It aches because I believe that, among many of our purposes, one of them is to bring heaven on earth, and so when we harm one another, we are doing the opposite of that. But this isn’t new; humanity has been struggling to bring heaven on earth since before Jesus, and even when Jesus walked the earth, humanity struggled. So, how do we bring heaven on earth? When I think about our relationships with one another, I think back to my sermon on Genuine Friendship from April 10. We like to pick and choose who we have a relationship with, and I think that’s where the problem lays, because someone is always left out. Furthermore, that’s where the us versus them mentality comes from I think. And that mentality creates a combativeness that makes us feel like we have to protect ourselves, which often leads to violence. Violence is the opposite of relationship and bringing heaven on earth. We also need to do a better job of taking care of creation. Monday was Earth Day, and as I was heading back to Merrill, I was hearing stories on the radio of people helping to clean up along highways or other forms of creation care. Friends, that’s progress toward bringing heaven on earth, but the fact of the matter is that we wouldn’t have to spend Earth Day cleaning up and taking care of the earth if we did it all the time. Instead, we could be celebrating and giving thanks to the earth on Earth Day. Bringing heaven on earth is about experiencing the kingdom of God here on earth in our relationships with God, one another, and creation. We can’t enjoy its benefits here and now if we don’t maintain those relationships. Sisters and brothers, the more we strive to bring heaven on earth, the better the whole world will be. I know what I am saying seems like an impossibility, but I fullheartedly believe that if we can start to widen our understanding of our purpose and what it means to bring heaven on earth, then it might start to make a difference for everyone. Bringing Heaven on Earth

After the morning service on Maundy Thursday, I was talking with some of the staff, and we

had various theological conversations around doubt and heaven and hell. A lot about that conversation has stuck with me, but after the events in Sri Lanka on Sunday, where a series of bombings in churches and hotels claimed the lives of roughly 300 people, I have been thinking about our conversation on heaven and hell.

When I see tragedies like what happened in Sri Lanka take place, my heart always aches.

I believe one way we can begin to bring heaven on earth is by being in relationship with God, one another, and creation. While we all struggle in our relationship to and with God, I believe that out of the three relationships, we struggle most with our relationship to and with one another and creation.

PLEASE STAY OUT OF WORK ZONESWe have had issues with people walking through the Kulps marked off/blocked off work zones. Did you know that if the DNR comes by (and they DO this for periodic inspections), and sees anyone in the work zone, due to the fact that asbestos is being removed, they will SHUT US DOWN and all work on the roof will stop and we will need to appeal to the government to get the work site back up and running? In fact, by law, the foreman is supposed to STOP and SHUT DOWN the worksite if someone walks through. And he has informed us, he WILL do this. So please ... STOP and take a few more steps to use another entrance or exit from the building and abide by the signs you see ... and please, stay out of work zones. Remember, this is only temporary.

SAVE THE DATE: Pastor Lucas will be installed at Saint Stephens United Church of Christ on May 19. More info. to come!

WHAT IS REALM? ... Realm is the name of the software we use at Saint Stephens to maintain records of our congregation ... the people, the details of their lives that are important for pastors to know, contributions, and soon, the “Groups” you belong to ... whether you are a Sunday School teacher or student, or a volunteer counting money, or help with funeral lunches (Helping Hands), or whatever your connection to Saint Stephens, you may be part of a Group that enables us to communicate with you faster and easier and keep track of who is helping with what.

This is also where you can now set up your electronic giving ... and you can even update your own address, email address, and phone number so we always have your current information accessible.

We would like to get everyone (who has an email address) connected to their personal record on Realm ... so that you can help take control of your personal information and easily do these things and also have immediate access to your contribution history. You do need to have email and Internet access to get into the Realm system.

In the near future, everyone with an email address on file in our system will receive an email from us via the Realm software, with a link to go in and create a password for their personal and family record. We’re telling you this now because it might look odd to you, and if you didn’t know what Realm was or why you were receiving this email, you might think it was junk mail or SPAM.

We think you’ll really like this ability to see and review and revise your own records.

But in order to do this most effectively, we need to get as many email addresses updated as possible. If we already have and use your email address, you don’t have to do anything. BUT if you have an email address and we don’t have it on record at the church, please call Tina or Kim in the office to provide us with your email so we can update your record and be sure you receive an “invite” to set up your access with a password of your choosing.

FEED YOUR SPIRIT . . .Wrapped

But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified.” Suddenly Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came to him, took hold of his feet, and worshipped him. - Matthew 28:5 and 9, NRSV

I travel so much.

Every time my child learns of another trip, another meeting, she pulls me in closer. She becomes, as some would say, “clingy.”

The times I’m headed to the next place I have to go, she

inserts herself—just at the last moment—most forcefully, grabbing my legs, trying her best to linger in the sweet togetherness one moment longer. Even if it means a breakdown before wedging ourselves apart. It happens rarely. But when it does and I walk away, something in me rips. Maybe it does for her, too.

I hear stories about Jesus after the resurrection, on his way somewhere else, and I can identify with something of how my child feels when I have to leave.

In these quick glimpses of God, in those intimate encounters with something holy, I desperately want to cling so tightly to my ultimate protector, my maker. I cling to God because I’m terrified that if I don’t, something bad will happen.

And yet Jesus pries away from the Marys’ grip.

Maybe because Jesus already knows that God’s embrace on us never yields.

I do not know how to help my child reconcile her fears to the demands of the moment. But maybe I can show her, as God shows me, that my embrace extends past any physical barrier.

In meetings, on the road, even when my attention falters, she is still my baby wrapped in the closest grip of my deepest love.

Prayer

In the name of the Parent, and of the Child, and of the Holy Spirit: may we know ourselves sheltered, held, protected and never cast away. Amen.

ADDITION TO BUDGETOn April 8, Church Council approved a motion to add a $4,000 line item for OCWM to the 2019 Budget that was passed at the October 2018 Annual Meeting. This line item was inadvertently missed on the proposed 2019 Budget and was intended to be included in the Budget for this year. If you have any questions, please call the office or speak with a member of Council. This brings our total budget for 2019 to $433,657. The challenge for all of us now is to fully fund the budget so that we can function fully and effectively as a church.

PINE CRESTThe April Pine Crest worship service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, April 25. Members scheduled to assist residents to the service are Kathy Case and Penny Hommerding. Rev. Kyle Carnes will lead the worship service, and Darlene Johnson is the pianist.

THRIVENT “ACTION TEAMS”Are you a member of Thrivent Financial? Did you know you can allocate your Thrivent Choice dollars to Saint Stephens?

We also recently learned from a Thrivent member that Thrivent members can create an “Action Team” twice a year whereby they request Thrivent to share resources to help us with a specific event. Those “resources” include a gift card (like a debit card) we can use for a specific church event, to help defray our expenses in creating the event, such as our Trivia Night, Vacation Bible School, Oktoberfest, etc.

Want to help with this? Talk to a pastor or to Tina in the office to learn what kinds of events we will be holding to see how you and Thrivent can help!

LOOKING FOR LITURGISTS (a/k/a READERS)We would like to have members of the congregation become more involved in worship by participating as liturgists. This involves reading the Call to

Worship, the Scripture Lesson, and the Prayer of Dedication.

Everyone is encouraged to participate! If you are concerned about pronunciations or anything else having to do with the reading, you may contact either of the pastors, who would be happy to help. A sign up sheet is located on the kiosk in the Kuck Lounge. Please consider signing up!

WEDNESDAY EVENING WORSHIPPERSThere will be NO Wednesday evening worship service on Wednesday, April 24. Wednesday evening worship will resume on Wednesday, May 1, at 6:00 PM.

CHOIR REHEARSALChoir rehearsals resume next Wednesday, May 1, at our reguarlarly scheduled time on Wednesdays at 7:00 PM. There will be no Choir rehearsal on Wednesday, April 25, 2019. New members are always welcome! Come as you are and join us at rehearsal.

UNDER THE BRIDGE RESUMESDave Raddenbach is once again collecting items to help the homeless living under the bridge in the Wausau area. His first delivery of clothing, non-perishable food, and sandwiches was Wednesday, April 3. Every Wednesday afternoon for the duration of the program (until fall), he will go. Donations of socks, tshirts, pants, hats, and jackets (mostly for men) and small cans of pop top spaghetti, ravioli, fruit, etc., may be dropped off in the office, or you can give them to Dave on Monday at Dinner @ Five. Dave would also welcome donations of bread, cold cuts, and cheese for making sandwiches. Questions? Call Dave at 715.722.0700

PRAY-ERS NEEDEDCan you use the telephone? Can you pray? Then we need YOU! We want to expand our “Prayer Chain” ... What does that mean? If you are willing and able to receive a phone call with a prayer request, write that down and then call the next person

on the list to pass it along, and then fervently pray for that prayer request, you can do this! Call Tina in the office and ask to be added to the prayer chain. (715.536.7322)FOOD FOR KIDS

Want to make a donation to support the Food for Kids program Saint Stephens adopted? Make your check payable to: Food for Kids and drop it into the collection plate or drop it off or mail it to the church office.

CONTRIBUTIONS AND CATCHING UPIt’s been kind of a rough winter--even to the point of cancelling worship one weekend--and snow removal and heating expenses have been higher than expected. If you can dig deep to ensure our bills continue to be paid on time and that we are able to fully fund our budget with your regular contributions, we can keep doing great things here at Saint Stephens!

Just a reminder that NOW! contributions will be used to complete large and specific NOW! improvements we need to make here at Saint Stephens, but your regular weekly offerings are also important to the continued operation of our church on a day to day basis.

OGHS SUNDAYOne Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) has been celebrated in our church on one Sunday each year for many years. We will do so again this year on Sunday, May 5.

Each and every day, the news reminds us that we continue to live in a hurting world. Wars and conflict continue to plague us ... hatred and mistrust are all too common ... and hunger and starvation are a reality for way too many of God’s children. The Gospel message is very clear: You and I need to be part of the solution. OGHS presents us with this opportunity. The mission statement for One Great Hour of Sharing states it well:

OGHS ...

Gives food where there is hunger.

Gives medicine where there is sickness.

Gives hope where there is hopelessness.

OGHS envelopes will be available in this Sunday’s church bulletin and in the church pews. The collection will be formally received on Sunday, May 5. On behalf of the “Least of These,” please be generous. Thank you.
