Despite Placer Countys Augustunemployment rate of 11.5 percent, top Roseville employers have been
finding ways to give back to the commu-nity. Earlier this year, top Rosevilleemployer Kaiser Permanente expanded its
Roseville campus with a $150 millionregional Women and Children Center. Twohundred nurses help run the state-of-the-art 174-bed labor and delivery facility.
It made sense to build the center here, said Kaiser Roseville Dr. Robert Azevedo
who is an OB/GYN. There are a lot ofyoung families in Roseville.
What sets Kaiser apart is the 48-bedNeonatal Intensive Care Unit and 10-bedPediatric Intensive Care Unit, which issaid to provide the highest level of care tocritically ill babies and children. Before itsopening, patients with special needs wentto UC Davis or Kaiser Oakland. Now
Azevedo said the center is experiencing ababy boom with 400 to 450 deliveries amonth in Roseville. The rooms weredesigned for maximum comfort.
We wanted family members to stay allnight long and come and go comfortably,
Azevedo said.Labor and delivery rooms are private
and feature a bathroom with shower, phone, flat-screen TV and a fold-out bedso a family member can stay overnight.
The colors and decorations help peo-
ple feel more relaxed and heal faster.Azevedo said. A lot of people dont expectit and are appreciative.
One of the top issues addressed by
Rosevilles new center is children witbrain tumors. Kaiser created a playroomas an oasis where no IVs are drawn antests are banned so children know thecan relax. Kaiser went one step further tlift the spirits of the children with a musiinteraction program where volunteerbring instruments and music to the children. Music teacher Nancy Nelle saithere is nothing like bringing a smile to child whos hurting.
Its a wonderful feeling, Nelle said. Tgive them a respite, a brief time together iimportant.
Nelle said even a song like Old McDonald Had a Farm can unite the family in
joyful moment. They add the animal sounds and th
whole family gets involved, she said. Fothat brief minute we were all just having great time laughing together.
Those silly songs wouldnt be completwithout puppets and instruments for thchildren.
It helps the parents too, Nelle said

Its not always easy to stay posi-tive and creative when businessis down.
No one knows this better than WendyGerig, chief executive officer for theRoseville Chamber of Commerce, whichincludes Granite Bay.
Coming up with innovative programsand listening to all ideas is whats keepingthe Chamber alive and well.
Gerig said Chamber membership hasdropped from 1,800 in the fall of 2008, toabout 1,500 today. In addition, attendanceis down at many of its events.
One of the most troubling part of thesestatistics is the number of businesses thathave left the Chamber because they are
either out of business or are having diffi-culty staying in business, she said. Buteven with the state of it all, we haventstopped doing what we think is importantfor our businesses and our members.
But the news is not all bad. Gerig saidone of the Chambers annual fundraisers,
SPLASH, which was held at the Roseville Aquatic Center in September is usuallysold out with 1,200 tickets purchased. This
year 943 tickets were sold. The Chamber will net $50,000 with that amount splitbetween the Chamber and the city ofRosevilles Project Play, universal assess-able playgrounds.
Even though attendance was down, the people who attended had a good
time, Gerig said. They realized it had val-ue.Celebrate Roseville Chamber, a one-
month celebration, is one way Gerig saidthe Chamber is trying this year to promotea variety of activities and events in theRoseville and Granite Bay communities.
The month includes a special Chambemembership drive where members wh
join the Chamber during the month oOctober receive one months dues free.
The entire month of October has bee
divided into three categories: Live, Play anWork. Each category offers a variety oevents and activities such as a fashioshow, a 5K run, community expo anrestaurant promotions.
One of our strong components as chamber is our ability to partner with thcity of Roseville, Gerig said. The citknows that the stronger the business community is, the stronger the city will be.
Gerig said promoting education ianother way the Chamber attracts members.
Many people move here because of ou
schools, Gerig said.Programs such as Principal for the Daand the annual teacher recognition luncheon help to get the word out about thconnection between education and thcommunity.

Two years ago the term short sale wasexotic real estate lingo no one under-stood. Today short sales account for
more than half of all the real estate listingsin Roseville and Granite Bay, according tothe Placer County Association of Realtors.
The median home price in Placer Coun-ty has been holding steady at $277,000and hasnt been that low since May of2002, according to PCAR. Anyone whobought or refinanced when the high was$517,000 in Aug of 2005 would be upsidedown today. With exotic financing, manyhomeowners threw in the towel and fore-
closed. Life after foreclosure meant a 300point drop in their FICO score and a banfrom mortgage approval for three years.
For Roseville resident Nicole White andher husband, short sale gave them some-thing foreclosure couldnt-a life lesson anda difficult personal journey she respectstoday.
At the time, it was either buy groceriesor pay the mortgage, White said. We def-initely learned.
In a short sale, the homeowner ordebtor sells the mortgaged property forless than the outstanding balance of the
loan, and turns over the proceeds of thesale to the lender. The key is the lenderwould have the right to approve or disap-prove of a proposed sale. The short saleprocess is tricky and takes months of fol-low-up and waiting before a bank decidesif the short sale is right or foreclosure is theonly option.
White and her young family, like thou-sands of homeowners in Placer County, learned the hard way how to survive ashort sale. After a year of struggling withher adjustable rate mortgage, selfemployed in a bad economy, they consid-ered foreclosure.
I felt like I was being a bad person byletting them foreclose on my house,
White said. I had a little voice in my headthat said there must be a better way. Thats
when we found out about short sales. The Whites turned to RE/MAX Gold
Associate Broker Ed Kittle to be their shortsale guru.
The lender tells homeowners they cantdo a loan modification until they miss apayment, Kittle said. Then they donthear from the lender again until they get
the foreclosure notice in the mail. Thatswhen they call me.
Kittle is now a certified distressed prop-erty expert from the National Associationof Realtors, something that wasnt offereduntil recently.
White said some people in her shoeswould have been threatened by the mort-gage company and hired a lawyer, but shesaid, thats a money pit.
Dont contact your mortgage company, dont hire a lawyer-hire a Realtor, Whitesaid. And make sure they are experiencedin short sales.
After eight months of waiting for the
bank to approve the short sale, White anKittle got their approval. It happened jusdays before the threatened foreclosurauction.
That whole situation is traumatizing,White said. I feel damaged from it-like break-up.
Now like so many Roseville and GranitBay residents White had to figure out wha
was the next step after short sale. Was hecredit ruined? Would she be renting for threst of her life?
White said she paid everything excep

With the holiday season just aroundthe corner, many people are gear-ing up to make some repairs and
updates to their homes. From new roofs and siding to adding
state-of-art kitchen and other householdappliances, people have more optionsthan ever when it comes to making pur-chases that can help them save moneyand the environment.
The ENERGY STAR program, a jointeffort from the U.S. Environmental Pro-tection Agency and the U.S. Departmentof Energy, is designed to help people savemoney on their utility bills while reducinggreenhouse gasses. In 2008, more than $19billion was saved on utility bills throughthe program. According to the New YorkState Energy Research and Development
Authority, investing $3,000 to $8,000 inyour home not including rebates can
result in savings of 10 to 30 percent annu-ally on utility bills.
For people who are looking to sell theirhomes or simply a good investment, ener-gy-efficient options can make your homemore valuable. According to the EPA, a $1investment in your home can add about$20 in value. In other words, for every$1,000 invested in energy efficiency, you
gain about $20,000 in value.Brian Hood of Hood Bronco Invoca
tions located in Rockin, says one way treduce energy costs is to install computerized, automated systems into the homeHood says many people dont realize thahome automation systems are designeto reduce your homes electricity bills significantly. By installing Hood BroncoControl4 system Hood says an averagthree-bedroom home could eliminate 85pounds of CO emissions each year. Hoosays theres no need for homeowners tbuy new lights or special light bulbs.
Our system works with what yoalready have, but makes it more efficienthrough controlling the amount of energgoing into the light bulb, Hood said. Control4s system allow for simple, integrateand secure control of systems throughou
your home, including video, audio, lighting, temperature, garage-door openerssprinklers, and security systemseve

Hood says homeowners can start smallby adding control to an existing home-entertainment system, then expand yoursystems capabilities as you go.
In addition to convenience, increasedsafety is a major benefit of home controlsystems. When a smoke detector is trig-gered, for example, the system can auto-matically turn off your HVAC system toprevent smoke from circulating, turn oninterior lights to aid evacuation, and blink
your propertys exterior lights to assistemergency personnel in locating yourhome.

Control4s modular solutions can beutilized for both new construction andremodeling. The companys wirelessproducts eliminate the need to open upexisting walls in order to run wiring,
which makes it easy and affordable toretrofit older homes.
Colby Swanson, a building and con-struction expert for BASF, a manufacturer
of energy-efficient products for the home, offers these additional recommendationson how you can save yourself money bymaking improvements on your house.
Seal the DealStart with improving the envelope of the
building (specifically attic air sealing andinsulating) before buying things like ahigh-efficiency furnace, air conditioner orsolar-power cells. The money you maysave would be wasted if the building cantcontain the expensive conditioned air.Swanson says that air leakage from thehouse through the ceiling is one of thelargest contributors for heating and cool-ing loss with improperly installed atticinsulation close behind. Focusing on atticair sealing and properly installed insula-tion is generally the most cost effectiveenergy and comfort related improvementin an existing home. The U.S. Departmentof Energy reports that up to 40 percent ofthe energy cost of heating and cooling astructure is wasted by uncontrolled airleakage.
The attic has some of the most extremeweather on the planet, Swanson says. Itsextremely hot in the summer and bitterlycold in the winter. Therefore, air sealing
and insulating this extremely harsh envi-ronment from the house is crucial.Professionally installed foam in the
attic will far outperform the conventionalproducts both in air sealing and insulatingcapability resulting in much more com-fortable homes and substantially lowerheating and cooling bills, says Swanson.Studies indicate that a thorough job ofleak sealing can cut your homes total airleakage by 33 to 46 percent reducing
your heating and cooling bills up to 20percent. To help further the energy effi-ciencies of a home and help homeownersremain environmentally conscious, dontdispose of the attic insulation beingreplaced, recycle it by placing it on top ofthe newly placed foam.
Spray-on RadiantAnother simple and less costly way for
homeowners to make their homes moreenergy-efficient: apply a radiant barriercoating that is sprayed on the underside ofthe roof in the attic, which will lower heat-ing and cooling bills and increase comfort.
In the summer, it reflects some of the heathat radiates through the roof deck bacoutside and, to a lesser degree, in the winter reflects heat back into the house.
One option is Radiance, made by BASFa water-based product that can bsprayed on to the underside of the roof oapplied with a paint roller.
New AppliancesAfter the ceiling is air tight and insulat
ed correctly, consider appliances. Nextime you need to replace your homewater heater, consider this: after the furnace and air conditioner it is the biggesuser of energy in a house.
As of 2009, you can now purchase water heater certified as an ENERGY STARappliance.
Show Me the MoneyFinancial help is available. What man
homeowners may not know is that thehave the opportunity to leverage manrebates provided by local utility and statprograms on top of the federal tax incentives to help finance home energy-efficiency investments.
These attractive rebates and incentivevary widely (approximately 5 percent to 5percent savings) to help offset a homeowners investment to air seal, insulate opurchase high efficiency appliances. Thfederal government offers a 30 percenrebate of up to $5,000 on energy investment.

hakespeare said the world was a stage. If thats true, RyanDressel could pick out some new paint, trim the hedges and
have the place sold in a week.Former mortgage broker turned home stager, Dressel, a
Roseville resident, said it was a natural transition from lendingand mortgages to choosing fabric swatches and paint samples.
After 10 years in the mortgage industry working for MerrillLynch, Dressel was laid off in December 2007. With the advice ofsome friends coupled with the contacts from his former employ-er, he decided to start his own staging business last spring.
Although I hate the term, Ive always had an eye for it, Dres-sel said. Ive owned many homes and redone them myself andmy friends would come over and say youre in the wrong busi-ness.
Parlaying what he knew in real estate with what came natural-ly in interior designing, Dressel said Stage Right Design hit the
ground running in March 2008.

I never would have walked away frommy job at Merrill Lynch to do this, Dresselsaid. Thank God I got laid off.
Now, Dressel is the go-to guy for manyhomeowners and local real estate agentsto make an empty house look like a hometo speed up the selling process. But thats
only half of the job. Dressel also meetswith homeowners who are simply lookingto breathe new life into their homes.
You stage for real estate because yourenot just selling brick and mortar, youreselling an emotion, Dressel said. This isgoing to be someones home, it needs tolook and feel that way.
Whether its a foreclosed house, realestate listing or for sale by owner, Dresselsays its important for potential homebuy-ers to feel comfortable in the house and beable to see themselves living there.
For homeowners selling their family
home, this means removing anything bla-tantly political or religious and personalitems like family portraits, which canmake potential buyers feel invasive, Dres-sel said.

A problem that some homeownershave is they cant look at their home objec-tively, Dressel said. Sometimes it helps
to bring in a third party to tell you howthings really look.Paint, Dressel said, is a sellers best
friend due to its transforming power andcost effectiveness. Dressel suggests usingneutral colors on walls and brightly col-ored room accents, like lamps and throwpillows to help the eye move about theroom.
Another small change that makes a bigdifference Dressel said, is swapping outtired light fixtures and cabinetry hardwarefor updated ones, an inexpensiveimprovement that makes a lasting impres-
sion and brightens up rooms.Take a cold, hard look at your furniture, too, Dressel said. If you have to rent anew couch and club chair the $2,000 willhurt a lot less than the $10,000 off yourasking price. Believe it or not, bad furni-ture makes the rest of the house lookpoorly taken care of too.
When Dressel is called in to stage a
home for sale he starts where a potentialbuyer starts, at the curb.
I put on what I call my buying eyes,Dressel said. I look at the landscaping, outdoor lighting and I look at what isgoing to knock a buyers offer down andthats where we start.
After that, its all interior work. An emp-ty home, whether it is brand new or bank-owned, is made to look lived in. This
means the main rooms of the home arefurnished and decorated courtesy of Dres-sels warehouse, which is stuffed withenough loot to stage six homes.
When I go in to stage a home for sale,Im not staging to please the homeowneror the Realtor, Dressel said. My goal is toappeal to 90 percent of the people outthere so anyone who walks in can see
themselves living there.Christy Clark, had always decorated he
previous homes and apartments. But aftea round of layoffs doubled her workloadshe found she had neither the desire nothe energy to decorate her home iRoseville. An area sales manager for General Electric, Clark said her home habecome more of a train station evethough she worked from her home office
She found herself using her house as place to eat, sleep and pick up a change oclothes before heading back into hemessy office.
I wasnt happy and I generally didnwant to be at home, Clark said.
Thats when she enlisted Dressel to per

her office to keep her organized.Home decorating, Dressel said, issomething that doesnt come naturallyto everybody. Dressel says the thingabout home decorating and staging is tounderstand the clients tastes and whattheir ideas of those tastes are.
Finally, Dressels ultimate goal whenhe stages a home for living is to help theclient achieve a magazine-like, clutter-free perfection in less than 20 minutes.
Whether its to vacate for a Realtor andan open house or to welcome impromp-

school, and two alternative schools, thedistrict is able to meet a large variety ofneeds.
I think the district is very broad ithas something for every student, saidJohn Montgomery, assistant superin-tendent of curriculum services. The
community just has to look at all theschools. Our alternative schools arereally excellent.
Montgomery explained the alterna-tive schools specialize in credit recovery a way for students to make up timethey may have lost due to a family hard-ship or any number of scenarios, and tosupport the student who prefers a dif-ferent learning environment.
The alternative schools specialize insmaller class sizes as well. They offer a
wide variety of interventions maybethe student learns in a specific way.
Maybe theyre visual learners, or wouldlike to learn online, Montgomery said. For those students looking for aca-
demic challenge, two of RosevilleUnions high schools, Granite Bay andOakmont, offer an International Bac-calaureate program.
The IB curriculum is internationallyknown its a complete program,Montgomery said.
In addition, the district offers numer-ous advanced placement and honorscourses, which colleges look at, andhold the district in high regard because
of the districts rigorous academics,
according to Montgomery.Colleges respect our district greatly
we have high test scores, some of thhighest ACT, SAT and numbers of kidtaking advanced placement courses anexams, Montgomery said. Werproud of the opportunities we offer w
want to make sure that every studenhas an opportunity to go to college.
In addition to public schoolsRoseville and Granite Bay have nshortage of private schools.
Schools like St. Albans Country DaSchool, St. Rose School and St. JohnSchool offer a small setting and stronacademics.
Reverend Paul Hancock, headmastefor St. Johns school, explained thoughthey are an Episcopal school, studentof different faiths are welcomed.
We are an Episcopal school that welcomes religious diversity, he said. Wfocus on a strong academic program
with a goal of laying the foundation fopreparation for four-year colleges anuniversities.
The schools mean score on nationatests is at or above the 70th percentileand they offer before and after schoocare, as well as enrichment classes likSpanish, computers, art, music anddance.
