SPECIAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING - January 14 ASH WEDNESDAY - February 14

UPCOMING EVENTS

Christmas Eve OfferingIn December Church Council decided to again give away our 2017 Christmas Eve offering, to move forward in a spirit of great generosity and love. The offering received at all three Christmas Eve services, and envelopes designated

“Christmas Nativity” were earmarked for a cause that is near and dear to our hearts

at Saint Stephens ... Food For Kids ... the program we adopted in mid 2017 providing school children with supplementary food for the weekend.

The grand total has not yet been finalized pending entry of all of the year-end envelopes, but stay tuned to learn how much was collected for Food For Kids!

UNDECKING THE HALLSPlease mark your calendar and plan to help undecorate and clean up the sanctuary and our worship space on Saturday, January 13, 2018, at 7:00 AM. We will need many hands to pitch in to get trees and wreaths taken down, decorations packed away until next year, and pine needles vacuumed up.

SPECIAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETINGBe sure to attend worship on Sunday, January 14, at 9:00 AM and then to stay afterward for a Special Congregational Meeting. Your new Council and Officers for 2018 will be installed and the congregation will be voting on whether to move forward with a Capital Campaign! Prayerfully consider your thoughts and commitment to such a campaign and then be there to vote. Every vote counts!

Remember ...

SCRIP costs you NOTHING to use in place

of cash!

CONTRIBUTION ENVELOPES FOR 20182018 contribution envelopes are here. If you had envelopes in 2017, your number will stay the same for 2018. All envelopes are organized in numerical order by envelope number, so if you know your number, you can go straight to your numbered and labeled box of envelopes and locate it easily. If you don’t remember your number, a “cheat sheet” is located near the contribution envelopes. Look for your name on this alphabetized list (by your last name) and you will see your envelope number to the left of your name, so you can find your numbered envelopes.

Boxes of envelopes are located near the coat closet in the narthex, not far from the Scrip selling table.

If you did NOT have any envelopes in 2017 and would like some for 2018, please stop in the office during normal business hours and we will be happy to get you a box!

If you will be giving electronically and no longer want envelopes issued to you, please call the office.

FEED YOUR SPIRIT . . .Like a Box of Chocolates

“And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah . . . .” - Matthew 1:6

“Momma always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.”

This famous line from Forrest Gump rings true for many of us. Life is not all sweet and smooth. Life is embedded with stubborn nuts and a host of unpleasant ingredients hiding beneath the outer coating.

Any authentic appraisal of life has got to take the good, the bad and the ugly into full account.

The writer of Matthew’s gospel must have had this in mind when in recalling the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the writer pointedly calls our attention to one of the great scandals in that genealogy. The writer deliberately interrupts the flow of patriarchal enumeration to say that one of the greatest patriarchs—indeed the patriarch with whom Jesus is most closely associated—fathered a

son with another man’s wife.

Notwithstanding King David’s pervasive veneration in Jewish culture, the writer of Matthew does not skip or gloss over the fact that King David’s adulterous affair with Uriah’s wife is what gave birth to another great king of Israel, Solomon.

What a mixed box of chocolates!

Does adultery erase David’s greatness?

Does America’s original sin of slavery nullify its moral fiber?

Does scandal in Jesus’ genealogy and the scandal attached to his unusual birth make him less worthy of our devotion?

Does the commercialism of the Advent season render its meaning null and void?

Or . . .

Does God work through all of our human flaws and dysfunctions to move us toward the Light . . . in spite of ourselves.

An old preacher once told me that God can use a crooked stick to draw a straight line.

Prayer

Hallelujah! God, may your strength be made perfect in our weakness. Amen.

By Kenneth L. Samuel

BREAKING BREADSaint Stephens will be sponsoring “Breaking Bread” (community dinner) on Thursday, January 18, from 4:30 PM until 6:00 PM. This is an event that we have sponsored for several years and it is open to the public free of charge. It is held once a month at the Eagles Club and many area churches as well as other civic groups are sponsors.

This event requires volunteers to make it a success. Pre-event set up, kitchen help, serving the food/beverages, and post-event clean up are needed. We also provide dessert, so if you like to bake, donations of bars and cookies are greatly appreciated.

The menu that we are providing is: hot ham sandwiches, cheesy potatoes, and coleslaw, along with dessert and beverages.

There are signup sheets in the Kuck Lounge for the tasks mentioned.

Thank You!

We Need Altar FlowersWant to honor the memory of a loved one?

Or celebrate a happy event? Why not say it with flowers ... on the altar, that is!We are in need of sponsors to provide bouquets to go on the altar and beautify our worship space. What a beautiful offering! Call or sign up in the office to sponsor flowers for a particular worship service. Or, plan in advance for summer flower gardens and sign up to bring a fresh cut bouquet from your very own flower garden during summer! Live plants are also welcome.

ADVENT 2017 ... CARRYING IT FORWARDAdvent 2017 is over. It’s true. And your holidays probably whizzed by faster than the presents were unwrapped and wrapping paper cast aside on Christmas morning. But there is still time to “provoke wonder” in your life.

Now that the shopping is done and the eggnog consumed, put your feet up and dig into that Advent box you were “always meaning” to explore.

Take some time to do some of the activites and extend the most meaningful parts of the season by inviting some wonder into your life ... and sharing that wonder with the people around you. It’s okay if you didn’t “do” the Advent box during Advent.

Make a conscious choice to “provoke wonder” in your life beyond the Christmas season, and enjoy the wonder found in this box ... no matter what day it is. (But if it makes you feel any better, it is still the Christmas season ... i.e., the 12 days of Christmas are not yet over!)

Dare we say it? The time to provoke wonder is ... now.

While we have contracted for our snow removal, there are times when they may not be here immediately after the snow falls to get the sidewalks cleared, such as during worship services. If you can lend a hand on Sunday mornings by occassionally picking up a shovel or spreading some salt, we’d appreciate it!
