Finding Loveby Unknown

We were given: Two hands to hold. Two legs to walk. Two eyes to see.Two ears to listen. But why only one heart?

Because the other was given to someone else. For us to find.

Letter from the Editor

Another season has started, fall is coming to North America; the trees are losing leaves and changing colors. Here in Florida, we don't see many leaves change colors, but we do have a few trees that go from green, to gold, then red. I miss the changes of the trees at times, but then I see the palm trees and remember that they are one of my favorite trees. I love them right by the ocean on a lovely sunny day.

I am looking forward to the cooler weather we get for a few months soon. The kids will have to wear long pants to school and bring out their coats. It's funny---I remember living in Alaska in the winter and going to school in shorts. I guess that you adapt to life once you've lived in the cold for a while. I can't believe it's almost Halloween, and then Thanksgiving and Christmas are right around the corner! It will be interesting to see what outfits the kids pick for Halloween. This month's giveaway is from PoBoys Shrimp Shack. Please make sure to visit the Giveaway section on our website for more details.

When you find it, YOUR RESEARCH STOPS AND YOU DON'T WANT TO LEAVE IT ANYMORE...I'm talking about what happened to me when I came across (during my sleepless nights of research and "navigation") an online "CONCEPT STORE." Serena, the creator of this MODERN, but also warmly COZY space created a website called BabyFashionLab. It's an online store with an incredible SENSE OF TASTE to make shopping for us moms safe, practical and a fun "haven!" - Fiammisday.com Blogger Simona from Florence, Italy

Clothing is the secret potion to success. Superman has known this for a while. In certain clothes he’s a regular guy named Clark Kent—but put on the right suit and he can conquer the world. Same person—new clothes!

Imagine feeling like you are Superman every single day. You would kick intimidation's ass. You would confidently walk into any room. The promotion you’ve been dreaming of would suddenly become reality.

It’s as easy as wearing the right suit! Are you wearing the right suit?

How to Pick the Perfect Handbag

The fastest way to create a polished and professional look is to pay attention to the details of your entire outfit. If you walk into a big meeting holding papers and searching around for a pen, your entire look appears unorganized, no matter what you’re wearing. Instead, keep everything in a beautiful day bag that fits everything you need for work. Use these tips before buying your next bag.

1. Take Measurements

Measure the items you commonly use and carry with you for work. How big is your laptop? How wide are the folders you use for new clients? Knowing these measurements will ensure you purchase a bag that is big enough for all of your needs.

2. Give it a test drive.

Before settling on a bag give it a test drive. Wear it around the store as you look at other things. Does it

sit comfortably on your shoulder? Is it already heavy with nothing in it? Once you’re home don’t remove the tags until you’ve packed the bag for a typical day at work to see how everything fits and feels.

3. Have fun with it.

Typically your work bag is an item you pick up multiple times a day and use everyday, so it should be a bag you really love. Choose one in a fun color, with an interesting lining, or add an accessory like a scarf to change up the look.

With Fall comes thoughts of Halloween and Thanksgiving---just around the corner. Even those who live in Southwest Florida, where I am at this time; associate Fall with leaves of red and gold, pumpkins, and harvest fests. This is the time families are heading out in search of the Great Pumpkin Patch and corn mazes, as well as fruits and vegetables to put up for the winter. So go out and take a drive through your local area and beyond---getting there can be half the fun! After a quick online search I found the site, Pumpkin Patches and More.org, where I was surprised to find pumpkin patches from Alaska to Florida. The site also lists places that have hayrides and Fall Festivals, pumpkin recipes, Halloween History and statistics, and more.

Several years ago we went with my sister to Bob’s Corn and Pumpkin Farm in Snohomish, Washington. It was our first visit to a real country pumpkin patch! The drive through rural Washington was relaxing and fun with fall leaves just starting to turn.

The Market was fun for Northern Girls.

Gold and red leaves of fall with horses grazing in the field.

All in the family.

Bob's Corn and Pumpkin Farm family home.

Pumpkins galore, right behind the farmer's house! Picking pumpkins is fun for kids & adults.

Page 7: Heartbeat Magazine October 2013 Edition

5

If you’re not in the country, you can still get your pumpkins at local farmer’s markets, church and community events, or even at your local Publix Grocery Store! Happy Harvest Time!

The country store has more than jams & jellies.

Just like in the old days, but no horse.

Adults' corn maze...there's also an easier one for the kids.

All aboard for the hayride!

An interview with Diana McCoy, a Naples Realtor:

How did you figure out what type of career you would love?I received my bachelor's degree in marketing from USF and was employed by a large developer in Naples. While working with the onsite sales agents, I became interested in the real estate sales aspect. I sat for the exam and became a full time Realtor in 1999! I've been loving it ever since! You are self employed and you are everything: customer service, marketing, one-stop shop, a full time business, and you have to run it like a business to be successful. Behind the scenes is full time, the flip side of the business is you have flexibility and you are your own boss and you're totally responsible for everything.

What has been a fun part of your career?Meeting people and working with people all over the world. I have the luxury of selling real estate in one of the most beautiful places in the world. My best customer is someone who I can work side by side with to find a home and lifestyle that fits their needs. I am in real estate because I love helping people figure out what's best for them.

What kind of homes do you love selling?I love showing what the potential is of the property and that it's going to fit the clients needs. I play detective and I love walking into the home and seeing what they are wanting to see.

Do you have any specialities?I specialize in North Naples and have lived here since 1987. The new word for North Naples is now called Uptown. I have properties listed in Saturnia Lakes and it helps that I also live in the community.

Is there a heartfelt company cause you support? This month is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. My dog is a shelter dog and this is something truly heartfelt. I give part of the proceeds from my sales to a shelter of my choosing. She is a rescue and we've had her for 2 1/2 years. I almost didn't see her as she was recovering from a surgery. She had a partner and I wasn't interested in taking two dogs. The shelter brought both dogs to our home and all our neighbors came over to see them. I wanted to have a girl dog and we decided we wanted to adopt her. Everyone cried and we were so happy. We were told the other dog was adopted by another family. Suzie Q has been a wonderful addition to our family.

Health & WellnessQ: How can I be Happier?

A: Apply these 9 Tips to improve your happiness.

Are you happy? Being happier doesn't have to be a long-term ambition. You can start right now. In the next 30 minutes, tackle as many of the following suggestions as possible. Not only will these tasks themselves increase your happiness, but the mere fact that you've achieved some concrete goals will boost your mood.

1. Raise your activity level to pump up your energy. If you're on the phone, stand up and pace. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Put more energy into your voice. Take a brisk 10-minute walk. Even better...

2. Take a walk outside. Research suggests that light stimulates brain chemicals that improve mood. For an extra boost, get your sunlight first thing in the morning.

3. Reach out. Send an e-mail to a friend you haven't seen in a while, or reach out to someone new. Having close bonds with other people is one of the most important keys to happiness. When you act in a friendly way, not only will others feel more friendly toward you, but you'll also strengthen your feelings of friendliness for other people.

4. Rid yourself of a nagging task. Deal with that insurance problem, purchase something you need, or make that long-postponed appointment with the dentist. Crossing an irksome chore off your to-do list will give you a rush of elation.

5. Create a more serene environment. Outer order contributes to inner peace, so spend some time organizing bills and tackling the piles in the kitchen. A large stack of little tasks can feel overwhelming, but

by Shelly Aristizabal of Healthy Living Concierge

often just a few minutes of work can make a sizable dent. Set the timer for 10 minutes and see what you can do.

6. Do a good deed. Introduce two people by e-mail, take a minute to pass along useful information, or deliver some gratifying praise. In fact, you can also...

7. Save someone's life. Sign up to be

an organ donor, and remember to tell your family about your decision. Do good, feel good? It really works!

8. Act happy. Fake it 'til you feel it. Research shows that even an artificially induced smile boosts your mood. And if you're smiling, other people will perceive you as being friendlier and more approachable.

9. Learn something new. Think of a subject that you wish you knew more about and spend 15 minutes on the Internet reading about it, or go to a bookstore and buy a book about it. But be honest! Pick a topic that really interests you, not something you think you "should" or "need to" learn about.

Some people worry that wanting to be happier is a selfish goal, but in fact, research shows that happier people are more sociable, likable, healthy, and productive and they're more inclined to help other people. By working to boost your own happiness, you're making other people happier, too.

My friend Melinda Nagy is Simply Chic in these photos! Chic - meaning "stylish" or "smart," is an element of fashion. I met Melinda at a baby shower and she did such a beautiful job photographing the new mom-to-be that when I saw her photos on Facebook I was an instant fan. Melinda is a professional photographer and I've had the pleasure of working with her for my daughter's 5th birthday and several cover photos for The Heartbeat Magazine.

8

I asked Melinda what the story was behind her beautiful photos:

I simply wanted some photos for my business...something related to photography, of course. This is how I came up with the "Photography is Timeless" theme. Memories have been captured since the invention of cameras and I wanted to incorporate an old, antique camera with a '20s era outfit in a shoot. I also wanted to pair that scene with a more modern, more current photographer scene in which I used my own Canon camera as a prop. I imagined a world of class, pearls, hats, lace and textures specific to the 20s era. I have to give credit to my good friend Angelina of Angelina Fusco Photography for the wonderful shot. We both were in our element with the vintage theme. It was one of my favorite shoots, to date, and I don't even like to be in front of the camera!

They placed both diaphragm electrodes in hope that it will regenerate the phrenic nerve on the left side. They explained he should be able to breath off the ventilator for 8 to 10 hours with hope to be completely off once his left diaphragm starts to function in the future. We are very happy and hopeful! Thank you God, and for everyone's prayers!

Look who came to PICU at University Hospital in Cleveland. Petie the Pony is truly one of a kind. He lives at the Victory Gallop in Bath, Ohio. It is a program for children. Petie has been visiting children with illnesses since 1997. He loves riding up elevators, trotting down hallways, and making room-to-room visits to bring smiles

and a little cheer to each child he meets. Petie is Shetland Pony mix and is 3'3" and weighs 380 lbs. His favorite treats are peppermint candy, popcorn and carrots. Petie's favorite activity is hanging out with the kids. He has been on Animal Planet and Miracle Pets. He also has magazine articles in Time and National Geographic for kids, Readers Digest and People.

from the breathing machine but he is unable to breath on his own at this time and needs the support.

In September we had a conference call with Cleveland University Hospital who does the diaphragm pacers. Then we had to wait for the insurance to approve the procedure and Austin was transported via Medway Air to Cleveland, Ohio for the surgery this October.

The diaphragm is the body’s most important breathing muscle. It separates your abdomen from your chest. A diaphragmatic pacemaker, is a surgically implanted device used to help patients breathe and stimulates a normal breath. When an electrical current is passed through the electrodes, the diaphragm contracts, expanding the chest cavity, causing air to be sucked into the lungs. When the nerve is not stimulated, the diaphragm relaxes and air moves out of the lungs. Patients like Austin, with high-spinal cord injury, need a ventilator. When Austin gets a pacer this will help him breathe on his own without the mechanical device of a ventilator. This will give Austin a higher quality of life. And in some cases it has assisted in bringing back the normal breathing function.

Dr. Onders was Austin's Doctor at the Cleveland University Hospital. He implanted a diaphragm pacing device in Christopher Reeve (Superman) in February 2003. During the procedure the Nurse practitioner Mary Jo. provided us with updates on Austin's care. They had to separate lots of scar tissue from the previous abdominal surgery that he

Bento Box School Lunches

Did you ever wonder what your kids were really eating from their school cafeteria lunches? I went to lunch a few weeks ago with my grandkids and was not impressed. While they were reported as “well balanced” and “healthy,” they hardly looked palatable (to me, anyway). And my grandson hardly ate anything! So, I began to look for some interesting things to pack in a school lunch and ways to prepare them at home. Foods that kids will actually enjoy and eat. At first I considered Lunchables, but thought they were a little costly and limiting. As you can see, homemade (on the right) is much cheaper!

So, still on this track, I came across something I’d heard of before, but associated only with Japanese meals: Bento Box Lunches. As you may know, Japanese meals at a restaurant are sometimes served in decorated, compartmentalized dishes. This keeps each food separate from the other and looks really good. So Bento started out as a Japanese box lunch and still is popular in Japan with children and adults, alike. Now the idea has spread across the world. Many blogs and sites such as Disney.com and Pinterest are posting these lunches and they range from the simple to the labor intensive. I would go somewhere in-between, but do something extra for special occasions or when I had extra time. Bento Box Lunches are similar to the Lunchables concept, only with homemade you have more control over price, variety, and quality of foods you use.

A great site for how to prepare these lunches and over 1,000 examples of Bento Box Lunches can be found at Wendy Thorpe Copley’s online blog, Wendolonia, at http://wendolonia.com/blog/. Wendy lives in San Francisco with her husband and two young sons. Her book, Everyday Bento: 50 Cute and Yummy Lunches to Go will be released in February 2014 and is now available for pre-order.

by Cheryl Flothe

I know the main reasons people have their kids buy lunches at school is saving precious time and the kids feel cool buying lunch---but if they don’t eat it, they do without the rest of the day. Maybe we can start a new trend that other kids might want to try too! Maybe it will become cool to “Bento!”

Bento Box with ham, cheese, crackers, fruit, & veggies

Note: All Bento Box Lunch Pictures were used with permission from Wendy Thorpe Copley and can be seen on her online blog.

Steps to Creating a Bento Box:1. Foods to Use - Keep the lunch well balanced with protein (meat and cheese); bread, crackers, or tortillas; vegetables; fruit; and a juice box or milk. A small treat is always good, as well, especially seasonal. It’s important to use foods the kids will eat and enjoy.2. Plan the lunches so you have the ingredients on hand a week at a time. You can prepare a few days at a time and stack them in your frig, just adding a sandwich or wrap the night before.3. Use pieces of bread, cheese, and meat left from using cookie cutters for other meals. 4. How to Organize - Look at Bento Box lunches online or use your imagination, always consulting with the kids. 5. Pack foods in so they don’t move around, otherwise the lunch will be a mess (they will get shaken in backpacks, etc.)6. Divide up wet from dry so each item stays the right consistency. Make sure lids are on tight!

Equipment Needed:1. Divided, lidded containers similar to those pictured above (available at Walmart, K-Mart, or online at http://www.laptoplunches.com/ and other sources). 2. Small lidded containers for condiments, jello, etc.3. Cupcake papers (or silicone cupcake cups).4. Cookie cutters of various shapes (stars, circles, etc.).5. A sharp knife and cutting board.6. A soft sided lunch bag with space for cool pack, juice and utensils.

In today’s busy world, work, activities outside the home, and other commitments, we sometimes neglect an important concept: family time. Have meals together, when possible; talk about your days; read with your young ones; play games; praise them when they do well, show them the way to improve when they don’t; let them know you care. And that goes for parents, grandparents, and kids. We’re all in this together. Here are some quotes to put it into perspective. The first one, Children Learn What they Live, by Dorothy Law Nolte; I saw on our pediatrician’s wall when my kids were small, over thirty years ago. It still has much meaning for me.

My friend Mary Wiggins is the local Chair for Women of Vision SWFL Chapter. This October they had their Fall Get-Together and invited Kelly Aronne-Crigler, World Vision Child Sponsorship Ambassador. She shared her experience of meeting her sponsored child in Tijauna and how it truly was such a blessing. With World Vision you have the opportunity to do Vision trips and visit the children you sponsor. Kelly is a busy mom of five and said yes to God as he tugged on her heart to be a voice for those in need. She has done many fundraising events and one that I found interesting was the Hoops of Hope. She organized this basketball shoot-a-thon to help raise money for World Vision children.

Women of Vision is a volunteer ministry of World Vision - a Christian relief and development organization - which equips women to serve impoverished and oppressed women and children worldwide.

The Women of Vision SWFL Chapter are dedicated to reaching out specifically to the Immokalee area, and to global ministries as they become available. They have made a commitment to "Celebrate The Girl" each month by hosting "Girls Club" in Immokalee, Florida.

The Chapter volunteers each month to help make Girls Club a success. Because the ministry is growing they are looking to add volunteers. Your contribution will be most impactful to these wonderful children. Please email Lane Raskauskas at [email protected] for more information.

If you would like more information about this local Naples, Florida chapter you can visit www.womenofvisionswfl.com. If you live outside the area, visit www.womenofvision.org.
