ANNUAL RESIDENT CRAFT FAIREach year, in the fall, the residents of Hawthorne show off their talents @ our annual Craft Fair. Theevent is always held on the second Saturday in November. This year the Art and Craft Fair will be heldon November 9, 2013 from 9AM-2PM. Time to mark your calendar.

The sign up sheet has been on the Quad since April and will be removed on October 31st for finalization.

Last years crafters will have first choice of their same table location in the Hall. There is a list of guide-lines attached to the sign up sheet to view, if needed.

We are pleased to present the Show in conjunction with a community wide Open House from our RealEstate office. Open House will be from 10AM-2PM. The later hour will give our resident house sitterstime to come to our Craft Fair first, or they have a choice of volunteering for 1,2,3 or 4 hours. This is thethird year for this successful joint venture. Once again, we will engage the VFW to help park cars fromthe neighboring communities. Our parking lots will be for Hawthorne residents use only.

Our Bocce Club will be serving a great lunch of both hot and cold selections including homemade soupswith to-go containers. Watch your bulletin for a flyer with the complete menu. They are continuing rais-ing funds for much needed new carpeting and resurfacing of Hawthorne's Bocce courts.

All rental fees go directly to Club Hawthorne for the betterment of OUR community. The fees also coverthe cost of advertising and Parking control.

Also mark your calendar to watch TV 98 on October 31st. The show will be allabout our upcoming Craft Fair. We will, also, profile various Clubs that will be rep-resented at our Fair.

A Message from your Safety Committee

It has recently come to our attention that some of our older ceiling light fixtures should be examined forwear. Some recently replaced ceiling light fixtures showed that, over the years, the connection wireshad been damaged by heat. The insulation on the wires was cracked, exposing the copper wire in sever-al places.

At this time, our thoughts as to what may be contributing to this problem are:

- Using light bulbs in excess of the recommend Max of60w -

- 80 to 100w bulbs are being used for more light

- Over time, the added heat causes damage to the wire insulation.

- A couple of the fixtures were missing insulation, which keeps heat from the wires

- Some ceiling lights are being used as night lights

- Age of the fixture

A word of caution -- We are not saying that you will have a fire in your home this afternoon, or ever. Itis something that we feel you should be aware of. The safety committee recommends that you examineor have someone examine all your ceiling light fixtures in the near future. The wires attached to thefixture and the wire coming from the ceiling should both be checked for damage.

There are good replacement light fixtures available under $10. There are several advantages for replac-ing your old fixtures, besides safety reasons. The new high energy (fluorescent) bulbs, use less electrici-ty and produce significantly less heat and last a lot longer. The old 60W bulb can now be replaced by a13W high energy bulb and provide the same amount of light. If you should desire more light, you canbuy a replacement fixture with two sockets. Using two high energy bulbs will provide you with twicethe light, using less energy than the old 60W bulb, There are many more choices out there, bright tosoft white, quick start, with an endless amount of bulb sizes and shapes. You will find the price of thesingle and double packages on the high side. The individual bulb price is greatly reduced if you buy themultiple

(5 - 20) packages. Split a box with a friend/neighbor. The high energy bulbs are not recommended fordimmer switches. If they are not on high, you may hear a crackling or hissing sound.

Kay Lewis Tribute to Our Employees

Thanksgiving is certainly an appropriate time of the year to honor our employees. It is a time of re-flection-a time when we think about all of the good things that we have in our lives and certainly ourdedicated employees are among the blessings that we have here in Hawthorne. Take a few minutes toreflect on all that our employees do for us to make our lives easier and better every day. Our employ-ees serve us continuously and graciously-Let's do a little extra to show them we really appreciatethem. This year Sally Schulte and I will be working hard trying to encourage every member of Haw-thorne to contribute something-whatever you can afford to do. Once again, the box will be in thehall from October 18 to November 26. It is your participation that makes the project successful.Let's make it better than ever! (Submitted by Elise Mrowca)

Wesley Johnson to Conduct

The officers and steering committee for the Hawthorne Community Orchestra are

pleased to announce the return of Wesley Johnson as Musical Director/Conductor for

the coming season. A full schedule of performances is planned with three concerts in

Dan Gorden Hall for our Hawthorne residents and our many friends in the area. You may

wish to look at your 2014 calendars and mark the following dates: Sunday, January 26,

2014, Sunday, March 2, 2014 and Sunday, April 13, 2014. All concerts will be at 3:00 PM .

Wesley has stepped forward to assure that our Community Orchestra continues the rich

tradition we prize as a musical community. We are indeed privileged to have in our

midst a number of very talented musicians. The coming season promises again a time of

enjoyment and satisfaction in the accomplishments of our musicians-another example

of the performing arts as experienced at Hawthorne at Leesburg.

HAWTHORNE ENTERTAINMENT CLUB IS REVIVED

In August, 2012, 8 Hawthorne residents came together to revisit a concept that was successfulin the past called the Hawthorne Entertainment Club ..

The Club's goal is to supplement the various other clubs that provide entertainment, such as theConcert Series, The Saturday Night Dance, Sox and Boots, Boot Scootin' Babes etc. It is intend-ed to bring a variety of entertainment in different venues for the enjoyment of the audience.

So far the Club has presented Mark "Muddyharp" Hodgson and The Leesburg Encore SwingBand at 'The Salute to Our Veterans" with the colors presented by the Hawthorne VFW HonorGuard. There was a special ceremony honoring the WWII veterans.

Wayne Galley is the next entertainer scheduled to appear on October 27, 2013 from 3-5. Ac-cording to MF Music: "Wayne, with his long time experience, has gained a wide reputation forbeing one of the best one man bands in Las Vegas. His dynamic vocal ability, musical skills, and powerful interpretations of popular songs have made him a favorite with audiences all overthe world".

Other scheduled shows are Tres Dees January 21,2014 from 7-9pm, "Muddyharp" trio March24,2014 from 7-9pm and a very special dance featuring "The Johnny Alston Motown Review", afabulous trio that has performed nationally and locally at the City Fire restaurant and others onApril 11,2014, from 7-9 pm.

It is the Club's intention to present events that will not only entertain but give good value for theprice. If there are suggestions, or someone who would like to be on the selection committee, please contact one of the co-chairs, Jeff Carr (353) 454-7697 or Claire Arnold (516) 528-1045.Other members of the committee are George Wolf, Don Nowakowski, Sheila Gibson, JoeRuziicka, Bo Faulconer and Dani Hunter.

BOARD LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE

In March of2013, new HRCA President Frances Creighton nominated me to be the Chair ofthe newBoard Legislative Committee. It was thought that having a committee to focus on relationships with ourelected officials would benefit the community. Other committee members are Dick Blount, DianneDishinger, Chuck Mrowca and Ed Wilcox.

Our General Manager, Roger Slagle received a call from State Representative Larry Metz's office sayingthat he would like to hold a Town Meeting here in Hawthorne. Roger turned the information over to us,and we contacted Representative Metz's officer to facilitate this. In June, State Representative Metz cameto our hall and held the town meeting. After a power point presentation he answered questions from the50+ attendees. Representative Metz and his staff were very pleased with the turnout and the caliber ofquestions from our residents. It was a success.

Twice a year Channel 98 has a program called Today's Issues. The Legislative Committee brain stormedand decided that the upcoming change to our waste disposal system is the issue of most concern to our res-idents. I called County Commissioner Jimmy Conner to see if he could suggest someone knowledgeableabout this topic to come and inform the community. He offered to be that person. On October 21st, hewill appear on Channel 98 to discuss this topic. On October 28th at 2:00 PM, he will hold a Town Meet-ing in the hall to give a presentation and to answer residents' questions. About four times a year he ap-pears on Channel 98 to update the Community on County issues.

In my 20 years in Hawthorne, seldom has a United States Representative ever come to Hawthorne, evenfor Candidate Forums. United States Representative Dan Webster's office has contacted us and November5th, he will appear on Channel 98 and then host a coffee for the residents at 10:00 AM. We will havemore details on this in October.

Currently we are working with State Senator Alan Hays' office to tape a TV show to be broadcast in Janu-ary. We are also on the agenda to speak for our Community at the Lake County State Delegation meetingonOctober 21st at Lake Sumter College in Leesburg.

The Legislative Committee hopes that residents will inform us about their legislative concerns so that wecan try to find knowledgeable people to visit our community and keep us informed.

VOLUNTEERS·

Hawthorne activities run on volunteers who give generously

of their time. Without them Hawthorne would not have so

many wonderful recreational fields to offer. Several activi-

ties are in need of more volunteers. Please take a moment

and think about the activity you love to do and then ask if

they need a volunteer. Thank you to those who volunteer

now and those who will in the future.
