SOME interesting facts about pansies andviolas.

As the idiom ‘shrinking violet’ suggests, violas are the smaller of the two, althoughit’s the Victorian meaning for viola whichrefers to “modesty” which gives a littlemore context to the idiom’s origin.

Pansy, on the other hand, means ‘tothink’.

Literature suggests this is from Victori-an references but also fromFrench origin.

The pansy flower has a striking likenessto ahuman face andhas a tendency to bowforward, in deep thought, in late summergiving it ample claim to its name, derivedfrom the French word pensée, meaning‘thought’.

From literature and arts to folklore andmythology,pansiesandviolashaveahisto-ry and story that could fill an entire book.Shakespeare used references to both pan-sies and violas in Hamlet and A Midsum-mer Night’s Dream, while the ancientGreeksusedviolas in lovepotions, thinkingit to be a symbol of love and fertility.

In the days of King Arthur, pansies wereused to tell fortunes for the Knights of theRound Table.

It is recordedthat theywould lookathowmany lines, and the orientation of, on thepetals to determine their fates. Four linessignified hope, seven indicated loyalty inlove, eight showed fickleness, and nineforewarned a changing of heart, whileeleven was sadly about disappointmentand an early grave. If the lines were thickandslanting left, lifewasdue tobe trouble-some while right slanting lines signifiedwealth and success until death.

Plant them in either a sunny or partiallyshaded area but keep in mind that violaswill perform better than pansies do withmore shade, so plan accordingly. Pansieswill withstand more severe cold than vio-las.

To get the best from your blooms, youshould deadhead them as and when youcan and remember that pansies are a littleclaustrophobic and may retaliate if youplant themtooclose toeachotherbydevel-oping diseases. Give thema good solidwa-tering once a week...water the surround-ing soil, avoiding their leaves. - Informa-tion supplied by the Bedding PlantGrowers Association.
