Dear parents and carers,

It was a wonderful day at Gunnedah South on Friday, as we celebrated our gorgeous

Grandparents! Over 400 parents, grandparents, great grand parents and visitors

joined us for open classrooms and the annual Grandparents Day Concert. Visitors

were treated to a drumming display during recess, led by Mrs McGuirk. To begin our

concert, the audience were very impressed by the stage two cultural group, who

performed a traditional dance and to close proceedings, we saw some very well

rehearsed folk dancing from some Yr4 classes.

It was really lovely to see the familiar faces that we once saw as parents, come

back to South as Grandparents. We feel honoured and privileged to be caring

and educating your grandchildren.

Visitors travelled from Tamworth, Quirindi and as far as Tenterfield and

Wellington to help make this occasion a happy and memorable one for all

involved. Thank you all so much for coming, and a big thank you to Mrs Maree

Lawrence and her helpers for their organisation of the day.

It was an outstanding effort from all the teachers and their classes, and once again

highlights what a remarkable school community we have, as every one of our students

was given the opportunity to perform in front of our visitors.

And they really loved it!

A special mention also to our very capable school captains, Toby Bartlett and Lucy Reid

for hosting the concert. This was Toby and Lucy’s first official duty as 2017 Captains and they did a superb

job.

What a wonderful end to the week.

Kind regards,

Nicki Walsh

Term 1 Working Bee

A HUGE thank you to all those who came along to the working bee on Saturday! Our gardens are looking

fantastic and some small painting jobs have been completed to freshened up the appearance of the

school.

We even had two of our Grandparents, who after Friday...obviously couldn’t stay away, so came to lend a

hand on Saturday. Thank you Jim and Tanya.

Although we thank every one who came, particular mention must go to Brad Newman, Ron Passfield,

Chris Barnes and Todd Jeffery. These fathers continued to work into the late afternoon to complete the

retaining wall between the demountable classrooms and the hall. It was a mammoth task and we so very

much appreciate your expertise and time.

This week in sport... Rugby League

Archie Stark is definitely a name to remember in the future! Archie was the only South

school student to make it into the Southern North West Rugby League team this year

and travelled to Tamworth on Friday to trial against Northern North West for a place

in the PSSA North West Rep side. On the day, Archie gave it his all and made it into

the possibles and probables, unfortunately just missing out on selection.

This was a great effort from Archie and we congratulate him on getting so far. Well done!

7s Rugby Gala Day

NSW Rugby Union development officer, Mr Gary Walsh

was extremely pleased with the turn out as well as the

hard work and commitment shown by our Rugby Union

sides last week at the 7s Gala Day. South school fielded

two sides and although they hadn’t much experience,

came away with 1st and 4th placing.

Player of the day must go to Ben Neale, who used speed,

handy footwork and sheer determination to score the

winning try against a more experienced St Xaviers side.

Regional finals for the 7s will be in Tamworth on 13th June.

Tennis

The school tennis team travelled to Narrabri on Friday to play

Narrabri West PS in the next round of the PSSA knockout

competition and came away with very convincing wins in all singles

and doubles matches. Thank you Mr Sumpter and your group of

dedicated parents who continue to travel and transport our tennis

team!

Congratulations to you all.

L to R: Mason Louis, Michael Walsh, Thomas Donaldson

Chloe Dorrington, Isabelle Moore, Ava Coleman

State Swimming Good luck to our swimmers who are off to Homebush for State Swimming this week. It is a great

accomplishment to be representing your school, zone and area at the Olympic Park Aquatic Centre.

Good luck to the senior boys’ relay team of Jedd Rennick, Cooper Williams, Michael Walsh and Angus

Waerea.

Best wishes to Nash Boal (50m freestyle), Liette Tindall (50m freestyle) and

Michael Walsh (50m breaststroke), who are all in individual events.

Particular mention goes to Cooper Williams, who is competing in 3 individual events (50m Freestyle, 50m butterfly and 50m Backstroke) and has just found

out this week that he has been selected in the North West Relay team.

All that training has certainly paid off!

Girls Cricket

I received this letter on Friday. It explains so eloquently the qualities learnt by being a part of a team;

encouraging others, speaking positively to one another and showing sportsmanship.

Mr McGuirk and members of the South Girls’ Cricket team, take a bow.

You are certainly great ambassadors for our school. We are proud of you!

Every performance at our Grandparents Day concert was fantastic and was personal in its own way to

each member of the audience This was made apparent by the amount of cameras and phones produced

to record that special moment.

This poem, written and read by one of our Year 6 students made me giggle; and no wonder, as Charlotte

has a great sense of humour.

Grandparents Day Poem

Charlotte Cooper

Grandma, her name is Lyn,

She married my Grandpa,

His name is Jim.

Rain, a gift from above,

My papa is a farmer,

This is something he loves.

Alec, that’s my Great Grandfather’s name,

He and my Nanny Beryl,

Are still in the game.

Nan, her name is Glenda,

And her tomato relish,

Is something of a splendour.

Driving, in a tractor or a ute,

We do this with papa,

It is such a hoot!

Poppy, he is a star,

He even drives

A cool blue car.

Ageing, they are getting older its true,

But the same can be said,

For me and for you.

Racing, horses I mean,

My poppy is an expert,

Take it from me.

Eating, Grandma’s yummy food,

Christmas is the best,

Let me tell you.

Nature, sleeping in the rooftop tent,

With Papa and Grandma,

Great times I have spent.

Treasured memories, of good times we’ve had

And the chance to make more ,

For this I am so glad.

Spoilt, so lucky, so blessed

To have six grandparents

Who are THE BEST!

Dear Parents and Carers,

If you need to change your child’s routine in the afternoon, please notify the school before 2.30pm, no later. This is a very busy time for us and we appreciate

your assistance with this matter.

Please understand that we are unable to take items to, run messages, or

go to collect your child from their classroom.

If you are collecting your child early, you should come to the office, sign your child out and obtain a early leaver slip. The slip is then handed to

the teacher when you collect your child from their classroom.

Please make sure that your address, phone number, emergency contacts,

email address and medical details are up to date with the office.

Thank you.
