hOPE that you will enjoyreading this year’s issue of TheLower Quad. this is our fifthvolume of the pictorial magazinedesigned to give a flavour of

events that have taken place over thepast twelve months. One of the thingsthat makes us the successful school thatwe are is the breadth of activities onoffer and many of them are reflected in this production. as ever we areindebted to Kirsty Brown and PhilipMiles for their work on editorial anddesign and i very much hope that youwill enjoy flicking through the pages at your leisure.

academic year 2015/16 has been a stunning one even by our own highstandards: no less than 20 scholarshipsand awards from our 33 year 8 leavers.all of our scholarship group havinggained academic awards to their seniorschools, with others being successful in art, Drama, Sport, and of course thecoveted all-rounder awards. youngerleavers too have gained success at 11+ level; in fact across the board theacademic performance of the school isimproving year on year and improvingfrom a level that was judged as

excellent at the last inspection.those of us who witnessed the

magnificent production of Beauty andthe Beast cannot doubt the talent that isabundant amongst our children.Beautifully choreographed danceroutines, colourful costumes and westEnd standard musical accompanimentmade for a spectacular run. Earlier inthe term the very same children put ina strong performance at commonEntrance, many of them have alsoplayed for successful cricket, roundersor tennis teams. the school has becomeso successful with aBrSM musicexams that this year we were permittedto become an examination centre in ourown right. artists also took everyopportunity to excel and were able toproduce a wonderful exhibition at theend of term.

Of course not only was it my finalyear at the school but we also waved afond farewell to Sasha Place and abbietaylor at the end of term. Farewells are also due to Victoria Fenlon andPeter gregory who we lost during theacademic year. all have made afantastic contribution to the school andwe wish them well. you will be

reading this at a time when the newterm is underway and i would wishnew members of the team, especiallythe new head, Mrs Keep, a long andhappy relationship with the school and its community. it has certainlybeen a very happy place for Sally and myself and we shall miss theeveryday interaction with colleagues, pupils and parents.

Enjoy The Lower Quad, the vibrancyand excitement illustrated is infectious.it simply underlines the school’s mainbelief that happy children will besuccessful and that we all have a talent

if only we can beencouraged tofind it.

DRAMA AND MUSIC

Years 7 & 8 Theatre visitin September, years 7 and 8 went to Lancing college to watch a modernisedversion of Shakespeare’s classic, Romeo and Juliet. the play began with a father anddaughter playing, the setting was a house with boxes everywhere as the familywere moving. the girl started reading Romeo and Juliet and the subplot began.

the capulets seemed to dress in a more formal attire but wore white makeupall over themselves. Juliet’s father looked like he had a tan line because of themakeup under his eyes! the Montagues were in street-like clothing with a redtheme. this wouldn’t be fitting for that era, so it can be assumed that this was howthe little girl imagined them. the stage wasn’t changed during the play; the actorsused boxes as hiding places and a bunk bed as Juliet’s balcony. Most of the propsin the play were either imagined or very different. For example, they replaceddaggers with chopsticks and blood turned into red ribbons which the actors woulddrop onto the floor when ‘wounded’.

the story was modified to make the narrator (little girl) involved, such as the one who supplies the sleeping potion. they also add a comedic side to thenarrator’s involvement by making the main characters only understandShakespearian English, therefore making life a lot harder for the narrator! thestory ends when the narrator finishes reading Romeo and Juliet and she cries to herfather who glances at the book and sighs.

Gabriel A Year 8

Holocaust SurvivorTalkMr Peters and Mr Smith accompanied8S to a highly informative talk atardingly to support their studies inScholarship rS. harry Bibring spokeeloquently and engagingly about hisexperiences as a Jew escaping thepersecution of the nSDaP in austriafollowing the anschluss of March 1938.it was a privilege to hear him speak.the opportunity to hear at first handthe experiences of those involved withthis regime is one that is now rare andcan only last so much longer. that hisaudience sat captivated for over twohours was testament to the power ofwhat he had to say. Perhaps mostinspirational, however, was theresilience with which he recountedwithout bitterness such profoundlyunhappy events as the deaths of hisparents. after escaping to England in1939, he had, as he told us, gone on tolive a happy and fulfilled life.
