President’s Report June Newsletter
First of all, thank you all for your support in my election as President at the March 2013 Annual General Meeting. Our (your) Executive Commit-tee is a dedicated group of vol-unteers who strive to ensure that your rights and needs are identified and acted upon in a timely manner. I need to ask all of you to help in identifying individuals who
can join our Executive Committee and continue our goals of serving you, our members. We encourage anyone wishing to join us to come forward as a “Director-at-large” and see how you might fit with the various positions on the Execu-tive, and also note that the Registrar position will also need to be filled next March. Simply put: We need your help! Please join us so that we can continue as a vibrant branch of FSNA. As I mentioned in my opening statement, we held our Annual General Meeting on the 28th of March to elect Officers to your Executive Committee. On the 13th of May we had our annual Volunteer’s Luncheon and a total of 70 attendees were at the luncheon. Then, on the 15th of May, Treasurer Ken Jones, Health and Benefits Officer Penny Kanigan, and I attended the Tri-Regional Meeting in Chilliwack
for training sessions and updates from the Ottawa National Office. Vic Ashdown, our Data Base Manager, Membership Director (acting), and WMS Co-coordinator, also travelled with us to Chilliwack as he conducted WMS (Web-based Membership System) training to FSNA represen-tatives from across British Columbia. We did come away with some new ideas and methodologies of engaging our members in the operation of our Branch. More information will follow at a later date. I will be attending the Annual General Meeting (AGM) to be held in Ottawa June 18 to 20, and will report on the proceedings at our General Meeting on June 27th at the Bayside in Parksville. So to recap, remember that we are a volunteer or-ganization, and when we lose a volunteer, it helps all of us when someone steps forward to fill that void. Have a safe, healthy summer, and I look forward to seeing all of you at our General Meeting in June, and again in September. Respectfully submitted: Robert (Bob) Willis President BC05 Nanaimo and Area Branch
Pres. Bob Willis

One hundred and twenty seven (127) people at-tended the Annual General Meeting held at the Coast Bastion Hotel in Nanaimo.
Meeting was called to order by Bob Willis, Interim President and Chair. All new members were acknowledged. Bob introduced himself, Ce-cile Turnbull, our Regional Services Officer and Bill Turnbull, President of the North Island FSNA.
Minutes of the AGM held March 22, 2012 were circulated. With no errors or omissions noted, a motion to adopt was made by Michelle Ash-down, seconded by Helen Williams. Carried.
The President acknowledged the death of Doris Grieves, our Membership Secretary stating that she will be missed. Bob will be attending the Na-tional meeting in Ottawa in June where the main discussions will be on Bill C-4 – the Not-for-Profit Act.
Treasurer Ken Jones circulated the financial statements prior to the start of the meeting. Ken then provided an explanation. It is anticipated that we will exceed the 2013 budget by approxi-mately $1500.00 due to the extra meetings and training required as a result of Bill C-4. An audit of the financial books has taken place and for-warded to the National Office – anyone wishing to view the books are welcome, Ken has them available. Rene Marchand moved for accep-
tance of the financial report as circulated, sec-onded by Harold Goodman. Carried.
Vic Ashdown circulated the membership re-port prior to the meeting. The recruitment cam-paign, held every two (2) years has commenced which accounts for the high number of new mem-bers. Members on DDS (Direct Deduction) will not receive a recruitment package. Those mem-bers that paid by cheque/cash will receive a pack-age. Vic encourages those members not on DDS to sign up – it makes his life easier. The names of the nineteen (19) deceased members were read and a minute of silence observed. Vic has been the Membership Director for 10 year’s, he is now taking on a new role as the Database Director. Lost members, George and Beth Summers have been found – thank you Harold Goodman. Vic concluded his report with a much appreciated joke.
Charles Scrivener, the Awards-Speakers-Historian Director, indicated that three (3) mem-bers will receive their 5 Year Volunteer Awards in 2013, two (2) of which were in attendance at this AGM. Any ideas or suggestions for speakers are always welcome. The motion to accept this report was made by Charles Scrivener, seconded by Harold Goodman. Carried
Election of Officers
Cecile Turnbull, our Regional Ser-vices Officer for Coastal Islands, in-stalled four volunteer officers of the FSNA Nanaimo Branch at our An-nual General Meeting, February 27, 2013. From left to right:

Al Tully, Program Director was absent. Presi-dent Bob gave a short report saying that the Vol-unteer Luncheon will be held on the 13th of May, 2013, at the Bayside Hotel, Parksville, 11:00 - 1:30 PM.
The next General Meeting will be held on the 27th of June 2013 at the Bayside Hotel in Parks-ville.
Ian Williams, newsletter-web officer said that any items/suggestions, including “suitable” hu-mour, is most welcome.
Harold Goodman reported that he has had no requests for hospital visits but Harold does have a number of name tags to hand out.
Barry Bonfield, Telephone Director was Ab-sent. President Bob reported that the Phoner’s training session held in February was a success, the only downside was that only about one-half of the phoner’s attended. There were volunteer sign-up sheets on each table – we can always use phoners.
Unfinished Business
Conference – Ottawa – A report on this confer-ence will be included in the General Meeting held in June at the Bayside, Parksville, BC
New Business
Telephone Scam
This is a call back scam – calls are originating in the Dominican Republic. Someone calls you and
then says they have an emergency, would you please call them back. When you call back they try and keep you on the line for as long as they can. Telus then bills you what they paid the caller - $2425.00/minute. Advice: Hang up. Two other scams are Microsoft and Ben Ladin’s gold.
Medoc
The phone numbers on the back of the Medoc membership card are for travel 40 days or more. For travel less than 30 days – call Medoc and ver-ify the 1-800 number.
Advice: call Medoc before you travel
Election of Officers – Vic Ashdown
We need volunteers to fill the following va-cant positions - Secretary, Membership Sec-retary, Vice-President, Membership Direc-tor, Assistant Health & Benefits.
Thanks to all our volunteers. Become a Director at Large and see how your Executive works or simply attend a Board Meeting. We welcome all members. Bob Willis thanked all the Executive members for their work and assistance over the past nine (9) months while he was the Interim President.
The Oath of Office was administered by Cecile Turnbull, RSO, after which she spoke to the mem-bership on volunteering and the continued need for members to participate.
Meeting adjourned at: 11:55 by Rene Mar-chard, Past President.
Volunteer Luncheon
President Bob Willis welcomed the volunteers and Ken Jones recorded the attendance at the Bayside, Parksville, May 13, 2013

Presentation - Project Lifesaver
Project Lifesaver is a programme to track and res-cue seniors and others with cognitive issues who tend to wander away from their homes. The client is fit-ted with a wristwatch sized transmitter set up with its own unique fre-quency. If the person wanders away, their caregiver can notify the RCMP, who in turn call Arrowsmith SAR. They then respond using a
special tracking receiver, which picks up the sig-nal that is constantly transmitted from the per-son's wristband.
Families and caregivers can contact D'Arcy Falkiner at 250-594-5488 for information on signing up their loved ones.
Carolyn Fyfe, Alvin Solmie both 5 yr volunteers are bracketed
by President Bob and Charles Scrivener at the AGM.
Ruth Buchanan received her 5 yr.
award from Pres. Bob at the volun-
teer’s lunch.

Demonstration of the
Tracking Receiver
Three ladies were discussing the travails of
getting older. One said, "Sometimes I catch my-
self with a jar of mayonnaise in my hand, while
standing in front of the refrigerator, and I can't
remember whether I need to put it away, or
start making a sandwich."
The second lady chimed in with, "Yes, some-
times I find myself on the landing of the stairs
and can't remember whether I was on my way
up or on my way down."
The third one responded, " Well, ladies, I'm
glad I don't have that problem. Knock on
wood," as she rapped her knuckles on the table,
and then said,
"That must be the door, I'll get it!"

This Newsletter is Available on Our Website!
This Newsletter (and those for the past nine years) is available on our website at the link: http://www.fsna-nanaimo.org/html/newsletter.html
Over half our members have been viewing the Newsletter on the website rather than receiving it by post. If you have Internet access but are currently receiving your Newsletter by ‘snail mail’, you are urged to consider reading it electronically. The advantage to you is that the Newsletter will be available to you in full colour about a week earlier and you will be able to access it quickly at any time (or download it to your computer if you wish). The advantage to the Branch is that we save about $6.00 annually per household in printing and mailing costs. If you wish to view the Newsletter this way, please email Vic Ashdown, the keeper of the membership database, at [email protected] and tell him you wish to go on “ENEWS”. He will amend the database to cancel your mailed copy and Ian Wil-liams, our Newsletter Editor, will send you an email notification each time a new issue is available on the website. Save paper and stamps by going “ENEWS”
