One of the newest members of the Genoa Police Department never attended a police academy.

“We started the K-9 program in July of 2012,” said Genoa Police Chief Ty Lynch. “We did have a program before that and the handler got another job and took the dog with him.”

Kane, a 3-year-old German shepherd, is handled by Sgt. Robert Smith, who has been with the Genoa Police Department since 1995. Kane is trained to detect drugs and to search for criminal suspects and missing persons. Kane also serves as a valuable public relations tool for the department, appearing in the annual Genoa Days parade and at other public events.

“One of the things with us having the K-9 program is that it does give a perspective of the police working with the community,” said Lynch, who instituted the department’s motto “In partnership with our community” when he was named police chief in 2010.

“We have six full-time officers, five part-time officers, and five auxiliary members,” Lynch said. The department provides free police support for downtown events. The department recently acquired a piece of equipment that can help keep the streets safe 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“We just purchased a radar trailer and people can go to our website to download a form to request having it in their neighborhood,” Lynch said. The trailer collects data about traffic speed at all times of the day and helps Lynch plan how to most-effectively assign his officers.

The Genoa Fire Department not only provides essential fire and rescue services, but it also hosts the biggest event of the year in the city of 5,000. Genoa Days is an annual four-day event that features carnival rides, a parade, fireworks, water fights, a king and queen contest, and live music.

The fire department has one station in Genoa and one in Kingston, housing one car, a passenger truck, two engines, and one tanker.

The Genoa-Kingston Rescue Squad is located adjacent to the Genoa fire station on Railroad Avenue and houses three ambulances, one rescue vehicle, and one squad vehicle.

GENOA - One of the functions of the new Genoa of Chamber office, located at 111 N. Sycamore St., is housing the Explore Genoa Initiative.

With a mission to educate and promote the community to “think local, shop local first,” through its membership, former chamber executive director Kristie Mulso formed a special committee in February of 2012, which is a branch of the chamber.

“We wanted to tie the chamber members and the community,” Mulso said. “We’re not event driven, more education driven.”

By shopping locally, committee chairperson Carolyn Tobinson said, “your tax dollars stay in town. That helps build your local community and it makes your city a better place to live and work.”

For example, she pointed out, if someone needs car insurance, it would be better if they could get it in town, rather than out of town. The same holds true for other basic services or needs, such as groceries, gas, appliances, etc. Any money spent in town naturally circulates through town.”

Tobinson said the committee meets on a quarterly basis. Besides Tobinson, other members of the committee include: Mark Reynolds, Embroidery Sew Into It; Linda Reynolds, Embroidery Sew Into It; Nicole Moore, Rescource Bank; Josh Kubiak, Edward Jones Invesments; Brenda Jarog, Specialty Gifts; Brian K. Froehlich, Peace of Mind Professional Services; Jim Wilson, James Mechanical, Inc.; and Charmaine Cornwell, Heartland Bank.

The committee produced a new logo and puts out a monthly newsletter to inform the public of events and opportunities.

“We’d like to incorporate into all of the events we host our think local, shop local first mission,” Mulso said.

At one expo, for instance, Mulso said chamber members were given a “passport” to the community, containing coupons to local businesses.

In another promotion, the 12 Days of Christmas, 1,000 raffle tickets were sold. Each day, a winner was chosen; winners could be chosen more than once. Instead of cash, winners were awarded coupons that could only be used in Genoa stores.

Among the future projects the committee is working on, Tobinson said, is a rewards program that will also offer valuable coupons for local Genoa stores.

Tobinson is also hoping to broaden the Explore Genoa committee this year. One of the things they hope to do is set up a regular forum to get more input from the

“We all have to be in this together,” she said. “We encourage the public to support our chamber businesses listed in our website directory and annual area guide. Supporting local and area member businesses is an important key to keeping our community and community entities successful to better serve the public. ...We want the community to understand that our membership and our opportunities for connection are there to provide products and services for the entire community. Not only to think local, but to think throughout our membership.”

The Genoa-Kingston volleyball team was a little taken aback during their home match against North Boone on Sept. 12.

There was noise coming out of the corner of the gym, where dozens of students, clad in matching blue shirts, were chanting and making noise throughout the match. After prodding from senior Connor Bankson, several members of the football team had shown up for the home opener after their team dinner, and plenty of fellow students joined them, creating an atmosphere that pleasantly surprised the Cogs.

“We had a great fan section,” coach Keith Foster said after the match. “It’s great. We love what (athletic director) Phil Jerbi is doing.”

Volleyball is far from the only sport receiving an influx of student support at G-K. Students show up to soccer matches, golf meets, cross country meets, and hundreds show up to cheer on the football team week after week.

The support is all part of what Jerbi, who has been a teacher and coach at G-K for 20 years, coined the “GK Pride Club.” This year, the club’s catch phrase is, “We Are One,” which is meant to show unity and to illustrate that no one sport is more important than another.

Students pay $50 at the beginning of the year, and in return, they receive three shirts, one white, one blue and one orange, and the athletic department will label different games a blue-out, orange-out or white out. Members also enter sporting events for free, where they take part in raffles at designated games.

“The idea behind ‘We Are One’ was to promote kind of a unity,” Jerbi said. “We wanted the football players to come to the volleyball games, we wanted the volleyball players to come to the soccer games, and the soccer guys to come out to the cross country meets. The other thing that ‘We Are One’ does is it gives the kids who are not necessarily athletes, maybe they don’t go out for other extra-curricular activities at all, to give them the

Jerbi expected success. However, he didn’t expect the amount of numbers that ended up signing on, with about 200 kids taking part from a school of just more than 600.

“It’s just really been neat to see,” Jerbi said. “We’ve seen a major improvement in our school culture, in our climate, in our school spirit since we’ve started this. So far, so good.”

At the first few football games, the amount of support became abundantly clear when hundreds of orange- and white-clad fans spilled out of the student section and over to the neighboring seats.

Athletes like volleyball libero Olivia Cotton, basketball point guard Tommy Lucca and football running back Sal Lopez have become leaders in the club, along with several other student-athletes, including Bankson. And as the Cogs’ fall sports season has gained momentum, with volleyball, soccer and football all above .500, GK Pride has picked up steam.

“We just wanted to bring back a lot of pride in G-K,” Bankson said. “Last year, not a lot of people came to our football games, or any sporting event for that matter, and it’s no fun when nobody’s there.

Walking through the halls on the day of a designated game, Bankson said it’s easy to tell the stark difference the program has made in breeding school spirit.

“To me it is (surprising). I figured it would be a gradual thing, more and more people, but it all just happened all at once,” Bankson said. “There’s a ton of people on it. Everywhere you look, there’s a ‘We Are One,’ shirt. Everywhere.”

GENOA – It’s a simple question: Why is it important to work with a nonprofit group or organization within your own community?

The answer is even simpler: Because it benefits everyone.

“As a community our goal is to support one another,” Cortney Strohacker, executive director of the Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce, said. “By joining together, it makes us all prosperous and it makes you proud of the community we call home. It gives you a chance to give back, reinvest and keep our beautiful community what it is.”

“When we all work together, it improves the quality of life,” chamber ambassador Carolyn Tobinson said. “We get to know each other and we grow as a community family. Plus, it’s just good for the soul.”

According to the city website, “Genoa was created by the events of the time and the people who passed through, as well as those who chose to stay and call Genoa home.”

Established on the line of the historic Galena-Chicago Trail in 1835, one of its first structures was the old stagecoach building, the Pacific House, which still stands at 501 W. Main St. The city was settled by Thomas Madison. A Revolutionary War veteran from Ashtabuh County, Ohio, Madison named Genoa after a similarly named town in New York State. He is also the first known storekeeper, with his business dating back to May 12, 1843. Other earlier businesses were a distillery and a sawmill.

Genoa was incorporated as a village in 1876 before becoming an official town on Sept., 9, 1911. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, Genoa, which began as only four blocks, is now the home of 5,193 people. Genoa has been an Illinois Main Street Designated community since 1996. Sponsored by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs, the designation was established in 1993 as a preservation-based, economic program.

Located on Main Street, the business district consists of many quaint, small, family-owned businesses and restaurants that add to the charm of the town. Besides an innovative, award-winning school district, Genoa is blessed with a vibrant park district, which maintains several parks, a swimming pool and much

more. There are also a number of churches, groups and other organizations all dedicated to improving life for its citizens and the community in general.

To help keep Genoa thriving, there are 235 nonprofits listed in Switchboard.com, all of which can benefit from local volunteers in a variety of ways. Opportunities range from donating blood to coaching a youth sports team and just about everything in between.

“We wouldn’t have the beautiful community that we enjoy if it wasn’t for people volunteering and donating,” Strohacker said.

Maybe the best reason of all for volunteering, Tobinson said, is that it sets a good example for the next generation. As part of a special middle school class, students in Carol Hencken’s Leadership and Community Service class are earning credit for performing community service projects.

“It’s good in a small community to do this,” Hencken said. “It’s good for the kids to give back.”

A new gravel walking trail in Genoa is the latest feature in Genoa’s leisure and dining attractions.

“About 10 feet wide, it will connect the city’s pedestrian path that connects the bridge to Russell Woods,” said Rich Gentile, Genoa’s director of public works. “It will provide them a nice nature walk through the prairie project.”

The path was made possible by a $10,000 Green Region grant from ComEd and Openlands last year.

After a leisurely stroll or an afternoon spent in one of Genoa’s nine park properties, visitors may want to grab a quick sandwich or enjoy a sit-down meal.

“We have several dining options available in our community now, with a growing selection,” said Cortney Strohacker executive director of the Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce.

Diners can enjoy pizza or pasta at Rosati’s, an outdoor burger at Five Points Pub in Kingston, a homestyle family meal at Cafe 72, a sandwich at Corner Grill on Main, a full breakfast at Genoa Cafe, or a prime rib on Saturday night at Karlsbad Tavern.

Visitors and residents alike can take a trip back in time during Pioneer Day each summer, enjoy weekly “wine downs” at Prairie State Winery, ice skate at a free downtown rink in the winter, and take in the fall play and spring musicals at Genoa-Kingston High School.

Each March, the Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce hosts its free annual Home and Business Expo, which gives everyone in the community a chance to meet local business owners and learn about the goods and services they offer.

“It continues to be our biggest event of the year,” Strohacker said.

Visitors who enjoy outdoor activities can enjoy tent or cabin camping at Walcamp along the scenic Kishwaukee River in Kingston. The Genoa Park District has four canoes that visitors can rent for an afternoon of paddling on the river.

Duck races in the Kishwaukee River are a popular attraction each September.

Shoppers can spend a leisurely day browsing the monthly open-air market during the summer and fall months, or the many shops in the downtown area.

“We have a unique blend of traditional and specialty shops,” Strohacker said. Nine new businesses opened in downtown Genoa in 2013, partly because of the 10,000 vehicles that pass through downtown every day.

Paul Bafia works hard to make sure the parks in Genoa meet the recreational and fitness needs of the township’s residents.

“We’ve got an outdoor swimming pool, a family/kiddie pool area, we have 2 body slides and a splash pad that we added a couple years ago,” Bafia said. “We also have a 14,000-square-foot fitness center that has a kids’ zone area.”

Bafia, the executive director of the Genoa Township Park District, is responsible for those recreational facilities that are included in the nine park district locations in Genoa Township. The district’s properties occupy 105 acres of land.

“Most parks have playgrounds, and we have soccer fields and softball fields, too,” Bafia said. Chamberlain Park has a skateboard park that is popular during warm-weather months, and the park district also hosts free live music events in the summer.

The fitness center, which is on the second floor of the city hall building at 333 E. First St., features an indoor walking track, cardio and fitness equipment, Some of the equipment is wheelchair accessible and suitable for special needs members.

The trained and dedicated staff at the center is able to offer personalized service at the fitness center, and teach classes in subjects that include fitness, exercise techniques, nutrition, and cross training.

The park district recently partnered with DeKalb County Community Gardens to turn a vacant lot near Genoa’s downtown into a community vegetable garden.

“We built 50 5-by-10 foot raised beds,” said Dan Kenney, founder and director of the DeKalb County Community Gardens. The plots are rented for the growing season, and any beds that are not rented are planted by volunteers to grow produce for donation to food pantries.

Those were just three of the reasons the Genoa Chamber of Commerce board decided to move its offices to 111 N. Sycamore St. this past May. For the last 17 years, the chamber office was located on the top floor of the Heartland Bank & Trust Company, formerly Citizens National Bank, at 327 W. Main St.

The new chamber office, which is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, has a boardroom and a kitchen on the first floor. Among many other advantages, the new office can be used for early morning meetings, as well as provide more space for member events and activities.

Thanks to word of mouth, the chamber’s monthly community newsletter and the giant sign outside the building, it didn’t take long for the public to find the chamber’s new home. Community and members are welcome to stop in to visit or to gather information about current events, membership, and maps for traveling, biking and finding one’s way around the local area.

In true community spirit, a number of chamber and community members assisted in moving and renovating the chamber’s new home, including: Paul Beauchamp, of Innovative Restorations, who painted the interior and exterior of the new home; Josh Kubiak, of Edward Jones Investment, who painted and scraped; Michael Cirone of 3 Roses Realty, who provided new office furniture for the chamber; Mark Reynolds of Embroidery Sew Into it, who provided all the wall logos, carpets and accessories; as well as Deno Kramer of WK Landscape Services, who donated the landscaping; and five students from Genoa-Kingston High School, who earned community service hours for painting and scraping. Others who helped were Spencer Mulso; Arielle Emmens; Alanna Wilcox, Kayleigh Engles and Ben Brzoska.
