CoilTOOLS Catalog
Applications Retrieval of all tools with a cylin-
drical OD Vertical, deviated, and horizontal
wells Applications where hydraulic
release is not possible or wanted Sweet and sour service (H2S) Heavy-duty retrieval operations
Benefits and features Self-centralizing tool aligns well
with the fish. Safety release feature allows
release from fish by setdownweight or downward jarring.
Interchangeable grapple insertsallow one tool to fit large range offishes.
Standard version can be convertedinto long-reach overshot.
No circulation required for release. Release weight or force can be
field adjusted by varying the shearscrew setting.
Simple, reliable operation Rugged design for use in high-
impact and jarring operations
The CoilTOOLS heavy-duty, releasableovershot is designed to catch theexternal diameter of a fish that doesnot have a machined profile for easyretrieval. The sturdy tool, equippedwith hardened grapples, provides astrong and reliable method of latchingand retrieving downhole tools. It isspecifically designed to handle high-tensile pulling and jarring actions thatmay be necessary in retrieval and fish-ing operations. The bore through thereleasable overshot allows for circula-tion while passing over the fish. Thiswill wash away debris that may haveaccumulated on the fish in the well.
The CoilTOOLS releasable over-shot features a safety release to allowcoming off the fish if it can't be pulled. The mechanism, activated by settingdown weight or jarring downwards, does not require circulation. In casethe required setdown weight cannotbe achieved, the flow-release overshottype should be used. In addition to thestandard version, the heavy-dutyreleasable overshot is also available inthe long-reach version with extendedcatch range.

Retrieval and fishing tools
Prior to running in the well, theoptimum shear pin configuration isselected. A dual-acting jar and acceler-ator should be run above the pullingtool if available pulling forces are insuf-ficient to free the fish, or if availablesetdown forces are insufficient tobreak the shear pins.
With the releasable overshot madeup on the CT tool string, the fishingBHA is run to depth just above the itemto be retrieved. To remove sand ordebris that may otherwise preventlatching to the fish, circulation shouldbe established through the overshot
prior to lowering the overshot over thefish. The overshot is set down gently onthe fish until a small reduction inweight, and often an increase in circu-lation pressure, is observed.
As the fish enters the overshot, thegrapples are pushed upwards andmoved off the tapered shoulder of theskirt. This allows the grapples toexpand and the fish to fully enter theovershot. A moderate upward strain istaken to verify latching. Having con-firmed proper engagement, the fishcan be retrieved from the well. In caseof a stuck fish, surface pulling weights
have to be increased to free the fish. For difficult to retrieve or severelystuck items, upward jarring may beused with the overshot engaged.
If it is necessary to release the over-shot from the fish, setdown weight ordownward jar impact is applied to thefish. This causes the safety release pinsto shear. When the pins shear, a lockring will automatically catch and holdthe grapples off the tapered skirt andallow the tool to be pulled off the fishfor retrieval. Shear values can beadjusted by varying the number of pins, the shear pin diameter and the pinmaterial.
