Back To School Survey

Teacher Suggestions

I like to give this to my students on the first day of classes—it’s the

last thing they expect me to give to them. I teach in a high-school

and so the kids cycle through all 8 of their classes in the first two

days. Their heads must explode with all the information that gets

given to them in those first few days. I like to wait until at least the

second or third class until I go over class expectations and the

course curriculum. (I often have several students transfer in / out in

the first week so this saves me some paperwork.)

Ask students to share some of their answers with someone they

don’t know… I usually ask them to share 4 answers and then find a

new partner and share another 4 answers until they’ve shared most

of them. (You can do this four times because there are 18 questions.)

Do a survey of some of the answers and see if there are any

patterns or trends. Common ice cream flavors, dream cars etc.

Ask students to pick one of their answers and turn it into a

paragraph—they must explain their answer in a well-written

paragraph.

Ask students to make a collage of their answers using words,

pictures from the internet, magazine pictures or original artwork.

Play a snippet of each of the songs that each of the students got

stuck in their heads… (tee hee…. this could be funny!)
