captain’s choice’ for overall best player which was awarded to Amelia May due to her consistency in defence, team work and tactical play. We feel that overall the day was successful and we were identified as the most skilful on the day by one of the Middlesex coaches, which we were thrilled about. Thank you to Chrissy Foreman for also helping to coach and referee on the day. I cannot wait to see how the rest of the year plans out.‖ Georgia Slader-Heys, Team Captain

News From the Sixth Form

Head Boy and Head Girl Applications This week applicants for the positions of Head Boy and Head Girl at Teddington School have been shortlisted. The Sixth form team were really pleased with the significant amount of interest from students and the standard of writing in their application letters was outstanding. However, this did mean that we had a difficult choice to make. We are looking forward to the interviews next week where students will be put to the test. As a team we are looking for young aspirational adults who want to be involved in whole school activities and lead by example. We hope to announce our new Head Boy and Head girl appointments before the half term. Good luck to all applicants. Sixth Form Staff

Last week our Year 13 EPQ students presented their research in front of their tutors Ms Bailey, Ms Hale and Mr Hanson. The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is taken by some students in the United Kingdom, where it is equivalent to half an A level. They are part of level three of the National Qualifications Framework Rebecca Hopkins presented her research on ―Do the economic benefits of exploitation oil in the Arctic outweigh the impacts on indigenous ways of life in the Arctic circle?‖ Abi Greenwood had considered ―How do the performing arts impact mental health and how can this be implemented into schools to improve student mental health‖ and Sophie Roadknight had chosen to ―Explore the Impact of Psychological theory on the process of method acting, evaluate the theoretical concepts and their ability to adapt and change the curriculum”. They were all hugely impressive. All of them were very confident in presenting to their audience and each topic was fascinating and insightful. Their essays will now be moderated and sent off to the exam board and their grades will arrive at school next year. Well done girls and thank you the tutors and Mrs Richardson for all their help, support and guidance along the way. Miss Thomas Head of Year 13

On Wednesday 11 October the Year 9 and 10 girls football squad were in Romford, Essex to play Frances Bardsley School. The girls were keen to get started and the school had provided an independent fully qualified referee. The captain, Ella Waldron, soon had the girls warmed up and in position. Kick off at 3.20pm and from two set pieces the team were 2 goals down. With minutes to spare before half time Charlotte Flood scored. Half time chat was positive and recognising that our limited team numbers meant each girl was playing to her maximum. The team spirit was high and our efforts paid off when Molly Lavin scored early in the second half. This gave the girls a boost in their confidence. Our stamina was excellent despite being unable to make substitutions, scored with a superb corner from Holly Morgan picking out Charlotte. Shortly after a corner kick from Ella Waldron fell into a heavily defended goal mouth but Sara Belkadi showed killer instinct and parried a goal taking us to 4. Our team kept applying the pressure showing immense character and were rewarded with a further goal from Charlotte. Five minutes later, the ball came out to midfield where Molly Lavin set the shot up and from a long kick scored our next goal. In the final minutes Teddington was awarded a penalty. Captain Ella Waldron stepped up to take it. With great strength and direction she scored our seventh and final goal. A great and rewarding afternoon, finishing with a long journey home arriving at Teddington at 7.00pm. Thank you to Mrs Baker for your company and touchline tweeting! We now await the draw for the third round. Ms S Phillips Pastoral Manager KS3
