At the very heart of the holi-

day region of Gstaad there

is the proud tradition of

classic alpine farming –

with the cow, the Simmen-

tal breed in particular, at its

centre. There are some

7,000 cows – almost as

many as there are people in

the “Saanenland” – produ-

cing milk for such tasty

cheeses as the popular

Hobelkäse, and providing

meat as a delicacy. The au-

thenticity of the traditional

“Züglete”, the local name

for when the cattle are

driven up and down from

the alpine pastures every

year, has retained the

charm for which Gstaad is

renowned the world over.
