Theres an old saying, If at first you dont succeed, try, try again.Often, that is wise advice. However, there are situations in which this adage does not work, but only leads to frustration and failure. If the way in which we are trying to accomplish our intention is unworkable, we will never succeed. Consider this - according to our bylaws, we need sixty people to be the officers, board and committee members of our church. In addition, there are many volunteers who make our congregation function. We have more positions of responsibility than people in the sanctuary on a normal Sunday morning! The result is that some of our most committed members are facing burnout by wearing too many hats. There are no simple answers to the concern I have raised, but let me give you one example of what I am suggesting. Our bylaws state that when a new pastor is needed, a search committee of at least nine, but not more than twelve members is to be established. However, only eight members were ready, willing and able to serve on this important committee. A congregational meeting was called in order to amend the bylaws to accept the eight who had volunteered. Unfortunately, not enough members attended that meeting to make a quorum, so the motion could not be approved. We could have just said, We dont have enough volunteers and therefore we cant have a search committee. If we had stayed stuck there, would Old Stone Church have any future? Perhaps not! But we did not stay stuck there. We decided to be pragmatic and move forward with these eight capable volunteers. => Go Team, Go! => In that same spirit, I suggest that we encourage and receive, without judgment, the resignations of any who feel that they are unable to fulfill the responsibilities to which they were elected. Such honesty and grace may, in the end, open the door for Gods renewing power to flow into, among and through us. Grace and peace be with you, David

From the Interim Pastor...

There’s an old saying, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” Often, that is wise advice. We could have just said, “We don’t have enough volunteers and therefore we can’t have a search committee.” If we had stayed stuck there, would Old Stone Church have any future? Perhaps not! But we did not stay stuck there. We decided to be pragmatic and move forward with these eight capable volunteers.

=> Go Team, Go! =>

In that same spirit, I suggest that we encourage and receive, without judgment, the resignations of any who feel that they are unable to fulfill the responsibilities to which they were elected. Such honesty and grace may, in the end, open the door for God’s renewing power to flow into, among and through us. Grace and peace be with you,

David

Sunday School News!

Sunday School has started another year!

So happy to have the children back to learn of God's love, hear Bible stories and start a project

too. We help others. Our first few weeks were dedicated to learning the books of the Bible. We

studied the creation story, Noah and the Ark, had class fun and watched some Bible-based

short movies. Our October schedule continued our journey through the Bible and we also

worked toward raising funds for Heifer International. Check out our story board in the gym

after church. Each student has a collection box that they will try to fill and return by the end

of the month. Please give generously if you see them during coffee hour. This is a familiar

project for our Sunday school and is based on the phrase , "Give a man a fish and he will eat

for a day but teach him to fish and he will never hunger". This was our story for Chapel on

October 7. November will be focused on thankfulness — for all we are and all we can be.

Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts at Old Stone Church will again participate in

Scouting for Food, a collection in central East Haven, on Saturday,

November 10. If you receive a "yellow" bag donated by Shop Rite with the

Scouting for Food logo, you can donate non-perishable food to the East Haven Food Pantry in this

manner. A scout will pick up the bag by 3:00pm. Thank you for your generosity. The Food Pantry

will be distributing over 250 bags of food to East Haven residents.

We can always use funds for postage and copy paper, card stock, labels, etc. for the office. Monetary donations are always welcome for incidental items. Thank you to Louise Ward’s Childbirth class for several reams of copy paper.

The Early Learning Center is also in need of ongoing supplies—easily picked up at your local dollar store the next time you visit. Plastic spoons, 6” and 9” paper plates, tissues, disinfecting wipes and masking tape, to name a few. A donation box is available during coffee hour or you can drop off your donations during the week. Thanks to all who have donated and continue to donate. Your contributions are very much appreciated. Mark Your Calendar

Board of Global Outreach Thank you to everyone who has contributed the suggested items of Jell-O, pudding and muffin mixes for the East Haven Food Pantry Thanksgiving bags. As always, the Food Pantry is grateful to receive any food donations or monetary gifts. Grocery gift cards for Shop Rite and

Stop and Shop were donated by the Board and will be used for food for larger families. If you would like to make a note, we will be collecting soups for the Food Pantry in December. Now that the cold weather is approaching, the Board of Global Outreach will again collect items for Blessing Bags. This is an idea that has become popular and is a very much needed blessing for many in need. Suggestions are: small toiletries: shampoo, soap, deodorant, handi-wipes, sanitizers, hand warmers, socks, gloves, hats, granola bars, tuna pouches, and small bags of candy. The local “Dollar” stores can provide many items. Anything on the list below is great, and please, if you have other things you would like to put into the Blessing Bags, you can bring those too. There will be a box in the Narthex that you can put your items in. Once we get enough items, we will put the bags together, and then the Congregation can take them, and when they see someone in need, they can give a Blessing Bag to them. All the bags that were distributed this past summer were gratefully appreciated, some with tears, and “Bless you” comments. Thank you for your generosity.

Old Stone Church Early Learning Center

Our “Back to School Night for Parents” was quite successful. The parents reviewed the Connecticut Early Learning and Development Standards which guide our school’s curriculum. The parents visited in the classrooms and were delighted with the many projects the teachers and children had on display. Each of the families received a copy of the book entitled “Meet the Parents” that they could enjoy at home with each other. October was Fire Prevention Month so our local fire department visited the school to emphasize fire safety. After showing a video, the students met and spoke to Sparky, the fire safety robotic dog. The firefighters let the children climb into the fire truck and also showed them what a fully dressed firefighter in turn-out gear looks like. Thanks to the East Haven Fire Department and their firefighters for an informative and educational program. Fall provided a multitude of projects for the students; leaf banners, Christopher Columbus art, Life Cycle of the Pumpkin, and just fun Halloween projects. The Hagaman children’s librarian, Ms. Sascha, visited this month with stories and a seasonal program. Each month she comes to the school with a variety of literature and musical fun. Class pictures were taken as well as individual portraits for parents to purchase. Smiles all around!! The traditional “Halloween Parade” was again a success with our Main Street merchants generously contributing their support. Children and parents enjoyed the walk and especially all the “goodies”. We thank the parents and congregation for their donations of tissues, disinfectant wipes, masking tape, and various other supplies that help us on an everyday basis. Thank you for your support!
