Gothenburg is home to two Pony Express Stations. The Midway Station, on its original
ranch site south of Gothenburg, is open to the public upon request during the summer. The Sam Machette Station, located in Ehmen Park at 15th and Lake Avenue, was originally erected in 1854 on the Oregon Trail west of Gothenburg near Fort McPherson. It was used as a fur trading post and ranch house. From 1860-1861 the station was used as a Pony Express Station. The building was
moved from its original site and rebuilt in the park in 1931 to preserve it for future generations to enjoy. The Pony Express Station & Museum opened to the public in 1954 and continues to welcome visitors from April to October. A guide tells the story of the brave riders who carried mail 2,000 miles between St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California, from April 1860 to October 1861. In August 1992, the Nebraska Legislature designated Gothenburg as the Pony Express Capital of Nebraska.

Being located along Interstate 80, U.S. Highway 30 and the Union Pacific Railroad all make Gothenburg an ideal
area for future growth and development. Although agriculture is still the economic mainstay for the area, industrial growth has continued through the recruiting of Fortune 500 companies such as Parker-Hannifin, Bayer and Frito-Lay/PepsiCo. Those big names are flanked by home-grown companies like Nebraska Salt & Grain, Country Partners Cooperative and Gothenburg Health. Together, our businesses create more than 500 jobs.
Gothenburg has a steady population at just over 3,500 residents. It is a
charming city with tree-lined streets, lovely homes, manicured lawns, specialty shops, green parks, exercise trails and a quality of life desired by many. Opportunities for businesses, families, adults, children and the elderly are abundant, providing a perfect home for those who dream of the benefits of living, working and playing in a small town. The people of Gothenburg honor their legacy with a strong work ethic and a collective pride in improving and maintaining public and private property. We also have a noticeable ambition to provide new and innovative economic opportunities for existing residents or newcomers.
People in Gothenburg enjoy all the benefits a small town has to offer. That includes a variety of sports and outdoor
and leisure activities. Local parks are popular for family gatherings and community festivals. History buffs can find a wealth of information at the Pony Express Station & Museum and the Gothenburg Historical Museum. Historic homes grace the streetscape offering a picture of various architectural styles.
Recreation opportunities abound. Whether its golf, baseball, swimming, hunting or fishing, you can find it in
Gothenburg. Amateur or pro, you can golf at our nationally ranked 18-hole public course Wild Horse Golf Club. Cowboy hats and boots are also a regular sight at the top-notch rodeo grounds. Park your horse, your car or your RV. Stay for a day, a week or for as long as you like. Our door is always open and the welcome sign is out.

FOUNDING FATHERS: Olof Bergstrom, right, poses with Vollrad Carlson in 1883, decked out with shotguns and cartridge belts. Bergstrom is recognized as the founding father of Gothenburg while Carlson is said to be Gothenburg’s first doctor.
In the latter part of 1882, Olof Bergstrom, a worker with the Union Pacific Railroad,
conceived the idea that a town was needed where Gothenburg now stands. The town is situated in the wonderful Platte River Valley, which is probably the greatest agricultural valley in the world. Bergstrom chose farm ground north of the town site and traveled back to Sweden to convince his fellow countrymen to migrate to the United States — to Nebraska — to build a new town in the West. He was persuasive and by July 8, 1885, Gothenburg was incorporated as a town with a population of 300. Swedes and Germans settled the area, as is evidenced by the name Gothenburg. The town was named after Goteborg, Sweden, but was given a German spelling by railroad officials.
The digging of a 12-mile canal off the Platte River and construction of the first man-made lake designed to generate
electricity encouraged several industries and factories to locate here. Companies included shirt and overall factories, brick kilns, bathtub and ironworks factories, flour mills, vinegar and pickle works, a cigar manufacturer and a barbed wire factory. Boom days came early in the 1890s. In the money panic of 1893, the boom quickly turned to bust. Still, the canal provided the first irrigation system for about
17,000 acres east of the lake, and agriculture quickly settled in as the main industry for the growing community. The man-made lake spurred industrial, community and agricultural growth, a hallmark of Gothenburg’s success throughout its history. Most Gothenburg residents had electricity by 1892, the first in western Nebraska.
Community volunteers cleared land, planted trees and erected buildings to develop a park area adjacent to the
lake in the early 1900s, calling it Lafayette Park. With the help of many organizations and residents, the lake and park represent the ingenuity and tenacity of our city’s volunteers.
9
Lake Helen’s impact on Gothenburg’s early industrial history and on its agricultural and recreational
development over more than a century ago helped Gothenburg earn the Nebraska Community Improvement Program’s Community of the Century in 2000, and Lake Helen received the acclaim of Project of the Century that same year. Lake Helen recently got another face lift that included draining, dredging and an all-out overhaul. Officials continue a process to improve the area.
Gothenburg’s founder literally led Swedish immigrants to his proposed town site and asked them to make his vision a reality. Many families in the community today can point to a specific person in the family tree who provided leadership to Gothenburg during its development over the years. A former mayor once stated, “We don’t do things for personal gain, we do things so that the community gains.” We continue to have a vision for our future to make Gothenburg a place where people want to live, work and play.
TOWN’S FOUNDATION: The section of railroad through
Gothenburg was inspected and accepted by UP in November
1866. The town was platted by UP surveyors in 1882.
MAIN STREET: The main north-south street and business district of Gothenburg was first called Winchell Street, named after one of the first families to settle here. It was renamed Lake Avenue in 1920.

There is a little something for everyone who either puts down roots in Gothenburg or is looking to pass a little time while traveling
through. Just because we’re a small town doesn’t mean “there’s nothing to do here.” Those with an active lifestyle can enjoy a variety of sports and outdoor leisure activities as recreation opportunities abound. Whether its a pick-up game of basketball at the YMCA, a round of disc golf in the park or an adventure tracking big game in the south hills, we’ve got you covered. White-tailed deer, mule deer and elk can be found throughout the valley, along with pheasants, wild turkeys, doves, quail, ducks and geese. Water sports are also popular with tubing and canoeing on the Platte River. On Jeffrey, Midway and Johnson Lakes — each only 20 minutes from Gothenburg — sailing, power boating, water skiing and fishing can fill summer days with fun. And don’t forget golf. Amateur or pro, you can play at Wild Horse Golf Club, our nationally ranked 18-hole public course. History buffs can take a peek into Gothenburg’s past with the Pony Express Station across the street from our Gothenburg Historical Museum. Whether you’re here for an afternoon or plan to spend the rest of your life, there’s plenty to occupy your spare time.
Lake Helen was created in the early 1890s when a 12-mile canal was dug to allow water from the Platte River to fill a dammed canyon
and create a reservoir. Originally, the lake supported an electricity plant that brought industry to the area. Now it provides a scenic recreation area excellent for fishing and it features a 2.5-mile exercise trail. City officials continue to work toward upgraded facilities at the lake.
The Pony Express Station & Museum in Ehmen Park opened to visitors in 1954 and continues to welcome travelers from April
through October. A guide is on staff to tell the story of the riders who carried the mail 2,000 miles between St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California, from May 1860 to October 1861.

Across the street from the Pony Express Station, the Gothenburg Historical Museum offers interesting displays of the
the country’s expansion westward as German and Swedish settlers brought their businesses and families to live in a new fledgling community. The museum is open May through September.
Opened in 1999, Wild Horse Golf Club is a links course bordered by thick native
grasses. The fairways are wide, but lots of sand traps help increase your handicap. Each year, the course receives high acclaim from golf reviewers and enthusiasts from around the world.
For over a century, the three markers in the Swedish Crosses Cemetery have stood
as a lasting symbol of Gothenburg’s Swedish heritage. These artistic grave markers, wrought in Swedish steel by a loving grandfather, denote the graves of three children on a prairie homestead that is now part of pioneer history.
The Sun Theatre in Gothenburg was built and used as an opera house from 1909 until 1926. The Community Playhouse, a nonprofit
organization formed in 1968, purchased the Sun Theatre in 1983 following a successful fund drive to “Save the Sun.” Since then, the theatre has offered both live productions and cinema entertainment. And one of the best things about the theatre is its affordability, thanks to a large number of residents who volunteer every weekend.
The Sod House Museum is a memorial to the first settlers in the area. The grounds feature a barn, sod house, windmill and life-sized
barbed wire sculptures. The sod house is a replica of the early homes with sparse interior reflecting the hard times faced by pioneer families.

Well preserved Victorians, compact bungalows, contemporary ranch-style
houses and stately two-story homes are graciously mixed and blended throughout Gothenburg’s residential areas.
Most homes close to the downtown district and along Lake Avenue — one of the
most beautiful “main streets” in America — are 70+ years old. The growth in Gothenburg has been mostly to the north and northeast. New homes are also being built around Wild Horse Golf Club north and west of town. Home prices range from $20,000 to $350,000 although most are priced $80,000 to $250,000. They vary in age from new to 100-year-old historic treasures.
A number of vacant lots are available around the community and are priced between $15,000 and $35,000.
A tract of land in the northeast part of town has recently been developed with the construction of seven spec homes in progress. Lots for home construction around Wild Horse Golf Club northwest of town are still available for $20,000 to $40,000.

Gothenburg residents have a history of going the extra mile to ensure our
community remains a top-notch city. Gothenburg Improvement Company was established in 1961, beginning an organized effort to recruit businesses and people to our community. GIC plays a vital role in securing the city’s future. This volunteer organization depends on the continued dedication of its stockholders and their willingness to freely give of their time, talents and financial resources. Their primary goal is to improve and preserve the quality of life that makes Gothenburg the place we all call home.
The YMCA at Gothenburg Health is one of the latest examples of GIC’s collaborative work to better our community.
An expanded wellness center began as a shared vision that included community, education, recreation and wellness. Through a cooperation between many Gothenburg entities, the community was able to secure a partnership with the YMCA of the Prairie in November 2016. That partnership expanded the original view of the wellness center into a world-class opportunity to unify the community with spaces for educational
opportunities, a gathering area for individuals of all ages and socio-economic status and programming that takes a holistic approach to wellness.
Joining forces is what we do in Gothenburg. A couple of other examples of collective efforts include the annual Livin’ Out Loud
concert and Sun Theatre renovations. Livin’ Out Loud was created out of a vision from Gothenburg community members who asked, “Why not?” In 2013, the first community-wide Christian music event took place in downtown Gothenburg with about 450 attendees. Last year, the event brought more than 10,000 to town. Unified efforts have also allowed continuous upgrades to the Sun Theatre, including neon lights, a digital projection system complete with 7.1 Dolby surround sound and new, more comfortable seats. These examples are just a small part of the “Gothenburg Way” that sets our city apart.

The mission of Gothenburg Public Schools, in conjunction with the entire community, is to prepare all students within a positive,
innovative, environment to be lifelong learners for the 21st century. The Gothenburg school district is fully accredited through the state of Nebraska and the North Central Association. Gothenburg Public Schools boast many fine accomplishments, including the completion of a new $12.3 million junior-senior high school facility in 2004. The elementary was remodeled and classrooms added in 2008, and in 2011 the district completed a $1.1 million renovation project in the cafeteria, kitchen and concession area. A state-of-the-art track and field complex partially funded with $100,000 in private donations was also done in 2011. Each May, a
Junior High State Championship Meet is hosted on the Gothenburg track.
More than two-thirds of the GHS students in grades 7-12 participate in at least one of the 20-plus activities offered, excelling
in many areas other than sports, such as speech, vocal and instrumental music and art. Small class sizes enhance the education of all students.
GOTHENBURG PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Excellence is an Expectation
19The Gothenburg FFA program is one of the
most successful in the state of Nebraska. The FFA program equips future leaders
in agriculture while also emphasizing vocational skills needed for careers in various trades. The chapter has 231 active FFA students involved in a variety of competitions at the local, state and national levels. The Gothenburg chapter was recognized in 2016 as a three-star national chapter for outstanding chapter performance.
In 2016, the school district added a highly successful school-based preschool for our youngest students who may not otherwise
get an early start in the classroom. Success of the program is seen in the highest ever reading preparation scores in kindergarten 2017. Technology is available in all classrooms through the use of tablets, laptops and desktop computers and all students in grades 7-12 use Chromebooks as part of the one-to-one initiative. ACT test scores are consistently above
both state and national averages and more than 85% of students go on for some kind of post-secondary education. Gothenburg teachers are a dedicated group of professionals who encourage, lead, stimulate and influence the students.

Gothenburg’s city administration is led by an elected mayor and four city council members. A city administrator manages
the day-to-day operations and the city council meets bimonthly. Bringing testimony to the city’s enterprising track record are a long list of projects including computerization in city offices; automated electric load management and solar array reducing electric rates; major expansion of the Carnegie Library; nearly 100% success in applying for CDBG funds; an innovative neighborhood revitalization program; railroad overpass; new/existing streets, roads and state highways being resurfaced or widened; waste treatment plant; and community child care center.
With the help of a $7,000 grant from the Carnegie Foundation, Gothenburg’s library was built in 1917. Listed on the
National Register of Historic Places, it offers a unique architectural style. In 1999, a 6,000-square-foot addition was added at a cost of $1.2 million. It was funded entirely by private donations. The library offers a computer lab, study rooms, children’s library with computer lab and a community room. During the school year, preschool children are enrolled in Story Hour. During the summer months, kindergarten through sixth-grade children attend Reading Club.
The Senior Center was originally built in 1983 at a cost of $125,000. The money to build it initially was raised in nine days
coming from local contributors. Since then, the center has undergone a $300,000 expansion/renovation. The staff serves congregate meals at lunch
time Monday through Friday, provides meal delivery to shut-ins and offers activities for the senior residents of Gothenburg.
In 1992, following a major business recruitment, the city recognized a need for additional child care. The child care center is open 6 a.m. to 6
p.m. on weekdays taking children from 6 weeks to 13 years of age. It is able to handle 88 children furnishing two meals plus one snack. School-age children are walked to and from the elementary school nearby.
The fire department has a 44-person squad of all-volunteer firemen. The six-bay facility is large for a city of our size.
The average response time from the moment a fire/emergency call is paged to when the first unit is en route is 2.5 minutes. More than half of the volunteers become Emergency Medical Technicians within three years of joining.
The airport, at an elevation of 2,555 feet, provides two instrument approach runways and a fuel station. Overnight
hanger space is available.

Lake Helen gave Gothenburg its lifeblood with the construction of a powerhouse and water wheel for electricity and irrigation, as
well as the industrial use that followed. That lifeline has branched out into value-added agricultural industries that have flourished. In 1986, residents passed a half-percent sales tax for economic development that has been used to attract new business and industry and to expand existing companies. The funding has helped create over 500 jobs. This resident action, renewed and updated in 2018, provides Gothenburg with a funding mechanism that can be leveraged many times over. The impact of this action on the economic well-being of the community will be felt for years to come. The recruitment of the Frito-Lay corn processing facility and the Bayer (Monsanto)
Water Utilization Learning Center and Seed Research, in addition to manufacturers like Parker Tech Seals and Dawson Tire & Wheel, have put Gothenburg in another industrial boom period.
Farming, ranching, manufacturing, retail sales and tourism are the primary economic activities of the area. By virtue of its
location in the Platte River Valley, agriculture is the major economic factor for the communities in the county. With the benefit of irrigation, it is not uncommon for the area to produce eight tons of alfalfa or 225 bushels of corn or 76 bushels of soybeans per acre. Led by three Fortune 500 companies, other major manufacturers and industries in town include:
27
Locating in Gothenburg more than 40 years ago, Parker Tech Seals Division, owned by Parker-Hannifin, manufactures industrial
seals and employs approximately 70 people. After a five-year recruitment process, Gothenburg became the home for Frito-Lay’s corn gathering facility. It handles between 11 million and 12 million bushels of food-grade corn per year. In the United States, there are only two such facilities: one in Champaign, Illinois, and the other in Gothenburg, Nebraska. If you eat a Frito-Lay corn chip west of the Mississippi, the corn was more than likely handled at Gothenburg’s Frito-Lay plant.
In 2008, Monsanto announced it was building a $6 million learning facility and corn breeding station in Gothenburg. The 324-acre research
farm enables the center to put its focus on technologies, corn breeding and agronomic practices to address water management in crop production. Over 4,000 growers, crop consultants, water policy makers, trade groups, politicians, media and investors have visited the center coming from countries around the world. Research continues following Bayer’s purchase of the Monsanto company in 2018.
Headquartered in Gothenburg, Country Partners Cooperative is a full-service ag cooperative specializing in agronomy,
seed, energy, feed and grain. Serving the community since 1904, it spans a trade territory
of 21 communities over 3.3 million acres. Country Partners Cooperative aims to be the business of choice for its customers, employees and communities by providing innovative services and quality products at competitive prices. Nebraska Salt & Grain, a family-owned trucking business, is the largest hopper-bottom trucking firm in Nebraska hauling grain, rock and road salt. It also stores and transports popcorn for national companies. Recruited in 2010, Dayton Phoenix Group has railroad contracts to work on fans, HVAC units in diesel engines, as well as motor rewinding. With the business demands, it has increased its number of employees to 35.
Dawson Tire & Wheel is North America’s premier supplier of tires, wheels and assemblies for agricultural applications.
It has also designed and created a new species of no-flat pivot tires, a roto-molded tire made under controlled conditions right here in the USA using specially formulated resins, including a percentage of corn-based plastic. Other major non-manufacturing employers include Gothenburg Public Schools, with a student/teacher ratio of 13-to-1 in elementary and 13.5-to-1 at the secondary level; Gothenburg Health, which has increased full-time staff to nearly 150; Hilltop Estates, a 64-bed geriatric care facility that employees approximately 75 people; Stone Hearth Estates, a 2005 facility that provides 23 independent living units, 18 assisted living units and 14 memory care units.
