HAWfHORNE LOGO

Recently a resident came to my officeasking just what our Logo signified. I realizethere are many new residents living inHawthorne who are asking the same question.

Wendell Husebo of Husebo Advertising, designed our Logo.

The round sectionrepresents Floridasunshine. The stylized"H" represents ourbeautiful park andtopping both is thecopper roof of the publicbuildings in the park

- identifying Hawthorne.Our eye-catching logo is everywhere -- at

the park's entrance and on billboards. Insmaller sizes it graces the weekly and monthlybulletins, badges, letterhead, T-shirts, etc. Youcan even purchase patches with our logo onthem.

Now whenever you see the logo, you willknow exactly what it stands for. In fact, whenever I am travelling I find myself lookingfor the stickers on cars as they go by. It isamazing where you find Hawthorne residents.

MEMORIAL DAY

Will be celebrated on Monday, May 25.It was during the Civil War when this specialholiday observance had its beginning. In May,1864 two women in Boalsburg, PA, Miss EmmaHunter and Mrs. Mayer, met while decoratingthe graves of relatives who had died in theGettysburg battlefield. After comforting eachother in their sorrow, they agreed to meet thereevery year.

On April 26,1865 ConfederateMemorial Day wasborn because of thevisit of Mrs. SueLandon Faughn, adescendant ofPresident JohnAdams, and otherladies to the militarycemetery in

Vicksburg, MS.On May 5, 1866 in Waterloo, NY, Henry

C. Welles, a druggist, suggested to a veterans'organization that the graves of the dead bedecorated with flowers. Also that same year, the first actual service honoring the deceasedsoldiers was held on May 30, 1866 inRichmond, VA.

On May 30, 1868 Decoration Day wascelebrated nationally by the Grand Army of therepublic, an organization of Union veterans.

'- In 1873, New York was the first state tomake it a legal holiday. Though first

--designated for soldiers lost in battle, Decoration.Day became generally known as Memorial Dayas war heroes from more wars were honored.

Today, Memorial Day events includeparades, and wreath-layings, placing of flowersto honor the dead of all wars.

NEWS AND NOTESAARP 1775

Remember that even though someprograms take a hiatus during the summerthere are many others that do not. The "Mealson Wheels" program for instance is in dire needof drivers throughout the summer months. Many of the regular drivers go North for a fewmonths but the people in need of the meals stillare here and still need their meals delivered. Itonly takes about an hour for a person to do thisand believe me it is very much appreciated.

The recycling of the cans also continuesallsummer, and those cans bring in a good bitof revenue to AARP which is put to good usein December when we distribute our funds todeserving groups.

The blood mobile will continue to visitus. They will be here in June and again inAugust, so please keep them in mind. Allblood donations are for Hawthorne residentsand are greatly needed.

There will be NO general meeting forthe month of May due to the number ofresidents leaving for the summer. Keepwatching the summer "Highlights" for the dateof our next meeting.
