low-powered STX-3 Chipsetand LEO Simplex network.Globalstar and FindMyAnimalwill exhibit a variety ofsolutions for the farmingcommunity as they explore newways of using satellitetechnology to promotesustainability and businessefficiencies.

One of the highlights at theshow will be FindMyAnimal'ssatellite tracking animal collar, which are already being used totrack over 12,000 valuablesheep and cattle in Norway, monitor cattle in Brazil andendangered species in NorthAfrica.

FindMyAnimal's collar usesGlobalstar's satellite network togeo-fence livestock, helpingfarmers find animals that areclose to the edge of adesignated area or haveescaped. It also gives farmersthe opportunity to take a moreinformed and proactiveapproach to herding so that theylose fewer animals to predators. When it is apparent that a sheephas not moved in some time, the farmer is now able to sendherders to the exact location ofthe animal, saving valuabletime and resources. Farmersdeploying the collars havealready experienced asignificant reduction in thenumber of animals lost toillness or predators, which has adirect impact on their income.

Over time, theFindMyAnimal system providesa data trail based on trackingand analysis of patterns ofwhere the animals thatproduced the best quality meatwere grazing. The result isinvaluable information andinsight which can be used todetermine the best grazing areasfor future seasons.

With theopening up of this new market,Globalstar and its resellerpartners are eager to highlighttheir range of business-enhancing solutions for farmingand the agriculture industry inthe region. Solutions wellsuited for this market alsoinclude Globalstar's simplexM2M technology which can,for instance, notify farmersabout levels of water and feedsupply, potentially saving longjourneys to remote locations, and helping livestock stayhealthy, however far they roam.

At GFIA, Globalstar will beon hand at the FindMyAnimalstand to demonstrate how theirportfolio of products can helpkeep remote farming employeesand assets in contact even whenthey are beyond reach of themobile phone network.

“There are now manydifferent ways that farmers canuse technology to complementtheir traditional techniques, butwithout reliable communicationlinks, these can be ineffective.Satellite can be the missing partof the jigsaw to ensurecommunications are reliableeven in the most inhospitableenvironments. With theupcoming launch of our newBostswana gateway boostingour presence in Sub-SaharanAfrica, there are new

opportunities for the farmingindustry in the region to usesatellite communications tobetter manage its livestock, assets and employees,” saidGavan Murphy, Director ofMarketing at Globalstar.

Narrow track tractorsreport: on the wrong trackA technical study conducted bythe firm TRL for the EuropeanCommission is challenged byItalian manufacturers for themethod applies as well as forthe merit of the findings. Theanti-pollution devicesprescribed for Phase IV enginesare not compatible with thebodywork of the machines and, especially, staying in step withthe norm would require designchanges every three years.

The issue of narrow trackand high clearance tractors isfar from a settlement which

would be acceptable for themanufacturing industries. Theprospect of equipping T2tractors for vineyard andorchard operations with thedevices required for Phase IVhas become more than evercontroversial following therelease last December 18 of atechnical study by the Britishfirm Transport ResearchLaboratory, TRL,commissioned by the theEuropean Commission'sDirectorate General forEnterprise and Industry.

In substance, the report cameout in favor of substantialcompatibility of future Phase IVtractors and requirements foroperating in vineyards and fruitorchards, though recognizing adegree of “penalization” of the

performance of these tractors, to create the premise for theCommission to reject the requests of manufacturers toextend the terms for the application of the norm.

The judgment of Italian tractor manufacturersrepresented by Assotrattori, an association in the ItalianFederation of Agricultural Machinery Manufacturers,FederUnacoma, is that the TRL report contains errors ofmethod and incorrect assessments as regards merit andcarries the risk of putting the European Commission onthe wrong track -issues taken up this afternoon at a pressconference in Paris in a salon at the SIMA AgriculturalBusiness Show.

The manufacturers, in the first place, maintain that theTRL technical findings are based on a type of non-agricultural engine which can therefore not be comparedto the characteristics of engines for tractors, especially asregards technological solutions for anti-pollution devicesand thus differ from the devices of technological pollutionemission solutions.

In second place, the manufacturers do not share theexpectations, as expressed in the TRL report, that theengine industry can complete work on specific engines fornarrow track tractors to make it possible to apply the newnorms for the prescribed deadline. The Assotrattorimanufacturers are convinced that this idea is not realisticin light of the fact that the number of narrow tracktractors, some 20,000 units compared to millions in theautomotive sector, is too small for the engine industry togear up for ad hoc technological solutions.

And finally, the document suggests that an increase inthe profile of the machine as a consequence of compliancewith Phase IV can be partially offset by changing presentfarming methods of crop layout. These modificationswould damage farming enterprises and run counter to theEuropean Union policy guideline set in recent years withincentives for shrinking planting layouts for specializedcrops and driving manufacturers to turn out more compactand agile machinery.

FederUnacoma President Massimo Goldoni said, “Thefederation, and especially the Assotrattori Association withPresident Manlio Martilli, will soon return to Europeanquarters with their valid reasons for requesting a moreaccurate technical assessment as well as to challenge ageneral principle, that is, on the basis of which themanufacturers are required to frantically follow normsincompatible with economic logic and industrialplanning.” Goldoni went on to explain, “We are workingto modify machines for Phase IIIB which must be broughtin by the end of 2016 and we already have to worry aboutfurther transformations that will be necessary by 2019 forPhase IV and, by the end of 2022 for Phase V.”

The FederUnacoma president also observed, “Theserious risk is that the Commission is evaluating themanufacturers' interests with scant attention because they

refer to a relatively limitednumber of vehicles, withoutconsidering the extremelyheavy consequences in terms ofproduction and employmentwhich would fall on this sectorof mechanics withouteconomies of scale, a sectorwhich would lose importantmarket share weremanufacturers required to giveup the characteristics of theagility of compact machinesrequired by farmers.”

Goldoni concluded byaffirming, “The arrival on themarket of new specializedtractors, meaning a change ofthe tractor inventory, wouldlead paradoxically to apermanent inventory ofobsolete machines on farmswith a negative impact on the

environment to nullify the verypurposes for which the enginenorms have been launched.”

White House Garden Harvests Vitamin-ARich Orange Sweet PotatoThe sweet potato was chosen to highlight itsrole in improving the nutrition and health ofmillions of children and women throughoutsub-Saharan Africa.

For the first time, this year's crop in the U.S.White House kitchen garden included orangesweet potato (OSP), a root vegetable rich invitamin A, that is becoming popular in Africa. The sweet potato was chosen to highlight itsrole in improving the nutrition and health ofmillions of children and women throughoutsub-Saharan Africa by providing essentialvitamin A.

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is a majorpublic health problem in many countries. Itimpairs immunity, increases the risk ofillnesses such as diarrheal disease, andcauses eye damage that can lead toblindness and even death. Annually, up to500,000 preschool children go blind fromVAD, and about two-thirds will die withinmonths of going blind. In Africa, VADprevalence is estimated at 42 percentamong children under five.

The United States Agency for InternationalDevelopment (USAID) is now funding effortsto provide 285,000 Ugandan farminghouseholds not only with orange sweet potatobut also beans that are richer in iron, as partof the US Government's global hunger andfood security initiative, Feed the Future.

"Through Feed the Future, PresidentObama's landmark food security initiative, weare scaling up the use of orange sweetpotatoes in thousands of communitiesvulnerable to undernutrition and stunting,"said USAID Administrator Dr. Rajiv Shah."In the last year alone, we have helped sevenmillion farmers boost their harvests with newtechnologies like this, and reached 12.5million children to tackle undernutrition-one

of the leading contributors tochild death that also underminesglobal growth.”

Orange fruits and vegetables, dark leafy greens, and animalproducts are good sources ofvitamin A but are not alwaysavailable, or may be tooexpensive in some regions. Inmany part of sub-SaharanAfrica, people eat largeamounts of staple foods likesweet potatoes. However, thetypes commonly eaten are

yellow and white in color and apoor source of vitamin A. Theorange varieties are extremelyrich in vitamin A and have beenadapted to growing conditionsin Africa, and to local tastes. Inaddition to being a rich sourceof vitamin A, orange sweetpotato is also high yielding, virus resistant, and droughttolerant. In Africa, the crop isalso referred to as orange-fleshed sweet potato.

Farming communities in

Uganda, where orange sweetpotato is now being grown on alarge scale as a result of USGovernment assistance, havesubstituted more than one-thirdof their traditional white andyellow sweet potatoes withorange varieties. This hashelped to ensure that largenumbers of children and womenreceive their daily needs forvitamin A. One study found thatin these communities orangesweet potato contributed tomore than half of the vitamin Aintakes of young children aged6 months to 3 years old. This isnotable because the first 1,000days of a child's life, countedfrom the start of a woman'spregnancy until the child is twoyears old, is the most criticalperiod of growth anddevelopment. All it takes is oneice-cream scoop's worth oforange sweet potato to providea young child with his or herdaily vitamin A requirement.Farmers are also able to selltheir surplus crop to earn extraincome.

Agnes Amony, a Ugandanfarmer who is part of thisproject, says: “I began feedingmy child on these nutritiousfoods following the knowledgeI attained in the recommendedfeeding practices for childrenunder five. My child begangaining weight steadily and Iam in no doubt that these foodshave saved my child's life. I amforever grateful and will neverstop feeding my child on thesefood crops.”

In the mid-1990s, USAIDplayed a seminal role inconvincing agriculturalscientists that improving yieldsof staple food crops was notenough-they also had to makethem more nutritious. VitaminA-rich OSP emerged as one ofthe first nutritionally-enhanced-

IPM ESSEN REVIEW

IPM ESSEN was on coursefor success of seeminglyrecord proportions: For the

first time, 1,604 exhibitors from49 countries introduced theirinnovative products and servicesalong the entire value addedchain in horticulture at theworld's premier fair in 2015.Four days' long, everything onthe whole site at Messe Essenrevolved around the newestplant creations, improvedtechnology, trendy floristry andefficient marketing instrumentsfor the point of sale. FromJanuary 27 to 30, around 56,500trade visitors travelled to theRuhr metropolis. Thatrepresented seven percent more

guests from abroad than in 2014."We are looking back at one

of the most successful events inthe 33-years history of IPMESSEN. Never before have somany exhibitors introducedtheir innovations here as in2015 and never before did somany visitors come fromoutside Germany. Those aretop-class results," Oliver P.Kuhrt, CEO of Messe EssenGmbH, was pleased about theoutcome. At the beginning ofthe year, important stimulioriginated from IPM ESSEN.No other fair manages to bringthe protagonists in the sectortogether in such an exact-fittingand efficient way.

In 2015, IPM ESSEN wasonce again able to increase itsinternationality substantially. 43out of 100 visitors came fromabroad. This figure was still 36in 2014. With 83 percent, mostof them are at home in Europe. It was possible to record risesparticularly with regard to theguests at the fair from America(six percent of all visitors) andAsia (nine percent of allvisitors). Three quarters of thevisitors had purchasing andprocurement responsibilities. Arise could also be registered inrelation to the business dealsconcluded at the fair. More thana third placed orders for thecoming season.

What is the marketing/promotion model for solublefertilizer? Any difference against traditional fertilizer?Do you think the sales channel of seeds andagrochemicals can be shared with novel fertilizer?

Marketing/ promotion model for Novel FertilizersSoluble fertilizers are different from traditionalfertilizers. Solubles are more of concept sellingrather than product selling.

Soluble fertilizers are a good fit for Seeds andAgrochemical companies as marketing approach andproduct handling is similar to that required forsoluble fertilizers.

Which areas do you think will be the main marketsfor novel fertilizer? Do RNZ have any objects/plansin these area? The emerging economies who have challenges offeeding large populations from less land withlimitations of water & labour. South Asia, MiddleEast and Africa are one of fast growing markets inthe World for novel fertilizers. RNZ is proud to beassociated with innovative farmers on lookout forhigh efficient and effective novel fertilizers.

Could you summarize the standard you require fora distributor/partner to promote your products in anew market?

RNZ would like to have distributors/ partnerswho are keen to work on grass root levels, identify the actual needs and then proposeproducts which meet those specific needs. RNZ ispresently looking for like-minded distributorswho are committed to their markets on alongterm basis.

Conclusionso CreAMINO®

supplementation significantlyimproved hatchability and totalfertility of eggs in broilerbreeders and also theperformance of their progeny.o Based on the results of thistrial, a CreAMINO®

supplementation of 0.10 %optimized reproductive traits ofbroiler breeders as well as feedconversion ratio of their progeny.

Introduction and ObjectiveCreAMINO® is the innovativeform of guanidinoacetic acid(GAA) an amino acid derivativeand natural precursor of creatine.Creatine, known in the form ofcreatine monohydrate in athletes'nutrition plays a vital role in

energy metabolism, particularlyof muscle cells. Creatine issynthesized from GAA in theliver, which itself is synthesizedfrom arginine and glycine in thekidney. Creatine can be classifiedas conditionally essential nutrientas in fast growing animals thedemand cannot fully becompensated by de novo-synthesis. It is estimated that onethird of demand needs to besupplied from feed.

Broiler breeders (parents andgrandparents) commonlyreceive vegetable diets whichare free of creatine as plants donot contain creatine. Creatine isneeded by the animal for as areservoir of high-energyphosphate groups to assure theenergy supply (in the form ofATP) in muscle cells. Asvegetable diets supply nocreatine, and as stated above denovo synthesis only covers aproportion of this demand, supplementation with a creatinesource is indicated.

With regard to the embryodevelopment it is clear that it istotally dependent on the nutrientswhich are available in the egg atthe time of laying (Araujo et al.,1970). Eggs contain quite lowlevels of creatine (Ramirez et al.,1970 and Murakami et al., 2013)but during incubation thesynthesis of creatine steadilyincreases as indicated by anincreasing activity of the key-enzyme arginine-glycineamidinotranserase. This leads toan increasing creatine content inthe whole embryo and after 6days of incubation creatine canbe detected in the embryo(Ramirez et al., 1970). The de-

novo synthesis of creatinerequires arginine, glycine andenergy. Thus, the question arisesif the supplementation of acreatine source to breeder feedmight have an effect on theperformance of the parents, embryos and progeny as it mightrelieve the metabolism andenhance the cell's energytransport and buffering capacity.

Creatine and itsphosphorylated form, phosphocreatine, play animportant role for cellularenergy storage, buffering andtransport. In all living cellsadenosine tri-phosphate (ATP)is the universal energy currency.Phosphocreatine serves as adynamic reservoir of highenergy phosphate. It buffers theATP/ADP ratio in the cell fromrapid fluctuations that would bedeleterious to all energyconsuming functions of the cell. The chicken embryo is totallydependent on ATP synthesis tosupport the energy demandinggrowth and hatching process(Molenaar, 2010).

Research trials and Customerevaluations have consistentlyshown that CreAMINO®

significantly improves broilerperformance. However, there isa lack of information about theuse of CreAMINO® on theperformance of broiler breedersand its effect on their progeny. The aim of this trial, conductedat the University of Sao Paulo(Brazil) by Araujo andcoworkers was to investigatethe effect of CreAMINO® onthe reproductive traits of broilerbreeders and performance oftheir progenies.

MARCH APRIL 2015

Material and MethodsBreeder trialOne hundred and twenty broilerbreeders (Cobb 500) were used ina 10 week trial period between 50and 60 weeks of age. Birds wereallocated in a completelyrandomized design to 5 dietarytreatments supplemented withCreAMINO® at different levels(0.00 %, 0.04 %,

0.08 %, 0.12 % and 0.16 %),with six replicates per treatmentand four broiler breeders per pen.During the whole experimentalperiod, the broiler breedersreceived a diet based on corn andsoybean meal formulated to meetthe recommendations ofRostagnoet al. (2011).

CreAMINO® was added to thebasal diet (Table 1) replacing theinert. The different levels ofCreAMINO® are shown in Table2. The feed as mash was providedin grams per day following therecommendation of the CobbBreeder Management Guide.Hens were twice artificiallyinseminated in week 60 andsettable eggs were collected for a10-d period. The secondinsemination occurred 4 daysafter the first insemination.Semen was collected fromroosters (not fed withCreAMINO®) using theabdominal massage method.Semen was pooled and sperm cellconcentration determined toensure all hens were inseminatedwith the same number and volumeof sperm cells. Number of eggsplaced in the incubator according tothe different treatments: 125 (T1),121 (T2), 128 (T3), 128 (T4) and121 (T5). Egg production, fertility, hatchability of eggs and mortalityof embryo were evaluated. The datawere analyzed using the GLMprocedure form SAS (2009) and thesignificant differences amongtreatments were compared by theTukey's test. Pen was considered asreplicate.

Progeny trialThree hundred and sixty one-day old male broiler chickensoriginating from the broilerbreeders fed with differentlevels of CreAMINO® wereused. They were allocated in acompletely randomized designusing 5 treatments with 6replicates of 12 birds per pen, each. The diets for theprogenies (Table 3) were basedon corn and soybean meal, withno added CreAMINO® andformulated to meet therecommendation of Rostagnoetal. (2011). The feed (in mashform) and drinking water wereprovided ad libitum.Environmental conditionsduring the trial wereappropriated to the birdsfollowing breeder's

recommendation.Weight gain, feed intake and

feed conversion were calculatedfor the entire trial period (1 to 42days). At the end ofexperimental period, three birdsper pen with average pen weightwere selected to measure thecarcass yield, breast meat yieldand leg meat yield.

Results and DiscussionPerformance of broilerbreedersThere were no effects of thetreatments on egg production andembryo mortality. However, fertility (P < 0.07) and hatchability(P < 0.05) improved significantlywith increasing supplementationof CreAMINO (Table 4). Asupplementation of 0.08 % ofCreAMINO optimized fertility

and hatchability. Increasing thedietary level of CreAMINO® inquail feed resulted in a significantlinear increase (P < 0.05) of theGAA, creatine and creatininecontent of eggs (Murakami et al.,2013). This clearly shows thatGAA is successfully absorbed byquails and that there is a carry-over into the egg. GAA is usedto synthetize creatine which isindicated by the increasingcreatine levels in the eggs.Murakami et al. (2013) furtherreported that a CreAMINOsupplementation significantly (P< 0.05) improved the hatchabilityand fertility improved which iswell in line with the actual study.Even though the creatineconcentration in the eggs hasn'tbeen determined in this study, itcan be assumed that the

POULTRY

Page 33: Gulf agriculture march april

MARCH APRIL 2015

CreAMINO® supplementationincreased the creatine content inthe eggs and the utilization ofthis nutrient by embryosimproved the hatchability in thisstudy, too.

According to Molennar(2010), the bird embryo totallydependents on ATP synthesis tofulfill the energy demand duringthe growth and hatchingprocess. CreAMINO®, asprecursor of creatine, whensupplemented to the diet, increased the creatine content inthe egg contributing to the ATPavailability to meet the need ofthe embryonic metabolism andas consequence, CreAMINO®improvesthe hatchability.Ramirez et al (1970) showedthat the development of thechicken embryos during theincubation period has a need forcreatine. The authors found alow concentration of creatine inthe egg, indicating that thecontent of arginine and glycinein the egg and the activity of theenzyme arginine-glycineamidinotransferase can beimportant to synthesize creatinein the body of the chickenembryo in order to support itsdevelopment during the hatchingprocess. This result suggests that

the embryo might have a highenzymatic demand for creatinesynthesis in the presence ofarginine and glycine in the egg.

The improvement in fertilitywith increasingsupplementation might berelated to the fact that creatineis used by the spermatozoa.Creatine improves the flagellamotility and therewith itimproves the process of gainingaccess to the ovum (Lee et al.,1988 and Carneiro, 2011).Broiler breeders usually have ahigh aggregated value in thepoultry production chain. However, any factor that canincrease the number of broilerchicken produced will certainlyresult in higher profitability ofthe sector. The increase innumber of broiler chickens isconsidered an industry goal. However, the introduction ofnew nutritional technologies, for example, CreAMINO® inbroiler breeder feed, seems tobe of big interest to the sector.According to Araujo et al.(2010), several studies havebeen conducted to identifythose nutrients that provide bestproduction of eggs and alsobest egg hatchability. It is wellknown that the embryo

development depends on thenutrients deposited in the eggs. However, the result of this trialshow that CreAMINO®, aprecursor of creatine, might beclassified as a conditionalessential nutrient for broilerbreeders that are usually fedvegetable diets which are freeof any creatine source.

Performance and carcasscharacteristics of progenyAll progeny which originatedfrom broiler breeders which hadbeen fed diets with different levelsof CreAMINO® were fed thesame diets without CreAMINO®

during the whole trial.Nevertheless, CreAMINO®

supplementation of the parent'sfeed significantly (P < 0.05)improved the feed conversion ofthe progeny up to 0.08 %CreAMINO® in the diet (Table5). This result might be explainedby findings of Murakamiet al.(2013), where CreAMINO®

supplementation increased thecreatine content in eggs of meat-type quail breeders as well as thecreatine content in breast muscleof newborn progeny. Furthermore, myoblast fusion is essential formuscle development, postnatalgrowth and muscle repair after

POULTRY

3 1GULF AGRICULTURE

Page 34: Gulf agriculture march april

injury. O'Connor et al. (2008) showed that creatinetreatment enhanced cell fusion in a creatine kinase(CK)-dependent manner suggesting that ATPconsuming reactions are replenished through thePCr/CK system. The findings implicate roles forPCras high-energy phosphate buffer in the fusionof multiple cell types including muscle andsperm/oocyte. In conclusion this work showed thatmuscle development is enhanced in the presenceof increased PCr. Thus, one can hypothesize that inthis trial the increased levels of creatine in the eggmight have increased the myogenisis of theembryo resulting in more muscle cells at day ofhatch. This might partly explain the increasedFCR of the progeny as they might have had anincreased capacity for muscle growth. Whenexpressing the muscle weight (breast and legmeat yield) relative to the carcass weight (Table6), there is an increase with increasingCreAMINO® supplementation (59.4, 62.4, 61.2,60.5 and 61.4 %), which underpins theaforementioned assumptions. There was nodifference in feed intake and weight gain betweentreatments (Table 5).

There was also no significant difference incarcass characteristics (Table 6).

The world is demandingmore from farms.According to FAO's

latest projections, by 2050 theworld needs to produce 60%more food to feed a populationthat is expected to rise above 9billion.

“This evolution representstremendous challenges andopportunities for the Gulf area, where the demands onagriculture are rising at a fastpace, driven by growing foodconsumption trends andsustained by local governments'investments,” says MarcoRaimondo, Case IH's newBusiness Director for Africaand the Middle East. Thisrecent appointment is part ofthe undergoing evolution of thebrand that follows the creationof parent company CNHIndustrial N.V in September2013. Stepping up from hisprevious positions of MarketingDirector for Africa and the

Middle East and then SalesResponsible for East andCentral Africa, Raimondobrings to the new role front-lineexperience and deepunderstanding of the region.

“The pursuit of higherproductivity and the slow butsteady transition fromsubsistence farming todiversified agriculture aredriving the growth of theagricultural equipment sectorin our region, as confirmed bythe positive results weachieved in 2014," addsRaimondo.

Since its foundation in 1842in Racine (USA), Case IH hasbeen at the forefront of themechanization process and akey contributor to thetransformation of agriculture, gaining a worldwide leadershipin the agricultural equipmentindustry.

“Case IH is achievingimportant results in the Gulf

area where we have alreadyleading positions in the UnitedArab Emirates and where weare committed to further expandour presence in the near future,”Raimondo points out.

Equipment solutions forfarms of all sizesSpeaking about the company'sfuture plans within the region,Raimondo observes: “We intendto further strengthen ourcompany's position as a full-linerof agricultural equipment withnew product launches in 2015.”

Case IH is constantlyinvesting in farmingtechnologies and is able to

provide a complete line ofagricultural equipment to meetthe demands of a highlydiversified customer base.

“On the tractors side, unitsbelow 100 horsepower stillrepresent the most importantsegment in terms of volumesbut there are growing trends forbig tractors too,” saysRaimondo.

Case IH commercializes awide offering of tractors from55 to 608 hp, starting from theentry level JXT, JX Straddleand Farmall JX Series. Theseall-purpose tractors perfectlymatch the renowned Case IHquality with the robustness andthe ease of maintenance neededby small farmers. The company complementsits offering with a complete lineof balers, tillage and seedingequipment, hay and foragemachinery, sprayers, precisionfarming technologies as well asspecialized machines such ascotton pickers and the industry-leading Austoft® 8000 Seriessugarcane harvesters.

Scaling up agribusiness in the GulfThe Gulf's economicperformance over the lastdecade has been remarkableand, despite the fact that this isthe most water-scarce and dry

region in the world, agricultureplays an important role.

“In Saudi Arabia, theagricultural development hasbeen impressive,” addsRaimondo. “The country hashad the strength to convertlarge desert areas intocultivable land thanks to majorirrigation projects and largescale mechanization, implemented by thegovernment with the combinedeffort of the private sector. As aresult, the Kingdom of SaudiArabia can now declare to beself-sufficient in a number ofagricultural and dairyproducts.”

“In countries like Iraq, thegrowth expectations for theagricultural sector show bigpotential too,” says Raimondo.“At the same time, the scarcityof water and arable land inother areas of the ArabianPeninsula is pushing countriesto increasingly invest inagriculture overseas in order tosecure enough food for theirgrowing populations.”

As a geographicallydiversified manufacturer of

agricultural equipment with abroad network of dealers, CaseIH is able to provide customersin each market with equipment, technical support and servicesthat meet their specificrequirements.

Strengthening the networkAware that its success goeshand in hand with the selectionof the right local partner foreach country, Case IH isintensifying its distributionactivities.

At the Beauvais plant,Manon officially handed backthe tractor's keys to RichardMarkwell, Vice President andManaging Director MasseyFerguson Europe, Africa andMiddle-East, who hadpreviously presented them toher on 29 July, 2014. “We areall so proud of our tractor andthe incredible achievement ofManon and her Antarctica2team,” said Richard. “Ourwarmest congratulations ontheir courage and theirdetermination as well as, ofcourse, their belief in the

Massey Ferguson brand.Manon's challenge to us toaccompany her on herexpedition was one which wewere willing to accept andalways confident to win. Ourtractor had a job to do and itdelivered.”

“Employees here at MasseyFerguson along with a globalaudience of millions followedthe team's battle across the iceas news of their exploitsunfolded like an adventurestory each day. It was excitingand inspiring to see one of thetractors designed and built inthis factory making bothhistory and headlines aroundthe world.”

Thanking Massey Fergusonfor believing in her dream andsupporting the expedition withthe supply of the MF 5610,Manon said: “It's feels good todeliver the tractor safely backto its home. We drove it hardfor 28 days across 5000 kmand, overall, clocked up 760hours engine running time -that's more than many farmswould do in two years ofnormal work. Throughout, itwas strong, steady and sure - atribute to the MF staff whodesign and build the machineshere at Beauvais. Thank youfor letting me borrow yourbrilliant tractor!”

After ceremonies at the bothmain factory and the Beauvais2 cab assembly line, the tractormade its way under policeescort to the Beauvais TownHall plaza to be greeted byCaroline Cayeux, Mayor ofBeauvais

“I know I speak for all ourcitizens in Beauvais when I saythat we are brimming withpride to see a tractor producedhere reach the South Pole. What an accomplishment!” theMayor remarked. “Massey

Ferguson is an industrial icon inour City and the Antarctica2achievement is a true testimonyto the skills and knowhow ofthe employees at AGCOMassey Ferguson in Beauvais.Bravo and congratulations fromus all.”

AGCO's Beauvaismanufacturing facility is thelargest producer and exporter offarm machinery in France.Employing 2200 people, thefactory exports 85% ofproduction to 70 countries.Average annual output is16,500 tractors ranging from 80to 400 horsepower. The factoryhas recently been nominated byAGCO to produce a new rangeof tractors - the cab version ofthe MF Global Series - from2016 which will add anestimated further 2500 tractorsto its annual output. Since2010, more than 300 millioneuros have been invested at theplant to boost quality, productivity andcompetitiveness.

The 110hp MF 5610 usedon the South Pole trek is astandard farm tractor specially-prepared by Massey FergusonBeauvais engineers to addprotection against the freezingtemperatures and exposedterrain.

The Antarctica2 missiontook 17 days to reach theSouth Pole and 11 days toretrace its frozen tracks back tobase at Novo Runway on theAntarctic coast. Challenged bysome of the most ruggedterrain and hostile conditionson the planet, the punishingroute across the ice left thetractor and team battered, bruised but unbowed. Thetraverse took them throughdangerous crevasse fields, steep climbs and exceptionallydemanding surface conditions -

ranging from solid 'ice-waves'to deep soft snow. All this inan environment of constantbiting cold which, at one pointin the mountains at altitude of3400m, dropped to minus 56degrees C with wind chill.

Antarctica2 is the secondexpedition to the South Pole byMassey Ferguson tractor. Thefirst was undertaken byexplorer Sir Edmund Hillarywho successfully reached thePole in 1958 with a fleet ofspecially adapted FergusonTE20 tractors fitted with tracks.

Reaching the Pole on 9thDecember, the 2014 Antarctica2team reported their historicnews: “This is South 90 - as farSouth as anybody can go. It'sunbelievable - at the South Polethere is a red Massey Fergusontractor!”

Coir is a natural, andrenewable resourceproduced from mature

coconut husks. Coconut fiber isa coarse material obtained fromthe husk surrounding thecoconut seed.

RIOCOCO coir substrate

products originate from SriLanka, a beautiful Island in theIndian Ocean with millions ofcoconut trees. RIOCOCO coirsubstrate was introduced in2004, through many years ofextensive testing, research anddevelopment combined withcustomer feedbacks. Carefullyselected raw materials areblended together to producehighest quality coir substratesfor low, medium and high-techgreenhouse operations aroundthe world to grow variety ofhydroponics and none-hydroponics vegetables, flowers, herbs and many othertype of plants.

RIOCOCO coir islightweight and can becompressed into a variety ofshapes. RIOCOCO coir hasexcellent porosity and waterholding capacity, which can bechanged according to croprequirements by blendingdifferent grades of coir. It hasideal organic characteristics forgreenhouse plant production. It's a 100% organic,

controllable, renewable andrecyclable product.

Currently, tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, chilipeppers, egg plants andstrawberries are grownhydroponically in customblended RIOCOCO coirsubstrate. These productionsystems include low and high-tech greenhouses and nurserycontainer systems. RIOCOCOproducts consist of differentblends based on therequirements of specific croptypes and the duration of thecrop cycle. These custom mixeshave a well balance waterholding capacity and air filterporocity properties.

A major consideration ingrowing coir media is themethod of irrigation.RIOCOCO coir is also a moreforgiving medium. If the growermakes a small mistake withirrigating, visible effect in thecrop can be seen in any climate. With RIOCOCO however, itstill can easily correct beforeseeing a negative result in the

crop. RIOCOCO coir is alsovery low in electricalconductivity (EC) orconductivity factor (CF)comparable to other substrates.

There are no differences infertilization for plants grown inRIOCOCO coir productscompared to other growingmedia apart from the nutrientadjustments. Since RIOCOCOcoir holds water much betterthan other organic substrates, less water needs to be appliedand it is readily available to theplants. This is a very importerfactor in the greenhouses forthe Middle East region.

In general, during the summerdrain percentages of 20 to 30percent can be obtained. Duringthe winter, less water has to be

applied. A good method ofcontrolling irrigation is to use aweight scale and work with a drydown of 10% to 20% (percent) inthe coir slabs.

RIOCOCO coir slabs can beproduced at any length, width andheight to match any productionsystem and crop type. RIOCOCOcan also make special blends forany climate and greenhousecondition. For long term crops, animportant factors are theuniformity, consistency, controllability of the coir mix andthe stability of the plasticwrapping around the slabs.

When you take a closer look

at all of the coir that isavailable around the world, there are a lot of referencesamongst them. RIOCOCO wasone of the coir substrates thatreally expand out forconsistency, uniformity and theright mix for your greenhousetype.
