--HONOLULU, SEPT. 13. 1893

TO OUR READERS.

Tho Hawaii HoLOraUA appearsto-di- ty after two weeks suspensioniii a Mr form. The HolomuaPublishing Compant having be-

come proprietors of the paper havedecided to issne an English dailypper to be published every after-noon. This step has been takenuccording to the often expresseddesires on the part of our patrons, and we hope it will bo satisfac-tory to them. "Wo have notedwith some amusement the hasteand glee with which our allegeddemise was hailed by the twonuuexation-tfrgun- s. The Editorof the morning paper has evenbrced up during the last week, and become quite fresh he needssalt while the dreary Starman. has some what prematurelyrend his R. I. P. ovor our sup-posed corpse. The Holomua isfitill to the fore,- - and will remainthere in spite of tho croaking ofthe would be official journals andth'eir handful of political

Tho Star and the Advertiserhave taken occasion to repeat tholo invented some months ago forKlitical purposes by themselves,

Hint Her Majesty the Queen hasbeen supporting this journal orwis in any way financially inter-ested in it. We fail to seo whatpossible benefit the annexationcause can gtin by-th- constantreiteration of this assertion whichboth the editors referred to knowivt bo a lie, but we shall confineourselves to once more stamp thostatement of the two papers asutterly fxlso and untrue and posi-

tively declare that the Queen inno way over 1ms been or is inter-ested in the Hawaii Holomua.

Tho policyHolomua willthe sumo linesbeen the case.:iid couductors

firmly believe in ho honor of theUhitvd States, aud are convinced

That justicowill be done t the Hawaiiauswo have never doubted, and thatIUj slf government deprived afr--e people through the agencyof United States troops and gunswill be no manc ih refuse to believe who knowstlio character, the principles andtho high sense of honor of thattrim American who tu-da- y by thewill of the AuiPrictn people isplaced at the head of tho UnitedSuites' government.

Tho Hawaii Holomua will fear-lessly handle the topics of inter-est to the country and to thop "Qple," andrwill nevor hesitate intolUng th - troth, independently ofwho will got hurt, bt, thero willin thtrs&eoiumns be no prying into

TheHawaii Holomua is pledged tosupport the rights and privilegesof tho Hawaiian people, theinterests of the laboring man andgood and honest government forthe whole country, and to thefulfilment of that pledge, we willdevote all our efforts and all thomeans at our disposition.

TOPICS OF THE DAY.

It is too b 'd abnit that ball atthe Hawaii n Hotelnight, which is given as a fare-well t the officers on the Boston, and as a welcome to the Phila-delphia officers, aud which doesnot receive tho countenance ofthe annexation club aud of theStar ed.tor. Tue last namedcomplains because the b-il- l is tobe given at tho Hotel, ai b aidingwhich lias h ro3alist flavor, andwhich is too small to hold themembers of the club. The St reditor evidently intends to issueinvit.tions for the ball to hischums in the club, and if the2,000 Portuguese are included inth.t number, the Hotel will un-

doubtedly b- - too small to holdthem. But ' the leading annexa-tionists" who prophecies th tthe ball wili be a failure, becausethey "ain't going" should havekept still until the' receivedtheir invittions. It may soundunnatural to tlio editor of the

. .Cl 1 t i ioiar ana tue leading annexa-tionist?, but. it is yet a fact thata ball can be given and be greatsuccess, and that the officers onthe Boston and Philadelphia maybe able to meet all they care tomeet of Honolulu society withouta single member of the club ortho St r ed tor being present. Ittn;iy seem iraposs ble to the greatguns in tho club and brotherSmith, "but thems are thefacts."

We had decided to throw aveil of oblivion over all theebullutious which havo appearedin the annexation orcans for thelast two weeks, and we were pre-

pared to ignore all the usual orunusual rot which the two editorshurrii d in during the suspensionof our uaner, but when Mr.Jbhustono calls Editor Logan an"excuse for an editor," we mustcompliment him for speakingabout what he knows for once. When Mr. Johnstone at one timewas-

- tho editor of the Bulletin,Mr. Logan had constantly to be"an excuse" for him, and satisfythe clamor of the "devils" forcopy by writiug the editorialshimself. Tho reason why wetoll it not in Gath.

We would like to know wherein the world a detachment ofregular soldiers with a cannon iseven nsed for the purpose of ar-

resting one (1) cr.minal. If thepolice force is unable to performthe simplest duties, generally at-

tached to such an organization, they j should be disbanded " andrelegated to sell leis on NuuanuStreet among the other oldwomen.

A cent mporary states that$100 was offered as an indnce-nintt- o

fi id ont if the criminalin Ewa w--s really dead after

the jne t lousaud (more or less)shots had been fired into thehouse where he was known to beThe policemen must be well offindeed, even fr these bad timesS'nce even $100 were not sufficienttemptation. for any of them to goand take a look at the bud, budcorpse.

In the expedition to Ewa, theForeign Office was representedby Mr. Hatch's Aidede campMajor Potter. His presence isaccounted for by the possibilitythat diplomatic negotiationsmight have been necessitated be-

tween t'ie learned Attorney-Gener- al

and the Leper, and thoMajor could then have been usedto carry the white flag or other-wise exhibit his military anddiplomatic proclivities.

The Star contained a gloriousdescription of tho fertility of thePuawaawaa land in Kona Hawaiithe other day. and made themouths of the "young men withsavings" in Honolulu water byexplaining the prospects ofmaking a fortune by t iking, uphomesteads in that God-forsake- n

district. It was quite interestingto read about the band of cattlewhich the Star-correspond- andother enthusiastic homesteadboomers drove to the fertileplains of Pnuwaawaa ably assitsted by Colonel the Hon. C. P.Iaukea homestead - promoter-in-chi-ef

of'the P. G. The Star for-

got though to tell its readers thatthe last heard from Puawaawaaabout the baud of cattle was thatthe boys were busy skinning thehorned cpxidrupeds everyone ofthem having died from disgustand despair by looking at theStar's fertile homesteads. TheColonel arrived in Honolulu with-out beiug skinned.

The P. M. S. S. China Arrives.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS.

The company wliich, under thename of the Associated . Pressfurnishes to the newspapers ofthe United Stites news of allkinds, and from all parts of theworld has heretofore been consid-ered a reliable and honest enter-prise, the principle of which wasto give to the civilized world in asystematic way all facts whichmight be considered of universalinterest to the readers of Amer-

ican newspapers. To jodge fromthe manner in which the affairsof Hawaii have been presented tothe world through the AssociatedPress, and more especiallythrough the branch office in SanFrancisco, it is obvious that theusefulness of the company hassadly deteriorated. The SanFrancisco branch, under the mnn-agemeut- of

Chis. S. Dielil hasfuruished reports of Hawaiian af-

fairs which have been wr.tten un-

der his instructions in a biasedaud dishonest manner. The spe-

cial correspondents sent to Ha-

waii, and later on the local cor-resonde-

appointed to work forthe Associated Press have com-

peted with each other in fillingtheir dispatches with direct lies, withmisst tements.and with fatesand can.irds. The papers in theWestern Stitts when receivetheir news from the San Francis-co branch of the Associated Pressshould be made aware of the ity

of the dispatches is-

sued from that office. It is some-

thing new that an association likethe Associated Press Companyshould take sides in politicalmatters.and doctor the dispatchespublished to suit the views andsentiments of the jingoists andannexationists in. the States. Butanybody conversant with, affairsin Hawaii will know such to bean undisputable fact. The Re-

publican papers which desire toconvey the truth to their readersshould sever their connectionswith the San Francisco branch ofthe Associated Press; the Dem-

ocratic papers should never ac-

cept and publish a dispatch fromthat company, at least, as long asthe present manager is runningthe shop for tho purpose of air-

ing his individual political ideas.

The most childish and absurdfake which yet has been spreadthrough tho Associated Press dis-

patches from Hawaii is the Jap-anese canard. The Americanpapers have solemnly wr.tteneditorials about the ''Japanesecloud inHawaii,'about "Blount'staking a hand iu the Japanesedemands in Hawaii," and about"Blount's hurried departure onaccount of Japan's attitude inHawaii." We have in former is-

sues pointed out the absurdity ofsupposing that tho Americanminister to Hawaii ever commit-ted the blunder of interfering ina question between the governments of Hawaii and Japan, aris-ing simply from the different in-

terpretation of the treaty existingbetween those two countries. Theannexation orgms which have at-

tempted to insult Mr. Blount, byaccusing him of taking such anundiplomatic action have failedto produce the letter which theyclaim Minister Bloont wrote toMr. Dole, although both editorsare ready to claim that they havefree access, both to the HawaiianForeign Office and to the conf- i-flptifn rf My Tin In rrt, -

1 sirnplv thattheHawaiiflnGoYAm- -

ment under Mr. Dole's presidiumshirked the responsibility ofnnswering Japan by advancing theexcuse tnat they were only "pro-vision- nl'

and were neither a per-

manent nor stable government, and therefore unable to take ac-

tion in such nvitxl matter. "Whilethe Japanese Government evi-

dently feels satisfied by havingno dealings with the Hawaiian"Provisional" it is safe to sup-pose that the question of Hawaiifulfilling its treaty obligationshas neither been shelved nor for-

gotten, but will bo fully ventil-

ated and brought to the surfacewhen the "Provisional" vanishesinto thin air, aud is succeeded bya permanent aud st ble govern-ment based on tho will of theHawaiian people.

Bnt all the talk about Blount'sinterference is simple a canardinvented by the Associated Presscorrespondents for the purpose ofcreating a feeling in Americaagainst Japan, and thereby, ifposs ble, bo ira the hopelessly lostannexation cause. The men whoinvented tho murder society, andtho dynamite conspiracies and allthe" other sensational yarns willof course stop at nothing, andnothing which they can writeneed surprise anybody. Th it theSan Francisco branch of thoAssociated Press should publishsuch r t and thereby impose onits patrons is a great deal moreof a surprise, and it is a disgracoto that company.
