wanting our country to be the best it can be. Ultimately, for a country as diverse as ours, thatwill mean different things to different people. Asfollowers of Jesus, we can love God, love ourneighbors, and love our country, because ourcountry is made up of our neighbors. Love meansbeing proud of what we can be proud of, and itmeans acknowledging where we as a country fallshort, so that we can work together towards a daywhen all people are treated with dignity andrespect. Below is the prayer and one reading fortoday. I hope as you celebrate, you will also find afew minutes to read and reflect and pray: Collect for Independence DayLord God Almighty, in whose Name the founders ofthis country won liberty for themselves and us, andlit the torch of freedom for nations then unborn:Grant that we and all the people of this land mayhave grace to maintain our liberties inrighteousness and peace; through Jesus Christ ourLord, who lives and reigns with you and the HolySpirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Matthew 5:43-48Jesus said, "You have heard that it was said, 'Youshall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' ButI say to you, Love your enemies and pray for thosewho persecute you, so that you may be children ofyour father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise onthe evil and the good, and sends rain on therighteous and the unrighteous. For if you lovethose who love you, what reward do you have? Donot even the tax collectors do the same? And ifyou greet only your brothers and sisters, whatmore are you doing than others? Do you not eventhe Gentiles do the same? Be perfect, therefore, asyour Heavenly Father is perfect." Many Blessings,Mother Deborah **

Gospel Luke 10:1-11, 16-20

The Lord appointed seventy others andsent them on ahead of him in pairs toevery town and place where he himselfintended to go. He said to them, "Theharvest is plentiful, but the laborers arefew; therefore ask the Lord of the harvestto send out laborers into his harvest. Goon your way. See, I am sending you outlike lambs into the midst of wolves. Carryno purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet

no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, `Peace tothis house!' And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peacewill rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you. Remain in thesame house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for thelaborer deserves to be paid. Do not move about from house to house.Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what isset before you; cure the sick who are there, and say to them, `Thekingdom of God has come near to you.' But whenever you enter atown and they do not welcome you, go out into its streets and say,`Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off inprotest against you. Yet know this: the kingdom of God has comenear.'

"Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects yourejects me, and whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me."

The seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, in your name even thedemons submit to us!" He said to them, "I watched Satan fall fromheaven like a flash of lightning. See, I have given you authority totread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy;and nothing will hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, thatthe spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written inheaven."

A joint statement from Bishop Breidenthal and Dean Greenwell.

CrossRoads Café: Our First Year In Coffee MinistryLast September, after a year of research and asking questions andvisiting churches with coffee shops, we at Church of the GoodShepherd took our next step and started our own coffee shopministry. When the Bishop came for his visit to our parish, he metthe staff and blessed the ministry we named CrossRoads Cafe. It wasa fun day for him, not just because he was excited that someone waswilling to try to live into his idea of a new way to do ministry, butbecause he is excited to see a parish "go deeper into thecommunity."

CrossRoads will be closed duringthe month of July, giving ussome time to reflect on how thefirst year in this ministry hasbeen going before we start againin August. Overall, it has been avery good experience. Here area few highlights from this firstyear: * We hired a staff, grew closerand stronger with that staff, had

to let one barista go, and hiredanother who is happy to beworking for us.

* We've interacted with many and diverse people from the Universityand even a few from the Athens area who are not connected with theUniversity. * Meetings were hosted in CrossRoads. Parishioner groups like theKnitters have met there several times, Faculty have met withstudents, and even a few student groups have met at CrossRoads. * Many of our regular customers are international students whoappreciate the good coffee and inclusive welcome. * There have been some wonderful conversations with listeners andMother Deborah. * The Pay-it-Forward part of this ministry has been a huge success;it's been a way to offer coffee to folks who can't pay, or don't havecash. Most of the people who receive coffee from the Pay-it-Forwardfund return and give back to that fund. Because the cost of a cup ofcoffee is inexpensive, even those who don't have much can participatein giving that matters. * It is growing. The growth is slow. But it is happening. We havemade enough money to pay for the cost of coffee, sugar, creamer, cups, and lids. We still need the funds from the Bishop to be able tocover wages and maintenance of equipment, but it is impressive to becovering the cost of supplies after only a year of being open. CrossRoads Café: Two More Things

THANK YOU!To everyone who prays for, visits CrossRoads, purchases coffeefrom CrossRoads, meets with people there, recommends it to yourfriends, and has grown to love it and its ministry. You are a HUGE

part of why it is growing and is a way for people to engage with achurch that isn't worship. YOU help people to see God is Love andis Present all the time, not just during worship services or in thesanctuary. Well done!

MOVING FORWARD

There are always next steps for anyministry, and it is time to reflect again onwhat is next for CrossRoads Cafe.Expanding hours is one next step, and weneed to think about what days and timesare the best ones for our neighbors whowill be coming into CrossRoads. Anotherstep may be considering ways we as aparish can learn from CrossRoads andconsider serving Deeper Roots Coffeeduring coffee hour since Deeper RootsCoffee is single source, direct trade, and itsfarmers practice environmentallyappropriate and sustainable farming, which

is in line with our values. Looking forward to what comes next!

Reading with the Rector: Holy Grounds TheSurprising Connection between Coffee and Faith - FromDancing Goats to Satan's Drink by Tim SchenckWhen I saw this book written by anEpiscopal priest who has a passion andfascination for coffee, I thought it was anappropriate book for the Rector of aparish that has its own coffee shopministry to read.

It is the fruits of Fr. Tim's sabbatical, where he traveled to coffee farms inColumbia and Nicaragua, coffee roastersall over America, including one at a GreekOrthodox monastery, and coffee shops all over the world, including atthe Vatican to learn more about the history, origin, and world ofcoffee. He didn't have to look very hard to discover coffee'sconnection to all three of the Abrahamic faiths: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. All three have both embraced and feared coffee. He alsodiscovered a powerful connection to faith and coffee houses wherethroughout history people of all faiths have gathered to discussimportant issues and form relationships. He even discovered that

composer Johann Sebastian Bach loved coffee so much that he wrotea one-act comic opera about a coffee-loving young woman namedAria, around the year 1735, called the Coffee Cantata. Tim has a way of sharing is passion for coffee and his faith that isfunny and reflective and can make you think about how enjoying acup of coffee is another way we can positively impact the lives ofothers as followers of Jesus. I enjoyed reading this book so much, Iwould like to share it with all of you. Please let me know if you wouldbe interested in reading this book and meeting as a group to talkabout it.
