So who are they? Blink-182 is a pop punk band that although has been playing since 1993, did not reach any substantial success from their earlier works, until the album Enema of the State was released in 1999. The current lineup of Tom Delonge, Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker worked along with the producer Jerry Finn to create Enema of The State, and the album has sold 15.4 million units to date (Payne, ‘14).

Where did they come from? All three members of the band are from the sunny California suburbs. Tom Delonge and Mark Hoppus played together before being joined by the former drummer of the Aquabats, Travis Barker. While the band Blink-182 had been active for a number of years, it was not until the music video for What’s My Age Again that the world had the band on their radar. The video for What’s My Age Again featured the members of the band playing and running naked (important parts blurred of course) throughout the entirety of the music video.

After Enema of the State... Although Enema of the State had three hit singles in addition to “What’s My Age Again”- “All the Small Things” and “Adam’s Song”, the band’s success would not stop there. Their second album Take Off Your Pants and Jacket that was released in 2001 also had three commercially successful hits which included “The Rock Show”, “Stay Together for the Kids”, and “First Date”. Their self titled album was released in 2003 and the songs “I Miss You” and “Feeling This” did receive a fair amount of attention.

A few things in between

After the release of their self-titled album, the members of the band each pursued their own personal pet projects. Tom Delonge formed both the band Boxcar Racer and Angels and Airwaves. Travis Barker worked with Tim Armstrong from Rancid to form the Transplants. And both Travis Barker and Mark Hoppus worked together with +44.

Regardless of other projects the band members had going on, Blink-182 would not stay disbanded, and would eventually reunite to release the album Neighborhoods.

Neighborhoods Released in 2011 it is the last album to date that Blink-182 has recorded together. Jon Dolan from Rolling Stone remarked that the band’s more serious direction that was becoming clear on Blink-182 appeared to be continuing... “Do not expect to see Blink-182 streaking through the Nineties-nostalgia party…[While] Some Clinton-era pants-dropping might've been a fun nostalgia move...those days are gone” (Dolan, 9-27-2011). Two songs from Neighborhoods made it on the Billboard 100: “After Midnight” and “Up All Night”.

Musical Influences Pop Punk started in the late 70’s and was a reaction against corporate rock and soft pop songs. It is said to have been created to bring back a more raw sound with a pop melody to classic rock. Some of the key pioneers included the Clash, Sex Pistols, and the Ramones.
