SENSE DAY

Be SILENTand GIVE VOICES

to thehomeless !!!

Sense Day isa brilliant way

to raiseawareness ofHomelessness.

TIPS & TRICKS:Set a realistic butchallenging period of silencefor extra FUNPupils are allowed tocommunicate by white boardsor post-it notes! You cansuggest a donation of £1for it! To make it even moreexciting, only allow thechildren to communicateusing pictures! It helps themto understandhow difficultto be heard without a voice.Set a fundraising target andget the whole schoolinvolved!

Because Senseless is the way the worldSEES homelessness and homeless people...

A BOX LIFE

A Sponsored Box Day!!!

IDEAS:

Simple&Fun: Who can sit on abox the longest?Creative&Competitive: Who canbuild the best thing out of abox? (A house, a boat, or a car?)Adventurous: A Scout Hunt! Askpupils to bring their own boxesto sleep in. They wouldunderstand how hard it is to livein a box everyday!

Because we are ALL the same

And we all can become homeless....

ON THE DAY:Explain to your students howhomeless people sleep.Sometimes they have to walkat night to keep warm...orcramp themselves in a box!Their homes can get wet easily, and they are not very warm.

This activity can help studentsbetter understand the impactof not having a bed to sleep atnight; and cherish what theyoften take for granted.

DON'T FORGET TO PREPARE SOMETREATS FOR THE WINNDER

What can youdo with your boxes?

Boxes mean Easy, Fun & Creative

3

DANCE FOR A HOME

WHAT IS DANCE FOR A HOME?A dance marathon to help raise funds

and awareness of homelessness

HOW DOES IT WORK?The Dance-a-thon can be student-led orteacher-led! You can set the length ofthe thon (e.g. 30 minutes, 1 hour, or

even more!), and of course NO SITTING!

Dance is a fun way to engage and connect people. In the winter, homeless peoplehave to walk or move non-stop to keep

warm, especially in the night. So this is agreat way for your pupils to have fun,

better understand the hardship ofhomelessness, and raise some money to

help!

DANCE TO FIGHTHOMELESSNESS

HOW CAN I RAISE FUNDS?You can charge people to join the dancingextravaganza by asking them to pay to

enter the event or ask participants to raisefunds before the events using the

fundraising websites or sponsorship forms!

WHAT WILL I NEED?A place for your pupils to dance (e.g.,auditorium or gymnastics room)A good DJ and dance instructorsMorale captains to keep everyoneenthusiastic! Fun costume can help too! Some posters to spread the world! You can sell water and snacks on theday too. Proceedings will go to thecharity!

4

WALK THE COLD AWAY

Walking is the most fun andeasiest way to FUNdraising!

You choose the route. You makethe rules. You organise a big walk and geteveryone involved.Every mile you walk and everypound you raise will help peopleto change their lives.

HOW?

SOME IDEAS

Encourage as many people aspossible. Ask kids to bringsiblings, neighbours, friends, etc.Set up small stalls for smallcash selling drinks, lollipops, popcorn, candy floss, etc.

5

HUNT FUN

One right answer meansone clue (e.g. the map or pieces of the map) to the locationof the treasure.

CLUES1. Name 3 reasons why people can be homeless?2. Where do you sleep when you are homeless?3. What do you do if it rains and you are homeless?4. Where can you eat if you are homeless?5. Write a poem about homeless people!! 6. What you have but a homeless person does not have?7. What do you think a homeless person has to carry with them?8. How can a homeless person keep clean?9. Ask your children what they do after school. Some might say that they get picked up by parents,go home, change clothes, play games, open the fridge to have food, have dinner, brush their teeth, close the curtain of the window, lie down on bed...Homeless people have NONE of these privileges. They have no door to open, no spare and clean clothes to change, no food, no bedroom...That iswhat CAP provides them: a sense of belonging, a chance to be ''normal'' again.

Tom's Story

One day when I went back home from school, my parents were just gone. They disappeared. I was 12.I lived with my auntie, then with friends and on off ever since. I camehere 4 years ago. They helped me to get an accommodation, they helpedme to stop drinking, and they offered me a volunteering job.

The hardest thing when I was homeless was to find somewhere safe tosleep, to feel secured. In the winter it was very cold...I tried to break intoempty houses to sleep, otherwise I would have to be on the street ordoorway.

Being asked what his 3 wishes are, Tom said he wants to see his kids, tobecome a Michelin-starred chef, and to have his own house.

Tom nearly finishes his NVQ and is working in the Cathedral ArcherProject kitchen. Tom just got a part-time job and he is more than eager toget a full-time job in the future when he passes his NVQ.

''Chef is like my mama.He taught me everything.I will always come backto the project, they helpme to be where I amtoday. I want to have myown restaurant in thenext 10 years".

15

Catherine's Story

I've got a better opportunity now than what I ever had before...It’s the first timeI've ever had this amount of help, ...finding someone you can trust, when you’reready to do that work, cos you can’t just pick somebody out and say, we’ll do thatthen, you’ve got to want to do it, you’ve got to want to come off the drugs, andyou've got to want to do that yourself. No amount of funding or anything else willget you off of that, you've got to do that.But...having Sam working with me, cos she knows me. She knows my pitfalls.

Because tacklinghomelessness isnot as easy asputting a roof onsomeone's head.

We take people off the street and give them alternative things to dowith their time, and also alternative future...see if we can changepeople's lives and expectations and aspirations.--Tim Renshaw, CEO of Cathedral Archer Project

I now have a reason to wake up in the morning.

16

What Can You Do Now?

We don’t need to give every homeless person we see a £20note, or become BFFs with them; but there’s no reason forfear.Support organisations like the Cathedral Archer Project sowe can continue our support services to help homelesspeople control and change their lives.Look at them in the eye and recognize them as a person canbe very affirming.Do what you can to raise people's awareness abouthomelessness.
