• Keeping the streets, pavements and parks clean – no rubbish, graffiti or dog mess etc.

• Taking pride in our own home – inside and outside – whether we own or rent

• Being friendly to others – a smile costs nothing but can make our day :)

• Getting involved with activities and clubs – and if they are not available, starting them!

• Looking after the flowers and trees

• Parking cars in places that don’t cause an obstruction, and on roads and designated parking areas rather than pavements, green areas or other unsuitable places.

Together we can work towards creating a community that we are proud to belong to.

SHORT HISTORY OF NECHELLS

Nechells lies on the sandstone ridge between the River Rea and Aston Brook (also known

as Hockley Brook). Its Anglo-Saxon name was probably atten echels which meant ‘at the

piece of land added on’ to an estate or manor. As Echelles the name appears in a document of 1180, as the property of Osbert de Parles. Situated in the manor of Aston, it was clearly

detached from his manor of Handsworth. The name probably predates that connection, but it is possible that Nechells was an estate added to the

parent village of Handsworth in earlier Anglo-Saxon times. By the mid-14th century the place

name was recorded as Nechells.

Although originally separate manors, Nechells was always considered with Duddeston from

medieval times. During the early 19th century the two manors were administered for a short time

by a joint Duddeston & Nechells Borough Council. By this time urban Birmingham had expanded

well beyond its manorial boundaries.

In 1800 the population of this rural area was numbered in tens; by the end of the century it

would be numbered in tens of thousands.

Although the building of small terraced house for the working-class was well under way by 1841, most of Duddeston, Nechells and Lower Saltley were still rural in the 1850s. However, by the 1870s long straight streets of working-class housing largely covered the area. With the development of industry along the River Rea, the population of Duddeston and Nechells more than doubled from 20,000 to 50,000 in just thirty years from the census of 1841 to that of 1871.

By the end of the 19th century Nechells was dominated on two sides by gas works, Windsor Street to the west and Saltley gas works to the west, at its height the largest in Europe. As a result of the acquisition

by Birmingham Corporation of the Windsor Street works and their imminent expansion, a branch railway line was made in 1884 from the Aston-Stechford Loop to Windsor Street Wharf to bring coal directly into the works. In 1899 a branch line was laid from the Grand Junction Liverpool line into Saltley gas works.

Two Victorian schools remain in Nechells. Cromwell Street Board School was opened by the Birmingham School Board in 1889 with accommodation for over a thousand pupils. The school was damaged by a German bomb during World War 2 and the building was then used as a civic restaurant until 1951 when it became a junior and infant school.

Hutton Street (now Eliot Street) Board School, opened in 1879, was designed to accommodate over a thousand children. Renamed Nechells Board School in 1897, the school was enlarged a number of times and reorganised in 1930

into senior, junior and infant departments. Due to overcrowding in 1954 in this

densely populated area, additional accommodation was provided

for the primary school in the Presbyterian church

on Long Acre. Nechells Primary School

continues to use

this fine Victorian gothic-style building with its red terracotta and square tower.

Between Thimble Mill Lane and Long Acre is a significant Roman Catholic Church. St Joseph’s was built in 1850 originally as the mortuary chapel for the newly opened Roman Catholic cemetery, at that time the only one in Birmingham. The chapel was designed in decorated gothic by A W N Pugin as the chancel of a future church.

After the First World War there was some demolition of the worst slums in this area, but little new building. However in 1937 over one hundred hectares of Duddeston and Nechells, including many war-damaged sites and houses unfit for habitation, were designated a Redevelopment Area. In the event the work had to be postponed until after World War 2.

The name, Nechells Green was chosen for the Duddeston side. Housing was now clearly segregated from industry which was zoned west of Windsor Street. With lower-density housing only half of the inhabitants could be rehoused here, and most dwellings were in multi-storey blocks. In the late 1990s many of these have been replaced with standard low-rise housing. The area east of the Birmingham-Liverpool railway, including Vauxhall, was defined as St Clements Redevelopment Area; and with the exception of Vauxhall, it still is known as Nechells. Low-rise redevelopment here continued beyond the mid-1970s and appears markedly different from the tower-blocks of Nechells Green.

Streets, Roads, Highways, Parks, Open SpacesWe may think that the streets, parks and roads are not our problem but gathering rubbish, cracked pavements and potholes all make our community look unsightly and contribute towards us feeling like we live and work in a derelict and disadvantaged neighbourhood. If we all report the problems to the right people we will see things change.

RefuseRubbish will always be a big issue in Nechells if we don’t all play our part in keeping our neighbourhood clean. So don’t drop it – bin in; but bin it in the right place too!

The collection for normal household rubbish is on a Friday morning. You should not put your rubbish out before 6pm on the Thursday evening. You should keep your rubbish and recycling in your own gardens/houses until it is time to put it out.

Wheelie BinsThere will be two wheelie bins for every household, for rubbish disposal and recycling – thanks to a successful council bid that secured

almost £30 million from the Government for the scheme. This money will help the city secure weekly refuse collections.

Some of the benefits are:

• Prevents bin bags being torn and spilling contents onto the streets

• Will help improve recycling – as the new bins have more capacity

• Wheelie Bins will help us reduce the cost of waste disposal

It will be essential to ensure that households receive an appropriate sized container for their needs. It is recognised that some households, for example larger households, would need larger containers. The standard service offered will be a 180 litre bin for rubbish collection, collected weekly; and a 240 litre bin for the recycling with a separate insert pod to collect the paper and card.

General domestic refuseWe collect refuse from domestic properties on the same day once a week. Collections happen every day, Monday to Friday, except Christmas

Day and Boxing Day in which case collections will take place the following week. Most tower blocks and other multi-occupied homes are (if suitable)

are provided with large containers. We empty these at least once a week, more

frequently if necessary.

RecyclingMost households in Birmingham now have a doorstep collection service.

We collect:

• Paper and card from your blue box, every fortnight Glass, bottles and jars, food and drinks cans and plastic bottles from your green box, every fortnight green sacks containing garden waste on alternate weeks to the above (changes to Green Waste Collection 2014)

• In line with many other local authorities, the council will introduce a chargeable service from February 2014. This will be an optional service, and those wishing to take advantage will be provided with a 240-litre wheeled bin. The annual collection charge, to be paid in advance, will be £35. Those not wishing to take up the service will have the option of buying a composter, at cost, via the council’s website.

Recycling is important to the environment:

Be careful not to put anything in here with your name and address on, these should be shredded or burnt to avoid identify theft.

DO NOT PUT large items like mattresses, fridges, paint pots, wood etc. out with the general rubbish – the refuse collectors will not remove these. If you have large items call for a special council collection on: 0121 303 1112 or take to one of the nearest rubbish tip: Holford estate, Witton or Castle Vale.

You can take small amounts (up to six 2.5 litre containers) to your local Household Recycling Centre your nearest one will be Holford Drive, Perry Barr B42 2TU provided they are stored in containers and you can transport them safely. For larger amounts, contact the waste disposal team on 0121 303 7358 who will be able to advise you on arranging safe disposal.

How to report fly tippingDumped rubbish is unsightly. Abandoning (fly tipping) rubbish is also illegal and can lead to a fine of up to £50,000 along with imprisonment. The City Council investigate dumped rubbish and can serve a legal notice to landowners to clear rubbish that attracts or harbours vermin. Where they have sufficient evidence they will prosecute fly-tippers.

The Council aim to collect:

• Dumped rubbish from the public highway or pavement – within two working days;

• Dumped rubbish from recycling sites – within one working day;

• Bag(s) of unsuitable green waste left along the highway, contaminated with things like stones or rubble – within five working days.

If you feel the rubbish is a health hazard, for example, if its attracting vermin or smelling badly, or you know who has dumped the rubbish go to http://www.birmingham.gov.uk/flytipping and click the ‘report dumped rubbish’ button to report online or call 0121 303 1112.

Information/advice dealing with pests – prevention advice – rats, mice etc: Call 0121 216 3030 or you can visit your nearest Customer Service Centre’s – New Aston House, Newtown Shopping Centre, Newtown B19 2SW or 54 Highfield Road, Washwood Heath B8 3QU. The people there will advise you on the best action to take if you have pests in your house or garden.

Parent & ToddlerA parent and toddler group meets in St

Matthew’s church. It runs on Wednesday mornings during term-time for those not

yet of school age. Although group size varies, we usually have a small group containing five

to ten children, allowing for a very sociable atmosphere for child and parent alike.

They engage in an array of craft activities, singing sessions and opportunities for the children to learn through play. Parents have valued these sessions both for their children’s development and also for the informal support they have received from one another for things such as toilet training, sleeping, and behaviour. We often see the children grow in confidence as part of the group and develop their social skills, including sharing, turn taking and making friends – all important for their transition to nursery and reception classes.

a) Aston & Nechells Foodbank

If you live in Nechells, the nearest Foodbank is at St Matthew’s Church, Duddeston Manor Road, Nechells B7 4JH each Monday between 12 and 2.30 pm. Please note: if you are not eligible for

the Trussell Trust Scheme and / or do not present a voucher, they will not be able to

provide food for you.

b) Parent and Toddler group

A parent and toddler group meets in St Matthew’s church. It runs on Wednesday

mornings during term-time for those not yet of school age. Although group size varies, we usually have a small group containing five to ten children,

allowing for a very sociable atmosphere for child and parent alike.

They engage in an array of craft activities, singing sessions and opportunities for the children to learn through play. Parents have valued these

sessions both for their children’s development and also for the informal support they have

received from one another for things such as toilet training, sleeping, and behaviour. We often

see the children grow in confidence as part of the group and develop their social skills, including

sharing, turn taking and making friends – all important for their transition to nursery and

reception classes.

c) Scouts

The 211th Scout Group meets at St. Matthew’s Church Hall on Monday evenings from 6:15pm to 7:45pm. They have places for boys and girls in all sections:

• Beavers (6-8yrs)

• Cubs (8-10yrs)

• Scouts (10-14yrs)

• Explorers (14-16yrs)

They have fun, play games, go out on trips, camping, swimming. They also can earn badges by learning doing our best to take up challenges, helping in the community and the church, by joining in their activities, services and events.
