Group Finance Director

Welcome to Sanctuary Housing

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for taking the time to consider what is a critical leadership role for Sanctuary. The information you are about to read has been prepared to provide further information about Sanctuary Group, our mission and values, the role of Group Finance Director and guide you through the selection process.

Our mission is to remain one of the UK’s market leaders in the provision of high quality housing, nursing and residential care, and community services for people in need. With over 100,000 homes already under management, a further 30,000 new homes planned, and the growth in our care and support services, we take our role in addressing the UK’s housing and social care challenges seriously.

The opportunities and challenges facing the UK’s housing sector more generally have never been greater. Brexit, increasing demographic pressure on housing and social care, deregulation, the impact of welfare reform and the rent reduction have contributed to a shifting landscape for social landlords. Organisations need strength and flexibility to thrive in this environment. I believe Sanctuary has that strength and flexibility combined with a bold ambition and sustained commitment to make a marked contribution to improving the provision of housing, care and support nationwide.

The role of Group Finance Director is at the heart of the Group’s success. With it comes lead responsibility for developing Sanctuary’s strategic business and financial planning, ensuring robust financial processes and systems are in place across the Group to support growth, and providing high quality performance information to facilitate effective decision making.

To be successful in the role you will need the first rate technical financial skills and the leadership and communication skills to influence and inspire at the highest level. You will have a record of proven success at finance director level in the oversight and delivery of high-quality financial and business critical services.

The sector you come from is of less importance than your skills and experience, but you will need to give assurance on scale and complexity for this role and it will help if you have operated in a regulated environment and within an effective risk management and compliance culture.

Equally important in what we do are the values we work to: ambition, diversity, integrity, quality and sustainability. They guide our decision making and show our customers and stakeholders what’s important to us.

If this role offers you the challenge you seek, and our values resonate with yours then I would welcome your application.

Best wishes,

Craig Moule

About Sanctuary Housing

“Providing good quality, affordable housing is at the heart of what we do.”

With more than 40 years’ experience and around 85,000 homes across England, Sanctuary Housing is one of the UK's leading social landlords.

As a not-for-profit organisation, we reinvest any surplus we make back into our housing and services, making our communities a place our residents are proud to call home.

We aim to provide an excellent, customer-friendly service. Our residents help us achieve this by challenging our performance and making suggestions about how we can improve.

We are a registered, exempt charity, which means instead of returning a profit to shareholders, every penny we make must be used to improve homes and services, and build new social housing. We are a housing association, which means we provide affordable, social housing for some of the poorest people in society. We own and manage more than 100,000 homes, and to help tackle the UK’s housing crisis we aspire to build 30,000 new homes. This will include a range of tenures to support more people into home ownership, as well as helping to meet the need for additional rented homes. As well as generating revenue through development, we have several other commercial business streams including over 100 care homes managed by Sanctuary Care, specialist and supported housing through Sanctuary Supported Living, our Sanctuary Students university accommodation and a telecare service called Sanctuary365. These business streams provide us with a surplus that helps us meet our charitable objectives and are at the core of why we exist: to ensure no-one is homeless and that everyone receives the care they need. Our residents are at the heart of what we do and we have a structure of resident involvement that places residents at the heart of shaping and scrutinising services. Our National Residents Scrutiny Panel is a formal panel responsible for monitoring Sanctuary’s performance against specific regulatory expectations. This has been independently accredited by an external consultancy organisation (Housing Quality Network) for its effectiveness. Tenants are members of the Group Housing Committee and able to both update on scrutiny and hold the Group formally to account. It is through this connection that scrutiny can demonstrate its influence on Group Board.

In 2017/2018, our turnover was £708.1 million and we expect to turnover £1 billion by 2020. Our 13,000 employees are motivated by our mission; and every day embody our shared values of ambition, diversity, integrity, quality and sustainability.

Our mission

Our mission is to remain a market leader in the provision of high-quality housing, nursing and residential care, and community services. When we were established in 1969, charitable objectives were written into our Rules and since that day our purpose has not changed – we are here to provide housing and services for people on low incomes, those in need of additional care and support, and the elderly. We believe no-one should be homeless. Everyone should have a decent home that they can afford and that meets their needs and circumstances. We believe care should be accessible to all who need it and should be delivered with dignity, respect and, above all, kindness.
