How to Decode a Classic Mustang's VIN & Data Plate If you ever consider looking at a classic Mustang and need to know about the car… across a great deal on a classic Mustang but wanted to know more about the car? Suppose the owner says the car came from the factory with a V8 engine and a Raven Black paint job. The car might have been created as a six-cylinder Mustang with a V8 replacement under the hood. Not to say he could be covering something up… could be the 2nd owner and doesn’t realize it had a 6-cylinder originally. Well, before you hand over your hard earned money, it’s a good idea to examine the Vehicle's Identifica-tion Number (VIN), as well as the Data Plate or Warranty Plate. In general, the VIN should appear on one, or more, of the following locations: • Engine Compartment on driver's side fender apron, under the fender

• Inside the Car where Windshield and Dash meet (Passenger side 1968, Driver’s Side 1969+) • Partial VIN Stamped on the Back of Original Engine Block (1968-1973) • Door Jam of Driver’s Side Door on Data Plate Chances are, the car you examine won’t have a VIN in each of these places. If you’re checking out a pre-1968 Mustang, you won’t find the number on the dash. If the car has undergone major restoration, it’s possible the door jam on the driver’s side of the car has been replaced. If you’re dealing with an engine, unless it’s an original, you won’t necessarily find the number. Even if it is original, you won’t find the number on pre-1968 Mustangs (1964 1/2- 67 K Codes are the exception). The most valuable find is the vehicle’s original data plate. This is located on the door jamb of driver’s side door. If you can find this you can determine the original color, trim style, date it was manufactured, DSO (District Sales Office) number, rear axle identification, and the vehicle’s transmission. Often the original data plate is missing, or does not match up with the vehicle you’re inspecting. For instance, if someone took a driver’s-side door jamb from one Mustang and put it onto the car you’re checking out, the VIN Number on the data plate will be different than the VIN under the hood or on the dash. Use good judg-ment when investigating a vehicle's history. If something doesn't seem to match up, dig deeper to find out why. Once you find the VIN number, it should look something like this: #6FO8A100005 This number tells a lot about the car. For instance, the 6 signifies a 1966 model year. The F tells me this was produced in Dearborn, and the 08 says this is a convertible. The A is my engine code. For this partic-ular year, we’re looking at a 289 cubic inch V8 engine. Finally the 100005 is your consecutive unit num-ber which describes the order in which this Mustang was built in the factory. For instance, a Mustang built early in the run would have a lower consecutive unit number than one built later in the year. This is all fine and dandy, but unless you’re an expert, you’re left with a bunch of numbers that mean little to nothing. That’s where a Mustang decoder comes in handy. There are a few online decoders that will decipher just about any classic Mustang VIN and Data Plate you have: MustangDecoder.Com (1965-1973 Mustangs) The 1964½ - 1973 Mustang VIN Decoder Page And not to be overlooked… 1982 - 2016 Mustang VIN Decoder Marti Auto Works: Validate Your Mustang VIN (1967-2007) Source: About.com

Ford's Shelby GT350 Mustang has returned. The iconic pony car, which first debut-ed back in 1965, made its official return at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show on November 17, 2014. Here are ten features that make this car special. 1. Most Powerful Naturally Aspirated Ford Production Engine Ever The new Shelby GT350 Mustang will produce more than 500 horsepower thanks to a unique, high-revving flat-plane crankshaft 5.2-liter V8 engine. Ford says it’s the most powerful naturally aspirated production engine the company has ever offered. 2. Extra-Stiff 19-inch Aluminum-Alloy Wheels The GT350 features extra-stiff 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels – 10.5 inches wide in front, 11.0 inches in the rear. The upgraded wheels ride on Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires with GT350-specific sidewall construction, tread face and compound. Ford says the custom tires are designed to deliver maximum grip on the road or at the track. 3. First-Ever Ford Application of Continuously Controlled MagneRide Dampers The new Shelby GT350 utilizes the first-ever Ford application of continuously controlled MagneRide dampers. Ford says the dampers are filled with a hydraulic fluid impregnated with iron particles; when an electric current is passed through the fluid, a near-instant adjustment of the suspension performance can be made. With wheel position sen-sors monitoring motion thousands of times per second combined with other vehicle data, changes can be made to each corner independently every 10 milliseconds for optimum handling performance. 4. Modified Aluminum Hood and Front Fascia The car features an aluminum hood that’s been lowered tightly wrapped around the engine for the smallest possible aerodynamic signature. Ford says the fascia has been resculpted to provide the aggressive lower front splitter with maximum pressure and a ducted belly pan delivers significant downforce. 5. Fully Functional Rear Diffuser The rear of the car features an aggressive functional diffuser designed to increase downforce and provide cooling air to the optional differential cooler. In addition, a subtle lip spoiler across the trailing edge of the decklid increases downforce without adding excess drag. 6. Recontoured Aluminum Front Fenders The car’s recontoured aluminum front fenders accommodate the wider front track and wider wheel arches. Front fender vents work with vented inner fenders to draw out turbulent air in the wheel wells and smoothly direct it down the side of the car. 7. Forward-Angled Grille The forward-angled grille is designed with individual openings to draw air through the radiator, high-pressure engine air intake, cooling ducts for the front brakes and, optional with the Track Pack, an engine oil cooler and a transmis-sion cooler. 8. Custom Recaro Sport Seats The car features specially designed Recaro sport seats with special cloth fabric. Ford says hundreds of hours and many prototypes went into a seat that is both comfortable in daily driving and capable on the track. 9. Flat Bottom Steering Wheel The GT350's flat-bottom steering wheel was designed to make it easier for the driver to get in and out, and is more ergonomic on the racetrack. 10. Upgraded Interior Gauges The GT350’s gauges have been upgraded to reflect the performance characteristics of the car. In addition, chrome and bright finishes have been reduced or eliminated to prevent sun glare that may distract the driver.

The Ford Bullitt MustangThe Ford Bullitt Mustang In 2001, Ford released the first special-edition Bullitt Mustang to commemorate the Steve McQueen movie, Bullitt, in which a Dark Highland Green 1968 Mustang GT 390raced through the streets of San Francisco. Seven years later, in 2008, Ford offered the next generation of Bullitt Mustang. The 2008 release coincided with the 40th Anniversary of the movie’s release in 1968. In all, the new Bullitt Mus-tang was more powerful, more modern, and more sought after than ever before. Key Features 315 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque Dark Highland Green or Black exterior Exhaust Note Engineered to Mimic Exhaust in the Movie Limited to 7,700 units (5,600 in 2008/2,100 in 2009) Bullitt's Power Plant The 2008 Bullitt Mustang featured a 4.6L, 3-valve V8 engine which was said to produce 315 hp at 6,000 rpm and 325 pound-feet of torque at 4,250 rpm. In addition, the engine had been calibrated to increase throttle response for a snappier acceleration feel. With a top-end speed of 151 MPH, and a redline set at 6,500, the Bullitt was definitely a mover and a shaker. In fact, Ford reported zero to 60 times drop by up to three tenths of a second over the Mustang GT. The 2008 Bullitt also featured the first use of an open-element air filter in a factory-produced, fuel-injected Mustang. The intake was placed behind the driver side headlamp, mounted in an air box that was tooled up spe-cifically for the Mustang. The hood liner was extensively modified to provide a full seal to the air box. Engineers further enhanced the Bullitt's performance by integrating an adaptive spark ignition system, new for the 2008 Mustang. According to Ford, the system can sense, within a few seconds, what type of fuel is being injected into

15

the motor and adjusts the spark to provide maximum torque at any given speed – and as much as 10 pounds-feet more between 1,000 and 4,000 rpm. The Bullitt could run on either regular or premium fuel, although Ford recommended premium fuel for top performance. Another key feature, special for the Bullitt, was a true dual-exhaust system with a new H-pipe design. The mufflers feature 3.5-inch chrome tips, which were ½ an inch larger than those found on standard GT Mustangs. The idea was to produce an exhaust note that sounded like the 1968 Mustang featured in the original Bullitt movie. Bullitt’s Exterior On the outside, the 2008 Bullitt Mustang featured a Dark Highland Green exterior paint job, resembling the Mustang GT in the Bullitt movie. Those looking for something a bit different could also choose an all-black exterior. To match the Bullitt movie Mustang, the 2008 Bullitt did not feature an exterior badges, scoops and spoilers. The only visible identification was the word "Bullitt" dropped into a gun-sight graphic in the center of the faux gas cap on the decklid. The Bullitt sported cast-aluminum Euroflange wheels complete with P235/50ZR 18 BF Goodrich g-Force T/A KDWS tires. These are the tires once used at the old Ford Racing High Performance Driving School at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah. Bullitt’s Interior On the inside, the 2008 Bullitt Mustang featured Charcoal Black leather and Satin metallic trim. The air vents and gauges were surrounded by Satin aluminum bezels, and the pedals featured aluminum co-vers. In addition, a satin aluminum shift ball replaced the standard leather-wrapped shifter found on the Mustang GT. In all, the only identifying marks visible inside Bullitt were the logo and gun-sight graphic mounted in the center of the leather-wrapped steering wheel and the word "Bullitt" embossed into the metal sill plates.
