Successful 2018 Northern Zone Convention Congratulations to David Targett and his crew for achieving a very successful Northern Zone Convention and competition. The planning and organisation for the event was flawless. For this year’s convention and photography competition, the Hastings Club departed from a long tradition by transferring competition images to a specially created Northern Zone website for the judging process and recording scores. Colin Woods, webmaster of MyPhotoClub websites, worked tirelessly setting up the Northern Zone website for the convention, coordinated the judging process with the FCC judges. I greatly appreciate Colin’s contribution to the success of the convention.
This year’s event, I believe, has raised the professionalism of the convention and set a new benchmark which will be difficult to emulate, and I know how much hard work and negotiation went into the planning of the event. The exhibitors attracted great interest from delegates and they displayed a fine array of photographic equipment to handle and discuss.
The seven ‘free’ Masterclasses led by professional presenters were a great success. The presenters’ sessions covered a wide range of subjects which were well attended and drew favourable comments from the delegates. The morning and afternoon teas were superb with a delicious variety of cakes and pastries. The dinner, award presentation and the after-dinner speech by Roy Killen was excellent and greatly appreciated by the delegates.
We especially thank the following presenters and masterclass leaders who donated their time to attend the conference: Dr Roy Killen, Dr Jim Frazier, Mark Galer, Malcolm Fackender, Ben Fewtrell, Tim Bauer, Doug Coleman, Susan McNeil, Dianne Schofield, Colin Schofield and David Oliver. Our special thanks go to the Federation of Camera Clubs (FCC) Competition judges: Dr Roy Killen, Alex Hunter and Neville Foster. The quality of the venue contributed to the success of the convention and I thank management of the Laurieton United Services Club for the use of their excellent facilities for this year’s convention.
I wish to express my great appreciation to David Targett and his crew of Lindie Kolver, Jody Carey, Peter Forsyth, Joanne Brown, Chris Randall, and Kathy Appleby who dedicated many hours to planning and running the event; and to John and Suzie Smith, the event photographers—whose images provided a souvenir of attendance for delegates. I would also like to thank Frank Kolver, Trevor Dearle, Charlie Madders, Kevin Ho, John Shaw, Ian Wilbore, Paul Barron, and Linda Appleby for their vital help behind the scenes.

Rod Has lived in Port Macquarie since 2000. Prior to that, he lived in Tamworth for 27 years; before that lived on a farm at Willow Tree near Quirindi—where he started work. Two years later, in 1963, moved to Tamworth where he worked in the carpentry industry for 14 years—and later became a partner in an office furniture and stationary business.
When Did You Start In Photography? I bought my first camera when I worked in Quirindi from a Chemist shop as they stocked a few cameras — could only buy film — and had to send it away and wait up to three weeks for it to come back.
In Tamworth I was still taking photos all the time and joined a local camera club—which folded six months later.
So I put an ad in the local paper and had a lot of responses from people wanting to form a club.
The newly formed club was called:
Tamworth Camera Club
—and it’s still going today!
I did a lot of study, and from 1973—1998 became a wedding photographer, averaging around thirty weddings a year.
Places You Like to Shoot? I did go to USA in 1981 with eleven other people, for 21 days travelling from Canada, USA, by motorhomes; took a lot of slides, but they did not last, also shot a lot of landscapes during the trip.
What Fuels Your Creative Passion? I love to photograph places and areas around our region up to the hinterland: also action, such as boat racing, rodeo, speed boat racing, plus landscapes.
Where would you like your photographic Journey to Take You?
I would like to increase my knowledge to better myself in Photoshop, and the way light falls and plays a big part in images — and put that knowledge to good use in my work.
Equipment You like to Use? I did use Nikon camera and lens, till I came to Port Macquarie then changed over to Canon when digital came in. New ways, new things to learn, no more film to develop. I now have Canon EOS 200D body; Sigma 10/20 lens; 55/250
Canon lens; 300mm L series lens; Canon 430 flash unit, carbon fibre tripod and monopod.
Photographers You Admire?
I do like Adam Williams work. Rod
