Delivering
Following another highly successful Charity Challenge run-walk collaborative fundraising event, our Jackson County Community Foundation affiliate had a fabulous turnout for its October Community Celebration. The featured speakers were Grammy-Award winning singer Kathy Mattea and the honorable Gaston Caperton. Through her “Finding Your Path” presentation, Kathy shared how the arts have shaped her life and how the arts bring all of us together as a community. Her inspirational talk was a highlight of the evening, along with a joint program by the Ripley and Ravenswood High School choirs, the fall grants presentations and the announcement of the arrival of a $2 million bequest from Bob and Helen Lester.
October 18, 2013 – fifty years ago to the day, Parkersburg Community Foundation (word ‘area’ added later), held its first official meeting. A handful of concerned citizens who had met for two years prior, carefully selected the new foundation’s leaders, naming Ed Dils as chairman. From those humble beginnings, with a bank balance of zero, Our Community’s Foundation – Parkersburg Area Community Foundation and Regional Affiliates of Doddridge, Jackson, Little Kanawha Area, Mason and Ritchie Counties – has evolved. Today the Foundation delivers more than $1.6 million annually to benefit our local citizens and their communities, and manages nearly $38 million within 400+ charitable funds.
On this same date recently, the Foundation dedicated its Center for Philanthropy headquarters. As it is the custom within community foundations to name funds in honor of their founders, it’s only natural that the Foundation would name the Center to honor the local family which generously sponsored much of the facility’s purchase cost, and is contributing further resources for renovations.
We’re delighted to announce our
headquarter’s new name: “The Vasan Family – Center for Philanthropy,” in honor of Dr. Srini and Dr. Usha Vasan of Vienna, WV, and their children, Dr. Neil Vasan and Dr. Nina Vasan. We were delighted that Mrs. Jane Dils (wife of Ed) could join us in celebrating the naming of the Center’s entry foyer to honor Mr. Edwin L. D. Dils. Ed’s dedicated service of more than fifty years opened the doors of a community foundation through which generations of supporters have continued to enter and to give of their time, talent and resources to improve our area.
In addition, the Holmes and Bell families joined the “1620 Club,” our honorary society for persons who help underwrite the Center’s needs. Members of the 1620 Club being recognized on a display wall.
Later that evening, many citizens came out to “Celebrate the Arts” through a major progressive event organized and hosted for the Foundation by Downtown PKB, the Parkersburg Actors Guild, Parkersburg Art Center and historic Smoot Theatre, making this date a very memorable and meaningful celebration of the Foundation’s first 50 years.

A Rollover that Makes SenseThere’s still time to complete a charitable IRA
rollover! This Pension Protection Act (2006) provision was extended through 2013. Persons age 70.5 or older may roll over up to $100,000 from an individual retirement account (IRA) directly to a qualifying charity without recognizing the assets transferred to the charity as income.
If you’d like to assign all or part of your 2013
distribution for charitable purposes, please contact our staff. Important—transfer must occur directly from the plan administrator to the Foundation. In states like West Virginia, where there is no state-level charitable deduction, some taxpayers may benefit from a charitable IRA rollover. As always, we encourage you to consult your professional tax advisor.
“Charlie’s Angels” have raised more than $100,000 for the American Cancer Society and created the Angela “Charlie” Lilly Memorial Fund to commemorate Charlie’s special life and her service to the community. Charlie died at age 38 from breast cancer, following a valiant 3-year struggle. “Charlie’s Angels” is led by her sister Wendy Lilly, with sister Jackie Stewart, mother Dixie Lilly and aunt Sarah Willet, and other key team members.
Honoring the Spirit of Philanthropy The Mason County Community Foundation
