Rise of the Cloud
Increasingly demanding environment
What We’ve Been Seeing Move to the Cloud:
• Past 5 Years – Student Mgt Systems, Curriculum, Hosted Web sites, Niche software products
• Past 2 Years & Now: Email systems, Anti-spam/virus, file storage, More
• Leading Providers: Google, Microsoft, ….
Challenges in Getting to the Cloud:
• Internet Bandwidth, Reliability, & Performance• Concerns about Security, and Who has Access
to your Data• How do I get my data to the Cloud?• Who’s throat do I choke if I have issues?• How do I integrate multiple systems in Cloud,
on premise, etc.
Assess, Plan, & Prioritize
• Review & Assess your Key applications, usage, and compare to “Cloud” based versions.
• Assess, Test, & Increase Internet Bandwidth & Consider adding Redundancy & Reduce Single Points of Failure.
• Leverage Best Practices for Moving to cloud from vendors, other districts, and expert advisors.
Test, Pilot & Validate Before Migrating
• Some cloud providers allow for evaluation and testing for 30 days or longer.
• After a thorough evaluation of your options determine your best options and then conduct a pilot with a subset of your users to validate.
• While doing the pilot create a detailed migration plan and if needed leverage experienced resources to assist with the migration and training.
• Depending on application you may not need to do these processes.
Train Admin. Staff & End Users
• Your I.T. staff’s role may change depending on how much you move to the cloud and they should be trained accordingly.
• The more that end users can be trained and educated on usage of applications the less help desk issues you should see, and the better utilization of applications.
• In some situations it may require more communication to prepare for migration to the cloud.
