Selfregulating Heating Cable

The ELSR heating cable can be used for frost protection and maintaining constant temperatures for receptacles, pipes, valves and gutters etc. Except for the connections, the heating cable may be immersed in fluids. If used in an aggressive environment (the Chemicals or Petrochemicals industry), we lag the heating cable with a special chemically resistant outer jacket (flouropolymer), option “BOT”.

Function:Selfregulating heating cables consist of two parallel bus wires embedded in a networked plastic heating element, doped with surroounding carbon particles. If the temperature increases dur-ing operation, the plastic expands due to molecular expansion and the distances between the carbon particles increases. Resistance increases and output drops. When it cools down, this process is reversed and output increases.

This physical property not to exceed the specified temperatures also facilitates the cross-routing of self-regulating cables and managing without a temperature cut-out device.

EEx-approvalSAN selfregulating heating cable can be installed in hazardous areas, when the cable a.o. is equipped with special termination kit. Contact our sales department for further information.

Approvals:EEx e II T6EEx ed II C T6

Ex-certificate according to EN Eexe II T6, LCIE 96.D6141X.

Advantages:• Self-regulating with adaptable output• Various temperature range applications• Demand-orientated output grading• High chemical resistance• No temperature limitation required• Can be cut to length from the roll

• Self-regulating• Two nominal outputs• Can be cut to length from the roll• Moisture proof• UV-resistant

Applications:ELSR-M is a self-regulating heating cable with a lightweight (“micro”) design, suitable for use in industry and house construction. The applications range from frost protection to temperature maintenance for pipes and receptacles. (Tempera-tures up to 65ºC). For example, the cable is used when heating tube bundle cables for water analysis.

The food approved outer jacket is a special highlight of the ELSR-M and you can order it as variant ELSR-M-BF. Alternatively, you can be provided with the M tape, also with aluminium foil and a thermoplastic outer jacket (ELSR-M-AO) or with braiding and a thermoplastic outer jacket.

The ELSR-M heating cable offers you the smallest possible dimensions, is highly flexible in its application and perfectly suited to use for short heating circuits. A further feature: the ELSR-M-BF heating cable can be laid fully immersed in water, even its end contacts are moisture proof!

• Self-regulating• Two nominal outputs• Can be cut to length from the roll• Moisture proof

Applications:The self-regulating heating cable ELSR-W (hot water) is used for receptacles, pipes, valves and several other applications with temperatures between 30°C and approx. 80°C.

Except for the connections, the heating cable may be fully immersed.

The ELSR-W self-regulating heating cables are frequently used to heat oil and fat lines, for example in the foodstuff industry. But also its use for drainage lines in canteens and (large scale) kitchens makes good sense, avoiding fat and oil deposits by heating.

Roof and gutter protection from snow and ice build up

• Automatically adjusts heat output in response to changes in ambient temperature

• Can be cut-to-length with no wastage• Will not overheat or burnout, even when overlapped• Full range of accessories available• Optional fluoropolymer outer jacket for use in corrosive en-

vironments• Available for 110-120VAC and 220-277 VAC

Description:Snow that has built up on a roof will start to melt as a resultof either exposure to the sun or from heat rising from the build-ing below. As the melted snow runs from the roof into cold gutters and drain pipes, it can re-freeze forming layers of ice that can con-tinue to build up until the flow is blocked. This can result in damaged drains and gutters. In addition, water can get into the roof and walls of the building, leading to expensive structural damage such as broken roof tiles, damaged plaster and facades, etc.

The SolutionWe have the solution in the form of G-Trace.The self-regulating characteristics of the heating tape meansthat the cable can adjust it’s heat output in accordance withthe ambient temperature. In snow and icy water, the heating cable operates at full power. As the snow melts and the water drains away, GTrace self-reg-ulates to half power while it dries. As it gets warmer, so G-Trace gradually reduces it’s output. The G-Trace system is safe and reliable. As self-regulation prevents overheating, G-Trace can even be installed in plastic gutters and with the UV resistant outer jacket, the heating cable is protected from the sun’s harmful rays – thus making it totally durable and reliable. G-Trace provides a cost effective, preven-tive maintenance solution to damaged roof tops and gutters and the system consumes no more power than it takes to prevent ice formation.

Design and installation of a G-Trace system is simple as there are no fixed lengths. The heating tape can be cut to length dur-ing installation. G-Trace is cut off the reel and placed in the gut-ter. The heating tape is hung down into the down pipe without the need for spacers. All systems - from the simplest to the most elaborate – use the same components, thereby providing maximum flexibility and ease of design.

Selfregulating heating tapeType FS+ up to 225°C*

A high temperature self-regulating heating cable.

• 225°C exposure temperature withstand, (energised or switched off).

• Inherently temperature-safe. (ITS)• Power outputs to 60W/m at 10°C• External temperature controls not necessary

Description:FS+ is a high temperature self-regulating heating cable, having an exposure limit of 225ºC, energised or not. It may be provided with a continuous extruded metal jacket for applications where high mechanical strength is required or a metal braid where flex-ibility is preferred. The continuous metal outer jacket is ductile, yet withstands high mechanical loads, thus averting damage when being installed in arduous environments. Easy termina-tions, cut-to-length. Safest ever self-regulating product range for high temperature exposure; will not overheat even when exposed to 225ºC when energised or switched off as it is inher-ently temperature-safe. ATEX/IECEx Approved.

Inherently Temperature-Safe:“ The inherent ability to self-regulate at a temperature level below the maximum product rating and withstand tempera-ture of the insulating materials, without the need for tempera-ture control.” Similar competitor self-regulating products are typically limited to a maximum energised temperature, typically 120ºC at which point, their retained power output prevent the cable from self-regulating at its own limiting temperatures. All such products require temperature control to ensure their own temperature safety.

Heating cable connection- and mounting technique DomoClick

SimpleWith few clutches and only a knife for deinsulation, the ELSR heating cables can be connected to each other by using the DomoClick, which consists of 3 parts.

SafeEach mounting step is performed open and can be controlled from outside. The double switch knife on the top and in the bottom guarantees a safe connection.

FastThe Click mounting takes only few minutes, as only four mounting steps are required:

1. Push cover and cone over the heating cable.2. Deinsulate the outer protection cover.3. Lead the heating cable into the DomoClick.4. Fasten the terminals and close the cover.

Maximum Pipe/Workpiece temperatures:The surface of the heater must not exceed the maximum withstand temperature of its constructional materials. This is ensured by limiting the pipe or workpiece temperature to a safe level either by design calculation (a Stabilised Design) or by means of temperature controls. For worst case conditions, the temperature of steel pipes should be limited to the following levels:

For conditions other than worst case, or pipes of other materials (eg. Plastic, Stainless Steel, etc.)Tolerances: Voltage +10%; Resistance +10%; -0%Pipe temperatures higher than those given above may be accommodated by using voltage compensating devices - call for further details.

Applications:The FHT is a family of constant wattage parallel circuit heating cables designed for pipe and equipment trace heating in industrial applications. FHT can be used for frost protection and process temperature maintenance requiring high power output and/or high temperature exposure. FHT can provide process temperature maintenance up to 150°C and can withstand routine steam purges and temperature exposure to 260°C power off. FHT heating cables are zone

parallel heaters constructed from a heating element wrapped around two parallel conductors. The distance between conductor contact points forms the heating zone length. This parallel construction allows it to be cut to any length and terminated in the field. Its round shape provides excellent flexibility during installation as it allows for bending in every direction. FHT heating cables are approved for use in hazardous areas. Approvals are listed below.

• Totally waterproof• Double insulation• Moulded termination• Extremely flexible• Silicone insulation: -70°- +200°C

Applications:For use in cold stores, after a certain time of operation, there is built up ice on the cooler fins and in the drain line, and a defrosting cycle must take place.

Electrical resistances are inserted between the fins to melt the ice, and the water is collected and passed through drain pipes for disposal. Some meters of the drain pipes are inside the cold store, so consequently the water may freeze again.

To avoid this problem, a drain line heater is inserted into the pipe. It is switched on only during the defrosting cycle.

Energy-efficient control of ice and snow melting

An intelligent all-in-one solution for ice and snow melting suit-able for any application which uses hydronic or electric heating. Optimal operation is ensured through output control, making the system both effective and economical. ETO2 offers the possibi-lity of snow melting - the green way.

• Electronic on/off control of up to 11kW• Two-zone control, individually controlled• Economical control - minimized energy consumption• Adjustable moisture sensitivity• Display and selector knob for easy programming• Control of hydronic or electric ice and snow melting sys-

tems• Several language options

We cannot change the weater - but we can control the con-sequencesThe ETO2 controller has been developped for ice and snow melting on the ground and in gutters.Using readings from temperature and moisture sensors, the controller ensures economical control of power consumption while keeping outdoor areas and roofs free of ice and snow. The moisture sensor should be installed in the ground surface or placed in the gutter. As soon as moisture is detected in con-junction with low temperature, the ETO2 controller activates the snow-melting system.Once the sensor has dried out, the thermostat immediately goes into afterrun and the system continues to provide heat for a set time.

Thermostat functionsEnsuring minimal energy consumption:The snow melting system is only energized when the outdoor temperature drops below the selected setting and snow or ice is detected by the sensors. Energy is thus only used when absolutely needed.

For gutters - ETO2-4550, ETOR-55 and ETF-744/99The ETOR sensor is designed for installation in gutters, down-pipes, etc. ETOR sensors detect moisture, while ETF sensors measure temperature.

For outdoor surfaces - ETO2-4550, ETOG-55 and ETOG-56/ETOK-1The ETOG sensor is designed for embedding in the surface of the outdoor area. ETOG sensors measure ground temperature and moisture. The ETF-744/99 sensor can be used for measur-ing rapid temperature drops.

Remote control: It is possible to control the ETO2 via an external signal (day/week timer, GSM module or other signal source). The ETO2 can be switched on/off (standby) and the system can be temporarily forced to provide heat during the period of time set in the afterrun menu.

Sensors:ETOG Ground sensor:Designed for embedding into the surface of the outdoor area. Measures temperature and moisture.Up to two ETOG sensors can be installed.

ETOR Gutter sensor:Designed for installation in gutters, down pipes etc. Measures moisture only. Should be installed in combination with an ETF outdoor temperature sensor. Up to two ETOR sensors can be installed. ETF Outdoor temperature sensor:Measures temperature. Is normally used in com-bination with ETOR gutter sensor, but can also be used separately for temperature measurement only.An ETF sensor can also be used in combination with ETOG ground sensors for outdoor areas The ETF sensor can detect rapid drops in air temperature, thus avoiding icy areas.

Adjustment of the systemThe system is installed as pwer the connection diagram.HIGH should be set to +2°C and LOW to -2°C.

When icing occurs, note which of the LEDs is energized:• If Yellow LED is energized, turn HIGH up until Red LED is

energized.• If Green is energized, turn LOW down until Red LED is

energized.

After a few adjustments the correct setting will be achieved, and no icing will occur, irrespective of how cold the tempera-ture will be. The system will function automatically with the minimum consumption of energy.

Note: If icing occurs while the Red LED is energized, the heat-ing is either insufficient, or is interrupted. Mounting of Thermostat: DIN-rail mounting in a switch board.A cover box for separate wall mounting is available.

Mounting of outdoor sensor: The sensor is mounted under the roof eaves.

Ex Temperature LimiterEx Temperature Monitor

Type BTB/BSTW

Features:• 16A switching capacity• Pre-set limit point for BSTB• Suitable for use in zone 1 areas• Temperature setting directly in zone 1 areas• Resettable lockout on the device• Direct heating circuit connection via sheathed cable/cold lead• Temperature ranges from -20°C to +500°C Description:The 16A Ex temperature monitor BSTW / temperature limiter BTB are switch-over controllers housed in an EExe certified polyester enclosure. Heaters, fans, motors and other equipment are energised and de-energised by means of this thermostat when specific temperature ranges are exceeded. These devices can also be used to control the temperature in air, liquids or on various surfaces.

Function:Any change in temperature at the sensor bulb causes a change in the volume of fluid in the measuring system, which in turn results in a movement of the diaphragm membrane. This membrane is connected to a mechanical device that activates a microswitch. If the temperature at the sensor bulb exceeds the pre-set value, terminals 1 and 4 are opened. The BTB devices ‘lock-out’ permanently if the set temperature is exceeded. After a temperature decrease of about 9% below the set value, BTB can be re-set manually. If there is a rupture or break in the sensor tube (leakage), then the switch remains permanently open (fail-safe). If the temperature falls below the minimum setting, the autocontrol opens the circuit but closes again on temperature rise.

Applications:The BTB and BSTW thermostats can directly switch temperature-dependent equipment loads (heaters etc.) of up to 16A. Higher switching currents of 3-phase applications are switched by means of a contactor.

Heating circuit monitoring device ELHC/ is used to monitor self-regulating heating cables. Due to the capacitive load of the terminal equipment there is a phase displacement between the heating current and the supply voltage which is measured by the monitoring unit. The operating status is indicated by a potential-free change-over contact. In addition, the failure of the heating circuit voltage and supply voltage is detected. In case of a diconnection of the heating cable the phase displace-ment disappears releasing a fault message via the potential-free change-over contact. Simultaneously, the fault is indicated by a red LED (if the operating voltage is available).

ELHC/4 is used to monitor resistance heating lines. It monitors the resistance of a single and double phase heating circuit, respectively, with regard to disconnection in the switched-on/off mode. Moreover, a failure of the heating circuit and control voltages is detected. A potential-free change-over contact indicates the operating status.

Advantages:• Economic• Direct connection to heating cable

Applications:• Industrial applications• Mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP)

The heating circuit monitor ELHC/2 for monitoring self-regula-ting heating cables features a monitoring relay ELHC/2.1 and the terminal unit ELHC/2.2. Since the unit is linked to the supply voltage of the heating cable, the heating cable can only be monitored during operation. The heating being switched off, the contact is in the “fault” status.

The heating circuit monitor ELHC/4 is used to monitor resis-tance heating cables.

Ground Heating - Calc. 60-90W/m²For green houses, hot houses, lawns and other ground, where nature in the early spring or in the late autumn needs help through extra supply of heat. The heating cable is placed in a sand layer (thickness approx. 50mm) in 200-300mm depth and in loops with a cc-distance of 200-250 mm. It should be equipped with protection against digging, i.e. tile, cable protection, wire mesh or similar.Avoid placing the cable in peat soil and similar materials with low heat conductive capacity. Thermostat with sensor in the ground must be used (placed in pipes, which have been tightened at the end). The plant must be equipped with fault current relay and marked with weather proof tag plates.

Snow Melting - Calc. 200-350W/m²It is often neccessary to keep paths, steps, ramps, halls, car parks etc. free of snow and ice. The need for power and mounting varies according to the technical construction of the plant. The heating cable is placed in a sand layer, stone free asphalt or direcly in concrete approx. 50mm below level, which can be asphalt, concrete flags or similar. On steps the outer cable should be placed as near to the outer edge as possible to avoid icing on the edge. Calculate three cable strands per step.Adjustment equipment for snow melting is available in various types. You can control the plant by only one thermostat with field and air thermostat or with special snow sensors. Please contact us for suggestion for the correct equipment. The plant must be equipped with fault current relay and marked with weather proof tag plates.

Down Pipes and Gutters - Calc. 30-40W/m²Standard gutters and down pipes (120mm) are kept free of ice by putting the cable into the down pipe. For wider gutters the cable is placed in loops with 75mm cc-distance. The heating cable is mounted by using a distance holder to have it placed best. The heating cable is fastened in the down pipes by using a gutter hook. The icing problem occurs at +5°C to -8°C. It is therefore appropriate to control the plant with a min/max thermostat or a combined humidity/temperature control. Ask us for advice. The plant must be equipped with a fault current relay and marked with weather proof tag plates.

Frost Protection of Platforms - Calc. 20-25W/m²Damage to platforms caused by frost in the below ground at winter building activities, can easily be avoided by putting the heating cable directly in the stone free sand layer under the platform and insulate with broken stone in a 150-800mm depth. It is important that the heating cable is directly in touch with permanent installation or insulation. Therefore cover the heating cable with at least 100mm of sand. Minor plants can with the low total electricity consumption be running continously during the work. At bigger plants an automatic cabinet is recommended. Fault current relay demanded. At bigger areas several heating cables are combined.

Prior to the mounting non-tailor made heating cables must be tailor-made. For this the termination kit is used. For better heat transmission at plastic pipes or cast-iron pipes, alu-foil, alu-tape or similar are used before the tracing.

Start the laying at the feeding point of the heating cable. Please note requirement for extra length for connection at terminal box or thermostat. Fixing of the heating cable is made by a fixing material to match.

Mounting of heating cable on pipes.

Laying along the pipe.If the heating cable is laid along the pipe, it must follow the underside of the pipe and be fixed at each 300mm.

Spiral laying. If the heating cable is spirally wound around the pipe, this has to be made with regular distance over the entire pipe length to obtain even heat distribution.

Mounting of heating cable on flanges.

Before and after flanges the heating cable must be wound spirally closer.

Please note! rough edges must be deburred or covered by an aluminium plate.

Mounting of heating cable on T-junctions.

Normally each arm on a big T-junction is wound by a separate heating cable. At shorter T-junctions a single cable is normally laid along one of the sides of the T and returns along the other side to the main pipe line.

Mounting with valves.

Extra length heating cables for valves. To enable the service of the valve the heating cable must be wound across the valve.Place the heating cable so that the valve can be removed without damaging. This is made by placing the heating cable on the pipe on both sides of the valve, and then letting adequate extra cable hang for the valve. The extra length is fixed in a Z at the bottom of the valve.

Mounting on big valve flanges. If the valve has a relatively big flange, extra heating cable must be wound once around the edge of the flange.

Mounting on small valves. If the above mounting is not possible, extra heating cable is placed on each side of the pipe next to the valve or the flange.

For further information, please see the mounting manual, delivered with the cable.

SAN Quick-guide for heating cables

Applications:The SAN floor heating cable can be mounted in all rooms, bath-rooms, halls, kitchens etc.

The programme consists of the following types:

A. Heating cable netB. The stronger EL-MIX cable

A. The SAN Thermo-net is designed for renovation of heating in e.g. bathroom floors. The ultra thin heating cable is mounted on a net for fast and unproblematic mounting. Available in 2 versions.B. The SAN EL-MIX is a stronger heating cable e.g. casted into platforms, concrete floors, pavements, green houses, cold stores etc. The power is from 10-25W/m.

Always remember to thermostat adjust the heating cable. Each room must have its own thermostat. Use e.g. the electronic thermostat type SAN-REG 23 for buiding-in or for wall mounting.Closely follow the mounting manual, which follows the cable.

Power requirement:As a general rule the following power can be stated:

60W/m² Comfort heating in normally insulated rooms

90W/m² Full room heating in normally insulated rooms

120W/m² In badly insulated rooms, e.g. comfort heating in patios.

75-100W/m² Green houses

200-350W/m² Ramps/garages

Special Lengths “Tailor Made” EL-MIX MIt is not always possible to solve a problem with the regular standard lengths. Therefore SAN offers factory-tailoring of the EL-MIX cable in exactly the length and power required. See below scheme with Ohm-values:

The EL-MIX-M heating cable differs from the standard EL-MIX heating cable on the following points:Nominal voltage: 400 VMax. loading: 25 W/m*Max. operating temp.: **Is the cable to be operated close to the nominal temperature? Ask us! Lower loading allows a higher operating temperature.

In- and outdoor mounting of heating cables in water pipes - not for drinking water.

Frost protection of water pipesAvoid frost burst of water pipes and the herefrom arising water damage. NOTE! Can also be mounted inside the pipe system. EL-MIX is ideal for this job. Use e.g. the heating cable on the water pipes in the following situations:

Heating CableType EL-Mix-M up to 90°C

• When the water pipe is not in frost-free depth.• When the water pipe passes through un-heated rooms, lofts or roof slopes.• If the water pipe already is installed under e.g. a building.• Where the insulation is not optimum e.g. on pumps, water gauges, valves, etc.• Mink farms and other irrigation systems.

The digital OCC/OCD 2 thermostat has a built-in timer function and is a so called “intelligent” thermostat, - i.e. that it adjusts to the room temperature and calculates, when the heating should be connected, to optain the required temperature at the required time. The thermostat can e.g. be programmed to lower the temperature on week-days, when you are at work and at night, and in the weekend only at night, perhaps in another time interval. The programme can be interupted at any time, e.g. if you are going on a holiday and only wish to run with frost protection for a while. The programming is reestablished immediately when the manual setting is disconnected.
