The Lile Scoop The Newsletter of Little School at Grace Church Cathedral Charleston, South Carolina March 2020 FROM THE DIRECTOR FROM THE DIRECTOR In early February, Sarah Stubbs and I attended the South Carolina Early Childhood Association annual conference. We were among 1,600 early childhood professionals who gathered at the North Charleston Convention Center for two days of classes and seminars in a variety of topics from Building Mathematicians to Lessening Challenging Behaviors. We learned new teaching techniques and best practices and had the opportunity to share experiences with a wide range of early childhood educators from across the state. We left the conference invigorated with new ideas and confident that Little School was hitting the mark in educating our students. One of the ideas that came up multiple times at the conference was providing parents with activities you can do with your children at home to reinforce what they are learning at school. On the next page you’ll find a few fun, easy ideas that you can do to build your child’s early literacy and math skills. The internet also offers a ton of great ideas! Enjoy this issue of Little Scoop and all the pictures of your children having fun at school! lisa Please join us for the Fours & Fives presentation of Peter Rabbit Friday, March 20 11 AM Hanahan Hall A reception will follow in the courtyard

Congratulations to our Little School families on the birth of their babies...

Spring Lunch BunchBeginning in March as the weather warms up, Lunch Bunch gets increasingly popular. It’s always a good idea to pre-register through the end of the year to guarantee your child’s space. For the safety of students, we limit attendance to 34 children which means sometimes we have to cut off registration early because we’ve met our quota. Don't be caught off guard...sign up in HeadMaster today!

New Tuition Management ProgramAs we wrap up this school year we’ll be saying “goodbye” to HeadMaster and debuting a new tuition and data management program. Smart Tuition offers all of the benefits of HeadMaster including online bill pay and instant account access in addition to a very intuitive and user-friendly mobile app. Watch for more information in early summer.

2020-2021 EnrollmentAfter completing re-enrollment we have a few openings in the Twos, Threes and Fours classes for the 2020-2021 school year. Word of mouth recommendations from our Little School parents is our best advertising. If you meet someone looking for a preschool please send them our way.

Vacation Bible SchoolThis summer, Grace Church Children’s Ministries will host a week of Vacation Bible School June 15-19. This year’s theme is Knights of the North Castle. Children ages 4 to 9 are invited to participate and older children are encouraged to be youth helpers. Parent volunteers are also needed. For more information or to register visit gracechurchcharleston.org.

Little Science Seekers is 45 minutes of interactive fun. Taught by Kat Albright, the class is designed to get young children excited about and interested in science. Each week students will complete a hands on experiment and learn about a different topic including the five senses, properties of matter, sink or float, walking water and (everyone's favorite).....SLIME!!! Little Science Seekers will be on Tuesdays from 12:15-1:00 pm.

Snowball throw alphabet gameTape letters to a wall, call out the sounds and have your kids throw the snowball (ping-pong ball) at the letter represented. Kids get to work on their coordination as well as their alphabet.

Shoelace ShapesDraw a large shape on a sheet of paper. It can be a geometric shape such as a triangle or oval or an irregular shape like a squiggly circle. Demonstrate for your child how to place the piece of string along the shape's outline. Then, encourage your child to do the same. Talk about curvy and straight lines. Draw a new shape and invite your child to do the activity again. Discuss how the shapes are similar and how they are different. This Supports learning about geometry and exploring shapes. Children learn words used in math and begin to notice the features of different shapes as they outline the shapes with string.
