Preface

It was 1934 when the agreement was signed between Barber-Colman USA and “Industrieele & Handels Mij” Amsterdam. Now, 2013 and 79 years later, we still develop, design, produce, market and sell air distribution products that provide an optimum in comfort and which uses a minimum in energy.

The world has changed since then. Luckily people do realize that our environment is important and that, if we want our children to have a happy and healthy life, we have to take care of our planet. With our latest product developments like the Induction-VAV terminals and our range of Chilled Beam products we have pleasure infor-ming your that we contribute to this. Climate laboratory

The purpose of a full-scale climate laboratory test is to give the client, designer and consul-tant maximum security about the installation’s design, in an early stage. Especially when the design is completely new, not often used or when the building has specific characteristics, a climate laboratory test can prevent problems and delays during construction or even after commissioning.

HC Barcol-Air’s climate laboratory has a maximum floor space of approx. 8 x 8 meter with flexible positional walls and ceiling up to a height of 3.3 meter. To perform full-scale tests, the room is built with exact (actual) dimensi-ons. The climate façade simulates the outdoor conditions and can be cooled to simulate winter conditions and heated to simulate summer conditions. Uniquely this climate laboratory has two climate facades from bottom to ceiling, which enables testing of (complicated) corner rooms.

Mock-ups are not only built with actual dimen-sions but also façade, ceiling, furniture, floor covering, convectors and lightning can be built according to project specification. There is also the possibility of building special application rooms like hospital rooms, dealing rooms, labo-ratories and so on.

In the climate laboratory of HC Barcol-Air static tests are performed. This means that thermal conditions in- and outside the mock-up are equal; there is no transmission loss via walls, floor or ceiling.

Data Acquisition System

All measuring data is collected and proces-sed with labVIEW® supported, automatic Data Acquisition System. labVIEW® is a software program by National Instruments for virtual instrumentation.

Measuring robot

The most important part of the measuring system, in the actual size built mock-up, is the measuring robot with accurate air temperature

and velocity sensors which moves around the space. The height of the measuring sensors is according to NEN-ISO standards 0,1 – 0,6 – 1,1 and 1,7 meter above the floor. These heights represent ankles, bottom, trunk and head of the human body. The robot measures the area from floor to ceiling and from front to back of the test room. Extra sensors are mounted on the robot for other heights and different measuring areas to detect possible irregularities (for instance asymmetry) of the air pattern. Extra sensors are also mounted 5 cm below the ceiling to check the air pattern (Coanda effect) of the supply diffusers.

Fixed sensors

Besides the sensors on the measuring robot, there are also sensors mounted on fixed places for primary air temperature, supply air tempera-ture, air volume, reference room temperature, windowpane surface temperature (in- and out-side) and environment temperature.

Accuracy air velocity andtemperature sensors

The accuracy and response time of all sensors apply to the standards set in the ISO 7726 (1998). The temperature sensors have a relative accuracy of 0,1 ºC and a time constant of 2,3 seconds. The air velocity sensors have an accuracy of 0,014 m/s and a time constant of 0,03 seconds.

Standards

The climate laboratory meets the mostrecent standards NEN-ISO 7726 and NEN-ISO 7730. The results of measure-ments and check of the air stream pattern and distribution is generally checked against DIN 1946, part 2. The calculated comfort

parameters are checked against NEN-ISO 7730. It is also possible to check the climate laboratory test results and comfort parameters against to specific project demands.

Presentation test results

Air temperature and velocity measuring results are presen-ted in both graphical and table format. The data acquisi-tion system has a unique cal-culation module to present real time not only air temperature and velocity but also the PMV (Predicted Mean Vote), PPD (Percentage People Dissatis-fied) and DR (Draft Rate). All displayed values are aver-age values per 100 seconds.

Reporting

After the climate laboratory test has beenfinished and discussed with the principal, acomplete and final report is made. This re-port describes in detail under which con-ditions and which specifications the test was performed. The measuring results and conclusion are a written proof of the perfor-mance of the tested installation concept. By recording all data and results accurately, the test can be reproduced.

Product development

Besides testing project specific installation concepts, the climate laboratory is used for product and system research and new

developments. One of HC Barcol-Air’s main competences

is project specific design of air distribution components or modification of standard products. These new products can be tested easily to check whether they apply to the set standards.

CFD simulations

Besides the climate laboratory HC Barcol-Air uses Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation software to develop, design and test new products. This increases the speed of the development process.

Acoustic reverberation room

Introduction

HC Barcol-Air has built a reverberation room for pre-design sound testing of products and systems. This enables HC Barcol-Air to test products and systems for thermal indoor climate as well as sound production and absorption.

Acoustic performance

The test at HC Barcol-Air is executed in a rever-beration room, which has a volume of 65 m³ and a reverberation time of 2.2 - 2.5 seconds.

Measurements are being executed through a cali-brated sound meter fabricated by Delta Ohm type HD2010, this can determine the reverberation time for each room/test set-up individually.

Measurement of inlet sound

The CAV/VAV/FCU will be set-up inside the reverberation room with the outlet connected to the opening towards the adjacent small room. This way a combination of the inlet sound together with the radiated sound will be measured.

Measurement of outlet sound

In this case the CAV/VAV/FCU will be placed in the small adjacent room with the outlet connected towards the reverberation room. Only discharge sound levels will be measured in this case.

Acoustic calculations

The measured sound levels will be corrected with the background noise and the reverberation time of the room, which will both be measured seperately.

The measured sound power levels for the mid ranges of frequency band 125 – 4,000 Hz and NR levels will be presented in table and graph form.

Introduction

Conventional VAV systems have proven in the past to be very efficient in provi-ding an optimal indoor climate. However the latest standard and requirements for energy efficiency and human comfort make it more and more difficult to design conventional VAV systems in new buil-dings. From an energy point of view, the minimum air volume could cause “cold air dumping” and lack of air movement in the room, resulting in occupants discomfort and a consequent decrease in producti-vity.

Induction VAV is the best solution to maintain proper air circulation and com-fort levels reducing the primary treated air to a very minimum (20% of maximum). Without the use of an additional fan, room air will be induced and the required norms for comfort will be achieved.
