Karpagam Charity Trust was founded in the year 1989 with the aim of providing excellent

educational facilities by imparting practical training knowledge and skills to the youth of

the area and also catering to the needs of the society in general through charitabledeeds. The Karpagam Arts and Science College (Autonomous) was evolved into

Karpagam Academy of Higher Education in the year 2008 for the purpose of conferment

of Deemed to be University status by Ministry of Human Resource Development vide

its order No. F.9.24/2004.U.3 (A) dated 25.08.08. The UGC through its Joint

Committee (UGC AICTE) approved the Faculty of Engineering vide No. F6-

93/2004 (CPP-1) in September, 2009, Council of Architecture vide Order

No.CA/5/Academic TN19 dated June 22, 2009, approved B.Arch. and Distance

Education Council Joint Committee approved vide Order No. DEC/Recog./2009

dated09.09.2009, approved courses under Distance Education mode.

The University Education, in today's scenario, is witnessing a huge paradigm shift and

at Karpagam, we are geared to be a part of that transformation. Our evolution into a

University of world standards has been possible only by a consistent endeavour to

achieve excellence in education. We work towards ensuring that our students too strive

relentlessly to excel in their efforts. Be it Arts or Science, Commerce or Management,

Humanities or Engineering, we ensure that our education epitomizes excellence in

every sphere. Launched six years ago, Karpagam Academy of Higher Education

prepares students to take on the challenges of the day and become the next generationleaders. Our students have opportunities to interact with faculty, develop their own

INFRASTRUCTURE

LibraryThe Library is well stacked with 82,972books. A good collection of reference materials suchas Encyclopaedias, Dictionaries, Directories and Year Books help the users in finding theneeded information expeditiously. The Library subscribes National and International journals(226)and magazines (193). The Library also maintains bound volumes of Journals (10,724)

and Project Reports and Dissertations (9,796)apart from files of Newspaper clippings, Annualreports, Conference proceedings and Question papers of previous years.The Library has 2307 CDs, 18 Audio cassettes and subscribes the following OnlineDatabases: IEEE, ASME, J Gate and Nature and Science. Forty computers are available inLibrary and LAN, Internet and e-mail services are offered to the staff and students. The libraryis a member of DELNET and INFLIBNET.The Library is fully computerized (web based) and the entire gamut of operations such as

Acquisition, Cataloguing and Circulation are automated. Issue and return transactions aredone using bar code technology. The traditional catalogue cards are replaced by OPAC,which helps the users in getting information about the availability of books through a numberof access points such as author title or part of a title subject and accession number and so on.SportsThe University promotes various sports activities for the students. The management alsoprovides Sports Quota for students excelling in certain disciplines. Two Physical FitnessCentres (Gym), Human Performance Laboratory, 400 m track, Hockey Field, Football court,Hand ball court, Volley ball complex, Basketball court, Kabadi courts, two indoor badmintoncourts, one indoor table tennis court with 3 tables are established. Martial Arts likeSilambam & Karate are taught to our students.NSS UnitThe National Service Scheme was started in our University during 1996 (Karpagam Arts andScience College) with a sanction of one unit. Another unit was sanctioned in the academicyear 2002-2003.The third unit was introduced in 2004-05. Every year a special camp isconducted for 10 days in the nearby villages for each unit separately. Many programmes like

eye camps, blood donation camps, AIDS awareness camps and guest lectures areconducted. Necessary steps have been taken to inculcate among the students the dignity oflabour and the importance of social service having in mind the need for societal development.The main aim of NSS are self-discipline, hard work and the feeling of oneness withthe poor and the down trodden.NCC UnitNational Cadet Corps (NCC) Women Wing started from the academic year (2013 14) with asanctioned strength of one Unit. Regular parades and camps are being conducted. NCC BoysWing was started in January 2014. Within a short span our cadets attended many All Indialevel Camps held at different parts of India and won many laurels to the University.Computer FacilityThe University has 22 Computer labs for students' regular academics and 6 research labs.

Computers are provided for faculty, Digital Library and Administration. Totally there are 1565computers in the campus. 42 Servers have been provided. All the blocks are interlinked withfibre optic backbone. The network is provided with Firewall. For internet connection NationalKnowledge Network (NKN) connectivity by BSNL of 1 Gbps shared link and Airtel 45 Mbps 1:1leased line are available.The University has Microsoft campus license agreement Also liberal use of open sourcesoftwares are made. Special purpose software CADENCE VLSI tools, ETAP, ANSYS, SOLIDWORKS, AUTOCAD etc are also used.LaboratoriesThe University has 80 laboratories to cater to the needs of students.

Internet

Airtel 45 Mbps dedicated leased line and 100 Mbps share based line with BSNL Internet facilityunder NMEICT Project supported by MHRD, New Delhi (Lr. No. AGM (EB) / 1 GBNMEICT/2010-11/83 dated 13.12.2011), providing online service for students and staff areavailable in our University for 24 hrs. The campus has Wifi connectivity.

The Life Science Departments (Microbiology, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Biochemistry)have all laboratories, with instrumentation rooms, which provide opportunities for students to

carry out research in the modern trends and, an animal house approved by the Government ofIndia. (Vide No.739/03/abc/CPCSEA dated 03.03.2003).

The Basic and Applied Sciences stream (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Electronicand Communication Systems) have well equipped laboratories.

The Faculty of Engineering has 50 laboratories with latest software for modeling andsimulation, testing and measuring equipments and special instruments for research. Roboticsand Automation Lab is fully equipped. New research laboratories have been added in most ofthe departments.

The Faculty of Architecture is established with computer lab, dedicated library and twodrawing studios, Lecture halls with audio visual facilities.

The Karpagam University Instrumentation Centre (KUIC) established in 2010 caters to theneeds of all research students. Regular training programme in instrumentation techniques areorganized.

Academic Staff College

The Academic Staff College aims in upgrading the knowledge, enhancing skills andimproving quality of teaching of university teachers. The orientation courses expose thefreshly recruited faculty towards the art of teaching and to achieve goals of education.The Refresher course is given to faculty with the latest development in their respectivedisciplines.

Counselling for Students

To help the students to overcome certain difficulties, both personal and academic, studentscounseling and guidance services are provided by the University.Professionally trained fulltime counselors are appointed to offer counseling services.

Career Development and Corporate RelationDepartment of Career and Corporate Relation is constituted to educate students on the HigherEducation in India and abroad. The students are provided with assistance on careerdevelopment and training is offered at the corporate level/

Placement and Training

The Department of Placement and Training in the University campus provides corporate, needbased training to the students to equip them with skills necessary to get placed. The trainingmodules cover Aptitude training, Communicative English, Technical Training and Personality

Development programmes which start from firstyear onwards. Training is conducted by theexperienced staff of the University as well as by outside professionals. The training helps thestudents to get placed in leading companies. On campus interviews are conducted and the

university has an excellent track record of placement for all departments.Research

The University encourages research. The moulding of character is at the top of the agenda and since the behaviour of the

students will make the reputation of the institution, the students are advised to

scrupulously abide by the following rules and regulations.

It is mandatory for all the students to possess their identity card always duly attested

by the Registrar. Identity cards will be issued to the students soon after their

admission into the University. The students have to produce the ID Cards on

demand by the authorities of the University. The possession of identity cards is all

the more essential at the time of Examinations.

RAGGING

As per the UGC regulations on curbing the Menace of Ragging in Higher Education

Institution, 2009 (Under Section 26(1) (g) of the UGC Act, 1956) and Tamil Nadu

Prohibition of Ragging Act 1997, Ragging means display of noisy, disorderly

conduct of doing any act which causes or is likely to cause physical or psychological

harm or raise apprehension or fear or shame or embarrassment to a student in any

educational institution and includes (a) teasing, abusing of, playing practical jokes

on, or causing hurt to such student or (b) asking a student to do any act or perform

something which such student will not, in the ordinary course, willingly do. The Act

prohibits ragging within or outside any educational institution. Whoever directly or

indirectly commits, participates, abets or propagates ragging shall be

punished with imprisonment for a term, which may extend to THREE years

and shall be liable to a fine, which may extend to Rs.25,000/-Any student convicted of an offence under the section 4 of Tamilnadu Prohibition

of Ragging Act 1997 shall also be dismissed from the educational institution and

such student shall not be admitted in any other educational institution. The decision

of the Board of Management shall be final.

BEHAVIOUR

It is imperative on the part of the students to attend the classes, functions

and any other extra and co-curricular activities regularly and punctually.

Students are expected to dress neatly and to follow the approved dresscode. Girls are expected to be either in saree or in churidhar or in salwarkameez with duppatta.

Boys are expected to come in full pants with bush shirt. Round neck T-

shirt with or without any message, Jeans and Short shirts are not allowed.

Boys shall not wear ear rings, bangles or similar items. Girl students shall

tie their hair properly.

The students shall wear the ID cards. Without ID cards, they shall not be allowed

inside class room and examination hall.

Students must occupy their seats in the respective classes well before the

faculty enter the classes. When a faculty enters the class, the students shall

stand up in their places as a mark of respect.

Latecomers will not be permitted inside the classroom without the permissionslip from the Head of the Department concerned or the Dean concerned.

Students should not absent themselves from the University without applying for

leave. Those students who could not attend classes on medical grounds must

produce a medical certificate along with the leave letter.

Smoking is strictly prohibited inside the campus. Students found using

intoxicants and drugs will be summarily dismissed. In case of cancellation of a

class, students shall be in the library.

Students should refrain from participating in any kind of political or communalactivities.

Students found guilty of damaging, destroying University property should

replace the same at their own cost. Students should not sit on the parapet walls

or on the steps or staircases.

Students found guilty of writing, scribbling, painting on the walls, desks etc., will

be penalized suitably with fine. Students must identify those who cause

damage to the University property and report to the Registrar.

Outsiders will not be permitted to meet the students during working hours.

Students found guilty of using foul language or behaving rudely towards the staff

members, will be expelled from the University.

Any requisition or letter written by the student to the Registrar should be sent

through the tutor, the H O D and the Dean concerned.

Eve-teasers will be dismissed from the University.

During the working hours of the University keeping and/or using the cell

phone inside the University campus is prohibited. The cell phone will be

confiscated if found in use and is returned only after the completion of the

course. Hostelers are permitted to use the cell phone within the hostel

premises before or after the silent hours.

FEE REGULATIONS

In an academic year, payment of fees is Annual for Engineering and Architecture

students and semester for Arts, Science, Commerce and Management

students.

1. Every student is liable to pay the whole fees for each year / semester.

The fees should be paid within the indicated date.

2. Students who do not pay the fees on or before the last date indicated

shall pay a fine as may be imposed by the University.

SEMESTER

The first semester commences from the reopening of the University in June, after

the summer vacation and continues till the end of November. The second semester

commences from the middle of December and extends to the end of April.

ATTENDANCE

Attendance shall be considered semester wise (not annually).

a. A candidate will be permitted to take the University Examination of

any semester, if

i) The candidate secures not less than 75% of attendance during thesemester and

ii) The conduct of the candidate has been satisfactory

genuineness of the case before recommending to the Dean.

Hospitalisation / Sickness to be informed immediately at the time

itself and not at the end of the semester or year to avail the10%

condonation for medical reasons.

b. A candidate who has secured attendance between 74% and 65%

(both included), due to medical reasons (Hospitalization / Accident /

Specific Illness) or (due to participation in University / District / State /

National / International level sports or due to participation in Seminar /

Conference / Workshop / Training Programme / Voluntary Service /

Extension activities or similar programmes with a prior permission

taken from the Registrar) shall be exempted from the above

prescribed requirements for attendance requirements and shall be

permitted to take the examination on the recommendation of the

Head of the Department concerned and Dean to condone the lack of

attendance. The Head of the Department has to verify and certify the

c. A candidate who has secured less than 65% of attendance in any semester willnot be permitted to take the regular examination and to continue the study in thesubsequent semester. The candidate has to redo the course by rejoining thesemester in which the attendance is less than 65% with proper approval of theRegistrar. However, he is permitted to write arrears if any.

ON DUTY ATTENDANCE

1. Students involved in Co & Extra-Curricular activities and hence missing

regular classes should contact the respective authorities (Physical

Director / NCC Officer / NSS Officers / HODs / Faculty-in-charge through

the Dean for various activities) who will recommend the case to the

Registrar for attendance within four working days. After four working days,

the request will not be considered.

2. Students must obtain written permission from the Registrar before

undertaking these activities, and on completion of the activities, they must

submit an application along with the attendance certificate to the

Registrar through the Dean to claim the on duty attendance.

PASSING REQUIREMENTPassing minimum : The passing minimum for CIA is 20 (i.e. out of 40 marks). Thepassing minimum for End Semester Examination is 30 (i.e. out of 60 marks). The overallpassing minimum for theory/laboratory course is 50 (Sum of his / her score in internaland external examination) out of 100 marks.If the candidate fails to secure a pass in a particular course inESE, it is mandatory thatcandidate shall register and reappear for the examination in that course during the

subsequent semester when examination is conducted in that course or in thesupplementary examinations conducted. GRADE SHEET

After the declaration of the results, Grade Sheets will be issued to each studentwhich will contain the list of courses enrolled during the semester and thecorresponding grade scored.

ELIGIBILITY FOR THE AWARD OF THE DEGREE

A student shall be declared to be eligible for the conferment of the Degree if he / shehas

Successfully completed all the components and gained the requirednumber of total credits as specified in the curriculum corresponding to his/her Programme within the stipulated period.

No disciplinary action is pending against him / her.

The award of the degree must be approved by the Board of Management.

CLASSIFICATION OF THE DEGREE AWARDED

1. Candidate who qualifies for the award of the Degree having passed theexamination in all the courses in his / her first appearance, within thespecified minimum number of semesters and securing a CGPA not lessthan 8.0 shall be declared to have passed the examination in First Classwith Distinction.

2. Candidate who qualifies for the award of the Degree having passed theexamination in all the courses within the specified maximumnumber ofsemesters, securing a CGPA not less than 65 shall be declared to have

passed the examination in First Class.

3. All other candidates who qualify for the award of the degree shall bedeclared to have passed the examination in Second Class.

REVALUATION

Candidate can apply for revaluation and retotaling of his / her semesterexamination answer script (theory courses only), within 2 weeks from thedeclaration of results, on payment of a prescribed fee. For the same, the prescribedapplication has to be sent to the Controller of Examinations through the HOD. Acandidate can apply for revaluation of answer scripts not exceeding 5 subjects at a

time. The Controller of Examination will arrange for the revaluation and the resultswill be intimated to the candidate through the HOD concerned. Revaluation is notpermitted for supplementary theory courses.

Student may get the Photostat copy of the answer script on payment of prescribedfee, if he / she wishes. The student may represent the grievance, if any, to theGrievance Committee, which consists of Dean of the Faculty, (if Dean is HOD, theDean of another Faculty nominated by the University), HOD of the Departmentconcerned, the faculty of the course and Dean from other discipline nominated bythe University and the COE. If the Committee feels that the grievance is genuine,

the script may be sent for external valuation; the marks awarded by the Externalexaminer will be final.

MALPRACTICES IN EXAMINATIONS

1. Candidates scribbling on the question paper will be sent out of theexamination hall.

2. Candidates found in possession of material in the form ofprinted/Photostat / cyclostyled / handwritten or in any other means i.e.,written on paper, cloth, scale, furniture, hand/body etc., will be penalized.

3. Candidates found copying from the incriminating materials owned or

borrowed, in any form mentioned in Rule 2 or from the answer book of

another candidate or abetting another candidate to copy will be penalized.

4. Inserting previously written answer sheets brought from outside, aiding or

assisting for copying from additional book pilfered already or passing on

written bits for copying is liable to be penalized.

5. Candidates refusing to accompany the Hall Superintendent to the Chief

Superintendent or to the Registrar on account of his / her malpractice or

exhibiting verbal resistance inside or outside the examination hall or

running out of the hall with or without the answer paper or script will be

penalized.

6. Candidates should not leave the hall within 45 minutes from the time of

commencement of examination, with or without Question/Answer paper.

7. Candidate employing somebody to write examination will be penalized.

8. Cell phones and other Electronic gadgets are not permitted in the

Exam Halls. If any student is found possessing and using such

gadgets in the examination hall it will be seized and the student will

be returned to the student at the time of leaving the University with

TC.

9. The Candidates will be permitted to enter the Exam Hall within first 30

2. Strict silence should be observed in the library.

3. Any type of damage to the books must be strictly avoided.

4. The following rules will be administered while issuing books to the students.Each UG and PG Student is entitled to borrow two and four books respectively from the library(except reference books and periodicals) and the books will be issued on production ofidentity card of the student.

A book borrowed from the library must be returned within 15 days failing which, a fine of Rs. 1/-day will be imposed.The students are expected to check the books for any damage while borrowing and report thesame at once, failing which, they will be held responsible for the damage.

If a book is lost by a student, he/she must replace the book with a new one or pay double the

cost of the book.

The students are advised not to take books from their account and lend it to their

friends.

HOSTEL RULES The hostel rules are made to provide the inmate an academic and safe

atmosphere. Therefore, the inmates are requested to follow the rulesin to to.

Compulsory study, silence hours will be maintained between 8.30 pm to 10.30 pm.During the silence hours, the students are expected to be in the rooms allotted tothem.

No student will be permitted to leave the hostel without obtaining prior writtenpermission from the warden.

Parents / relations will be allowed to meet the students between 4.30 pm and

6.30 pm.

While admitting the students in the hostel, the parents must give the names ofthe visitors with whom the students can go out.

The students should not damage the hostel property.

No student should bring day scholars inside the hostel.

Smoking, drinking, using in toxicant materials playing cards are totally

prohibited.

Mobile phones will be seized if used from 8.30 pm to 10.30 pm (during silence /study hours) and will be returned only after the completion of the course.

Any kind of misbehavior in the hostel will lead to immediate expulsion from the

hostel and the University.

Keeping / possession if any intoxicant substance in the hostel ispunishable with immediate expulsion.

The parents and local guardians of girls staying in the hostel will be g i v e nTwo I.D. cards one to parents and another to local guardian. The girls are

permitted to go out of the Campus along with the Parents / Local guardian, onproduction of ID cards and after obtaining written permission from thewarden.

IMPORTANT DAYS TO REMEMBERThe students are instructed to pay the University fees within ten days from thecommencement of that semester.
