Here in Hawaii we can train all year round. Springis particularly fun in that a few sports kick into fullgear, namely paddling and triathlon. Many of myreaders are involved in these sport and have a fewquestions about training and diet. Let’s get to itthen:

How can I develop speed, agility and staminawithout spending lots of time in the gym?

If you are looking for an edge in your racing, ifyou want to be leaner, faster and stronger, thenKettlebells is your answer. The short, intenseKettlebell workout will help develop yourstrength, muscle economy and muscularendurance that will transform your performance.Kettlebells are used widely for conditioning for avariety of sports.

It allows you to use your body as an integratedunit with time saving functional workouts.Kettlebell workouts use whole body, multidirec-tional moves that require less time than tradition-al workouts and are the ultimate fat-blaster. Youcan burn up to 22 calories per minute during akettlebell workout. The kettlebell techniquerequires your body to synchronize, with the mus-cles fibers and muscles working together tomaintain stability and balance as you swing thekettlebell through the range of motion. Becausethe load on a kettlebell is off-center, it requiresmore agility to lift it than a dumbbell. This helpsto develop a strong core and balance which willhelp you maintain stability integral for efficiencyand power. For example, in cycling, you needstrong leg, core and upper body muscles.Studies have shown that the more force your hipsand legs can generate relative to your weight, thefaster your bike will move down the road.

Additionally, the fast paced workouts help to con-dition your cardiovascular system much like aninterval workout. These high intensity workoutsallow your body to adapt and be able to adjust toa higher lactate threshold which translates intospeed and endurance.

My husband and I are in our late 50’s and arevery active. I paddle and he does triathlon, however we don’t look like it. He has a bellyand I have cellulite. What gives?

Well this is a twofold answer that you may or maynot want to hear. You are a little older and yourmetabolism has slowed down a bit and you arelosing about 5% lean mass each year. Theanswer, exercise more and eat less. Simple….Yes. Easy… no. Diet plays a big role in how ourbody develops. The goal is to eat whole, freshfood (vegetables, fruits, whole grains) that yourbody can easily break down and use right away. This will help not only with rebuilding the muscle, but in recovery after hard workouts, in our body’sability to absorb the nutrients from the foodwhich will show in your skin, in how you feel, sleep and function each day. Furthermore, youractivity should be balanced and focus not only oncardiovascular exercises but also stretching (flex-ibility) and strength training. You need to liftweights to keep up with your muscle loss eachyear. The diet should take care of the big belly butthe cellulite is a little different. Cellulite is justplain old fashioned fat and can appear on yourbody at any age. Yikes! We have strands of con-nective tissue that separate fat cells into compart-ments and also connect fat to skin. In women, these fibers form a honeycomb-shaped pattern, which when there is more fat they have a tenden-cy to bulge and give us that cottage cheese, dim-pled orange skin look. Men on the other handhave horizontal running fibers that hold the fat in.Not fair. Over time our bodies change and theconnective tissue thickens with age, skin getsthinner and the cellulite is more apparent. Ug, theoutcome sounds dismal. Can you get rid of it?Are we doomed? Well you do have a few choices. You can try liposuction…suck that fat right outand look fabulous. Think about it – it is expensive, painful and just promotes fat to pop up in an evenmore unflattering location on your body. Not agood option. The other choice is plain old hardwork. With the right exercise and diet plan youcan lose fat and gain muscle that will smooth out

the skin and give it a more taut appearance. Fatlose will only shrink the fat cells, but an exerciseprogram focusing on the lower body (lunges, squats, abduction, adduction, and more) is thekey. If you are consistent, you could see resultswithin 8 weeks. But think of it more as a lifestylethan spot reducing. By and large coming to termsand accepting who and what we are is critical. Mysuggestion, go work out and make it fun. Themore you move your body the better you will feelguaranteed.

Whether you want to lose weight, run faster orclimb Mount Everest, a personalized program isyour best bet in achieving those goals. The hardwork is always worth the effort in being success-ful. Let me know how I can help you with yourjourney and email any questions you may have to“Ask the Trainer” at [email protected] remember “PERSISTENT CONSISTENCY” isthe key to success.

Until next time, train hard, laugh often, love pas-sionately and have fun.

The 16th annual Na Wahine Festival is coming upon Sunday, September 14, at 6:30 a.m. atKapiolani Park.

Our 15th annual event was a huge anniversarycelebration where Hawaii’s top pro triathlete, BreeWee came to compete and win. Her very firsttriathlon ever was the Na Wahine Sprint Triathlonin 2003 where she came in 3rd place. She cameback in 2005 to win and the rest is history.

Sixteen years later, the race has now become apermanent and much anticipated event onHawaii’s triathlon calendar with almost 300 par-ticipants each year. But why did Try Fitness focuson an exclusive women’s triathlon? “This event isso special. There is an amazing outpouring ofsupport and camaraderie amongst the partici-pants. It is an environment where women whomight feel intimidated by a coed event, have toopportunity to feel more comfortable. And I

believe that through this event we have intro-duced many women to the sport of triathlon. Theevent also allows our top female triathletes tocompete head to head with each other and thetop finisher will always be a female athlete,”explains Carlberg. “Preparing for a triathlon issuch a great way to exercise and train, meet peo-ple of like minds and keep your body fit andhealthy,” adds Carlberg.

Here’s what women have to say:

“Thanks for another great event!” - Jeanine

“KC, Thank you for putting so much LOVE inyour events!” - Mariane

“What a fun time … It is such a fun event.Glad to be a part of it and my finish could nothave been more satisfying.” - Deb

The race will feature live music, a variety of excit-ing prize opportunities, with awards being givento overall winners, age groups and teams.

LOS CABOS, MEXICO – In the sweltering heat ofthe Baja Peninsula, 1,200 triathletes pushed theirphysical abilities to the fullest at the 2014 FordIronman Los Cabos triathlon on Sunday, March30, 2014. Multinational triathletes representing49 countries competed for 50 age-group slots inthe 2014.

Ironman World Championship scheduled forOctober 11, 2014, in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. The2014 Ford Ironman Los Cabos race was held as aphysical and personal milestone as well as a qual-ifying passage to the world championship.Completion of the Ironman Los Cabos, alone, was an incredible feat. The Los Cabos coursebegan with a 2.4-mile swim in the Sea of Cortes, followed by a 112-mile cycling route, ending witha 26.2 mile run.

Amongst the 1,200 competitors, Hawaii was well-represented by an elite few. Armando Espinoza,Kai Nakamura, Lawrence Ollice, and Alan Priestcompleted the 2014 Ironman Los Cabos triathlonwith aloha spirit. Ollice crossed his first Ironmanfinish line, and ranked 69th in his division – anexceptional success as a first-timer. This triathlonmarked Nakamura’s seventh Ironman competi-tion. Los Cabos was his course of choice becauseof its strong similarities to Kona.

“It reminds me of Kona,” said Nakamura,“Because you have the stretch of highway, it’s along stretch, it’s rolly and windy. It’s tough.”

This year has been tremendous for Priest. Notonly has he now completed 15 Ironmantriathlons, but he has “aged-up,” or transitionedto the next age group (70-74), with the recent cel-ebration of his 70th birthday.

“It’s addictive, it’s totally addictive. It’s swim, bike, run, every kid knows how to do it.” Priestsaid. “It’s a great lifestyle. It makes you eat well,it makes you take care of your body and it makes

you think about the difference between condition-ing and health. They’re not the same, but goodconditioning leads to good health. The people areamazing. For long distance races, the endurancetime, these are really just the coolest people inthe world. I do it because it’s the best thing to doas a lifestyle and with the coolest people on theplanet.”

Espinoza has also completed his seventhIronman this year in Los Cabos. Espinoza will beseen again in Kona, as he qualified for the 2014Ironman World Championship.

“This is my first time making it to Kona after 7times,” Espinoza shared when asked how it felt toqualify. “It hasn’t settled in yet. I think it will whenI get home. It’s great to have the support of myfamily, they have also made lots of sacrifices.”

When asked what he did differently during thisrace, he replied, “I think my training was betterand my race tactics were keener. I think it was theexecution of how to get through this event.”

I wasn't a picky person for running shoes at all. The only two things I used to care about on a running shoe was its colors and comfortability. I never had "that" specic shoe that I love. Until two years ago, when my husband told me about a shoe company called On that was looking for people to work at their booth during Ironman Hawaii 2012 expo. I am not a big fan of working at expos, however, I was planning to go watch the race, and he told me the shoes look very interesting. So I decided to take the opportunity and work for them during the expo. To my surprise the On booth was the coolest booth I ever seen at an expo. If you were there that year, you will remember. It was the booth made with local palm trees and pieces wood, very organic. I loved the atmosphere they created on that booth! Then I saw the shoes. They looked very dierent from any shoes that I have tried in the past. I loved the colors and the design. The owners of the company were there and I asked what was the technology behind the shoes. They told me" "First you have to try it on! And feel the dierence." So they gave me a pair and when I put it on my rst impression was "feels dierent, and it's comfortable". When I came back to Oahu, I went for a 10 miles run with my Nike shoes, at that time that shoe was my favorite training shoe. After the run, my legs were sore. I did not run much during Ironman week and I thought my lack of tness was making me sore. The next day, I ran with the On shoes, and it felt great! I didn't feel my legs pounding the ground as much. The next day I tried to wear my nikes again, but just from the rst steps I felt the ground, I realized that the ON shoes were so much better. That day I decided to give away all my old running shoes, and start running just on On shoes. And since then I haven't had an injury and I also had all my PRs in 5k, 10k, half marathon, and

marathons! I know we all have dierent feet and taste for shoes. But I highly

recommened you to try and feel the dierence, because just like they told me "you gotta feel the dierence for yourself!"

by Brad Yates, www.bradyates.comA time to reflect on the pain, seek awarenessand respond in a proactive manner.Sounds good and smart.Unfortunately, I ignored the red flags andpushed on. I wore only a selection of MBTTrainers (Masai Barefoot Technology), inter-nalized the discomfort and walked slower.Such is the case of an athlete who is used toplaying through pain and unable to recognizethe need to adjust.Looking back, when I lost my balance on theSUP board I went into the gym. When walk-ing downtown to do Vasper became a burden,I gradually stopped going. Over time myworkouts shortened and my fitness suffered. And then came a message from the editor ofHawaii Sport, they wanted me to write anarticle about The Shoe Doctor. They pickedme because my feet and knees were, in theirwords, “really screwed up and they wanted tosee if these custom orthotic insoles couldhelp someone like me.”I agreed. The resistance hit and it took me awhile to follow up, complete the process, getthe insoles and write this piece.

THE PROCESSMet with Clayton at the Running Room onKapahulu or Runner’s Hi in Aiea. He ana-lyzed my feet, used advanced 3-D digitaltechnology to create my orthotic insole. Ireturned in two weeks to have the insoleshaped in my shoe and fine–tuned for eachfoot. I wore the insoles home.

PROPER SUPPORTThis custom made insole is designed to makesure that the three arches on each foot areproperly supported and aligned. Claytoncautioned me that it could take one to twoweeks for my arches to adjust to the insoleand during this time there could be some dis-comfort. ReviewMy insoles have been an instant success. Iexperienced no discomfort. I wear theinsoles at work and play, and the pain in myfeet has all but disappeared. An added bonusis that my feet seem to have become betteraligned. I can now wear a variety of shoeswithout the insoles and without discomfort. “In short, I believe that The Shoe Doctor hasa great product and I appreciate the differ-ence the insoles have made in my ability towork and play and maintain my fitness levelwithout pain in my feet.”

HITTING THE RIGHT NOTESFor the most part we know our fellow ath-letes from the sports world, in bikegear, shorts, running shoes or bathing suits, but itis fun to get to know what these people do in“real” life...what is sport not real life?We found two people to interview about whatthey do besides sports:

Feet Hurt!

KATE JOHNSON

My first love is cycling, with Triathlon a closesecond. In my first life, I took up cycling witha boyfriend whose cousin was riding in the1984-86 Race Across America (RAAM). Hebought me my first bike, a prototypeCannondale when they first came out with awomen's specific fat-tube frame. I rode forseveral years, just recreationally, until a crashin 1989 when I fractured my collarbone and afew other areas and called it quits. In 1999, Iparticipated in my first sprint tri on a whim, andwas hooked. After moving to Hawaii in 2000,I gave up triathlon in favor of cycling in 2003.So, my long answer to a short question: I havebeen cycling seriously for about 14 years. I amnow getting back into triathlon after about a 10year hiatus. Hmmm, favorite bike? That's like

asking me which of my kids I like the best. MyMerlin road bike (which is really a tri-frame, builtcustom for someone else), which I purchased in2001 or 2002 has been with me through every-thing...from crashes and climbs to joy ridesthrough France. But my brand new Niner Jet 9Carbon has catapulted my mountain biking skillsto a level where I really love off road riding now.For work I am a "jack of all trades, master ofnone". I am a part-time musician with The RoyalHawaiian Band. I play clarinet with them, andvery infrequently now, sing with them. I alsowork/coach part time for Boca Hawaii. Though Ido not currently have a position as a choir direc-tor, choral music is my passion. I am currentlylearning to play classical guitar. My favoritepiece of music...oh my, again, that's a tough one.I love to play Aaron Copland's Clarinet Concerto, and for choral works, it'd have to beMendelssohn's monumental work, "Elijah".Favorite stretch of road for cycling? What everstretch of road I'm on...But Tantalus makes mesmile...either through the pain of the climb or thethrill of the descent with views to boot! I have toadmit that my practicing takes a back-seat to mytraining right now. I spend about 30-40 minutes aday with my guitar, and about the same with myclarinet. Sometimes I miss a day. Training, because I'm shooting for Honu this year, takes alot more time than that. I have to say thank youto my family, my very supportive husband, Loren, and my two patient and beautiful daughters, Amy& Kathryn. They help keep me grounded.

A PS. from Kate: I am no longer doing Honu orany tris for that matter due to injury. So I amgearing up for whatever cycling races comealong, and a summer at 10,000ft in Crested Butte,CO for a music festival and mountain biking.

I did my first 21K.

It took me a while to get in the pool and kind oflearn to swim (I still can't swim but that's how I getto my favorite part of triathlon, the bike). I consid-er myself a triathlete with a running problem. Eventhough I may not look like I can't run fast I love thechallenge of improving my times. My dream goalsare under 5hrs at Honu and a sub 40min 10K.

After three years dreaming about a Trek Speedconcept finally I was able to upgrade to one ofthose with electronic shifting. I also love riding myGiant tcr Advance SL0 with DI2, they said onceyou go electronic you will never go back tomechanic.

My favorite road to ride my bike is in NSWAustralia from Wollongong to Kaima point withthe bunch at 5:30 and watching the sunrise. I usu-ally train anywhere from 11 to 15 hours, maxingaround 20 hours before Honu.

My favorite of music? Ummm! Way to many but itis between Tchaikovsky symphony 4 and Mahlersymphony number 2. Back in the day I used topractice music for two hours or more daily.

ROBERTO WHARTONAs long as I remember I've been involved withsport and music. My first contact with musicwas solfege (a music education method, ed)when I was 8yrs old, also I started playingbaseball. Long story short I didn't get involvedwith endurance sport until 2008 or 2009 when

Previously we brought you the story of SusieStephens who is in the process of RetracingRoutledge. Routledge is an avid traveller from herhometown, and Susie’s first leg, running throughEngland has been completed, and you can readabout it below. The second leg, biking in SouthAmerica, is going on right now as you read this.

Tell us a little bit about your run: The run itselfwas tough in ways that I could never have predict-ed. Overall it was an amazing experience -- diff i-cult to put into words, but I can definitely say itwas full of emotional and physical highs and lows!I felt fairly well-prepared going into the run. Ofcourse in the days leading up to any event a fewquestions popped into my mind, but those werethe moments when I had to remain mentallyfocused. I had read a number of books about ultrarunning, poured over many websites, listened topodcasts late at night, and discussed the subjectwith various people from around the world whohad undertaken similar challenges. In the end thereis nothing quite like first hand experience, and yes,I now understand one recurring theme that I readabout: the highs and lows of ultra running. It's aroller coaster and you just have to hold on tightand stay onboard! What was the greatest challenge? By far thegreatest challenge was trying to accommodate andalleviate the soreness in my knees that startedaround day 4. When we decided to change theplanned route and go more 'off-road' the softerground definitely helped, but the wet conditionsand mud in some areas created a whole new set ofchallenges -- like staying upright! How was the weather? The weather was actuallyvery cooperative! But the mild winter in the UK

presented a few extra challenges, such as floodingin Oxfordshire and extra muddy footpaths! It'shard to say whether I would have preferred snowor ice, since those conditions are equally challeng-ing to run in! I'm not complaining at all -- theweather was great for February in England!! We re you close to giving up at any point? Iwouldn't have given up, but walked or hobbled myway if I'd had to! Butwhen my knees first flared upI was scared that I might not physically be able tokeep going! The thought of not completing the runand disappointing so many people drove me tokeep going and finish what I had started! What was your mileage/km. per day on yourlongest run day? There were two long days of 32miles each. What kind of people did you meet on yourway? I was very lucky to be accompanied bymembers of Darlington Harriers and A t h l e t i c sClub and also the cross-country team fromHummersknott Academy (my old school) on thefirst day. On day 3 I was able to connect with mycousin Andrew who is a member of Otley A t h l e t i cClub and in training for the Edinburgh marathon. It worked out perfectly for him since we turned theday into his Sunday long run basically! InNorthamptonshire I was supported by people onhorseback, cyclists, and a solo runner, someonejust trying to get back into running. Further southin Oxfordshire I was accompanied by a group oflocal runners who had a varied background, one inparticular was training for the London marathon. On the very last day a lady who had just finishedher daily run heard I was coming down the roadand she ran back to meet me! It was great to havecompany for the very last section, which includeda short but steep hill! All in all it was a a mixture,

and quite often when I stopped to cross roads Iwould chat with cyclists or people walking whooften just said, “Good Luck!”Tell us how it is going with your p roject: T h efundraising for Easter Island/ Rapa Nui has startedwell but we still have a long way to go towards thetotal amount needed for the BioMax and we needas much help as possible! The BioMax is a specialsewage digesting unit that is greatly needed on theisland where there is currently no real sewagetreatment aside from cesspools and septic tanksthat are nearly full! The BioMax will help becauseit produces grey water, reducing the need for freshwater from the wells and aquifer for outdoor usesso that more of it can be used for drinking! T h enext part of the challenge is the bike ride acrossSouth America, and the fundraising continues aswe go! Please see our JustGiving page for furtherdetails. Thank you!

Honolulu Rainbow EkidenMarch 8, 2014Kapiolani Park to Diamond Head and backBy: Courtney Osaki The Honolulu Rainbow Ekiden is a 25 km relay course from Kapiolani Park to Diamond Head lookout and back. Each team consisted of 5 members that ran 5 km each along the scenic course. The starting entertainment consisted of zumba and two official Ekiden cheerleading squads to hype up the crowd. After the race was over, runners refueled at Waikikitchen with local Hawaiian food. Hawaiian ribbon leis were used as sashes and every finisher got a T-Shirt, Med-al, and discounts to events at the Honolulu Festival that weekend. This was truly one of the most friendly and fun races I have been a part of!

Sharon’s Ride, Run & Walk 2014January 26, 2014Kapiolani Community CollegeBy: Zara Nguyen

Sharon’s Run/Ride is held across the nation in efforts to raise awareness for Epilepsy and to raise funds for the Epilepsy Foundation. You may choose to walk 1 mile, run 5K/10K, ride 35km/75km/100km. Various distances makes this event fun and friendly to participants of all levels. There was even a Keiki (kids) bike safety course.

The 10K course started at the walking path to the entrance to Diamond Head Crater across from Kapiolani Community College. The race route started along the walking path and went up to where the parking of Diamond Head Crater started, then came back down, then into the Kahala neigh-bourhood, then back to Kapiolani Community College where the finish line awaited. With the exception of the hill up towards Diamond Head Crater parking, the rest of the route was very flat. The event was held on an extremely nice and sunny day in late January. This was a casual, fun run (or ride, for some) with many generous volunteers setting up and at aid stations. I hope to participate in this event again in the future.

For a third year in a row, the same people who have been bringing you the famous Honolulu Marathon have brought you the shorter, but just as fun, Hapalua Half Marathon. The Hapalua, which means “half” in Hawaiian, began at the famous Duke Kahanamoku statue in the heart of Waikiki. Runners then went all the way into Chinatown before turning around and running through downtown Honolulu. The hardest part was going around hilly Diamond Head at miles 10 and 11 but after that was over, it was all downhill to the finish line. This race has no time limit so runners and walkers are all welcomed. More than 3,000 runners completed the race this year and were treated to bananas, bagels, malasadas and of course, a well earned shiny medal at the finish line. Sign up early for this race and you will even receive a free in-training t-shirt! Overall this was a great race that I hope becomes a tradition in my running book.

Looney Lagoon 5k Easter Egg and Earth Day RaceApril 19, 2014Lagoon DriveBy: Courtney Osaki

On your mark, get set, hop! There were bunny ears and cottontails galore at this 5K that celebrated both Easter and Earth Day. This race was put on by Stamina which means it was eco-friendly. Timing chips were recycled, finisher med-als were handmade by recycled materials and ceramic, and there was a shoe donation area after the race. The course was completely flat and runners got to pick up an Easter egg before crossing the finish line. Eggs were filled with organic candies or tickets for prizes such as Easter baskets or complimentary training sessions. It was fun for the whole family!

Ford Island 10K Bridge RunApril 5, 2014Ford IslandBy: Courtney Osaki The Ford Island 10K Bridge Run is a fun race for everyone! Runners or walkers, military or non-military, kids or adults, everyone is invited to participate. The course is mostly flat, except for the bridge, and offered beautiful views of Ford Island and Pearl Harbor. It was a very family friendly course and everyone seemed to have fun. Finishers got a t-shirt, magnet from the Pacific Aviation Museum, bananas, and sweet bread.

JAMBA JUICE Bananaman Chase 5K.by Zara Nguyen

My favorite costume this year was Pacman chasing after strawberry girl. Runner up would have been Buzzlight year. The race started at 7AM around Ala Moana Beach Park. 7AM can can be kind of hot in May! So, I can only imagine how ex-cruciatingly hot running 3 miles in a huge costume was for these runners! What I enjoy about this race are the fun, wacky, and high spirited runners and walkers. This year’s bananamen were radio personalities from Star 101.9 and local TV station KHON.Let’s chase the bananaman again next year!Congrats to the winners who will receive a full year of JAMBA JUICE.

North Shore Marathon 2014April 6, 2014North Shore, OahuBy: Zara Nguyen

This was a fantastic race course, starting at Haleiwa to Kaena point, routed along Farrington Highway on the North side of Oahu. The race started at 5AM with crisp chilly winds. I enjoyed the first two hours of the course. We ran two loops around Haleiwa town and most of the runners were together. Two hours in, I could feel the heat creeping up as the sun started rising. Runners then started spacing out. At hour 3, it was scorching hot! About half of the time, I was running without any other runner in sight. Hour 4 came and I wanted to be done, done, done, son!

Training for this race was rather difficult. As everyone enjoyed their holidays: Hal-loween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s… I was on a training schedule. The training schedule meant early Saturday long runs, watching my diet intake of cer-tain food groups and increasing other food groups, leaving parties early and going to bed early each evening. Five months later, the work paid off as I came to check out this local’s race and its amazing course. What I found special to this race was the way the race took care of their runners. Everything was over the top: from the beautifully designed race bibs, to the food at the finish line, the hydration stations and finally, to the commentary finisher items.

What makes this race great:1) A flat course, no hills.2) A beautiful scenic view of Mokuleia Beach for miles along the route3) Beautifully designed finisher medal, beautiful tech men and women’s fit finisher shirts, a commentary finisher glass4) Great hydration and food along the course. The food was provided by Yama’s Fishmarket, treating all finishers to a choice of beef or vegetarian chili and rice.

What you may not enjoy about this race:1) Hour 3 into the run usually gets pretty hot.2) An early start on the North side of Oahu, and the drive there is even earlier.

Zara’s tips for a successful run:1) Drink more water than you normally. Once 8AM hits, you will dehydrate quick.2) Pace yourself, you got 26.2 miles!3) Plan your arrival on race day with extra cushion. The drive is farther than you think.

1. Where have you been?

I've been living in Australia for the last 10 months racing and training. It was perfect preparation with tons of strong triathletes to train with and hot and humid weather.

2. How was your preperation for the Strongman?

Preparation included more rest than usual, but also long training days in the heat. I just hoped that it would be a hot race!

3. Tell us a little bit about the race?

The race was tough! The swim was beautiful, but a mass start was pretty hectic. The bike course was incredibly scenic. The island of Miyakojima is beautiful. The course was very windy and hilly, and started to get hot on the second half of the bike. The run was the hardest marathon I have ever raced. It was brutally hot, but even if it was cooler conditions the hills and wind made it very difficult. The best part of the race is the number of locals that come out. The farmers stop their work and come out to the road to cheer and the kids are all out playing instruments or displaying local dances. The whole town comes out and makes it feel very special.
