It is hard to believe that we are nearly at the end of the first term. It has been a busy Fall with students engaged in a variety of in class and extra-curricular activities such as visiting the Kortright Outdoor Education Centre, running at Regional Cross Country and visiting Cold Creek Conservation Area to name but a few. We would like to thank the teachers and parent volunteers who have made all these events possible. As a school we are working hard on our goal of having our students become more effective problem solvers. Our Professional Learning Teams have been focusing on how to develop success criteria with their classes, how to provide descriptive feedback to each student, and on creating end of unit rubrics to help guide students to improve their knowledge and skills. The fo- cused work students have been doing using the strategies taught has resulted in many students showing an improvement in their read- ing, writing and mathematics. Progress Report Cards will be going home on Wednesday, November 12th. So, please keep an eye out for this important communi- cation about the progress of your child’s learning so far this year. Also, we will be moving to online booking for parent/teacher inter- views. You will be receiving information shortly about how to book interview appointments with your child’s teacher. Interv iews will take place on the evening of Thursday, November 13th and the morning of Friday, November 14th. It is very important that you speak with your child’s teacher to discuss with them how your son/daughter is progressing, and to set goals for the remainder of the school year. If you are unable to meet during the regular interview times, please arrange to meet at another time, or speak to your child’s teacher by phone. A. Medina M. GLEN SHIELDS CELEBRATES DIWALI!

The Glen Shields community celebrated Diwali, the South Asian festival of lights, on Wednesday, October 22. Stu-

dents and staff got together and created an atmosphere of joy and celebrations by dressing in bright colours. The entrance to the school was decorated with cultural artifacts and decorations like diyas (mini lights) and rangoli

(coloured sand art). The library had an informational display. During lunch time, the gymnasium had fun activities like dancing, henna art and face painting. All together it was an exciting and fun day of celebrating diversity.

Cross Country Highlights

Our students had an opportunity to personally challenge them-selves, while having fun, during our school wide cross coun-try event! Many students went on to represent Glen Shields

as area finalists. We are very proud of our students’ efforts!

Our grade 8 boys team qualified for the cross country regional event along with 5 other students. They were excellent repre-

sentatives of Glen Shields. Great job!

Congratulations to all those that participated!

I wonder … In September, Mr. Kliman’s grade 2 class established routines that promote students to wonder about ques-tions, research and share their new learning to build a deep understanding of new concepts. To support a September inquiry, the class raised monarch butter-flies. The class watched the life cycle changes as the caterpillars turned to a chrysalis and then finally to a butterfly. Students had the opportunity to read non-fiction books about monarch butter-flies and recorded their thoughts and observations in pictures and words. The butterflies are now on their incredible journey to Mexico.

Scholastic Book Fair Is Coming!

The Glen Shields book fair runs from Nov. 10 to Nov. 14 this year. This is a great opportunity for all students and their parents to purchase fantas-tic books and therefore support our school li-brary. We invite all of you to drop by the library during those dates and buy as many books as you can.

ECO CORNER We are excited that Eco Team is up and running this year. We are working toward maintaining our Gold status. Students are encouraged to bring litter less lunches during the course of the year. Students are also encouraged to use a lunch bag that is big enough to pack different sizes of reusable lunch containers and an ice pack. Please try to limit the amount of plastic and dis-posables sent to school for lunches. Check the newsletter each month for more eco friendly tips!

Our newsletter will be distributed on-line only

now to be eco-friendly! Hard copies are avail-

able in the school office if required. Thanks for

supporting our school’s eco-friendly initiative!
