PRINCIPAL’S REPORTThe end of term is fast approaching, with plenty of teaching and learning yet to be done. We have had HSC markers assessing our Year 12 students in Drama, Industrial Technology (Wood) and Music. I attended the HSC MAD night last week to view the Drama and Music performances and would like to congratulate the students for their professional delivery of their works, some of which were technically quite difficult. All pieces were performed with confidence. The Industrial Technology major works demonstrated our student’s creativity and uniqueness with their designs. Our HSC art students had a successful exhibition in the Gloucester Gallery before their works were sent to Sydney for marking. Year 12 have completed their Trial HSC examinations and feedback from these results will assist them to prepare for the actual HSC examinations early next term. We wish them every success.

This week is School Administration Staff Recognition Week. Our SAS team do an incredible job (often behind the scenes) in keeping the school functioning in such a streamlined and well organised manner. The team is led by Christine Moulds (School Administration Manager) who manages the office staff, finances, resource planning, student placements / timetable and the change over to LMBR. Front office staff are Patrice Reynolds, Amanda Moore and Erica Ribbons, who field all phone calls and inquiries and then direct these to the appropriate staff, manage attendance, enrolments, excursions, payments and process accounts. Jenne West supports the front office staff with duties and manages merit and OPAL systems and supports the library. Julia Green is the Science Laboratory assistant and her role is to manage the chemicals and prepare teaching and learning materials for science practical lessons. Erica Ribbons and Robyn Hooke share the role of kitchen assistant. Their role is to collate all food orders, shop for the practical lessons and prepare the

trays for practical cooking and hospitality classes and special events run by the Hospitality staff and students. Dave Fitzhardinge is GHS’ Technical Support Officer and he manages the information technology systems in the school as well as supporting students and staff when difficulties arise with electronic devices. He also researches the best value for money devices to ensure our school is equipped with appropriate and current IT. Janelle Davis, Anne Martin and at times Layne Ross support our students and teachers in the role of Student Learning Support Officer (SLSO). They provide in class support and small group support to foster student academic, social and wellbeing needs. They play an important role in linking families to school.

Julie Schumann is also an SLSO with the key role of administering the Quicksmart program within the school. Narelle Bignell is our Community Liaison Officer (CLO) and manages the fortnightly newsletter and school promotions within the community. Brian (Barney) McInnes is our General Assistant. He knows everything there is to know about the layout of boundaries, electrical and plumbing in the school and when and who to contact as maintenance issues arise. Barney is also responsible for the maintenance and up keep of the grounds, and you would be well aware of the large area he has to maintain in 2 ½ days each week. Mal Graham is our Agriculture Assistant and works closely with the Ag students and teachers to get cattle ready for shows, ensure fencing is maintained, pasture improvement and maintain the Ag gardens. We would also like to thank the casual staff that fill in all these duties when regular staff are absent: Tori Grady, Chloe Grady and Alison Chapman. Gloucester High School thanks you.

IMPORTANT PARENT INFORMATIONThe following information is an extract from the Department of Education’s ‘Requirement for all sport and activity’ document.“9. Medical insurance • Principals must advise parents that in the event of injury, no personal injury insurance cover is provided by the NSW Department of Education for students in relation to school sporting activities, physical education lessons or any other school activity. The department’s public liability cover is fault-based and would only be applicable if the department were to breach its duty of care to students in a way that may result in claims for compensation. “

This note is to inform you of the Department’s document. It is also important to note that if an ambulance is called for your child while they are at school, this will not be at your expense.

If you would like clarification on these matters please contact me to discuss this further.

Mrs Trudi Edman, Relieving Principal

HAYLEY RECEIVES GOLD - YEAR 12 STUDENT 2016Sipping cold sparkling apple juice and talking to the Governor of NSW whilst gazing out over the crystal waters of Sydney Harbour may not be your average Wednesday afternoon. But there we were! Owen and Michelle Johns were the embodiment of pride as they joined me in celebrating the presentation of their daughter, Hayley’s, Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. As erstwhile Principal of Gloucester High School, and as Hayley’s Duke of Ed Award Leader, I had watched her grow in knowledge, skill and attitude over the four years she spent meeting the onerous requirements of the Award. Completing Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards is no mean feat. It means spending hours on each of four categories: Skill, Physical Activity, Service and Adventurous Journey (and, for Gold, a Residential Project). Not many people make it this far.

In his speech to the award recipients and their parents, the Governor, His Excellency General David Hurley stressed the fact that employees really take notice when they see “Gold Duke of Ed” within a job application. Further to this, though, he emphasised the personal value of completing the Award in developing traits like persistence, resilience, social conscience and teamwork – and Hayley has these in spades.

Added to the occasion of receiving her Gold, Hayley was selected to address the audience on behalf of all recipients – a great honour indeed, and one which she performed with precision, grace and good humour.Well done, Hayley! We are all very proud of you. Your future is bright. Receiving your Gold Award is the first of many giant steps before you. May you always approach life with the same focus and dedication you have thus far shown.

Mr Pat Cavanagh, Principal School Leadership

TAS – TIMBER HSC MAJOR PROJECTS 2017The year long efforts of our Y12 IT-Timber students fronted the HSC marking team on Tuesday 29 August. All projects were well presented and represented the student’s interest and showcased their skills development and creativity in timber design. Projects on show were a herpetarium coffee table, a slim line hall table, a TV / entertainment unit and a curved top computer desk - complete with LED back lighting. An interesting mix of projects to say the least, however, all reflected the creative talents of the class.

All students completed quality work and developed a range of skills and knowledge that will assist them in the years to come. Did I mention time management skills? Current Year 11 students take note; time management will be a huge part of my classroom lectures during their time in Year 12. For now, thanks to the successful students who worked hard to ensure their projects and folios were well presented and reflective of their efforts; thanks to Mr Tonitto and Mr Wisely for assistance during my carpal tunnel release recovery. Also, a big thank you to the local suppliers who have provided our students with materials to work with. Here is a sneak peek of their work.

HSC VISUAL ARTSThe HSC Visual Arts Exhibition for 2017 at the Gloucester Gallery will come to an end on Saturday 9 September.

This year the candidates have produced an excellent collection of individual artworks. Each student has chosen a different media area to express their ideas and develop their techniques to produce their final Body of Work.

Amber Franks has produced a clever narrative on her family including some clues that highlight her Maltese heritage. Extending the concept of drawing she has produced an excellent series of drawings that involve numerous nails and black string. As well as digital images that enhance the series.

Ruby Pippen started looking at the stars for ideas and evolved her perceptions into a very complex assortment of dry point etchings and weavings. Her final works have become very cerebral in their composition, challenging the viewer to dig deep into their understanding of the workings of the human brain.

Indira Virzi Hartigan has literally seen the light and has produced a rich collection of images inspired by the sunset. Indira also started off investigating herself and how she identifies with the landscape around her. Initially manipulating photos to try to find a composition and technique that she liked, she has arrived at a series of paintings dripping with media that celebrate the patterns and colours of the evening sky.

MARINE AND AQUACULTURE EXCURSION On Thursday 24 August a small group of Marine and Aquaculture students travelled to the Port Stephens Fisheries Research Facility near Nelson Bay.

The facility has a total staff of 85 with the majority being Biologists in many different fields. The research is concerned with improving aquaculture technologies such as recirculation tanks to hold intensive fish production, biosecurity, disease management, efficient oyster production, and many others.

A former student of Gloucester High School, Mr Walter Scifleet is one of the main marine biologists working on oyster diseases. The oyster industry in NSW is very financially important. Mr Scifleet is trying to breed Sydney Rock Oysters that are naturally resistant to “QX fever” and

“Winter mortality”, diseases that can cause huge financial losses for the industry as our Sydney Rock Oysters are rated the best in the world.

Other biologists are investigating ways to breed our native Australian Bass, aka, the local perch. These fish are one of the best sport fish in Australia and are much sought after by local fishers. This facility’s aim is to breed hundreds of thousands of fish to restock all of the eastern rivers of

Australia.

Students were given a two hour tour of the facility introducing them to large scale aquaculture operations such as growing single celled algae in artificial light conditions in labs. The Institute covers an area of about 13 ha and includes a wide range of buildings to meet the needs of all activities on the site.

After the tour students then ordered fish and chips for lunch, just around the corner, and then returned to school. Many thanks to Mr Rob Seale for driving the bus.

THE NEW NSW PUBLIC SCHOOLS’ FINANCE SYSTEM IS UP AND RUNNINGThis week Gloucester High School transitioned to the new NSW Public Schools’ Finance System. We can now process receipts and payments again, though we are still in the learning phase. Your patience and understanding is greatly appreciated. Once we are more familiar with the system we can see this being a much better program than the previous one. If you have any questions, please contact Chris Moulds on 02 65581605.

THE 2017 GLOUCESTER MOUNTAIN MAN TRI-CHALLENGE WILL SEE A NUMBER OF SCHOOL STUDENTS PARTICIPATING FOR THE FIRST TIMEYear 11 student Andy Hughes will be completing the course as an individual. His all-round fitness level and determined attitude should see him complete the challenge despite any obstacles.

Jake Moulds, Hamish McClure and Cadel Beard will be competing together as a team which has previously seen great success in the school Tri Challenge. Jake noted that he had a competitive team and is expecting to come home strongly in the run leg. Hamish will enjoy the kayaking component of the course whilst also achieving excellent results as he has access to the Barrington River which he lives alongside. Cadel stated “His team has done the school event a number of times - this year it was time to step up and tackle the town competition”

A recently formed team consisting of Cameron Dunlop, Tristyn Beard and Tahnee Yates will also be competing this year. It will be interesting to see which Beard will record the fastest time for the bike leg as they train regularly together and are extremely competitive. Tahnee Yates is a proven cross country runner having come first in the recent zone competition. Cameron Dunlop is a successful athlete in a variety of sports including athletics and horse riding, and therefore we believe that his determination and achievement will be unfaltering in the kayak leg.

Kayden Schumann and Beau Blanch will be another team. Being the youngest; this team should not be underestimated as both boys are super competitive and keen to “take on people older than ourselves”.

Best wishes to our students for this weekend’s competition.

GHS TRI CHALLENGE FRIDAY 22 SEPTEMBERThere are two weeks left to the annual running of the Gloucester High School Tri Challenge on the last day of this Term, Friday 22 September. Participants should be well into their training for the 10km ride, 4km kayak and 4km run. Below is some general information for parents about the running of the event.

Attendance - As this is a normal school day all students are expected to take part as either a competitor or a race marshal. Please note that there will be no teaching staff or students left at GHS after 9.45am (This is the time that the buses leave to take the students out to the course). Students will be bussed to their positions on the course. A permission note indicating cost will be sent out in Week 10.

Student Course Marshals - The student race marshals are stationed around the course with a supervising teacher to encourage and assist the competitors where necessary. Students will be out on the course between 10am and 1pm so will need to take water and snacks, as well as closed in shoes (no thongs, or sandals) and appropriate sun protection.

Food – Students will need to bring their own drinks and snacks for when they are on the course between 10am and 1pm. A BBQ lunch will be available when students return to Rocky Crossing (approx. 1pm).

Race Entries - Entries closed on Friday 8th September. Entry forms and money should have been handed in to the school office. Entry fees are $45 for an individual or $75 for a team, which includes hiring of the kayaks and bus fares to and from the event.

Kayak Training - Kayak paddlers will be completing their kayak training session with Barrington Outdoor Adventure Centre on Friday 15th September at a cost of approximately $45.00 per student. Permission notes, BOAC indemnity forms and training day details will be sent out in the week prior and will need to be returned fully completed before Friday 15th September in order to participate in this compulsory training..

Bike Check – All competitors will need to have their bike checked in Week 10 before Race Day, to ensure that the brakes and gears are fully functional. This will be done at school. Bikes should be left in the racks outside the TAS block with the students name clearly shown on the bike, and notify Mr Seale that it needs to be checked. Please be aware competitors should be using mountain bikes – no road/racing bikes will be considered eligible for the race.

Parent Helpers - This event is a unique and special day in the Gloucester High School calendar and has been well supported in the past. Any parents who would like to make themselves available to help out on the day please contact Mr Cameron 65581605.

See you at the start line.Mr Adam Cameron, Race Co-ordinator

CHESS COMPETITIONThe Gloucester High School Chess team, consisting of Jacob Bird, Jack Davis, Shayne Harris, Gabe Hennessy-O’Reilly and Ryan Pilmore should be proud of their effort and achievements in competing in this year’s Chess Competition. Jack Davis, Shayne Harris, Gabe Hennessy-O’Reilly and Ryan Pilmore competed in the final round of the chess competition on Wednesday the 30 August. The final match saw Gloucester High School compete against Merewether High School in Newcastle. All players displayed good sportsmanship and played diligently. Gloucester students played against some very talented students, and unfortunately have been knocked out of the main chess competition. We congratulate Merewether High School on their win.

The students will now be competing in the runners up competition and will be versing Scone High School in the next match.

BY PLACING LUNCH ORDERS THE AMOUNT OF WASTAGE WILL BE REDUCED, THEREFORE INCREASING PROFITS. The Canteen is run by the P & C who use these profits to puchase equipment etc for the school.

If there is something you would like to see on the menu that is healthy, please speak to Mandy at the Canteen or a P & C member.
