Notes on the Lancing Archive.

Lancing holds the Woodard Papers, the most important set of documents in the

hands of the Corporation. The Report on this collection by the royal Commission

on Historical Manuscripts is repeated (with the permission of the Secretary) on

pages 22 to 29. This correspondence should be read in conjunction with the letters

of the Founder and his friends which are to be seen in the offices and schools of

the corporation. * S A/fXA X G 5 ̂ 2 L For the rest, the Lancing Archive is full of interest. The Southern Division

Chapter minutes from the foundation to 1923 in the office of the Registrar of the

Corporation and the later minutes in the office of the Divisional Bursar supply a

reliable backbone to the story of the school. The absence of a school magazine

before 1877 is unfortunate, but Mr. Handford's book ( I a 1) goes far to cover the

gaps. In the History sections there is much to illustrate College l i f e : Sam

Brooke's published diary ( I a 7), Evelyn Waugh's fragment of an unpublished

novel ( I a 12) and the letters and reminiscences of O.L.s( I c 1 and I c 2)

offer interesting accounts. The history of Field's House ( I c 5) and the papers

in the same section which relate to the wartime evacuation cover an unusual phase

in Lancing's history, while Common Room minutes of the earlier part of this century

( IV 15 and 16 ) reveal the exercise of authority by boys over boys for thirty years.

School work is not always easily available in school records, but Lancing is

well supplied with copies of prize exercises from the later nineteenth century

( III 3), and the notes under III 9 provide curriculum information for the earlier

twentieth century to be followed by a critique of the school programme in 1945

(III 11) in the hand of Mr. Handford.

Also to be found in section III is material which illustrates the breadth

of life at Lancing over much of its history. The Debating Society minutes (III 19 )

record the speeches of the young Evelyn Waugh and many others. The Haverfield

Society papers ( III 23 to 26 ) show the school looking out in the 1930's, and the

Lancing Malawi pamphlet ( III 36 ) shows i t going out in the 1980's.

The Lancing Archive is large and it f i l l s the excellent room in which i t is

housed. More important s t i l l , Lancing has had the benefit of the distinguished

workof Mr Handford as archivist over many years. Quantity and quality together.
