Hadassah Greater Miami Upcoming Events
President’s Message Shalom to Members and Associates of Hadassah Greater Miami,
I write this article as we just finished celebrating the joyous holiday of Purim and now we are preparing for the upcoming holiday of Passover where we celebrate leaving Egypt as slaves and becoming a free Nation.
Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America also has much to celebrate:
We are celebrating this year the 100th Year of our School of Nursing, the 100th Year of our School of
Ophthalmology, the 100th Year of Hadassah Medical Organization and the 70th Year of the State of Israel. We
will be celebrating with Missions to Israel throughout the year culminating in our October Milestone Mission
with a special track for Nurses. We have our Celebration 2018 Conference this May, where we will turn our
Passion into Action by advocating at our Capitol. Please join us. There is strength in numbers. Please register
to be a Hadassah Advocate on our website Hadassh.org/advocacy and join us for our local Days in the
District organized by Dr. Judith Berson Levinson. Please contact her at [email protected] if you want to join
us in making your voice heard.
Be part of our Celebration 2018! Turn your Passion into Action! There is so much that has happened in our
Region this year. I attended our National Assembly meetings in L.A. in January with several of our Region’s
Hadassah National Leaders. As Region President, I sit on the Camp Judaea Board and had the great pleasure
to announce that our Region won an extra scholarship for our local campers for raising the most scholarship
money per member per Region for Young Judaea. As part of Hadassah Celebration 2018, Freda DeKeyser
Ganz, Ph.D. was our featured speaker on our phenomenal Nurses Tour in January at four venues in our
Region.
Esther Bleiweiss and Marta Olchyk arranged Hadassah Shabbat Zachor at various Temples in our Region and
the Hadassah Greater Miami Lecture Series. I spoke at Temple Menorah for Hadassah Shabbat Zachor with
Hadassah Life Member Judge Ileana Torreh Bayouh and Esther Bleiweiss spoke at Temple Sinai and Temple
Emanuel.
All of our Chapters, Kulanu B’Yachad, are having important and exciting events raising funds to renovate our iconic Round Building and our Research in Service to Humanity Campaign. Please support our Region’s and Chapters’ events and the important work our volunteers are doing! Thank you and Yasher Koach to my Boards and all of our Hadassah volunteers and donors! Kol HaKavod to the important work you are doing!! Please contact me to join us as a volunteer in the amazing work we are doing!
I hope you will join us on our Missions, in our Advocacy and at our Hadassah Celebration Conference in Washington DC this May! Please contact me for more information.
Kulanu B’Yachad, we together will continue the sacred lifesaving work of Hadassah.
Wishing you all a meaningful Passover!

Hadassah Research
Texas Tropical Disease Expert Meets with Hadassah Infectious
Disease Specialists
Dr. Peter Jay Hotez, renowned professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Molecular Virology and Microbiology at Houston (Texas) Baylor College of Medicine and Dean of its National School of Tropical Medicine, met with two Hadassah Medical Organization infectious disease specialists to discuss regional cooperation in fighting tropical diseases, such as the now-infamous Zika virus and leishmaniosis, which is contracted from sand flies.
The Hadassah specialists are Prof. Allon Moses, Director of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, and Prof. Dana Wolf, head of Hadassah’s Clinical Virology Unit and Specialist in Infectious Diseases. Dr. Wolf, a world-renowned specialist in viruses and the damage they can cause to fetuses, recently opened a new laboratory dedicated to defeating Zika. Under her leadership, the Clinical Virology Unit at Hadassah has been recognized as a National World Health Organization Collaboration Center.
Dr. Hotez, who was visiting Hadassah as part of his trip to Israel hosted by the United States Embassy, was accompanied by Prof. Avi Israeli, head of the Department of Health Policy, Health Care Management, and Health Economics at the Hebrew University-Hadassah Faculty of Medicine.

Hadassah Physicians Travel to Mexico to Repair Cleft Palates
In early March, a team of Hadassah Medical Organization physicians performed surgery on children with cleft palates in Mexico. This is a part of the continuing impact that Hadassah is having on health care in Mexico.

Hadassah, internationally known for its excellence in medicine and wellness, believes that medicine can and should be a bridge of solidarity, healing, and well-being for all peoples. Because of its outstanding reputation, a Mexican doctor, Raúl Esparza, traveled to Israel to specialize in plastic surgery at Hadassah.
The Hadassah University Medical Center in Jerusalem, with its two highly complex hospitals, is internationally recognized as one of the most advanced in the world in research, healing and teaching. Because of this outstanding reputation, a Mexican doctor, Raúl Esparza, traveled to Israel to specialize in plastic surgery at the Hadassah Hospital.
Ethel Fainstein, Director of Hadassah Mexico, helped organize the visit. “This is a perfect example of the impact that Hadassah and its staff have on the world and on the Mexican people,” she said.

David Ben Gurion asked Hadassah to build a new, modern medical center in West Jerusalem that would be the finest in the Middle East. In June, 1961, a magnificent hill of healing opened in Ein Kerem overlooking the majestic Judean hills. The centerpiece of the campus was the Round Building. Our mothers, grandmothers, aunts and many, many others built this incredible medical center, and now it our turn to expand and modernize it.
Hadassah Greater Miami has pledged $36,000 to the Full Circle Campaign for the renovation of the Round Building. This is the first phase of Hadassah’s vision to reimagine the Ein Kerem Campus and HMO. It’s about compassion; it’s about healing; it’s about life; it’s also about a 360 degree vision in a changing world.
Please join us in our commitment to healing tomorrow. By purchasing an Endless Beginnings necklace, you will ensure that Hadassah is at the forefront of health care innovation.

Renovation of the ‘Round’ Inpatient Building A major capital project for Hadassah’s flagship Ein Kerem campus
The Round Building at Hadassah Medical Center is the original inpatient building at Ein Kerem and has been in continuous use since 1961. Now operating as an outpatient clinic, it serves as a bridge to peace and is considered the bellwether for exemplary patient care in a volatile
region. Despite this, it has become structurally deficient. Much of its technology is obsolete and its aging façade needs repair.
It is time to renovate the Round Building. Hadassah has always prided itself on being a medical pioneer and leader in research, clinical care, and humanitarian efforts in Israel. To take Hadassah Medical Center into the next generation and continue its tradition of setting the standard for patient services in the Middle East, we must now dedicate specific funds to revitalize the Round Building.
We look forward to partnering with you in support of this worthy project. Together, let’s make sure that the citizens of Israel continue to receive the best and most advanced health care available today.
Contact Susan Levin-Abir at 224-848-1809 or [email protected] to make your contribution of $5,000 or more to the Round Building .
