Around the World in Seven Weeks

This summer, your preschooler will “travel around the world” exploring the continents with the Gilmour Preschool Summer Camp. Each week, we will focus on a different continent as we delve into the culture, language, foods, clothing and daily life of that particular region of the world. Our “itinerary” will include cooking, reading stories, discovering the region’s animals, utilizing native art techniques and designs, listening to traditional music and learning how children live and play in that area. We hope your child can join us on our expedition around the world!

ANtARCtiCA: “HELLO” fROM ANtARCtiCA Week 1 OffeRed: June 10 - June 14Brrr! We will begin our trip at the South Pole, the coldest continent on Earth. During this week, your child will march with the penguins and explore the polar region. We will explore questions such as “ What should we bring to wear?” and “What will we eat?” Scientific researchers inhabit the area so we will need to learn to say “hello” in many different languages.

NORtH AMERiCA: “HELLO” OR “BONjOUR” fROM CANADA AND “HOLA” fROM MExiCO Week 2 OffeRed: June 17 - June 21Continuing on our journey, we will stop in Canada and Mexico to learn more about our neighbors to our north and south. We will discover our many similarities and many differences between our countries. We will take our time exploring all that Canada, the second largest country in the world, has to offer. In Mexico, we will view some of the most impressive murals, sculptures and jewelry from the Mayan Indians who once inhabited this region.

SOUtH AMERiCA: “ HOLA” fROM ARgENtiNA AND “OLA” fROM BRAziL Week 3 OffeRed: June 24 - June 28From there, we will explore the countries that make up the beautiful continent of South America. We will immerse ourselves in the Amazon rain forest, trekking among exotic plants and animals. Our journey will also lead us to Angel Falls, the world’s highest waterfall.

EUROPE: “BONjOUR” fROM fRANCE AND “BONgiORNO” fROM itALY Week 4 OffeRed: July 1 - July 5 (fOuR-day Week)These are just two of the countries that make up the continent of Europe. Your student will enjoy being exposed to a variety of traditions. From the chocolates of Belgium and folk music of Bulgaria to the Spanish “Running of the Bulls” and winter sports of Finland, we will study the exciting cultures of many of these countries. (full-day cost is $250. Half-day cost is $150.)

ASiA: “NiHAO” fROM CHiNA Week 5 OffeRed: July 8 - July 12We will arrive in time for the Lantern Festival, or Yuanxiao Jie, a traditional Chinese festival. We’ll see the festival’s parade with its lanterns, lions and dancing dragons. Our journey might even land us face-to-face with the giant panda, an animal only found in the southwest mountains of China. Art has a long history in China; we will experiment with some of the fine artistic forms such as calligraphy and origami.

AfRiCA: “jAMBO” fROM KENYA Week 6 OffeRed: July 15 - July 19 The Swahili spoken in Kenya is just one of thousands of languages spoken throughout the enormous continent. During this stop on our world-wide tour, we will learn about some of the exotic animals who call Africa home, look at the types of clothing worn in Africa and the food eaten there. The children will explore math concepts by playing Mancala, an African counting game.

AUStRALiA: “gOOD DAY MAtE” Week 7 OffeRed: July 22 - July 26The last stop on our journey will take us to Australia where we can hop alongside the kangaroos and laugh like the kookaburras. This continent has so much to offer from lush rainforests to big cities to the Great Barrier Reef full of various sea creatures. Even though we will be there in July, it will be winter in Australia. It will be nice to return home to summer, but not before seeing some of the major highlights such as the Sydney Opera House and Uluru in the outback.

anImal Planet Week 1 OffeRed: June 10 – June 14Let’s have great fun with the Animal Kingdom! Camper teams will choose pack identities such as wolves, lions, tigers and bears. These identities will be explored and strengthened through sports activities and art banners. Our field trip for the week will be to Cow Camp in Burton, Ohio.

InventOR’S WORkShOP Week 2 OffeRed: June 17 – June 21 How can we be inventors? Do we simply improve on what we have or create something entirely new? It’s up to you! We will explore the ideas of invention during our Day Camp activities. Learn all about Gak and why this could also be called “Monster Week.” Campers will even brainstorm ideas about improving or inventing an amusement park ride when we go to Fun ‘N’ Stuff.

exPlORatIOn Week 3 OffeRed: June 24 – June 28How cool can this camp possibly be? Let’s explore Gilmour’s 144-acre campus! What games can we play and what team-building activities can we enjoy in a wooded area, an open field, an artificial turf and near a small lake? We will also visit the Western Reserve Historical Society to expand our week of exploration.

PaRty In the u.S.a. Week 4 OffeRed: July 1 – July 5 (fOuR-day Week) For the entire week, let’s celebrate the core principles of America: independence, equality, freedom and the right to pursue happiness! Play games like your favorite American athletes and be your own favorite American artist as you design a tie-dyed t-shirt. And guess what? We’re having a pool party at Mayfield Village Pool! (Cost is $250.)

ImaGIne that! Week 5 OffeRed: July 8 – July 12Imagine your own sport! Let’s look at all the fun of our traditional games and create our own games to play. Let’s take leadership to the highest level. Imagine running your own exciting country! We’ll visit the Fairport Harbor Marine Museum and the President James A. Garfield House to fill our imagination. We’ll also make puppets and create fun skits. You get to imagine and present your own stories!

lIvInG leGendS Week 6 OffeRed: July 15 – July 19How are legends made? Campers will try to answer this question by engaging in fun activities that test their skills and talents. For inspiration, boys will explore the archaeological and historical past of Cleveland by visiting the Rockefeller House and girls will learn all about Amelia Earhart at the International Women’s Air & Space Museum.

BeSt Of the BeSt Week 7 OffeRed: July 22 – July 26This is the time for everyone to shine! What is the best you can do? Campers and counselors will participate in favorite activities, brainstorm awesome contest ideas and end their Day Camp experience with a talent show to make everyone proud. We will enjoy an encore trip to the Mayfield Village Pool!

flOWeRS, “ChIa headS” and StePPInG StOneS - GRadeS 3-5 Week OffeRed: June 10 – June 14Enjoy basic gardening activities such as planting, mulching, watering and organic pest control. Campers make their own stepping stones, “Chia Heads” and decorated flowerpots with plants to take home. On field trips to the Cleveland Botanical Garden, the Learning Garden (CBG) and the Holden Arboretum, campers learn about various plants and discuss how to use them in different garden designs. In the afternoons, these campers will participate in athletic and creative activities.

aCe Of BakeS I - GRadeS 6-8 Week OffeRed: June 10 – June 14 Measure and follow recipes. Create various homemade edible delights. Take a field trip to a local bakery to see how a professional kitchen operates. Space is strictly limited to 12 campers, so be first to sign up!

aCe Of BakeS II - GRadeS 6-8 Week OffeRed: June 17 – June 21This baking camp is an extension of Ace of Bakes I. You will follow different recipes for additional treats. You can take both camps together or individually. Space is limited to 12 campers, so be first to sign up!

JeWelRy GalORe (HALf DAY 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.) - GRadeS 6-8 Week OffeRed: June 24 – June 28Use glass, fimo clay, seed beads and other materials to make your own jewelry. Meet with a local jewelry artist and learn how to develop your own jeweler’s style. Campers will also enjoy swimming in the Athletic Center natatorium and ice skating in the Gilmour Ice Arena. (Cost is $175.)

dISCOveR nORtheaSt OhIO - GRadeS 6-8 Week OffeRed: July 1 – July 5 (fOuR-day Week)Explore some of the best kept secrets right here at home! Trips will include the Cuyahoga National Park, the Steamship William G. Mather, the West Side Market and the U.S.S. Cod Submarine. Enjoy picnic lunches and other special treats each day. Northeast Ohio is a real treasure trove! (Cost is $250.)

dIGItal ROCk StaRS! - GRadeS 6-8 Week OffeRed: July 8 – July 12Learn to put together some rockin’ tunes using Gilmour Academy’s state-of-the-art digital music lab. The only musical experience you need is an interest in listening to your favorite band or artist. We will write, record, edit and mix everything using a variety of music software on the computers. You will even create your very own music CD. The week is ended with a Rock Star Showcase, where all family and friends can come and hear everything you have been up to during the week.

dIGItal muSIC vIdeOS! - GRadeS 6-8 Week OffeRed: July 15 – July 19Write and direct your own music video! Star on the screen! Edit the video! Using our state-of-the-art digital production studio, we will explore creating an original music video from start to finish. You bring your creativity from the previous week OR we provide music for you. On the last day, we will have a Music Video Premiere for all family and friends with a take-home DVD of the week’s fun time!

dIGItal PhOtOS and SCRaPBOOkS - GRadeS 6-8 Week OffeRed: July 22 – July 26Using a brand new digital camera, take pictures of nature, people and even wild animals on a trip to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo! Explore basic editing and ways to share your digital images with others! At the end of the week, you get to take your new camera home with you! $50 fee will cover cost of take-home camera. (Cost $350.)

2013 Hockey Camps

(Ages 4 – 14)Gilmour Hockey Camps allow for intensive skill-specific training for players who love the game of hockey and desire to be the best at their positions. Players are grouped by age and ability to help build confidence and develop their skills.

Learn-to-PLay-Hockey camP, cost $250Week offered: June 10 - 14 ages 4-12This is an instructional program for new or nearly-new hockey players. It is recommended that participants have a basic skating background. The emphasis of this program is on developing an appreciation of ice hockey using the American Development Model (ADM) introduced by USA Hockey to successfully develop American Hockey players. Ask us about our Rental Equipment Program.

Hockey/BaseBaLL camP, cost $350Week offered: June 10 - 14 ages 6-14 Hockey/Baseball Camp provides a unique opportunity for players to receive individual and team instruction in both sports. The camp focuses on skills that will enable players to improve their individual performance. On-campus facilities will be used as well as off-campus batting cages.

Hockey/GoLf camP, cost $350Week offered: June 17 - 21 ages 6-14Whether you are a beginning golfer or a seasoned competitor, this camp provides an atmosphere of safe, informative and fun instruction. Campers will receive excellent hockey and golf training provided on the Gilmour campus and at the Golf Dome.

“tHe PUck stoPs Here” GoaLtenDInG camP Week offered: June 24 - 28 ages 6-14 cost $350The puck stops here! The most important position on ice is the goaltender. This camp has developed an innovative program that fosters confidence while significantly increasing the goaltender’s ability to stop the puck. The PSH staff believes that goaltenders need to find a style that fits their size, flexibility, quickness and creativity.

“sHoot anD score” camP Week offered: June 24 - 28 ages 6-14 cost $350The number one focus of this camp is to score goals. Scoring strategies covered include wrist shots, snap shots, backhands, dekes, tips and rebounds. We will teach the basics of on-ice vision, awareness and reading the goaltender. Become a goal scorer!

HIGH IntensIty traInInG camP – “H.I.t.” Weeks offered: July 8 - 12 & July 22 - 26 ages 6-14 cost $450The High Intensity Training Camp is Gilmour’s signature hockey camp. It is one of the best camps in North America when ice time, instruction and cost are compared. Players skate close to FIVE hours a day. The instructional staff demands hard work physically and mentally. All drills are designed to increase the player’s speed as well as the ability to read and react quickly. The “H.I.T” Camp is for players who have developed a solid base of fundamentals and are playing at an upper level of competition in their age group.

GIrLs’ oVernIGHt Hockey camP Week offered: July 14 - 19 ages 6-14 cost $575 The Girls’ Overnight Ice Hockey Camp is a week designed to help players develop fundamental skills. The emphasis is placed on individual development as well as team skills and concepts. The camp features a small coach-to-player ratio. Our staff includes instructors who played college hockey. We provide the best possible learning environment in our facilities. Check-in begins at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Camp concludes Friday at 1 p.m. Full equipment is required. The cost includes housing and meals for the week. The cost for commuting campers is $450.

Hockey/Boys Lacrosse camP Week offered: July 15-19 ages 6-14 cost $350 Hockey/Boys Lacrosse Camp provides a unique opportunity for players to receive individual and team instruction in both sports. The camp focuses on skills that will enable players to improve their individual performance. Full equipment is required for both sports.

“one-on-one” Defensemen camP Week offered: July 29 - august 2 ages 6-14 cost $350This specialized camp for defensemen focuses on one-on-one situations, angling, backward skating and proper checking technique. These skills are the foundation of the defensemen’s game and empower them to be the backbone of any team.

PoWer skatInG camP Week offered: august 5 - 9 ages 6-14 cost $350Power skating is the most overlooked skill in hockey. Our staff will teach the techniques necessary to improve stride, agility, speed, quickness and power. The focus will be on proper use of edges to maximize speed and body control. This camp offers approximately four hours of on-ice instruction per day. Additional off-ice instruction will focus on leg strength and balance.

aDVanceD conDItIonInG camP Week offered: august 12 - 16 ages 6-14 cost $350The best camp for players looking to prepare for the upcoming season. The high-tempo drills are designed to improve the knowledge and skills necessary to play this fast-paced game. Three hours of ice time each day combined with off-ice conditioning will jump start the season! The camp is designed for varying ages and degrees of ability.

Gilmour’s got game. Do you?find out at our challenging Basketball Camp.Learn from experienced Gilmour coaches and players in our spectacular state-of-the-art Athletic Center. The 17,000-square-foot gymnasium has six baskets with glass backboards and the 84 x 50- foot court has the same type of surface that the Cleveland Cavaliers practice on at their facility. The setting is conducive to learning the game.

Gilmour Coed Soccer Academy will teach boys and girls the skills and team tactics necessary to be successful in soccer. It will prepare players for the next level of their playing careers. The camp will stress sportsmanship and respect for all aspects of the game. If you love volleyball, want to learn to play or improve your skills, Volleyball Academy is for you! This camp will provide the essentials for enhancing players’ abilities. Campers will hone their techniques, while learning team concepts and developing the individual skills necessary to be successful under the direction of the Lancer’s state-ranked coaching staff. If you’re an experienced football player or just starting to play, Gilmour Football Academy will concentrate on the fundamentals of this All-American sport. GoLf camP Weeks offered: June 17 - 21 and June 24 - 28 age group: Boys and Girls 5 - 12 years oldThe golf instructional staff is dedicated to achieving the ultimate goal of helping your child learn and enjoy the sport of golf in a fun and safe environment. In addition to Gilmour Academy’s on-campus driving range, short game area and putting green, campers will play nine holes of golf on the final day of camp at a local golf course. Equipment: golf clubs (putter, wedge and driver) and bag, golf balls, sneakers or golf shoes, change of clothes and swimsuit/trunks (when needed) are recommended but not required.

Boys Lacrosse camP Week offered: July 15 - 19 age group: Boys 5 - 12 years oldThe Lacrosse Camp staff is composed of college and high school coaches who understand the importance of fundamental skill development. Players of all levels will refine their skills and receive quality instruction on our Pro-Grass Turf stadium. Equipment: full equipment required.

oUtDoor aDVentUre camP Weeks offered: July 22 - 26 age group: Boys and Girls 7 - 12 years oldThis program for girls and boys is designed to focus on developing skills in a variety of activities and adventure trips. Camp may include the following activities: hiking, fishing, orienteering, rock climbing, canoeing, survival skills, arts and crafts, team building and an overnight camping trip. (cost is $425.)

mULtI-sPorts camP Weeks offered: July 29-august 2, august 5-9 and august 12-16 age group: Boys and Girls 5 - 12 years oldOur goal is to provide a positive, enthusiastic and enjoyable camp experience for participants while they sample a multitude of sports and activities at a non-competitive level. Equipment: shorts, sneakers, swimsuit and sunscreen! Most necessary sports equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring your own.

Summer Camp Refund PolicyRegistration fees for Gilmour’s Summer Camp programs that are paid online are non-refundable unless cancelled by June 1.
