Happy New Year! Its Janu-ary and for many peoplethat means its time to set
annual resolutions about eat-ing right and living well.
After numerous holiday cel-ebrations, the last few months, for me its almost a relief to getthe house all cleaned up andbegin to think about 2010. It
was so easy during Thanksgiv-ing and Christmas to use allsorts of excuses not to exerciseand eat right. This past season
we even had the excuse ofsnow!
If youre looking for somenew ways to jumpstart yourexercise and health routines, this months Granite Bay Viewissue offers you a plethora ofarticles to read about exercise,
wellness, nutrition and evenmeditation.
For me, my exercise timecomes in the morning before
the work day begins. But thistime of year I find it particular-ly difficult to stick to a schedule
when its so cold and dark out-side. It seems like lately all I
want to do is turn off the alarm
and go back to sleep! But on those mornings when
I do get up and work out Ialways am glad I did completea workout. I even went to anew exercise class called Zum-ba, which is a form of exercisecreated in the mid-90s byColombian native Beto Perez. The class fuses hypnotic Latinrhythms and somewhat easy-to-follow moves inspired bythe traditional cumbia, salsa, samba and merengue music. Itis a total body workout withoutrealizing you are exercising.
In addition to Zumbra I also
went to work out with person-al trainer and Granite Bay Viewfitness columnist Deb Skelton. She has a group of local resi-dents she has been training forabout a year (see page 5) and
last month she invited join in on one of her sesAfter lasting about an hwas fatigued but felt goodshowed up. It wasnt unnext day that I realizedsore I was. I didnt knomany muscles even exist

Finding the perfect place topractice Pilates isnt easy.Though gyms may offer
Pilates, and yoga too, the stu-dent-to-teacher ratio can befairly high, and personal atten-tion is often absent in large set-tings.
Thats a problem that KayDavis and Lesley Allen, ownersof Granite Bay Pilates and Yoga, decided to fix.
We wanted to connect withpeople who were unconnect-ed, with people who didnthave a yoga home or a Pilatesplace, Davis said.
Granite Bay Pilates and Yogarecently celebrated its five-yearanniversary, and has been in itsnew home off Sierra College
and Douglas for about threeyears.Pilates is a core-based exer-
cise that increases flexibility, strength and overall fitness.
Just take a look at the studio, and youll have no doubtsomething big is happening.
Both large and small piecesof equipment line the room, and its interesting to see howmany different ways partici-pants can use each piece.
The Cadillac, the largestpiece in the room, can, at 6 feettall, be a little intimidating.
But the Cadillac may be thevery piece that practitioners
love the best.Pushing, pulling, stretching
and flexing, theres virtually nomuscle that cant be improvedby using the Cadillac in its myr-iad of functions.
Both group instruction andindividual training are offeredseveral times a week, and anygiven morning or afternoon, men and women show up tomake sure they look and feeltheir best.
We do both equipment andmat work, and suggest peopledo both more than one time a
week theyll see a lot of bene-fit from that, Allen said.
Granite Bay resident NeilDoerhoff, is a Granite BayPilates and Yoga regular. He hasbeen attending private ses-sions several times a week forthe last seven years.
After experiencing chronicback problems, he worked
with a fitness coach who wasalso working with the Sacra-mento Kings. When his coachsuggested Pilates, he found theGranite Bay studio, andattends private sessions with
Allen. It was the best thing I ever
did for my back, Doerhoffsaid.
He said he is impressed bythe knowledge and fitness lev-el of the studios staff.
Everything they tell me todo, they can also do, which is aparticular requirement forme, Doerhoff said. Every dayI do something different, and
theyre extremely knowledge-able about muscle attach-ments and tendons.
Pilates has been around foralmost 100 years, but has only,in the last decade or so,become main stream.
Joseph Pilates originally
developed the moves forinjured dancers. His methodsare ideal for rehabilitation pur-
poses, in addition to exercise. We can be the next step
after physical therapy, and canhelp people all the waythrough athletes, Allen said. When you see a Cirque duSoleil type show, you see someof what we do. People become
aware of their posture in a waythey havent known. Its aboutbreath, concentration, controland centering.
More gyms are creatinggroup classes to fulfill theincreased need for Pilatestraining, but Allen and Davisare excited to offer small groupclasses only four people in areformer (equipment) class, and individual sessions as well.
I think you get more aware-ness of your body and morebenefit from a private session, but on the other hand, groupclasses can push you positivelyin the right direction, Allen
said. We offer both, plusgroup yoga classes as well.
Allen and Davis, both formerinstructors at Johnson RanchRacquet Club in Roseville, havebeen in the exercise field formore than 30 years, and con-tinuously stay abreast of cur-
rent research and advanboth Pilates and yoga.
The pair recently expatheir studio, allowing thhave a dedicated yoga sand a massage therapist as well.
Though yoga and Phave some similarities, said she embraces their dences.
I think Pilates movequicker pace. Once become advanced, the gto move pretty quickly, said.Yoga can be more oslow, spiritual side.

I
ts been about a year since
Michelle Dwyer beganworking out in her mother-in-laws Granite Bay garage.
Since that time shes lost 85pounds and is preparing to runin her first half marathon.
Im right where I want tobe, Dwyer, a Loomis residentsaid. It seems like its gone byfast.
Dwyer said she now eats fiveto six mini meals each day andhas not been hungry. Sheadmits the biggest challenge toany fitness regime is consisten-cy.
I used to hate to exercisebut now if I dont do it, I feel
like I dont have any energy, she said.
Dwyer is part of a group ofeight men and women whomeet twice a week for one hour
with certified fitness trainer, rehabilitation specialist andlicensed nurse Debra Skelton
in the garage of Dwyers moth-er-in-law, Judy Dwyer.
Judy, who has lost 40 pounds
this past year, said having thegroup in her home makes thewhole exercising process fun.
And the routines are neverboring. Skelton said she is con-stantly mixing it up andchanges the exercise everyminute for the hour session.
I like to mix cardio withstrength training, Skeltonsaid. Thats the best way toburn fat. A body burns calories
when it is adapting to some-thing new.
Currently Skelton is using anapparatus called a TRX Sus-pension Trainer, which is a setof ropes with handles that is
suspended from a door ornailed into a wall. The TRWuses a persons own body
weight and can be utilized in avariety of exercises that focuson cardio and strength.

New Years Day ... it neverfails to evoke feelings ofhope and renewal, but is
it really a trap?Weve been handed a prover-
bial clean slate anotherchance to shrug off your badhabits and reach for yourdreams.
In an attempt to bottle thatNew Years vigor, youll make afew New Years resolutions. Butbefore you put pen to paper,
you ought to know this:It has been reported that 92
percent of all New Years resolu-tions end in failure.
That means that less than 1out of every 10 people will suc-cessfully accomplish their res-olutions in 2010.
Ouch those statistics arebrutal. Who in their right mind
would take the time to makeresolutions when failure is that
imminent? So yes it is true, most peoplefail to achieve their New Years
resolutions. However, I amgoing to clue you in on whatthe 92 percent do wrong and toinform you of what the 8 per-cent who succeed do right.
First up, the 92 percent whofailed. These well-meaningfolks shared a common mis-take that put the nail in theircoffin before theyd evenbegun.
They bit off more than theycould chew.
In all the excitement ofbecoming a better person andchanging their life in the New
Year they made the crucial
mistake of committing to dotoo much. But reality set in, afew weeks or even days into
their reformed life, and theygave up.
The 92 percent gave them-selves an easy way out. Theyapproached their resolution
with an all-or-nothing attitude.Once the all became tootough they opted for nothing.
Now lets examine the 8 per-cent who succeed with theirresolutions year after year. Thekey to their success is quitesimple (you may have evenguessed it by now).
They set realistic goals.Instead of resolving to lose
50 pounds by June, they com-
mit to exercise three to fourtimes each week.Instead of resolving to give
up all carbs, they commit tobring healthy snacks to workinstead eating from the vend-ing machine.
Instead of resolving to dropthree sizes in three months, they commit to losing onepound each week until theyreach their desired size.
Instead of resolving to nevereat out again, they commit toeating healthy all week andrewarding themselves with onemeal out on the weekends.
Did you see the difference? If you want your resolution
to stick then think of some-
thing simple and realistic. Sure,it certainly wont sound as coolas the resolutions that the 92
percent make but they going to keep theirs anyw

Without adequate fluid intake, confusion can increase, along
with an increased risk of falls.Caldwell recommends
drinking eight glasses of waterthroughout the day. Fluidsshould be increased after exer-cise or in hot weather. At Eska-ton water is passed to the resi-dents several times a day andfrequent reminders by the staff
are given to drink up.Cognitive function andmemory may decrease in somepeople as they age. Caldwellsuggests doing activities that
help with cognitive function, such as reading, crosswordpuzzles, and games like Scrab-ble.
We have a computer pro-gram, which the residents areencouraged to use to helpimprove memory and keep themind sharp. Even simplethings like looking at old pho-tos helps work on recollectionand may improve memory,Caldwell said.

In Sarah Hardestys officeeveryone is on pins and nee-dles. But its not due to anxi-
ety and stress.
Hardesty is an acupuncturistand the pins and needles in herpractice are synonymous withrest, relief from pain and purerelaxation.
Acupuncture, an ancientpractice that was recorded inChina more than 2,000 yearsago, has enjoyed increasingpopularity in the United Statesover the last few decades.
Hardesty said the techniqueis a fast-growing health carealternative and supplement totraditional Western medicine.
Hardesty works with clients, and in some cases, clientsphysicians as well.
People might think that anacupuncturist might have justtaken a few classes, but thatsnot the case, Hardesty said. Ihave eight years of total med-ical training.
Hardesty has been practicingalternative medicine for 15
years, and specifically, Asianmedicine for five. She has amasters of science degree intraditional Chinese medicine, and is working on a clinicaldoctorate, which she will com-plete soon.
But degrees and diplomasarent what visitors thinkabout, once theyre on Hard-
estys table.A spa-like setting, the treat-
ment room inside the Back toHealth Center in Granite Baymimics that of any massagetable.
Except for the wall chartsrevealing pressure points andmeridians a simple idea thatseems extremely complex
when gazing at the dot-to-dotof points on the wall, patientsmight forget theyre about tobe the recipient of almost-too-small-to-see needles.
Acupuncture is all abouttreating the body holistically,or achieving a balance, or
homeostasis, Hardesty said.It doesnt look at symptoms,so much, as the fact that animbalance in the body causesthe symptoms. It treats the rootproblem instead of putting aband-aid on it.
She said by allowing thebody to reach a state of balance
it can help alleviate symptomsor eliminate them all together -Symptoms of myriad achesand ailments, from arthritisand other chronic pain condi-tions, to menopausal discom-fort, to weight loss.
The needle-phobic need notbe alarmed. The first thing I do is take
out a needle and show you. Itsliterally hair thin, Hardestysaid. People can be nervous. They have this association withhollow needles that hurt.
Acupuncture patients rarelyfeel the needle at all, and Hard-esty said many people suffer-ing from painful conditionsexperience relief immediately.
I was pleasantly surprisedto see how fast my symptoms
were gone, and how pain free Iwas, said Michelle Diodati, aGranite Bay resident and one
of Hardestys patients. It wastruly full-circle treatment.
Some people find relief afterone or two treatments, for oth-ers, it can take a bit longer, especially for chronic painconditions.
When people come in witha migraine headache, I want tofind out why. What kind ofimbalance do you have? Mygoal is to not have you in myoffice on a regular basis, Hard-esty said. Maybe just for atune up a couple times a year, once we get you in balance.
She explained that treat-ments depend on numerous
factors, and a first visit can takeup to an hour and a half, andincludes an extensive inter-view.
I might have six differentpatients come in withmigraines, and treat them sixcompletely different ways, shesaid.
Hardesty has been practicingin Granite Bay since August. Arecent transplant from SantaCruz, she spent an afternoon
each week volunteering hertreatments at a men and
womens homeless shelter inher previous location.
Hardesty said she intends torenew her commitment totreating the underserved, andhas her eye on an addictiontreatment center where she
hopes to donate her expertiseon a weekly basis, once she isfully settled.
But building her practice
here in Granite Bay is first andforemost on her list this winterseason.
I see acute and chronic painsufferers theyre probably mymost frequent clients, shesaid. I also see a lot of successhelping people with auto-immune disorders, like
fibromyalgia, chronic faand multiple sclerosis.
Hardesty also menopausal women wh
able to go off of, or avoidmone replacement theand diabetes patients whable to reduce their depence on insulin.
Its good preventativeicine, and good for boothe immune system, toosaid.

veryone knows thatweight loss is a product ofsimple math. Burn more
calories than you take in andthe pounds will slowly drop.
But according to Granite Baydoctor Ed Hendricks, the typesof calories you ingest areimportant, too and caloriesfrom high-quality protein arekey.
Hendricks, a bariatric weightloss physician, also known as amedical weight managementdoctor, was awarded the honorof Bariatrician of the Year, bythe American Society ofBariatric Physicians in 2009.
An honor Hendricks takes
seriously while running TheCenter for Weight Manage-ment with his wife, nutritionistPaula Hendricks, in bothRoseville and Sacramentolocations.
The Hendricks who wereboth overweight when theybegan seriously investigatingthe causes and treatment ofobesity, believe that to lose
weight, four keys must beaddressed: motivation, propereating, physical activity andcorrecting abnormal chem-istry.
We believe in having a bal-ance protein, carbohydrates,
and fat. We dont believe ineliminating any of those,Paula Hendricks said.
But protein is the one funda-mental that Paula Hendricksthinks people dont get enoughof.
Ed Hendricks agreed. Its important to start your
day with 30 grams of protein.Otherwise, your body will startto break down muscle. When
you get in your 60s, you canend up without much musclemass, he said.
A high-protein, mid morn-ing snack doesnt necessarilymean hauling five slices of
bacon around in your purse. Acaramel crunch protein bar, orvanilla wafer protein square, both available at the center, arepacked with the same amountof protein as the strips ofbacon, and satisfy with sur-prisingly delicious flavors andtextures according to Ed Hen-
dricks. And people achieveweight loss goals by utithe many foods and suments the center offers, simply following a medsupervised diet, while esome of their favorite from the local grocery sto

Ananda and therapeutic yoga, guided imagery and music andcraniofacial therapy.
Although she was a studentof yoga for years, Rickmanreceived formal training as aninstructor at the ExpandingLight Ananda and MedicationRetreat in Nevada City. She also
completed a three- year train-ing program in guided imagery
with the Association for Musicand Imagery.
Ananda yoga is a gentleform of exercise, which focuseson the three aspects of yogaincluding balance, strength

such as power yoga may bemore strenuous and not rightfor all fitness levels. Anandastyle yoga is appropriate forpeople of all ages and exercisebackgrounds.
That gentle approach is whatattracted Nora Grimm to the
center a year and half ago.Grimm, who is currently
undergoing cancer treatment, feels the health benefits areboth, physical and emotional.
I think coming to the centerand doing yoga has helped me
with balance and flexibility. Ithas also help keep my emo-tions balanced and reduce
stress while I go throughchemotherapy, Grimm said.
Rickman believes in addingaffirmations to some yoga pos-es.
The affirmations promotepsychological benefits to theexercise, Rickman said.
During yoga exercises deepbreathing techniques are alsointegrated. This deep breath-ing, along with the stretchingand poses helps promoterelaxation and a feeling a well-

Each year in Januarythoughts of what we wantto accomplish in the New
Year seem to magically appear.Children often listen to us
talk about these New YearsResolutions.
Taking the time to help yourchild develop his/her own res-olutions is very beneficial. Itshows caring on your part, andit reinforces in the childs mind
what you think is important. The following are some ideas
for resolutions in the areas of
health, hygiene and nutrition, exercise, school, friends andself that can be discussed with-in the family and will give yourchild some ideas of resolutionsto make.
Make it fun by making short-term resolutions with rewards;otherwise, like adults, theymay make the resolution andits importance dwindles andthen the resolution is not kept.
Keep the resolutions shortand suggest rotating them sothey are more likely to be suc-cessful. For example, onemonth work on how to be abetter friend, etc. I will be a
better friend this month by____.Making too many resolu-
tions at once puts too muchpressure on a child. Once thechild feels success, adding onanother resolution will then befun.

With the TRX you are able totransition from one exerciseto a another in minimal time.
You get the best workout in theshortest amount of time work-ing every muscle group using
your core all the time. With theTRX you develop strength, gainflexibility and balance. Its atotal body workout, anywhere,

doing it for fitness and goodhealth. Debra really keeps usgoing. If I were by myself, Id betaking a break right now.
Terry agreed and said howshe and John motivate eachother.
The group works hard, theres no time to slack as Skel-
ton calls out a different set ofinstructions at a constant rate.
Shes just so nice about itall, John Ritchey said.
Skelton said even if herGranite Bay group didnt usean apparatus such as the TRX,exercise goals are still achiev-
able. You dont need a lot of fancyequipment to get into shape,Skelton said. You really canexercise anywhere.
A typical workout of Skel-tons Granite Bay group con-sists of jogging up and downDwyers street, jumping rope, doing football runs, where theparticipants run in a sidewaysdirection with feet closetogether as quickly as possible, push ups, lunges and lots ofabdominal work on a mat.
You could do this routine ina park using a park bench fordips, or anywhere, Skelton
said.For those who pledge to
have fitness a part of their NewYears resolution, Skelton saidthe important part is to just getmoving. It doesnt matter whattype of routine you do, justkeep changing it up and thebody will change.

I was referred by anotherdoctor, because my weight wascreeping up slowly twopounds, two pounds, twopounds, Smith said. I had
way too many carbs in my diet, but I learned from Dr. Hen-dricks that its not so much adiet, as a way to live.
Smith is thrilled to havedeveloped a healthy relation-ship with food, and sticks bythe motto I eat to live, I dontlive to eat.
For people who are busy, they may travel a lot, thats noexcuse. Ive stuck to thehealthy eating lifestyle in Asia,
in Europe, I did it in DesMoines. It doesnt matter. Its
just learning to eat differently, she said.
A big bonus for Smith shecredits Dr. Hendricks for help-ing her fit into her stewardessuniform she wore decades ago,and lose more than 50 pounds.
Ive been there, I know howdifficult it is to lose weight. Theself esteem its an emotionalthing. Its not just about how
you look in your clothes,Smith said.
The Center for Weight Man-agement offers different plansfor different people, all predi-
cated on an initial interviewand evaluation.
The low-carb and low-calo-rie diets are typically shortterm, leading to the mainte-nance diet, which is all aboutbalance, never about depriva-tion.
Ed Hendricks noted the
many health risks associatedwith even minor excess weight.
Eighty-six percent ofpatients who walk in here areeither hypertensive or pre-hypertensive. There are greatercardiovascular risks associated
with excess weight, Ed Hen-dricks said. Theres a continu-ous spectrum of cardio risk,
beginning at being just twopounds overweight. It starts
with the very first pound ofexcess weight, in fact, he said. Its definitely a chronic illness, and you have to approach itfrom that direction.
Paula Hendricks agreed. Its about being able to keep
up with your children, or yourgrandchildren, she said. Myhusband is in his 70s. He takesno medication, eats 150 gramsof protein daily, and works outevery day. He expects to bearound until hes 120, shesaid.
The Henricks, along with
daughter, Mia, practice whatthey preach. Paula Hendricksinsists on preparing dinnernightly in their Granite Bayhome, and some familyfavorites are beef or chicken ona Caesar salad, with home-made dressing, and beef filetatop spinach greens.
