Ways to Teach Kids about MoneyMoney gives decision-making opportunities to everyone. Educating, motivating and empowering children to become regular savers has become very important nowadays. Here are some simple ways to help educate children about personal finance and managing money :1. As soon as children start counting, introduce them to money. Take an active role

in providing them with information. Observation and repetition are two important ways that help children learn things easily.

2. Discuss money matters with children as they grow. Talk about how to save it, how to make it grow and most importantly, how to spend it wisely.

3. Let the children understand differences between needs, wants and wishes. This will prepare them for making good spending decisions in the future.

4. Take children to a bank to open their own savings accounts. Beginning the regular savings habit early is one of the keys to savings success. Remember, don’t refuse them when they want to withdraw a portion of their savings for a purchase. This may discourage them from saving at all.

5. Keeping good records of money saved, invested, or spent is another important skill young people must learn. To make it easy, use 12 envelopes, 1 for each month, with a larger envelope to hold all the envelopes for the year. Establish this system for each child. Encourage children to place receipts from all purchases in the envelopes and keep notes on what they do with their money.

6. Allow young people to make spending decisions. Whether good or poor, they will learn from their spending choices. You can then initiate an open discussion of spending pros and cons before more spending takes place.

7. Show children how to evaluate TV, radio, and print ads for products. Will a product really perform and do what the commercials say? Is a price offered truly a sale price? Are alternative products available that will do a better job, perhaps for less cost, or offer better value?

8. Alert children to the dangers of borrowing and paying interest. If you charge interest on small loans you make to them, they will learn quickly how expensive it is to take loans on someone else’s money for a specified period of time.

9. When using a credit card or debit card at a restaurant, take the opportunity to teach children about how credit cards or debit cards work. Explain to children how to verify the charges, how to calculate the tip, and how to guard against credit card fraud.

Tips to Help Children Develop Healthy HabitsYou can help your child develop healthy habits early in life that will bring lifelong benefits. As a parent, you can encourage your kids to evaluate their food choice and physical activity habits. Here are some tips that will surely help you. 1. Be a good role model - You don’t have to be perfect all the time, but if kids

see you trying to eat right and getting physically active, they’ll take notice of your efforts. You’ll send a message that good health is important to your family.

2. Keep things positive - Kids don’t like to hear what they can’t do, tell them what they can do instead. Keep it fun and positive. Everyone likes to be praised for a job well done. Celebrate successes and help children and teens develop a good self-image.

3. Get the whole family moving - Plan times for everyone to get moving together. Take walks, ride bikes, go swimming, go to a garden or go to some religious place. Everyone will benefit from the exercise and the time spent together.

4. Limit TV, video game and computer time – Spending too much time on these leads to an inactive lifestyle and children start taking excessive snacks, which causes obesity and heart disease. Limit the time spending on such habits.

5. Encourage physical activities that they’ll really enjoy - Every child is unique. Let your child experiment with different activities until he/she finds something that he/she really loves doing.

6. Pick truly rewarding things - Don’t reward children with video games, candy or snacks for a job well done. Find other ways to celebrate good behavior such as good books or things that involve children in physical activities.

7. Make dinnertime a family time - When everyone sits down together to eat, there’s less chance of children eating the wrong foods or snacking too much. Everyone develops good eating habits together and the quality time spent with the family will be an added bonus.
