Why not visit Paignton Harbour? Many visitors to Paignton think that the town ends at the southern end of the promenade. Not so - just go through the archway to find Paignton Harbour one of Torbay`s hidden gems. Although Paignton was recorded as a fishing village in the Doomsday book of 1086, the little harbour you can see today was constructed in 1837. The first commercial vessel carrying coal, timber and stone came into the harbour in 1837, leaving with cabbages and cider. During that period the harbour was used regularly by various small brigs and schooners engaged in trade. Originally the harbour was privately owned but it was purchased by the local council in 1935. During this period the harbour authority appointed Stella Gale as Harbour Master and at the time she was the only female harbour master, if not the first, in the British Isles.

Nowadays the harbour remains a hive of activity; especially during the summer months and a vast range of

different users enjoy the benefits of this unassuming little port. Frequent ferries to and from Torquay and Brixham can be caught from the harbourside. Paignton harbour is also host to several marine related businesses, plus cafés, a restaurant, seafood and snack bars - ideal for watching the daily harbour ‘goings on’ or simply enjoying the atmosphere of the seaside along with great views across Tor Bay. The harbour is less than 10 minutes walk from Paignton Town Centre and the beaches are even closer. A car park is conveniently located right next to the harbour. A multi-award-winning seafood and music festival, Fishstock Brixham 2015 takes place on Saturday, September 5th. This event raises vital funds for the Fisherman’s Mission, the only UK charity devoted to supporting our fishing communities.

The fishing industry, seafood businesses and maritime heritage of Brixham will come together in a glorious celebration of seafood, music and entertainment for all the family on Saturday September 5th.

See expert seafood demonstrations by chefs from South Devon College, Simon Hulstone from the Elephant and Kirk Gosden from Mitch Tonks’ Seahorse amongst others. Live music will feature local and international musicians including

Duke Johnson and the Scorchers and the Vans, all the way from Australia as well as the best in local Folk, Roots and Acoustic bands including the spectacular Big Noise Chorus.

There will be boats alongside to tour, including modern “Beam-trawler” Barentszee and heritage fishing smacks, Pilgrim & Vigilance and plenty of family fun too including Bouncy Castle, children’s entertainers and cookery classes for kids in the Food is Fun kitchens.

Past events have won Gold & Silver accolades at the Herald Express Hospitality Awards in 2012, 2013 and 2014. There truly is something for all the family to eat, to drink and to enjoy at Fishstock Brixham.

The Good Beach Guide The Marine Conservation Society’s ‘Good Beach Guide’ recommends 14 beaches within the bay. They are: Maidencombe, Watcombe, Oddicombe, Babbacombe, Anstey’s Cove, Meadfoot, Beacon Cove, Abbey Sands, Hollicombe, Preston Sands, Goodrington, Broadsands, Breakwater Beach and St. Mary’s Bay.

One of the great beauties of Torbay is its unspoilt coastline offering some breathtaking views. Along a 22 mile stretch, over 20 safe beaches and secluded coves compromise the aptly named English Riviera.

The English Riviera has some of the cleanest bathing waters in the country, scooping 14 awards last year, with 14 of our beaches also receiving

‘Recommended’ status by the Marine Conservation Society in their Good Beach Guide.

Torbay, as well as a popular family holiday resort, has, over recent years, become really popular with the diving community and many beaches are suitable as places to learn and for the more experienced diver you can enjoy more challenging wreck diving.

Adrenaline junkies will also be spoilt for choice when it comes to the many other activities at their disposal on Torbay’s beaches. From kitesurfing to wakeboarding and snorkelling to kayaking, there are plenty of thrills to go around. For a more relaxed and quintessentially British seaside

experience, there are plenty of beach huts and deck chairs to hire allowing you to settle into your beautiful surroundings.

The South West Coast Path is the Uk’s longest National Trail and stretches along the entire length of the English Riviera. A popular route is the 2.5 miles from Torquay Harbour to Daddyhole Plain, taking you past a number of landmarks including Beacon Cove, where Agatha Christie used to swim as a girl, and a naturally sculpted cliff arch known as London Bridge. Finally, after a climb to 200ft above sea level, you will reach Daddyhole Plain, a vantage point that allows you to gaze across the town and out to sea.

So, whether you’re after a place to lay out your towel, build a sandcastle, have a gentle paddle, explore a rock pool or just a quiet place to sit, you’re sure to find a beach to suit.

Our heritage stretches back an astonishing 400 million years, all the way beyond the Jurassic period ! Find out about our ancestors at the mysterious Kents Cavern, home to Europe’s oldest man. This spectacular attraction also stages underground concerts – a truly unique experience!

Agatha Christie, Queen of Crime, was born in Torquay in 1890, and you can follow in her footsteps by walking the Agatha Christie Mile in Torquay. Take a trip out to her beloved holiday home of Greenway, or visit the UK’s only dedicated Agatha Christie exhibition at Torquay Museum. Discover the Potent Plants Garden at Torre Abbey, which also happens to be the location of the hugely popular International Agatha Christie Festival.
