What is the Tour de France?

The Tour de France is the third largest sporting event in the world, established in 1903. Set over three weeks and covering 3,500 km. Twelve million spectators of all ages line the route to watch the famed publicity caravan and to support the cyclists. 2,000 journalists and photographers cover the Tour de France and it is broadcast to 190 countries by 85 TV channels ensuring a worldwide audience of three billion.

How Many Teams Compete?Twenty-two teams participate in the race all named after their sponsors, and each team is made up of nine cyclists, meaning 198 riders Rules mandate that each team member be dressed identically: the only exception being the leader jerseys. The British team to watch is Team Sky, headed by hot favourite Chris Froome who won the Tour in 2013. What is the Yellow Jersey? Most people know that the overall leader – that is, the

What is the Tour de France?rider with the lowest cumulative time, wears the yellow jersey. But there are other competitions within the race. The leader in sprint points wears a green jersey. Sprint points are gained on within stages and also on finishing the flatter sprint stages. Mark Cavendish is Britain big sprint winner. Watch out for him on first stage ending in Harrogate. The “King of the Mountains” wears a white jersey with red polka dots’ determined by a point system based on performance on mountain climbs. In Stage two in Calderdale, Ripponden Bank and the climb at Blackley are King of the Mountain point markers. The first riders over these climbs will gain KOM

points. Look out for the large inflatable KOM gates over the course. The rider under age 26 who has the lowest cumulative time wears a white jersey. There are two other “minor” competitive classifications that don’t get you a jersey, but a different coloured number to pin to your jersey. First is the

most combative rider of the day; the following day, he wears a number printed white on red, instead of the usual black on white. Also the team classification goes to the team with the lowest cumulative time among their three best riders. The next days, that team would wear numbers printed black on yellow.

What is the Caravan? The Caravan is a terrific spectacle and a great family attraction. A procession of 180 elaborate floats and vehicles precedes the racing action. The caravan sets off two hours before the start of the race and takes 40 minutes to pass. Publicity material including caps, badges, plastic bags are thrown to the crowds as the caravan passes by as a great way to catch yourself a souvenir of Le Tour. Watch out for grown men wrestling to capture a worthless piece of plastic tat, sorry souvenir at the roadside as the Caravan passes.

What is the Tour de France? Why is the Tour de France coming to Leeds and Yorkshire? It is quite normal for the Tour de France to dip into neighbouring countries. In fact, the 2013 edition – the 100th event – is unusual in that it stayed completely in France. The last time the Tour came to Britain was in 2007. Next year the Tour starts in Utrecht in Holland.

Vonderbrand Top TipsLe Tour…1. Be there! It’s gonna be great.

2. Spread the love. Attend every street party that’ll have you. Local watering holes, too.

3. Wear your sticker. On your T-shirt, hat, shorts or even your face and be in with a chance to win a shiny new bike, courtesy of Vonderbrand and Halfords!

4. Memento. Le Tour de France is the world’s most iconic bike race. And, for one time only, it passes right by our doorstep. Save this edition of Go Local and say to your grandkids “I was there!”

5. On Yer Bike. When it’s all over, get buns of steel by scaling Ripponden Bank on two wheels tout comme Le Tour.

Many people over the age of 40 experienced their first foreign travel courtesy of a package holiday. I am not one of them; when I was 5 my eccentric father decided to set off for the South of France in a battered Vauxhall Victor with six kids and a small caravan on the back. However, when I was 15 my parents took me on a package holiday to a low rent hotel in Benidorm. Can you imagine doing that these days? My dad would be booted out of the golf club while my mum would be shown the door at the Women’s Institute. Somehow, over the years, package holidays have become decidedly naff.

Instead, you hire a villa in some upmarket resort, book flights separately and hire a car at the airport. Maybe you take a driving holiday where you stay in different places and perhaps booked the hotels on three different websites. It’s a do it yourself holiday. Let’s face it, even staying in a tent at Eurocamp is cooler than going on a package holiday. How has this come to be?

I have a theory about this. It is all the fault of the holiday reps. Do you remember holiday reps? They were fleshy blonde women from Basildon or Rochdale; they met you at Alicante airport at two in the morning and shepherded you onto a coach. At the hotel, they would fuss around at reception and secure your key because, let’s face it, you couldn’t possibly do this for yourself.

Then, the next morning would come their pièce de résistance, the introductory meeting. You have to remember that back in their 1970s abroad was a strange and alien place and the rep had to explain to us how everything worked. We needed to understand where the hotel restaurant was and what times meals were served, because we wouldn’t be able to elicit this information by asking reception. We couldn’t conceive of the notion that foreigners drive on the wrong side of the road and therefore you need to look the other way. It was essential we know that some of the restaurants were expensive because there was no way we would think to look at the menu before we went in and asked for a table. And, of course, how were we supposed to know that it wasn’t safe to drink the water. Finally, they would get around to the real reason for the exercise

Opinion - Why it’s okay to take a package holiday

which was flogging us overpriced excursions to places we didn’t really want to go.

Nowadays, we are all cosmopolitan jetsetters and we are more than capable of arranging things for ourselves. Before we even go near a travel agent we visit wikitravel or lonely planet and read up on our destination of choice. We know about the best way to get there, what sights to see and how much we should expect to pay for a meal in a midrange restaurant long before we even think about booking. In short, we do not need a holiday rep.

As it happens, I have booked a package holiday this summer, mainly because I fancy staying in a place where someone else cooks breakfast and makes our beds each morning. I knew where I wanted to go so I started by looking at the Thomas Cook website but what I found was that the holidays were surprisingly expensive and, even though I was booking in February, there were precious few places available. On the plus side, I did manage to find a few hotels that looked promising. I devoted an hour to surfing a few travel comparison sites and eventually booked the dates we wanted at the hotel we liked with conveniently timed flights from our local airport, all at a saving of £1,200 on the price quoted for a proper package holiday. The only difference was we have to get a cab from the airport (20 euros) and we don’t get a holiday rep – what a shame! Hooray, the internet has made package holidays cool again.Howard Clemmow

This is one of the most popular cakes at my restaurant. We serve individual cakes but this can be made as a tiered cake or a flat tray bake. It is very versatile and we also make a version replacing the carrot with grated courgette – a real winner!

Ingredients: 200g Light brown soft sugar 1 mashed banana 220ml Vegetable Oil 80g honey 160g Grated carrot 1 tsp 5 spice powder 360g SR flour 4 Eggs 2 tsp Baking powder

Frosting 150g Full fat cream cheese 50g Butter 300g Icing sugar

Method: The joy of this recipe is that it is an all in one cake.

Mash the banana well and mix with the sugar, then add the wet ingredients and mix thoroughly with a

whisk; it is best to mix the wet ingredients first and then add the flour, 5 spice, salt and baking powder afterwards. Pour into your chosen baking tray or cake tin and bake for about 20-25 minutes at 170°C. Remove from the oven and rest for 10 minutes then remove from the tin and cool on a wire rack.

For the icing, place the softened butter and cream cheese in a bowl and add the icing sugar a little at a time. Mix thoroughly until smooth and holding a

peak; if a little wet, add more icing sugar to get the desired consistency. Spread over or layer up the cake and icing when it is cool.

Tucked away in the attic above VG Estate Agents is a beauty room, a place of peace, tranquillity and relaxing beauty treatments….Bridget Akroyd already has a well-deserved reputation locally as an established and highly regarded beauty therapist. Up until last year Bridget had worked for 9 years in another Beauty Salon in the centre of Ripponden but when the business suddenly closed Bridget decided to embrace the situation and set up on her own. “I cannot thank my loyal clients enough, over the years many of them have become friends and it’s a privilege to be able to continue to offer them treatments and make them feel good about themselves”, Bridget also went on to say “None of this would have been possible, had it not been for Virginia and I would like to personally thank her for giving me the opportunity to set up business here”Having qualified in 1984, Bridget has a wealth of the experience with her main passion being massage and the holistic approach. Having first-hand experience I can confidently say the back, neck, face and scalp massage was one of the best I have ever experienced. It was a wonderfully relaxing treatment and if, like me, you sit at a desk for your

job, it’s forty five blissful minutes where you can feel the tension ease from your shoulders. For £22.50 it’s worth every penny! The organic facials use Neal’s Yard Skincare products, a range carefully chosen by Bridget for its natural chemical free formulas. Bridget went on to say “Neal’s Yard lends itself perfectly to the environment I am aiming to create, my clients come here to unwind and relax from the stress of modern day living.”Other treatments offered include, Opi manicure & pedicures, waxing, Fake Bake tanning and Shellac nails. So whether you’re preparing for a summer holiday or just want a little time for yourself, why not call Bridget on 07903 343639 and prepare to relax…

Our kids are spending increasing periods of time keeping up with the world of technology whether it is the computer or watching TV. For busy parents it can be a life saver but how much is too much.

A survey by Child Wise of British children suggests that children watch more than two and a half hours of TV a day plus two hours online or playing computer games. This amounts to 2,000 hours per year – more than twice the number of hours they spend in school and considerably more than they spend with their family.

There are an ever more dynamic viewing experiences being developed for us and our children to enjoy. Recent developments in 3D TV and 3D cinema with this technology now being brought to computer games consoles. Nintendo have issued a health warning that advises against using 3D effort for children under 6 years old.

This concern is not exclusive to the games consoles as watching 3D images at the

cinema or on a 3D television could

give rise to the same concerns.

Children’s eyesight is developing

rapidly from birth, reaching natural emmetropisation at around the age of six to seven, although children’s eye sight remains flexible beyond this. Shameem Mohammed, consultant Optometrist at i-Care Opticians recommends that children under the age of six avoid the use of 3D technology.

Children need a clear, sharp image in each eye in order for their vision to develop properly. When something affects that balance whether natural or artificial, it could affect their visual development.

Good eyesight is crucial for a child’s development at school and also socially. Many eye conditions donot display any symptoms so children are oftenunaware that their vision is not perfect.

90% of children visit a dentist regularly yet only 50% of children have ever had an eye examination.Children’s eye examinations are funded by the NHS, and they are entitled to have their eyes tested by an Optometrist every 12 months. i-Care Opticians are happy to examine children from the age of 5.

i-Care Opticians in Halifax are providing FREE eye examinations for all NHS customers.

Children who need glasses are also offered upgrades to designer glasses for FREE, so now kids can have more style from their eyewear.

There are up to 1 million children in the UK who currently have an undetected vision problem. i-Care Opticians offers help and advice on your child’s eyecare.

Summer is here at last and most of us are looking forward to holidaying in the sun over the coming weeks. It’s getting warmer and we’re discarding our winter clothes in favour of more seasonal attire. The problem is that our clothes help to disguise what we look like underneath and the summer months mean we need to bare a lot more flesh, so this is one of the most popular times of year for thinking about shedding a few pounds and sprucing up our appearance.

On the face of it losing weight is very simple – you burn off or eat fewer calories than you need each day and you’ll start getting thinner and in an ideal world this is how it works.

However it isn’t always as easy as this, here are some of the reasons why you might struggle to lose weight and how you can beat it to get yourself in to your perfect summer shape in time for the holidays.

#1 You’re not consistentAs all things in life, you’ll get the most out if you put more in. So a haphazard approach to losing weight will only give you average to poor results. Commit yourself to see quick and noticeable changes.

#2 You don’t have a planAnything great that has ever been accomplished has been planned in advance. The more time you put in to planning what you do, then the better chances of success you’ll have. Plan how much weight you want to lose, plan how you’ll do it, plan around any roadblocks might come across and write it all down.

#3 Take actionAnyone who is in good shape has to work at it, no matter what you might think! There are very few ‘lucky ones.’ It might be a case of avoiding certain foods, being active whenever possible or having hobbies that burn off extra calories, everything like this increases your chances of success.

#4 Don’t do what you’ve always doneIf you have a system that works for you each time you try it then ignore that last statement, but if on the other hand you always struggle to lose weight, just get back to basics – exercise more and reduce the amount of calories you eat and drink – see how that works out!

#5 Don’t follow bad adviceOk you want to look good for summer, so you want a quick fix, but fad diets are not a long term solution. If anything seems too good to be true, it usually is, so stick to a good sound eating and exercise plan instead.

We don’t always find it as easy as it should be to lose weight and very rarely there may be a medical reason why it’s difficult to do so. But all too often it’s simply because you need to raise your game and put a little more effort in. Remember everything worth having in life is worth working for.

For two experienced hairdressers/ beauticians, this month is going to be a busy and exciting time as they move from their existing salon, Hair 19 in Halifax to join the team at Bombshell Beauties in Salterhebble.

Mother and daughter, Liz and Harriet Redmond, have gained excellent reputations at Hair 19 and over the years have developed a loyal client base.

But after more than 3 successful years, Liz has decided she would like to gain a better work/life balance as running her own business has impacted on the amount of time she has to spend with her husband Trevor and close family.

Liz loves to travel and without the pressures of owning her own business is looking forward to being able to relax, take more holidays and enjoy precious time with her grandson Isaac.

I recently had the opportunity to meet with Liz and Harriet at their new location. Liz explained “The salon has a warm and friendly atmosphere, which is very important to us as our clients want to feel relaxed when they have their treatments.” Liz also went on to say, “Another key factor in our decision to join the team here was the salon’s superb roadside location and the free parking is a bonus for everyone.”

Bombshell Beauties is owned by Natasha Robertson and Katy Ainley. The salon consists of hairdressers with separate beauty room on the ground floor and a tanning room upstairs. Products used include Sienna X tanning, Cloud Nine, Neal & Wolf and from July Milkshake Hair Care.

Liz and Harriet look forward to welcoming clients old and new to their new premises, to make an appointment call 01422 810820 or 07734 901304.

Getting your body back into shape after having a baby is no laughing matter.

Many mums spend hours sweating in the gym or hire a personal trainer but often find they are still left with a less than taut tummy.

Becky Barraclough is a perfect example. Since having her first child, Ruudy 26-months ago the award-winning beauty therapist’s super-toned stomach has disappeared and been replaced with the `mummy tummy’.

Now the 30-year-old is to follow the lead of Coleen Rooney, who had a bit of a helping hand to get her figure back to peak condition after the birth of her son in May. The Liverpudlian wife of Wayne Rooney turned to 3D lipo – a non-surgical non-in-vasive treatment that not only claims to melt fat away, but with sound waves and mechanical rollers also tightens skin and reduces cellulite.

The machine, and others like it, are changing the world of weight loss today. The 3D system heats skin up to 41 degrees and melts the fat, which is excreted through the liver. The process continues to work for up to three months with up to 40- per-cent permanent fat loss. There is no pain and no downtime.

Little surprise that other celebrities, such as Alex Gerrard and Amy Childs are fans of the treatment too, and Apprentice winner 2013, Dr Leah Totton is doing a roaring trade with the machine in her London clinic.

Putting the Yummy back into Mummy

Becky owns one of Calderdale’s busiest beauty salons, Saks Beauty in Halifax town centre. She opened 10 years ago in the former Saks hairdressersand in 2011 made history when she opened the first stand-alone Saks beauty salon in the country. She has over 3,000 regular customers

and many of them are young mums who like her, are keen to get their pre-baby body back.

She listened to their concerns and took action. She’s added a two-room extension and brought in the 3D lipo machine, which Saks have been testing around the country for the past six months. “Saks has done its research and so have I. As far as I am concerned this is the best machine of its kind on the market and the demand for it is unbelievable. We are already packed out with consultations and treatments,” says Becky.

She believes the beauty of 3D lipo is that it offers a three dimensional alternative to liposuction, with technologies targeting fat

removal, cellulite reduction and skin tightening for face and body. “While lots of our clients want rid of the mummy tummy and will use the fat freezing programme, other women have different concerns about their bodies and will need other programmes such as contouring or cellulite treatment. This machine does it all. “

All five therapists have been trained to use the machine including the latest new member, Katie Gledhill. Prices start from £100 for contouring and cellulite and £250 for fat freezing, but Becky has several offers on at the moment, and says anyone who wants more details should contact her or one of her staff.

Here is a vision of the home of the future. The house’s occupants are beavering away in their high powered jobs and it is a warm and sunny day. The window blinds automatically lower themselves to keep the interior cool. The master of the house leaves the office and he uses an app on his phone. The house cranks up the air conditioning in the living area to bring down the temperature to a comfortable 220C. As he turns into his road, he uses the app again. The electric gates open, the alarm is disabled and 30 seconds later the front door unlocks itself.

The man wanders into the kitchen and fixes himself a well-earned G&T. He goes into the lounge and says, “TV, Channel 4.” A mirror on the wall slides aside to reveal the television which is already switched on to the Channel 4 news. Meanwhile, his wife arrives and uses her own app. The kettle switches itself on, because she likes to have a cup of herbal tea when she gets home. That night as they are watching a film, an intruder breaks into the back garden. The doors and windows lock them-selves automatically and the alarm primes itself to go off if someone enters the house. A CCTV image of the back garden replaces the film on the home cinema and all the TV screens in the house, while an email is automatically sent to the security company who dispatch a patrol.

Except, this is not the home of the future, it is a townhouse in an upmarket enclave of Manchester. There is a catch, however; the owner paid over £100,000 to automate his home. All of the equipment I described is readily available at an increasingly affordable price; for instance, a kettle that you switch on remotely using an app can be yours for less than £100. Where the big money was spent was on integrating everything together which involved installing a central server and coding bespoke software, not to mention creating a customised app. Then, of course, there were kilometres of cable to be routed and cameras,

TechnologySmart Homes – the future today?

servos, sensors and much more to be put in place. The good news is that you don’t need to spend a fortune to introduce some smart technology into your home. Take central heating for instance; it is much more economical to be able to turn your heating on half an hour before you get home than have it on a fixed timer. Smart thermostats such as Nest go one better and actually learn your lifestyle patterns. Burglar alarms can be set and cancelled in

the same way via a phone app; no need to worry about whether you set the alarm before going on holiday anymore and you can upgrade your existing panel at minimal cost. Smoke and fire alarms can automatically notify someone if they are activated while you are out of the property and electric appliances ranging from ovens to coffee percolators can be operated remotely via your phone or computer.

The challenge for tech savvy homeowners will be integrating

all the different devices. Nobody wants ten different apps on their phone; they’ll be turning on the TV instead of the kettle or opening the garage door instead of turning up the heating. Obviously, it is not going to be cost effective to pay a specialist to devise a bespoke system as described above, but there are several ways it could happen. One manu-facturer could make lots of different devices with a common control system, but then buyers wouldn’t be able to pick and choose between devices, not ideal. Much better would be a common control app that works on any platform and the device manufacturers could make their equipment compatible with the app. This has already happened with the DLNA collaboration that allows a Samsung laptop to integrate with a Sony TV. Most tellingly, Google, the king of All Things Internet, has recently bought Nest Controls. The future is just around the corner.

GARDENING DANGEROUSLY!

Cont. P86

We are SO lucky in this country: as many Tescos as we could ever possibly wish for, Jeremy Clarkson, the NHS and, of course, our enduring gardening heritage to name but a few. This tranquil national pastime provides a delightful solace for millions of folk, fuelled by a healthy population of garden centres (don’t tell Tesco!) and the stirring efforts of our very own Head Gardener, Monty Don. Unfortunately, though, it’s all a bit grey-centric at the moment and the government and professional gardening bodies, including the RHS, are trying desperately to get more kids involved to inspire them to become gardeners instead of computer games programmers. And that’s the tricky bit…!

I’ve tried in vain more times than I can count to generate a spark of gardening interest in my two nine year old boys but, because it doesn’t involve kicking balls, riding bikes or playing computer games, they simply assume their father is slightly bonkers and will eventually get fed up of trying! Maybe if our gardens weren’t such benign and safe places with no spear wielding natives, tigers or ‘wee tremulous beasties’ to fight off (imagined or otherwise!) then perhaps

we could generate a smidgen of interest without the constant cajoling? At the moment the very worst that could happen to them while indulging in a spot of gardening is an unfortunate encounter with Carole Klein in the shrubbery…

Bazooka Falls (trademarked!)

and whilst, granted, this could be a frightening experience, it is (apparently) nothing compared to being chased by the living dead on an X Box. Even snail throwing and hunting for Lily Beetles holds no sway – their craving for electronic stimulation of the dangerous kind just keeps on getting in the way and cannot be competed with.

Winston Churchill once said that war and gardening were the normal occupations of man – one part being the predilection of mankind to endlessly wage war and the other as a peaceful antidote to all the carnage this creates. Having been involved in both, I am inclined to agree with him – although clearly dear old Winnie could not have anticipated the impact of the X Box (other computer gaming consoles are also available I believe..!) on the world as he knew it. Personally, I have always found that both are compatible given a fertile imagination; being in the military never stopped me gardening whenever the opportunity arose. Take my improvised water feature (Bazooka Falls as it was christened!) as a prime example. Concocted from an

ex-Argentinian bazooka I requisitioned during the Falkland’s War, it actually served a useful purpose diverting water from my trench, but, if I’d had some goldfish and a couple of water lilies, it might have taken first prize at Chelsea! Luckily the Argentinians never came asking for it back and, hopefully, it is still peacefully spouting water to this day!

It goes without saying that if we could turn all guns into ploughshares and bazookas into water features, then the world would be a far better place. It might also help save some of the kids hooked on the cyber world and encourage them to get out and be creative in the garden – although it’s debatable whether decommissioned bazookas would ever really catch on! Maybe the RHS should have a word with the MOD, as I have it on good authority that helmets make wonder-fully eccentric garden planters and that no gardener should be without their ‘string, green’ – it’s, without doubt, the finest gardening twine ever made!

We are constantly watching the weather forecast especially when the alpaca shearer rings and says he will be with us in a couple of days’ time. This wouldn’t have been a problem but the weekend before we were at Bramham Horse Trials with our alpaca goods trade stand. We packed up at Bramham in record time and raced the storm clouds home to get all the alpacas inside to stay dry. The alpacas have to be dry for shearing. Luckily, with the shake of a feed bucket all our alpacas came racing inside, girls in one barn and boys in the other. The stud males were the last off the hillside and were a little damp but not soaked when the heavens opened.

All the alpacas behaved impeccably during shearing including Elle, Wobey, Odin and Zeus who were being sheared for the first time as they are now one year old. Have a look at our before and after pictures. There are more on our Facebook page. – County Alpacas

This time of year we would usually be expecting the arrival of new cria but instead we decided to increase the herd by bringing in “new blood”. He is a brilliant white male, very handsome and has stunning fleece, at one year old it will be a couple of years before we can put him to work. He will be arriving in the next couple of weeks.

Alfie and Torchy are now nearly full grown and big enough to be moved in with our stud males without causing any problems and bullying. They have all settled in well together and as alpacas have a strong herd instinct, it is, the more the merrier.

Our product range is now expanding and our bed socks and duvets are selling fast. The bed socks ensure the warmest feet whilst snoozing. The demand for the duvets means that we are always having to buy in fleece to fill the Egyptian Cotton covers. Each one is individually handmade and a delight to sleep under. You can check them all out on our web site at www.CountyAlpacas.co.uk.

April was found abandoned outside the Animal Centre on April Fools’ Day. She is a lovely natured dog and popular with our staff. April is very typical of her breed, walks very nicely and enjoys playing with toys and will retrieve a ball.We do not have any past history so would not re-home her with very young children although she has been very friendly with everyone at the Centre. April is also house trained.

The Tour de France is nearly upon us and no doubt many residents are making various plans to celebrate the Tour de France passing through the area. There will be many visitors to Calderdale and this will no doubt mean that some criminals will be coming to the area as well, to take what does not belong to them. If you have arranged to go away for the weekend or for a holiday, please make sure that you leave your house locked and secure and any keys or valuables hidden from sight. If you can, ask a neighbour to keep a watch on your home. If you are stopping at home, please make sure that you do not leave the front door open whilst you are in the garden, or leave a window open whilst you “pop to the neighbours”. That may just leave enough time for someone to sneak into your home.

Gentlemen, if you are in the pub or standing and waving to the passing parade, please do not leave your wallet in your back pocket, it takes very little for light hands to remove your hard earned cash and credit or bank cards. Ladies, please keep an eye on your handbag, zip it up or shut it and keep it over your shoulder if you can. If you are in a pub or restaurant, do not hang your handbag on a hook or the back of a chair. When out celebrating (if you can get anywhere!) be on your guard with your possessions, even when you are on that second glass of wine or pint of beer. Do not forget, DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE, when the roads re-open to vehicles.

Pedal cycles – many of us have a pedal cycle and the Tour de France may have inspired some of us to get pedalling. Do make sure the bike is in road worthy condition. Check the brakes and make sure that they work (going downhill without brakes is not a good idea). Look after your pedal cycle,

Your local police update for the Summerwhen at home lock it away. When you are out and about and stop to go for a well-earned drink, make sure you secure your pedal cycle well. Do not let

someone else come along and take your property. WEAR A CYCLE HELMET. There are two ways of coming off a bike, wearing a helmet and not wearing a helmet. Not wearing the helmet will probably land you in hospital or worst case – kill you due to the head injury. Wearing a helmet means that you will most likely get up, rub

yourself down, get back on your bike and carry on the journey. A reasonable cycle helmet is not

expensive and may well end up being the best money you have spent. Wearing a helmet applies to children as much as adults. It is not “cool” not wearing a helmet, it is madness.

The next Ward Forum is at Sowerby Community Centre on Tuesday 15th July at 6.45pm.

Enjoy the Tour de France and have a safe weekend, even if you happen to be working…. Regards Fiona PC5285 Igo and George PCSO403 Serban

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Andy Routledge feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Ripponden, Rishworth, Barkisland, Norland, Sowerby, Mill Bank, Soyland & Sowerby Bridge areas & Andy is finding that his

approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve

done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Andy a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Ancient Benchmarks like thisare to be found on structuresthroughout the Ryburn Valley The term benchmark, originatesfrom the marks chiselled intostone structures, into which anangle-iron could be placed to

form a "bench" for a levelling rod, thus ensuring itcould be accurately repositioned to calculate theheight above sea level relevant to other nearbybenchmarked datum lines. `The benchmark’ is also a professionally accepted

term for determining or measuring the quality ofstandards and performance.

Even though technology has overtaken levelling rods, new benchmarks are still appearing on buildings inour area, as a trademark of the quality standards of alocal buildingcompany.

“Our standards arehigh and ourcustomers arepleased for us tocarve our owndiscrete benchmark on completion of our newstonework, so look out for more of them appearing”says Robert Gear of Ryburn’s Benchmark Builders.

Benchmarking in the Ryburn Valley

What our customers say... “We employed RJD, now Benchmark Builders to completean extension to our property and were delighted with their work.

They were hardworking, industrious and extremely conscientious, their timekeeping exemplary andtheir honesty such that we gave them full access to our home whilst we were absent.

Their standard of work is of the highest quality and we would be happy for any prospective clientsto come to our property to view the work for themselves.” Barry and Ann Birkby Huddersfield
