The sturdy tool, equipped with hardened grapples, provides a strong and reliable method of latching and retrieving downhole tools. It is specifically designed to handle high- tensile pulling and jarring actions that may be necessary in retrieval and fish- ing operations. The CoilTOOLS releasable over- shot features a safety release to allow coming off the fish if it can't be pulled. The mechanism, activated by setting down weight or jarring downwards, does not require circulation. In case the required setdown weight cannot be achieved, the flow-release overshot type should be used. In addition to the standard version, the heavy-duty releasable overshot is also available in the long-reach version with extended catch range. Prior to running in the well, theoptimum shear pin configuration isselected. A dual-acting jar and acceler-ator should be run above the pullingtool if available pulling forces are insuf-ficient to free the fish, or if availablesetdown forces are insufficient tobreak the shear pins.

With the releasable overshot madeup on the CT tool string, the fishingBHA is run to depth just above the itemto be retrieved. To remove sand ordebris that may otherwise preventlatching to the fish, circulation shouldbe established through the overshot

prior to lowering the overshot over thefish. The overshot is set down gently onthe fish until a small reduction inweight, and often an increase in circu-lation pressure, is observed.

As the fish enters the overshot, thegrapples are pushed upwards andmoved off the tapered shoulder of theskirt. This allows the grapples toexpand and the fish to fully enter theovershot. A moderate upward strain istaken to verify latching. Having con-firmed proper engagement, the fishcan be retrieved from the well. In caseof a stuck fish, surface pulling weights

have to be increased to free the fish. For difficult to retrieve or severelystuck items, upward jarring may beused with the overshot engaged.

If it is necessary to release the over-shot from the fish, setdown weight ordownward jar impact is applied to thefish. This causes the safety release pinsto shear. When the pins shear, a lockring will automatically catch and holdthe grapples off the tapered skirt andallow the tool to be pulled off the fishfor retrieval. Shear values can beadjusted by varying the number of pins, the shear pin diameter and the pinmaterial.
