KS2 Science

The Science department have been busy exploring the rock cycle, mountains and soils with some KS2 children from Newlands Primary School, over the last two weeks. The children learnt about soil, what happened when it was heated and what deposits remained. They then, went on in teams to build their own volcano and see the chemical reaction.

We are working towards our ASDAN Awards and had to complete a number of tasks. First we had to research sports and leisure activities and choose one to try. We went to Tamworth Snow Dome to have a skiing lesson. We were really worried before but excited and had a great time. Some of us did really well, some of us kept falling over and doing the splits. Our instructor was really pleased with us and said we were ready to go higher. We also had to plan and organise a train trip to Birmingham. Our conductor was brilliant and showed us the drivers cab. We spent a day in the Bullring Centre, learning how to find things in a department store and interviewing shop and restaurant people about their work. We also ate at a Japanese sushi bar which was good experience because we used chopsticks and tried new food. There was an amazing bull made out of jelly beans. Finally, we have had to visit a local beauty spot so have been to Market

Bosworth Park. It was a nice time to go because there were lots of baby ducks, geese & water fowl and we even found an empty duck eggshell. We did lots of activities about the environment and took lots of photographs including ones of beautiful blue irridescent dragonflies. We had to be very patient. Its great fun doing a ASDAN Award but lots of hard work and we have to try new things that can make us a bit nervous. We’re looking forward to visiting a museum and entertaining a group of people plus showing them around.

Zac Cummings is 14 years old, dyslexic and a brilliant artist! Zac has always loved to draw and is very visually aware. In the autumn of 2009 Zac applied for a grant from Leicestershire County Council, 'Find Your Talent' team. He was awarded £250 in January 2010. With the support of his friend Community Artist Winsome Ruddock as mentor Zac has gone on to produce a fantastic body of work. The Gallery, Hinckley Library,Hinckley Leicestershire LE10 0AT. This will run from 5/7/10 to 13/8/10 and Zac will be present for a 'meet the artist' opportunity on Thursday 8th July 5.30 to 7.30 (Hinckley Mayor has confirmed her attendance) and for a family interactive day on Saturday 10th July. Zac has come up with the idea of producing a 'Community Canvas' on the Saturday encouraging others to have a go at his style of art! There will be other activities too! Also on 19th July 2009 Zac will be attending and displaying his work at The British Dyslexia Association's Open Day in Leicester. They have also asked if he will display his work at a special

exhibition of dyslexic artist's work in November to promote National Dyslexic Awareness Week. He has arranged to have his 'skull' image screen printed onto t-shirts, and Born Extreme, Hinckley, has agreed to take them for sale, visit bornextreme.co.ukTo think 6 months ago he had not put any paint on a canvas ever, and that all of these images were within him is incredible — he is truly an inspiration! Visit to the College Festival Fashion Show

Mrs Prime & Mrs Macfarlane accompanied some Year 8 girls to the Hinckley & North Warwickshire College Festival Fashion Show. The colour and texture of the fabrics used in the garments was great fun and very inspirational. We also looked round the Art, Graphic Design, and Photography exhibitions that were taking place. The sketch books and ideas boards showing thought processes were really interesting and gave us a new perspective on what to focus on when exploring a new projects in the future.
