From the Director’s Chair Ed & Jeanette Carr, FL1-K Senior Chapter Directors

The District Rally That Finally Was

Just when things started to loosen up around here, then the rioters and demonstrators come along and, since they wanted

nothing to do with Social Distancing or face coverings, spread the COVID19 virus all over again. But things will get

back to normal soon and we can start socializing without the distance again. We are all in this together.

Ralph Lambert, Chapter Director of FL1-F2, Ocala’s version of the June 13th Mini Closing Ceremonies Event for

the March District Rally that was canceled. It was extremely limited attendance due to the restrictions on group

gathering sizes. Anyway – it went off smoothly. The location for this event was the FOP Lodge 108 in Seffner, FL. The

invited guests included the District Staff, each Chapter CD, and the POY (Person of the Year) and COY (Couple of the

Year) contestants. Since there are always people who cannot come to these events I asked if there were any extra slots --

could we bring a couple extra people. So, we were granted two additional attendees. Harold Brown who sold an

astounding number of tickets (3,600+) could not come – he is visiting family in Michigan at this time. So, cutting to the

chase – in attendance were George and Rose Cobb (Our COY), Rick Jenkins (Our POY), Amy Jenkins, myself, and

Marion Duncan. I knew before the event that we had won the contest for the “Chapter That Sold the Most Gold Wing

Tickets” so I asked for a few minutes to tell our story about our Gold Wing Ticket sales. We will call it the “Harold

Brown Story.” The District Director agreed and so we had a chance to praise Harold for his tremendous efforts. Super

Job Harold!! As a result - the 2020-2021 Raffle Tickets are “Ocala Orange!!” But, as usual, I am getting ahead of

myself. The event started with lunch – whatever else we do -- we always eat!! LOL. Over lunch we had a chance to chat

with everyone and enjoy the company of all those folks that we haven’t seen in forever. We shared a table with the

GWRRA Director’s Assistants Bob and Nan Shrader – long time GWRRA members and wonderful folks. It was

truly delightful to get to chat with them. The District Director had everyone introduce their attendees and Ocala was very

well represented. Next came awards – one for Rick and Pam Northrup for their many years of service as District Ride

Educators. They were also honored for their 52nd Wedding Anniversary. Congratulations to Rick and Pam!! Then the

District Director began making all the announcements that normally happen at the Rally Closing Ceremonies. This

included the winners of the competition for the District Couple of the Year and the winner of the District Person of the

Year. These winners will represent the District and be Ambassadors for GWRRA for the rest of this year. Unfortunately,

we did not win either of these competitions. The District Couple of the Year are Dominick and Diane DeSiato. I am

sure they will be superb representatives/ambassadors for our District.

Chapter FL1-K, in conjunction with Veterans Day, along, with all of you I hope, will be Celebrating All Military

Veterans November 7th, at Santa Maria del Mar Catholic Church in Flagler Beach from 10 to 2. Admission is $12.00

Which includes lunch, Games, Silent auction, 50/25/25 Drawing and a Grand Prize. And don’t forget the Florida

District Ride In to Cedar Key is on Sunday following our rally.

We hope you’re making plans to attend the 41st Annual Florida District Gathering of the Wings, March 18th,19th &

20th, 2021, at the Altamonte Springs Hilton. Shenanigans at the Florida District Rally. Information about Hotel and

Rally registration are on the District Website @ gwrraflorida.com.

We hope to see you at a GWRRA event in 2020,

Couple of the Year Bob & Loraine Ingenito

At the June Team meeting, Ed mentioned the new Florida District Couple of the Year – Dominick & Dianne

DeSiato.

Hey! Can we try for that?

Well, the answer was “yes” since we have been the FL1-K Couple of the Year since December.

As the Chapter C.O.Y., our only responsibility has been to continue participating and having fun. Rainie and

I have done that even working around my health problems and the Covid19 Virus. It’s been rough not being

able to ride since December but I’ve been able to do a lot of work on my bike. Stay tuned…..

Ed said to go forward we need to check out the Florida District web page. So, off we go to the computer.

Under the tab “ COY/POY” we found:

“Couple of the Year Manual” – only 39 pages long!!

“Couple of the Year Resume” – only 7 pages long. Better!

Guess Rainie and I have HOMEWORK!

BYE FOR NOW!

Jeanette Carr, Sr Membership Enhancement

THE POWER OF ATTITUDE

On the GWRRA web page, under the tab “Recent News”, one of the 5 listings is: Insite Newsletter –

Toolbox for Officers. You do not have to be an officer to check out this site each month. Give it a try!

In the June issue, Jere & Sherry Goodman, Director of GWRRA wrote about “The Power of Attitude”. A

picture of this title hangs on their office wall and an encryption reads:

“Our lives are not determined by what happens to us, but how we react to what happens; not by what life

brings to us, but by the attitude we bring to life. A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive

thoughts, events, and outcomes. It is a catalyst…a spark that creates extraordinary results.”

You can read all of the Goodman’s article on the web page but the idea is that despite all the problems to our

lives and GWRA events due to the virus, we can stay positive and look forward to future good time together.

GWRRA UNIVERSITY

Under the “Programs” tab on the main GWRRA web page you can find the GWRRA University. There are

many interesting seminars offered under “Training/Events”. An Online Class Calendar lists what is being

offered each month. The classes are being held by Zoom Call so you can see the instructor and participants.

One of our members, Richard Dake, recently took one of the classes. He said he enjoyed the course,

especially getting to interact with GW members from across the nation.

STUCK @ HOME? GIVE IT A TRY!

Ride Safe. Hug your Friends. Enjoy Life.

Truth Inside Of You

"Imagine you were born in 1900. On your 14th birthday, World War I starts, and ends on your 18th birthday. 22 million people perish in that war.

Later in the year, a Spanish Flu epidemic hits the planet and runs until your 20th birthday. 50 million people die from it in those two years. Yes, 50 million.

On your 29th birthday, the Great Depression begins. Unemployment hits 25%, the World GDP drops 27%. That runs until you are 33.

The country nearly collapses along with the world economy.

When you turn 39, World War II starts. You aren’t even over the hill yet. And don’t try to catch your breath. On your 41st birthday, the United States is fully pulled into WWII. Between your 39th and 45th birthday, 75 million people perish in the war.

At 50, the Korean War starts. 5 million perish.

At 55 the Vietnam War begins and doesn’t end for 20 years. 4 million people perish in that conflict.

On your 62nd birthday you have the Cuban Missile Crisis, a tipping point in the Cold War. Life on our planet, as we know it, should have ended. Great leaders prevented that from happening.

When you turn 75, the Vietnam War finally ends.

Think of everyone on the planet born in 1900. How do you survive all of that?

CPR, AED & First Aid Training

MFA National CPR & AED Awareness Week was June 1-7 2020. Covid19 has surely changed the way we socialize, greet & embrace each other. The week is to highlight the importance of knowing and using lifesaving skills. Each year, approximately 350.000 people experience out of hospital sudden cardiac arrest. Early intervention can double a person's chance for survival. In the next few months, I will present highlights of short duration for you to remember a skill which could make a difference.

COMPRESSION-ONLY CPR It is recommended that every person receive CPR, AED and First Aid training. But, anyone can learn compres-sion-only CPR. If you find a person unresponsive, call 911 and PUSH hard and FAST in the center of the chest until help ar-rives. Place both hands in the center of the chest between the nipples. Position your shoulders directly over your hands, keeping your arms straight and push hard straight down. I will conduct a class when the CDC and GWRRA feels it is safe. Meanwhile, please check your MFA card for the expiration date. Thank you.

When you were a kid in 1985 and didn’t think your 85 year old grandparent understood how hard school was. And how mean that kid in your class was. Yet they survived through everything listed above.

Perspective is an amazing art, refined as time goes on, and enlightening like you wouldn’t believe. Let’s try and keep things in perspective."

The Eyes Have It Now

We wear our face masks. Everywhere. Everywhere we will encounter other shoppers, business people, neigh-bors, walkers and bikers.

Why? you ask. Well, we are both in our 80s. We have come in contact with asbestos, insecticides, herbicides, heavy forest fire smoke, industrial zinc and aluminum particles, silica, petroleum products and in our not-so-smart youth, tobacco smoke. All these substances have left their mark on our lungs.

This is pretty much the same as our contemporaries and some of our younger friends.

When we lived in the North, obviously, we were outside in winter...a lot. And there we observed how far our breath plume extended. Five to eight feet! Now, here in the South, that plume cannot carry as far, maybe one half as far. On a six-foot walkway, passing walkers and bikers must share the space. Three feet for each!

So we wear our masks. N95s for stores, commercial thickness and home-made ones for biking.

Here is my intent in telling this story...we notice people's eyes so much more now. They are smiling! The little crinkles at the outer edges of their eyes is so rewarding! Those "crinkles" tell us "Thank you for protecting me!"

Those we meet in the isles or on the bike path are just as concerned about their health as we are. After all, we are our Brothers' and Sisters' keepers.

Ruth Sober

A burglar broke into a house one night. He shined his flashlight around, looking for valuables when a voice in the dark said, ‘Jesus knows you’re here.’ He nearly jumped out of his skin, clicked his flashlight off, and froze. When he heard nothing more, after a bit, he shook his head and continued. Just as he pulled the stereo out so he could disconnect the wires, clear as a bell he heard a voice....say, ‘Jesus is watching you.’ Freaked out, he shined his light around frantically, looking for the source of the voice. Finally, in the corner of the room, his flashlight beam came to rest on a parrot. ‘Did you say that?’ he hissed at the parrot. ‘Yep’, the parrot confessed, then squawked, ‘I’m just trying to warn you that he is watching you.’ The burglar relaxed. ‘Warn me, huh? Who in the world are you?’

‘I'm Moses.’ replied the bird. ‘Moses?’ the burglar laughed. ‘What kind of people would name a bird Moses?’

‘The same kind of people that would name their Rottweiler Jesus.’

Random Thoughts from the Clearwater Chapter Ride Coordinator

The lack of rides and Chapter activities has led only to spare time; ergo, time to think. Uh Oh! Anyone who

knows me understands that my mind works like a Merry-Go-Round. The wheels are turning without really go-

ing anywhere.

First off, if the ride is all about the journey and not the destination, is it still a journey if you have no destina-

tion? Several of us put that theory to the test. Everyone understood, or should have understood, that in the

midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, there were no restaurants open for business. Thus, going out for a ride was

sort of an exercise in futility. For the record, when it comes to going nowhere fast, I am the man! The most

clueless leading the aimless riding to nowhere. So, in the final analysis, was it a success? Who knows?

In a selfless act, I, your Chapter Ride Coordinator, have decided not to accept any pay for the past two

months. It seems fair to refuse compensation since Chapter activities were pretty much shut down. That means

the zero dollars normally spent for my services, will be saved and can go back to the Chapter and thus we

break even. I know the math is complicated but if you need further clarification, our Chapter Treasurer can

explain it. I’m not a numbers guy.

In probably the cruelest irony of the whole pandemic, gas prices are the lowest that they have been in a dec-

ade. (Someone fact check that, it might be more, might be less. Let us leave it that they were low.) So while

we could afford to go out and ride and ride, we couldn’t ride because we were to socially distance from each

other. And again, there was no restaurant or attraction to ride to. But take heart all—when we can get back to

our normal schedules, the new normal will include gas prices that will be higher than we’ve ever seen them.

It’s a win-win!

Finally, in protest for the closing of barber shops and in solidarity with my testosterone laden brothers, I have

chosen to stop shaving and “cutting” my hair. I may not be recognized. If you see me at meetings or rides, you

may believe that I am a new member. I’m the same me, only a little fuzzier. As always, I will be ready to ride

among you all. AND look forward to doing so. I missed everyone and it’ll be fun to be around you again. See

You Soon!!!!! Ride Safe, Ride Aware!
