about usHabitat for Humanity Australia is part of Habitat for Humanity, an international not-for-profitwhich originated in Georgia, United States in 1976. Habitat for Humanity began as a grassrootseffort driven by the vision of a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. Thehousing organisation has since grown to become a leading global non-profit working in morethan 70 countries. Since then it has been our mission to build strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter.

Worldwide, Habitat has helped more than 35 million people access safe and decent housing, along with access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene and livelihood training to build better lives.Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families build a better tomorrow, today.

Through shelter, we empower.

At Habitat for Humanity Australia,we believe a stable, secure homecreates the foundation for change.

A safe home gives people theopportunity to be healthier, happierand more secure, and for childrento be better nourished and bettereducated. We believe building a

decent home provides much morethan bricks and mortar – it provides

real hope for the future.

Building a house for one family, changes the lives of so many

more. We can build a house for anentire family for AUD$3,000-$5,000

in the Asia-Pacific.

We not only build homes, we buildcommunities. We address water supplyand sanitation issues and in somecommunities provide health andeducational services – like teachingfinancial literacy and livelihood training. Thisis vital knowledge communities can sharewith others. It’s a ‘pay it forward’ model andthe beginning of generational change.

about us

Habitat believes that new and improvedhomes are intricately tied to betteropportunities for families. Children havequiet places to study. Families no longerface illnesses and disease brought on byunhealthy housing. Parents experiencethe financial freedom that comes fromhaving an affordable place to live. Thesefactors help break the cycle ofgenerational poverty.

Habitat for Humanity knows that adecent, affordable place to live cancreate a situation where homeownerssave more, invest in education, pursueopportunity and have more financialstability.

Living in a decent, affordable homethey’ve helped build or improve means ahomeowner is better positioned to have ahealthier, more financially stable life, onewith fewer barriers to health, safety andopportunity.

the need foraffordable housing

90% of cities around the world do notprovide affordable housing of adequatequality, according to the World EconomicForum (Habitat Magazine, September 2019).

The World Health Organisation says thoseliving in poor conditions “are exposed togreater personal and environmental healthrisks, are less well nourished, have lessinformation and are less able to access healthcare, thus they have a higher risk of illnessand disability”.

The United Nations estimates that 1 billionpeople around the world live in informalsettlements, and 600 million more do nothave adequate housing

Over a million households inAustralia are paying more than30% of their income on housing (Definition of Housing Stress,ABS 2019).

Currently, we have 4% social andaffordable housing acrossAustralia.

There is a lack of investment insocial and affordable housing andnot-for-profits and communityhousing providers are increasingtheir role in delivering this service.
