WARNING

Do not expose the sampler-detector to direct flame or other high heat sources. Some ofthe chemicals in the ampoules are flammable and/or explosive.

Do not use an outdated sampler-detector because it will give test results you cannottrust.

Do not touch sampler-detector test spots. Dirt and oil from your gloves will give test re-sults you cannot trust.

To avoid test results you cannot trust, open sampler-detector bag and conduct testswhile facing into the wind. This will keep vapors from your equipment and clothing fromcontaminating the sampler-detector.

Do not use this kit if you do not see colors correctly. Color combinations and compari-sons are used during tests. A wrong reading of results might cause you to remove pro-tective equipment while toxic agents are actually present, and you could become acasualty.

Do not let the sampler-detector be exposed to heavy rain or other form of water. Youmay not be able to trust the test results.

Expired/outdated sampler/detector kits will not be used for training.

WARNING

Do not hold sampler-detector in direct sunlight while exposing test spots. You may not beable to trust the test results.

Before breaking glass ampoules (except heater ampoules) place one heater pad on eachside of the sampler-detector, covering the ampoule to be broken. These pads will preventpieces of glass from cutting your gloves or hands.

Avoid hot vapors that may burn you when crushing heater ampoules. You will be facinginto the wind. Hold sampler-detector down and to one side while vapors are venting.

When conducting agent tests at night, you must remove ANY colored lens from theflashlight. Using a colored light may provide a false negative response when testing forblood or blister agents.

Avoid sampling in smoke screens or in smoke from burning debris. You may not be ableto trust the test results.

q. Compare colors to determine safe or danger condition. Turn sampler-detectorupside down and compare colors of test spots with those shown on sampler-detector. Look for a change in color of rub marks on Iewisite detecting tab. Ifyour kit has a fourth instruction card, use it to compare colors to determine safeor danger conditions. If no color or peach color develops for the M256, a positive nerve test is indicated.

WARNINGEach sampler-detector contains 2.6 mg of mercuric cyanide and should be consid-ered hazardous waste. Used or expired kits must be demilitarized and turned into the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Office (DRMO) in accordance withTM 43-0003-30.

You oan compare blood agent (round spot) and Iewisite (rubbing tab) tests afterabout 10 minutes exposure time. Blister agent (H and CX develop color immedi-ately after all ampoules are broken. Nerve agent requires a waiting period ofabout 3 minutes. If no color develops for the M256A1, a positive nerve test isindicated. If peach color develops for the M256, a positive nerve test is indicated.

Change 2 2-17

TESTING FOR TOXIC AGENT VAPORS - Continued.

NOTE Disregard any small blue or blue green areas under plastic rim of nerve agent

spot.

Look at rub marks on Iewisite tablet rubbing tab very closely. At low concentra-tions change may be very slight. Compare with second rub mark before makingjudgment.

Yellow and orange sometimes occur on blood agent spot when no agent ispresent. Pink or blue must be present to indicate blood agents. Any combinationof colors, or rainbow effect, which includes pink or blue should be considered asa positive blood agent test.

If blood agent is indicated, repeat the testing for toxic agent vapors with a freshsampler-detector, for blood agent only. If blood agent is not indicated the secondtime, then blood agent is not present. If blood agent is indicated the second time, then blood agent is present.

2-18

TESTING FOR LIQUID TOXIC ON SURFACES.

If suspected surface contamination is in liquid form (puddles, small drops, or barely visible droplets), test for toxic agent with M8 paper using following procedure.

a. Open kit. Pull up and away from you with top case fastener strap.

b. Remove and open M8 paper.Tear off and discard plastic bag.

2-19

TESTING FOR LIQUID TOXIC AGENTS ON SURFACES - Continued.

NOTERed indicates presence of blister agents (H, L, or CX). Yellow indicates presenceof G-agent. Dark green indicates presence of V-agent.

Some G-agents give a red-brown color which is between typical H and G color.

Some decontaminants will give false positive tests on M8 paper. In an areawhere decontaminants have been used, positive results must be confirmed bytests with sampler-detector.

Some decontaminants also give false indications on the sampler-detector. Youcan determine this by checking the decontaminant itself with a sampler-detector(section II, pages 2-8 through 2-18).

2-20

TESTING FOR TOXIC AGENT VAPORS ABOVE SUSPECTED CONTAMINATED SURFACES.

NOTEThis test can be performed using one of two different methods. Preferred methodis to expose sampler-detector underneath an empty box or can which has beenplaced open end down over suspected contaminated area. This will concentratevapors coming off of surface. Second method is to place activated sampler-detec-tor directly over suspected contaminated area (page 2-33).

a. Test Using Available Boxes or Cans. Use one box or can and a sampler-detector forblood agents. Use separate box or can and a sampler-detector for nerve, blister, andIewisite agent tests.

2-21

TESTING FOR TOXIC AGENT VAPORS ABOVE SUSPECTED CONTAMINATED SURFACES -Continued.

N O T EThe blood agent test on this page and the nerve, blister, and Iewisite agents test, page 2-25, can be run at the same time, provided separate cans or boxes andsampler-detectors are used

GENERAL. This section gives special operating instructions for using the kit in cold weather,in a desert, in the tropics, and in rain or snow.

WARNING

When conducting agent tests at night, you must remove ANY colored lens fromthe flashlight. Using a colored light may provide a false negative responsewhen testing for blood or blister agents.

Avoid sampling in smoke screens or in smoke from burning debris. You maynot be able to trust the test results.

Do not expose the sampler-detector to direct flame or other high heat sourcesSome of the chemicals in the ampoules are flammable and/or explosive.

BETWEEN +50° F (10° C) AND +32° F (0° C). Wait at least 6 minutes after finishing tests beforecomparing colors.

Be sure reagent ampoules are thawed. If reagents are still frozen, wait until they thawcompletely.

Perform procedures in section II pages 2-8 through 2-14.

Expose sampler-detector outdoors for about 10 minutes. Shield sampler from directsunlight.

Bring sampler-detector into warmed area.

Wait for any frozen reagents to thaw.

Perform procedures in section II, pages 2-15 through 2-18.

2-35

DESERT CONDITIONS (HIGH TEMPERATURE AND LOW HUMIDITY). When using the sam-pler-detector in desert conditions, the following step must be taken. Using heater pads, squeezeapproximately half of the Iiquid in ampoule 3 on the nerve agent test spot as in step (g), page2-26. After about five minutes exposure of the nerve test spot, it must be rewet. Using heaterpads, squeeze the remaining Iiquid in ampoule 3 onto the nerve agent test spot.

TROPIC CONDITIONS (HIGH TEMPERATLJRE AND HIGH HUMIDITY).

NOTEFor tropic conditions, a faint blue color may appear in ABSENCE of blister agents(H and HD).

Operation of the sampler-detector is the same as it is for usual conditions. When judging theresults, special care must be taken with Iewisite rub marks. Change in color may be very slightunder tropic conditions. Compare with a second rub mark before making a decision.

RAIN OR SNOW. Protect sampler-detector from rain or snow as much as possible by coveringwith your body or use under a roof or cover

DISCARD DATE. lf the sampler-detector discard dates have expired replace outdated sampler-detectors with new ones from used kits.

REQUISITION OF KIT.

Operator must tell his supervisor when 6 months or less remain on his kit so that a new kitcan be ordered before discard date.

The kit is unserviceable when less than four sampler-detectors remain. Kits with less thanfour sampler-detectors can be combined to make up the contents to twelve sampler-detectors in each kit. In these cases, users of these kits should be directed to observe thediscard dates on each sampler-detector rather than the date on the kit case.

STORAGE.

WARNINGDo not expose the samplerdetector to direct flame or other high heat sources. Some of the chemicals in the ampoules are flammable and/or explosive.

Keep case closed and store kit in a cool, dry place when not in use.
