8/3/2019 Game Day: Northern Colorado
1/6
The Hammer and the Anvil.
Captain Kirk and Texas Ranger.
The Bruise Brothers.
The blogosphere and Bobcat faithful havebeen searching for an appropri-
ate nickname for the burlyMontana State running
back duo of Cody Kirkand Tray Robinson forquite some time. Thesuggestions are abun-dant, just like the yards
the two bruising tailbacksare racking up this season. And the nicknames, likethe yards, all sum up thepunishment the MSU tail-backs dole out.
Through seven games,Kirk and Robinson havecombined to rush for1,053 yards on 194 carries(5.4 yards per carry) and
10 touchdowns, each total the
most of any pair of running backsin the Big Sky Conference. Not onlyhave Kirk and Robinson piled up the yardsthis season, theyve also done an exemplaryjob holding onto the football and helpingMSU close out games.
Take last week for example. After build-ing a 28-10 halftime lead against Northern
Arizona, the Bobcats went to the ground.Kirk, a sophomore, and Robinson, a junior,
bulldozed their way to a combined 192second-half rushing yards. MSU pos-sessed the ball for more than 22 second-half minutes in defeating the Lumber-jacks 41-24.
They run hard, they run in a power-ful way and because of that, when we get
to the fourth quarter, having two power-ful backs has allowed us to wear peopledown, said MSU head coach Rob Ash,
whose team is second in the Big Sky with213 rushing yards per game.
The main focus, the focal point of gettingthose guys going is wearing out the defense,
added second-year running backs coach KerryDixon. We knew we could thunder and thunder,
as we call it with those guys. We are MontanaState, we are gritty and we are going to hit you in the
mouth all game long. Thats the philosophy we havewith those two guys.

THE EDGEMontana stateatnorthern coloraDo Rushing: The punishing runningback combo o Cody Kirk and TrayRobinson seems to get better by the
eek. Never mind that the Montanatate oensive line was short-handedhe last two weeks. Junior Steven
Memory transitioned seamlessly intohe lineup in place o senior Leo Davis, pening gaping hole ater gaping hole as
MSU rolled up a season-high 297 rushing yardsgainst Northern Arizona. The Lumberjacks entered last weeks gameith the Big Sky Conerences top rushingeense. They let Bozeman the victim o 192econd-hal rushing yards, including 96 yardsnd a touchdown each by Kirk and Robinsonter the intermission. This week, look or
Montana State to jolt out to an early leadgain, then play keep away. Last week againsthe Jacks, MSU held the ball or 22 o 30econd-hal minutes. Against a Bears deensehat gives up 160 yards per game on theround, the rushing and time o possession
otals could slant even heavier in MSUs avoroday.
I MSU does have a big lead ater haltime, look or senior C.J. Palmer and true reshmanhawn Johnson to get their rst signicantarries since MSU played Minot State in Week.Today, the Bobcats will approach and most
likely surpass 300 yards rushing as ateam.
Passing: Sophomore quarterbackDeNarius McGhee has oundhis stride. Over the past threegames wins over SacramentoState, Portland State and NAU McGhee has completed 70 percent
o his passes or 746 yards, ninetouchdowns and just one interception.
Eight o McGhees nine touchdown passesin the last three weeks have come beorehaltime. MSU is eectively employing itsdesired strategy in its 4-0 Big Sky Conerencestart: jump ahead early, then munch up thesecond-hal clock.
MSUs run game is so potent, opponentsmust respect it. As the season progresses, teams will continue to put heightenimportance on slowing down Kirk andRobinson. This in turn sets up opportunitiesor the best play-action passer in the FootballChampionship Subdivision to work his magic.
McGhees play-action akes are second tonone. Against deenses concentrated on
slowing the run, the sophomores illusionistability with the ootball is tremendous. AgainstPSU alone, McGhee made ve magnicentakes resulting in ve long pass plays. Look ormore o the same today.
EDGE: Montana State
WHEN MONTANA STATE HAS THE BALL
EDGE
Rushing: Last weeks matchupagainst Northern Arizona billedthe top-ranked deense in the BigSky (MSU) versus the leagues topoense (NAU). Montana State tookthe challenge and ran with it, bury-
ing the Lumberjacks or 152 yardsless than their season average ortotal yards.
Today, MSUs deense remains the bestin the Big Sky. The Cats lead the league inscoring deense, rushing deense, passingdeense and total deense.
MSUs deensive prowess is in stark con-trast to a Northern Colorado oense that hasstruggled all season. UNC is last in the leaguein scoring (18.6 ppg) and total oense (260.3ypg).
Much o MSUs success this year has comebecause o the Bobcats ability to stop therun and render oenses one-dimensional.UNC has the second-worst rushing attack in
the league (just 63 ypg), meaning long-yard-age situations will be prevalent today.
Much o UNCs ground game ineptitudehas come as a result o playing rom behindall season. But one o UNCs main oensiveweaknesses is its oensive line. No running
game will mean open season or anMSU deensive unit that leads theleague with 23 sacks.
Passing: The Bears have shownfashes in the passing game. Lastweek against Eastern Washington,
UNC redshirt reshman quarterbackSeth Lobato threw or 408 yards. Hehasnt seen a pass rush like Montana
States, however.UNC has given up 20 sacks this season,
second only to Idaho State in the Big Sky.Thats bad news or the Bears, as MSU hasthrived in the pass rush all season, fusteringthe likes o EWUs Bo Levi Mitchel, Sac StatesJe Fleming and NAUs Cary Grossart. Allthree aorementioned quarterbacks are moreexperienced than Lobato.
Today, look or MSU to absolutely smotherany attempt to run by UNC. That in turn willset up long-yardage situations. Since thescore will presumably be lopsided early, UNC
will go to the air early and oten. Look orBrad Daly, Caleb Schreibeis, Zach Minter andthe MSU deensive line to have a big day inthe Bears backeld and look or Lobato to bestaring skyward oten.
EDGE: Montana State
WHEN NORTHERN COLORADO HAS THE BALL
OVERALLThis one should be over early. Look or
Montana State to establish the run withgreat success right out o the gate. Thatwill lead to play-action passes and pointsand the board. Once MSU is up by acomortable margin, look or the Cats toeat the clock. Montana State could scoreas many points as theyd like in this one,but MSU head coach Rob Ash will call othe dogs early and get some PT or someo his non-starters. No trap game here,
just MSUs seventh straight victory asNovember quickly approaches.
For our weeks straight, MSU hashad plenty o motivation. All ourconerence games played by theBobcats eatured opponents withhigh-powered oenses to inspirethe MSU deense.Today, exterior motivation is
nonexistent, but dont expect
a letdown rom MSU. These Catswant to continue their roll throughOctober. Back-to-back weeks againstconerence cellar-dwellers (MSU playsIdaho State next Saturday) shouldhelp the Bobcats close October 6-0 inBig Sky play.
