Stapleford Community Group are proud to announce we have been successful with our grant application to improve Ilkeston Road Recreation Ground for the bene� t of the local community.

A� er talks with Groundwork Greater Nottingham a proposal was drawn up and our Chairman Richard MacRae spent many days talking to people on the park to get there views on the ideas. A full public consultation took place involving both users of the park and residents who live around the park, we would like to thank Councillor John McGrath who got Broxtowe Borough Council to produce the lea� ets we delivered as part of the consultation process. A grant for £49,999 has kindly been given by WREN (Waste Recycling Environmental Limited), this will be added to the £6,500 that Broxtowe BoroughCouncil agreed to put towards the improvement scheme.

� e new improvements will include the following:

New circulatory footpaths with seating.

Relocation of the two play areas, and combining these into one larger play area to cater for a wide range of ages and abilities.

Wild� ower and bulb planting.

It has taken over 3 years to get where we are now and it’s been through the hard work and determination of Richard MacRae as well as Groundwork Greater Nottingham that we have been successful. � e photograph shown here are people who are approaching retirement and have attended a Pre-Retirement Course held at Beeston Town Halllast month.� is course covers everything you need to know in relation to retirement and all the delegates have enjoyed the help and support from the Nottingham & District Pre-Retirement group (a local charity who are celebrat-ing 47 years in existence).� e only problem is that not many people are aware that there is a group right on their doorstep who ensure anyone within 3 years of retirement are noti� ed of the many important changes in legislation which will a� ect State Retirement Pension dates. � is will be particularly pertinent in relation to the Flat Rate State Pension which will start in April 2016. � e course also cov-ers the recent budget proposals in relation to annuities and other hot topics.� is course was an eye opener to all the delegates and many said they had not realised how much infor-mation was provided, such as “if I live in my villa in Spain, will I still receive my Government pension?”“If I have a part time job will I pay tax and, if so how much?” or “how much will my investments be a� ected?”“Can I still obtain credit when I retire?”“If I have to go into residential care, will I have to sell my property to pay the fees?”� e Nottingham Pre-Retirement is holding courses each month at Beeston Town Hall and full details are on the website www.ndprc.org.uk or you cancontact Phil Whitt on 0115 922 3824 to register for the next session. RUN THROUGH LEAVES and trees and take to the open road at the Decathlon Broxtowe Duathlon this October – it’s the perfect � tnesschallenge for adults and juniors alike. � e event will return to Colliers Wood, Moorgreen on Sunday 12th October and is a great opportunity to try some-thing new, as well as provide a challenge for more experienced runners and cyclists. � e event starts with a run through Colliers Wood on footpaths, pavements and trails, followed by a bike ride on roads in Underwood, Moorgreen and Watnall and � nishing with a � nal run around Colliers Wood. � ere are two distances for the adult event. � e Beginners event involves a 2K Run, 7K Bike and a 1K Run. � e Challenge event involves a 4K Run, 14K Bike and a 2K Run. � is year’s event will also see the launch of an all new Junior Taster Scootathon for juniors over 9 years old, which in-cludes an 800m Run, a 1.3K Scoot on a Scooter and a 600m Run. Adult races start from 9.00am. Junior races start from 12.30pm. Deadline for entry is � ursday 2nd October.

� e Junior Taster event costs £8.00 per person. Participants can also enter online for a discounted entry fee of £5.00 per person. � e Beginners event costs £14.00 per person or £11.00 discounted entry online and the Challenge event costs £17.50 per person or £14.50 discounted entry online. Book Review by Clare Lyons

Carry On, Jeeves by P G Wodehouse� is is the � rst of the series of wonderful stories about the relationship between Bertie Wooster and his man, Jeeves. Jeeves’ � rst job is to help cure Bertie’s hangover, and so their special bond is created. � ere are many more books in the series and all of them are equally beautiful in their locations and quirky, eccentric characters. None of the stories have shocking endings or explicit language but during a hot summer it’s rather nice sometimes to read something funny and light and with the guarantee of a happy ending. It is the tender friendship between servant and master that makes the books so unique, that Jeeves is always able to forsee the trouble that Bertie is likely to get into and have a plan in place to sort it out becomes the pattern for their relationship. It is touching that Jeeves is so clearly the real master, and works so tirelessly to keep Bertie in good standing with his complicated family and out of wedlock with a series of unsuitable women. � e books are mainly short stories, and the writing does become a bit formulaic if you read them in quick succession, but they make a nice break in-between more taxing literature. Set in the 1920’s the books have become a great timepiece for the era and the great adaptation for TV by Fry and Laurie is always worth a watch.

Children’s ChoiceThe Hueys in The New Jumper by Oliver Jeffers� is is the � rst book about the Hueys, and if you like the unusual style of Je� ers then you will not be disappointed. � e illustrations are particularly simple and plain giving lots of opportunity for discussion. � e thrust of the story is about how much people like to be the same generally, and not stand out or get picked on for being di� erent, it goes on to explore the notion that we sometimes have an idea that does separate us from the crowd, and how we can manage that. It’s a great way to introduce ideas about ‘di� erence’ with small children, but because the pictures are not childish, the book has also proved very useful to promote discussions with older children on the same themes.We have just borrowed the next book � e Hueys – None the Number from the library to go on an adventure to � nd the number zero. � ere is also � e Hueys – It Wasn’t Me if you get really hooked. www.letyourselfgrow.org

LAWRENCE EXHIBTION REVEALS EASTWOOD WAR YEARS VISITORS TO THE D.H. Lawrence Festival can explore Eastwood’s heritage at this year’s Festival Exhibition to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. Lawrence and the War Years is open until 2nd November and explores how the war a� ected both Lawrence’s personal life as well as his work and writing. � e exhibition will also consider the impact of the Great War on the lives of those living in Eastwood at the time, bringing together stories and pieces of history collected from the time of the war from spies, Belgian refugees and enlistment to conscientious objectors, Zeppelins, & more. � e Heritage Centre have encouraged local people to support the exhibition and loans items from the period, including WWI medals kindly loaned by the recipients granddaughter. � e exhibition is open until 2nd November at the Rainbow Gallery in the D.H. A Nottingham Library Remembers: Bromley House Library and � e First World War 1914 - 1918

Bromley House Library, on Angel Row in Nottingham, was pleased to be one of the early partners on the City and County ‘Trent to Trenches’ project, commemorating World War One. For both our talks and exhibition, we decided to focus on stories with a local connection, concentrating on the East Midlands, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, and more speci� cally Bromley House Library and its members.� e exhibition has been made possible by the generosity and enthusiasm of the library’s members, who have o� ered to loan their precious photographs and mementoes, and to tell the ‘stories’ behind their families’ experience of the Great War. It will be displayed in the Bromley House Gallery and in the main reading rooms, and will include two and three dimensional objects and artefacts, displayed alongside photographic images of those involved in the war – many of whom lost their lives.� e exhibition will be open to the public every Wednesday from 10th September, 10.30am – 4pm We have a diverse programme of subjects and speakers for our Saturday lectures (£5.00 pp) and Wednesday lunchtime talks, which we are also opening up to the public. � e talks on Wednesdays are free but tickets need to be reserved in advance.
