MAVELANE residents cannot understand why their Peace Centre, completed two years ago, remains locked up and neglect- ed. The centre was built through a partner- ship between the Divine Life Society and Umvoti Municipality, as part of their man- date to serve and provide for the disadvan- taged through economic and social proj- ects. The Divine Life Society is a non–govern- mental, non–profit spiritual institution and has, over the past 55 years, served the needs of the disadvantaged and poor com- munities of KZN. Umvoti Municipality, in terms of the Mu- nicipal Systems and Structures Act, has a similar mandate and the two organisations have worked well together in the past to achieve such goals to the benefit of various communities. However, Alderman Hitla Maharaj, who represents the ward in which Mavelane falls, told the Greytown Gazette that the Peace Centre remains locked up, despite numerous requests to the Umvoti Munici- pal Manager for the keys to officially open the Centre. In terms of the signed memorandum of agreement by the two parties, a plaque commemorating the official opening is to be erected. Maharaj told the Greytown Gazette that despite ongoing requests to the municipal manager, as well as Umvoti's administra- tor, absolutely nothing has been done. The Mavelane community is understand- ably upset that there has been no action for two years and have had to watch the Centre deteriorate as grass and brambles take over. Despite the fact that there are legal obli- gations in terms of the memorandum of agreement, the municipality appears to be in breach of the signed agreement which could result in them being sued by Divine Life Society, resulting in more unnecessary costs for the ratepayers of Umvoti. PHOTO: SUPPLIED MURDER accused, teenager Claudius Chetty, was refused bail by Magistrate Bhekizitha Phoswa in the Pietermaritz- burg regional court last Friday and is to appear in court again today. Chetty, charged with stabbing 17–year old Rashmika Janthielayal of Greytown who was studying at FET College in North- dale, has pleaded not guilty. In refusing bail, Magistrate Phoswa said that the Prosecutor had been right in her submission that the administration of jus- tice demands not only to be on the side of the accused, but also of the victims. Phoswa said that Rashmika’s family were sick and traumatised too, referring to Chetty’s claim that his family was stressed and traumatised by his detention and that he had lost 46 kgs in prison. However a report from the prison MO, handed in by the State, indicated that Chetty was not suffering from any major health problems and had only lost 12,9 kg since his arrest. Investigating Officer Sergeant Sheldon Norman, testified that his main objection to bail being granted was concern for wit- nesses who had made statements, were known to the accused, and had expressed their fear of him. The Sergeant also told the court that pri- or to the murder, Chetty had run–ins with the victim and her parents, but would not stay away from her. Phoswa also queried whether Chetty would adhere to bail con- ditions if bail was granted. Murder accused refused bail

“UNTIL you pay R2500, yourelectricity stays off!”

This happened to a family liv-ing inablockof flatswithno ideawhere the individual meterswere placed, access to whichwas locked anyway.

But two ladies inblueoveralls, with no identification, guidedthe wife to the meters (each flathas an individual one) and said

“see you tampered with it – theseal is broken”.

The consumer denied anytamperingandqueriedhowshe,or any other tenants, knowwhich meter belonged to whichflat, which were impossible toaccess anyway.

The fact that dust and spiderwebs surrounded the meterswas disregarded.

But to no avail – the munici-pality says pay up or have nopower.

Any consumer who has beenforced to pay R2500 because ofso called tampering is asked tocontact the Greytown Gazettewith details.

Obviously illegal connectionsare not included in thisrequest!

It couldhappen toyou!

THERE has been no re-sponse from UmvotiMunicipality officials toa request from theGreytown Gazette forcomment on the theft ofcopper wire rolls fromthe Engineer’s Depart-ment.

According to informa-tion received, rolls valuedat thousands of randwerestolen in August after theservice of a privately con-tracted security companywas terminated and secu-rity was implemented “inhouse”.

Although there was acouncil meeting in Sep-tember, the theft was notreported and when infor-mation was requestedfrom Administrator Sit-hole, he told theGreytownGazette that the theft hadnot been reported tohim.

He referred the pressinquiry to the municipalmanager but to date, nocomment has been re-ceived.

Apparently a case oftheft has now beenopened with the Grey-town Police.

UMVOTI Fire Protection Association com-mittee has decided that due to the currentweather conditions being experienced inUmvoti, the authorisation to burn brush-woodwill only bedeterminedon1Novem-ber.

Weather conditions are monitored con-tinuously and there is a strong possibilitythat this current fire season may be ex-tended until more favourable weatherconditions are experienced.

An urgent appeal is made to all affectedto comply to avoid a re–occurrence of thedisastrous events of 2011.

BRUSHWOODBURNING

THIEVES, who obviously did notread the notice that these cam-eras do not work, removed over20 when they smashed a Grey-town Drugstore window in theearly hours of last Wednesday.

What they did not realise was

that these were all the good oldfashioned type – non–digital– which used rolls of film whichwere then processed.

But such rolls of films are nolonger produced and thereforethere is no retail processing.

So if anyone is offered a rangeof Olympus, Pentax, Konika,Halina, SLR etc – some of whichare over fifty years old – pleasecontact Greytown Drugstore orGreytown Police. A case of thefthas been opened.

“IT is with sadness that we will be saying goodbyeto the Norris family at the end of December whenthey leave for Cape Town. Andrew and Gayle havecontributed greatly to the advancement of Wem-bley over many years, remembering that they ar-rived at Wembley before the completion of theschool hall, and they have seen the success ofmany new facilities over the years.

Andrew is taking up the position of Principalat Blouberg International College which is a mem-ber of the ‘IES’ group.

The board of governors is particularly apprecia-tive of his great contribution to the educationof our scholars during his service as principal overthe past seven and a half years. On behalf ofall at Wembley College, we wish Andrew andGayle every happiness and success in their futurecareers and thank them for their contribution andservice to Wembley and our community over the

years.” Mr Brian Corbishley, chairman, Board ofGovernors.

The fourth and final term sees everyone backinto the swing of things with pupils in Form’s fiveand six (for some subjects) and four having al-ready started writing their AS and IGCSE examina-tions.

The rest of the school will start their internalexams on Monday, 18 November which is onlyfive weeks away!

PIGEON fanciers are a breed of their ownand the majority are good sportsmen, ready to shake your hand if you win.

My first experience of this was the occa-sion of winning my first ever race. At thattime, I was surrounded by pigeon fanciers, seven in all, everyone a top class fancierand every week, I was the last to clock.

About 30 minutes after my pigeon land-ed, all seven fanciers trooped into my yardtocongratulatemeonbeating them,as theyhad seen my bird drop.

Wonderful feeling and a show of truesportsmanship.LastweekImentionedcon-trol over ones birds.

One of my fellow fanciers used to openhis lofts at 7am for exercise, leaving hismother–in–law to call them in after a speci-fied time.

She would stand at the loft entrance, inher dressing gown, and ring a tea bell andthe birds would just about knock her overas they scrambled to get into the loft.

Another instance of a good lady fancierand control over ones birds!

Then there are the funny stories onehears. One that springs to mind is of thefancierwhohadan imported pairofbirds,of which hewas very proud, and invited sixof his closest fancier friends to view these

birds and their eggs they were incubating. The six men crowded into the loft pas-

sageway while he put his hand under thehen, only to find that an egg snake hadmadeameal of the eggs andwas still there!

In a panic, he threw the snake over hisshoulder and it happened to wrap itselfaround one of the necks of the spectators.

In a frenzy, all six fanciers headed for theexit, which happened to be closed. Theirblind panic and mob rush demolished thedoor as they gained entry into the open air.I think the snake got away after all that. Not so funnyat the time, but very laughablelater on.

ST Cathryn’s golfers who travelled down toDarnall on a cold, wet, windy and mistySunday morning had reason to feel downhearted.

It looked liked the weather was going tobeagainst them,liketheSharkshadexperi-enced the night before in Durban.

When the six St Cathryn’s members ar-rived, they found that the opposition teamswere also short – Mandeni had five playersand Darnall seven players.

Our team consisted of youth and experi-ence and this made for a well balancedteam.

AtDarnall, acart is recommendedso thatone can conquer the famous “Thromboses

hill”.This hole is a par five and for the heavy

or unfit, this can be testing for the heartrate.

Task at hand was to regain the trophy, and that is what these fine golfers did.

The Club won the day as can be seen inthe results and was also the winning clubfor the year as they won in February aswell.

Next round of the Triangular is to be playedin February 2014 at St Cathryn’s.

Results:First: St Cathryn’s – 31.5 pointsSecond: Darnall – 29.33 points

Third: Mandeni – 22.4 points.

Individual players results:First: Merwin Rabe – 38 points ocoSecond: Jimmy Rice ocoThird: Paul Els.

Next Farmers Agri–Care Monthly Mug willbe played on Saturday, 19 October. Golfersare reminded if medal play seems too daunting, play in the mug but play Individual Stableford. This Friday the club will be open for drinks –and if the Book club has anything to discuss theymay bring and braai. To book for golf and/or meals, please phone 083269 1661.
